Evening, Chloe - Some chicken noodle soup (big bowl of it),
and a cup of hot cocoa, please, too.
Thanks!
Good to see some familiar Diners dropping by. back, Attaboy! I like that "Amish Lite", especially about the Amish guy checking out the Harley...
Garry, that was neat about those railroad chapel cars - thanks for posting that!
Dave V., nice job on the M1 (so far). And how's the computer backup coming along? Do you have another computer you can use while the laptop is in the shop? Very good that you didn't lose your thesis work!
Jeff, I can understand what you;re saying on upgrading to your level of quality. Even before I was reading your post, I was wondering how much memory (for one thing) the low cost computers come with nowadays...
So Paul, are the Milwaukee Road buildings for your layout or the garden one? I'm confused... I'm thinking you said earlier that the Clark Garden was 7.5" scale, right? Do you have a good hiding place for Mary Ann's gift until Christmas, by the way?
Time to finish up my soup and cocoa. Hope everyone else doesn't have a code in da noz...
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening Gang: I went into town by myself and got Mary Ann's Christmas present or at least one of them. I payed for it out of my train money so she won't get a clue from the credit card. I also went by and talked to my doctor. The more I thought about it the less I liked the dr that I had seen about the stress test. He didn't really set down and talk to me about what he saw in the EKG. I'm going for another one with another doctor. We're still digging through the Part D business. A friend of ours who is a pharmisist ran our drug lists through the computer and came up with 3 good choices. It looks like Mary Ann's drugs will run around $5000 a year with premiums. It really costs to get old.
I went out to Clark Garden and visited with Mr. Clark. He's has some ideas for a 7.5 inch gauge railroad that we will look at after the holidays. I also ordred the Milwaukee Road Milwaukee depot kit with 2 extra train sheds from Walthers. It will take the 2 extra to get a decent looking train shed. Actually from prototype photos I estimate it will take 5 but I'll try with 2.
Garry I talked to Terry and he would like the drawings. If you will drop me a line with the cost and shipping I'll get you a check in the mail.
Dave the locomotive is looking good. I'm sorry to hear that your lap top broke. At least you didn't loose the data.
Well I think that I'll head for bed.
Good Night All

Hey, PC - thanks for posting the photo of your Christmas lawn decorations!
Jim in Cape Girardeau (and heading for home ASAP)
Hello Attaboy and Phillip. Let us know if Mennonites have Lionel trains under their Christmas trees.
Reminds me for some reason..... has anyone seen old photos of rolling churches that were converted from old passenger cars and once traveled in lightly populated areas?
Yeah, I think I'll take the opportunity to go see the Mennonites. Supposed to be a snowstorm this weekend and they're way out in the country, so I might wait and go the following weekend (weekend before Christmas.....Ooooo, that'd be cool!). We'll see!
Later all!
Good afternoon everyone, remember me? I know, it's been forever since I posted last but I saw PC's post about the Mennonites and just had to chip in.
I grew up right next door to a Mennonite church and attended Sunday school and church there for years. My mother still attends church there even though we are not Mennonites. If the Mennonite folks in Indiana are anything like the ones here, you won't meet a nicer group of people. They are among the precious few who truly live their faith. The ministers at the church I attended visited with our family regularly, even my aunts who lived nearby and didn't attend the church. Everyone was made welcome there no matter their beliefs. The church has a community picnic every summer and you see every type of person there from old order Amish to folks riding in on Harley motorcycles. It was kind of funny to see an elderly Amish gentleman checking out the motorcyle with the guy that rode in on it. Their services aren't much different form most other Christian faiths they just some slightly different beliefs in the way people should dress and behave. I suspect you will rather enjoy your visit.
in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you!
***Jim, sure hope you get that bug knocked out soon.
***Philip, "Amish Lite", that fella has a sense of humor.
***Dave, you don't know your own strength! Kidding aside, hope it keeps working until you can dig up enough money for repairs. Kinda surprised the innerds out-lived the outers.
***Jeff, CONGRATS on the 2-10-2.
Looks like a touch of rain here today. Rob
Nice steam loco, Jeff! Let me guess. 2-10-2. CN. Fergie's the friend. Heck-of-guy.
Der ..... good for you .... an Englishman turned into a Canadian. ... Terrific.
Lunch time.... Cheeseburger w/angus beef. Everything but mustard. No fries. (I don't like fies anymore).
Cheers!
Good Afternoon All,
Poked my head out the shop door and it's snowing like at the north pole. 2-3" down already and the guess was for 6-10" overall. It's a good day to stay late at w..k. CUL, J.R.

Trackside Diners: A cold one here, but not as horribly windy as forecast, so the wind chill isn't as bad as we had thought it might have been. Sunny and clear, which is good as we are off to town this p.m., as soon as we've rescued Kris' mom from the Thursday day clinic (It's her not-such-good-company-as-the-other week-is week) after lunch.
Dee Dee: Welcome! Glad to have you aboard. Virtually anything you desire is on the menu, and our kindly and efficient staff will be only too pleased to fill your order. (But then Lee has doubtless filled you in on all that )
Garry:
Der John..... yesterday you said you went to Canada in 1967. Where are you from?
Greg: back! Glad you made it in. Now gang, who's heard from Noah lately?
Mitch: So that's your pin oak? Our oaks keep their leaves pretty much all winter. Not that there are many on the island here, but there are a few small ones here and there. I don't know the exact variety. A G Scale track around your tree would be great, but raise it a bit so the neighbours can enjoy it too!
Johnboy: Looks like the cold you sent has finally got here!
Jonathan: Your loss of radiator reminds me I've got to get some card to block the radiators in the van and the car. It took a while to warm up the van this morning for my MIL.

CapeJim: Hope you get over that cold soon. There's a few real snorters going around up here too.
A very big to all for the advice on Norton etc. Kris' computer is now working so well that we are spared it's repair or replacement, by the look of it. I may yet change the anti-virus from our ISP's to the one that I now have working on my machine. I've also got some programs to help speed up the inner workings of my PC, and done some maintenance that should have been a regular item. Much happier campers on Sober Island!
Some small mrr progress in all this. I've begun to fill in the ground cover across the river, on the last remaining bit of blue desert before I tackle the whole of my upper level yards area. (The tracks are not even painted there yet. Only about 2 weeks of effective time left before New Year...will the 2007 resolution be kept?...await further bulletins, but don't make a book on this one!
Got to go. TTFN.

Ack...
Speaking of computer problems... The Gateway laptop I've been using to write my PhD dissertation broke. I mean it broke. The metal hinge on the left side of the screen broke when I opened it this morning here in the lab. The broken hinge then peeled up part of the keyboard cover.
It still works, of course (I'm on it now). But it's going to cost me $225 to get it fixed at Gateway. That's $225 I don't exactly have lying between the couch cushions this time of year. Dang.
Of course these things never happen during the warranty period.
This afternoon I'll need to do a full backup of this system. I have a 500 GB external drive I've been using for my research data; there's enough room to backup all of my papers and graphics too.
Not what I was hoping to deal with today.

Morning all!
Well, the freezing rain / sleet thing never happened, and I'm OK with that! Been praying for those poor folks out west though. Thats a tough one! We are looing like we're going to see some decent (for around here anyways) snowfall Saturday though. They're talking 4-6 inches at least. Right now it's not bad though. It's almost 40 degrees now, but it's been raining all night, so everything's good and wet.
Gotta get more schoolwork done today. I have my finals for one class and the first weeks homework for another. Fun, fun, fun!
Oh hey! I got invited to visit a Mennonite church this weekend. Think I might go just to see what it's like. I met the pastor there by chance and we got to talking theology and he gave me the invite. I asked him a bit about what to expect and he said basically it's kinda like "Amish Lite" jokingly. I mean, they drive cars and have electricity and all, but they live a very simple life. I think it might be a good experience to go and see that though.
Rob, sounds like the wifes test went good. I'm happy for you both!
Alright, well, I'm off! Later!
G'morning...
Cheers everybody!
Good Morning, Zoe, I'll have some TOAST with apple butter, couple of scrambled eggs, glass of OJ and milk, and a cup of coffee, please. Thanks, Bill T.!
Dave V., loved that Toast topic - sound very much like some talk at our MRR club. Is there a directory online of MT clubs? I'm partial to the Zephyr style of toaster, myself....
Reached my doctor's office (well, left a message - you know how likely it is to actually speak with even your doctor's nurse nowadays ('nuther rant there...)) and they called in a prescription to my pharmacy. Nasonex - go figure. I always associated it with allergy problems, but guess it's good for reducing inflamation in the sinuses, too. Started it last night. Had a fever (103) last night and was wiped, so I went to bed early. Slept pretty well, except for one short interruption (helping a co-worker with some forms for her on-call), but that was fairly early (10:30-ish). Slept pretty well through the night after that.
Lots o'Kleenexes on order today - I'll sit at the back table so as not to 'share' this with any other Diners.
Got word that my 'order is here' from our LHS/MRR club member by email yesterday. From the amount he told me, I'm thinking it's the Grandt Line doors and windows I ordered for the church I'm scratchbuilding. Haven't heard back yet from my email asking him.
I'd love to take off now for the rest of the week to rest and get rid of this thingee/cold/whatever. But I'm at w**k today. Have some things to do over the weekend, so I would like to be over this by then, at least. Say a few for the medication to kick it out.
Paul, when I get eligible for Medicare in a couple/few years, I'll need to do some checking on that part D.
Well, back to the grindstone - have paperw**k that I didn't get done from yesterday to do. Take care of yourselves and I hope the weatherguessers up there toward Indiana & Ohio continue to miss it on any ice predictions for you.
Blessings,
Good Morning from Tipton IN !
Bill Tidler Jr.
Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Thanks for the re-welcoming guys, it feels good to be back.
I need a bite to eat, all I've had this evening is cookies....Mind fixing me something up?
Well, I guess I'm heading back home for break tomorrow morning, my last final was at noon on monday of this week, and I've just kind of been hanging out waiting for tonight to come, hall government had an event every night this week, and of course I got in the group to plan tonight's (that's what happens when you follow the girls). We decorated cookies and watched Home Alone (it was the only thing we could come up with that was Christmas related but doesn't actually mention Christmas...Dang political correctness).
I got a new set of passenger cars at the OKC train show just before I came back up here last time, so I'm kind of looking forward to getting some track time on them...the Rocket has been needing something more appropriate to drag around.
Well guys, I hate to eat and run, but I'd better get to bed if I plan on getting home in good time tomorrow, so I guess I'd better make like a banana and split.
Greg
Evening folks!
Pepsi & one of Dave's steaks! (medium rare) Dave, pay no mind to my OSU shirt-I'm also a fan of PATERNO (one of the last legendary coaches to still be doing so)
Not too bad of a day (except for getting the gas bill) We got the overnite "foster" pup taken care of with our local animal control-who assured Dawn that since she was young & healthy, she would be kept until adopted at our local humane society (they don't euthanize).
Been working on my ATW ex SM boxcar today mostly-starting to "try" to make convincing rust on the roof. Also been browsing online for a suitable cut bar bracket. Haven't found what I wanted yet, & hope I don't have to fabricate them myself!
Lee, good to see your better half Dee Dee here-nothing like having a supportive lady in the hobby (I have one too! )
JR-if you're at Yosemite again & perchance notice a park service fire engine that looks a lot like the one from the old TV show Emergency, that's because it is! Still in service there, & once it's retired (possibly 2011) it will be put in a museum with the original Squad 51. From what I understand they keep it parked outside it's station bay as much as possible since it gets a lot of visitors & photographs from folks who know it's history. (just a bit of trivia)
Rob, keeping fingers crossed for your wife's test results. She's really been carrying a load lately! Let's hope for the best! Seems you're in the same boat with basement/layout as I am. Tentative plans laid out, & even space marked off on the floor w/masking tape-but still thinking some re-configuring, mainly towards the train workbench, & around the washer & dryer. ("shop" & staging tracks)
Garry-Love that dog! (I got that same pic in a forwarded email some time back-looks like the back of my king cab Dakota if I get another report of one of the handful of locomotives still lettered for Chessie System is headed through Sterling!)
Phil-cool names! I named my '73 Duster (1st car) Christine because she had a habit of overcoming problems on her own, until the frame went. (typical of them-but geez was she fast! V8-& after she got scrapped my bud took the motor & put in his Dodge Stepside & drag raced it in Youngstown where we went-& actually won a few races!) I'll be sure to add a few chapters for you also we also had some 4 wheeling adventures ourselves, but would rather the statute of limitations ran out before I published it!
"Finishes up"-AWESOME steak Dave! On my way home to pass out with a full stomach-stay warm & safe folks-nite!
Don't know how the weather guesser's are doing anywhere else, but like pcarrell said, they are missing it here on a daily basis. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one, the line between freezing rain and regular cold as ice rain is pretty hard to get right. We've been under watches since Mon, still no ice here. Tonight will be another chance for them to hit it, we are under and Advisory for ice again.
Lee- I had planned to be the last one to wish you a happy B Day last night, but we had a robbery and stabbing as I was visiting the forum, had to go rather quickly. So let me be the VERY LAST person to wish you a happy B Day! I bring up this page and do a little reading, then a little typing, then a little police radio work. Seems to do ok, but sometimes I need to sign off before I get stuff done. Ah well, whachagonnadoo?
eeyore- Glad to see you name your vehicles too. I had to explain more than once to a passenger that "No, no, the person I am introducing you to isn't named such and such, thats his Jeep!" My Scout II was Muskrat, that was also was my CB handle way back when. Ahhhhh, the good ol' days. And if you do write a book about your cars, save a chapter for me and I'll throw in some 4-Wheelin' tales! Nothin' any funnier than 16 4WD's on a trip and 15 of them breaking! And the 16th one loosing it's windshield on the way home! Again, good times.
Trainwreck- Seems I remember that moniker from a ways back, glad to see you back at your regular table!
Paul B- Sounds like you need to drag your doctor to your farm, then do your daily chores, and charge HIM for the stress test.
Our room addition is creeping along, with every nail driven- well, actually screw screwed, I get just that much closer to having the other room available for a layout! Can't hardly wait!
Guys, and gals- gearjammer and DeeDee come to mind right off, take good care and stay as warm as you can.
Rob,
Best of luck to the missus on the test. With your choices, the upstairs is probably going to be limited to a shelf or around the room - difficult with the windows already there. My layout is in the old coal bin area of the basement next to the new furnace and water heater. I put up ceiling tile and made a floor over the old uneven bin and then paneled in the area I was granted to keep out as much dust as possible. So far it's worked very well with the track staying clean with minimum cleaning. I acquired the rest of the basement through eminent domain (or was that manifest destiny?) and now have my model bench, storage, computer, and drum set in it. Oh yeah and the CFO's treadmill and the weight set. Crowded but cozy and the train room is safe as it is walled off. Patience and cooperation worked just fine in this case. J.R.
