A blistering 8 degrees! Thats what it was when I headed out this morning! Not only that, but fog as thick as pea soup!
Morning all!
A freezing fog advisory has been issued for 13 counties in central Indiana until 10am. Visibilities have been down to less than 1/4 mile in some areas. As if that isn't enough fun, how about we throw in some patchy black ice too! And for the icing on the cake? 1-3" of snow to be added tonight. Yeah buddy, we're havin' fun now!
Actually, if you use your head a little, it's not all that bad.
So hows things on your block?

Nice progress, der. Keep the photos coming.
I am heading down to Centralia for a haircut today. I might snap some flood photos with my phone. They breached a leavy to allow the flood waters to drain away from I=5. No access from Portland to Seattle on the freeway or by train.

***Jeffrey, hope your water is restored soon. It is easy to take it for granted until there isn't any.
***Sue, Howwwl....Centralia, one of my old stomping grounds. Is that camera shop still there in the little mall? A friend of mine (Kevin) bought it about 10 or so years ago. With digital cameras taking over the market place, I think he should have turned it into a hobby shop. Still have family and friends out that way. A teacher friend of mine lost all her belongings when her house flooded. Had her house raised an extra couple feet after that. Wonder if Centralia/Chehalis has flooded out again like it did when I lived in Rochester?
Wife's temp was back up to 103.8 this morning, but is again heading down. She had a very rough night, heaving and shaking. Started self-treating with penicilin. If it doesn't help, I'll drag her to the Doc. "Nurses...sheesh!"
I want to work on my table, but really need to hit the easel. Just not enough time to do everything I want. Have a good day all. Rob
Look at the interesting trucks under this flat. I don't think I have seen anything like this up our way. How about you David B. in Calgary???or CN Charlie in Wpg??

Afternoon all!
Tomorrow is my Friday off so I hope to get a few hours in the train room to make some progress.
Jim - Yes you have a keen eye for detail, the roundhouse is made of metal and it is actually an old Suydam kit that was built over 30 years ago. That is why I am renovating it now, trying to bring it up to date with some more recent modeling techniques. And thanks again!
Sue - Wish I had a couple hundred tankers that we could ship your way and they could be filled, but to no avail... Sounds like the wreath parties were a hoot!
Mitch - Nice bird pics!
Johnboy - Thanks for the comments on the roundhouse project!
J P - Sorry we forgot to leave the cookie crumb trail for you...it's just that we thought you could just follow your nose....to the fine aroma the kitchen creations coming out of the diner vents...
Rob - Hope your wife is getting some much deserved rest and is feeling better real soon. I concur on the ear thing, I had that equilibrium problem many years ago and it was a yeast infection in one of my ears, go figure that!
Der - Thanks for the lead on the surface mount LED's, I'll be checking that out real soon. Your long hatch is quite impressive, I like the way you built that access to the hidden track.

Right ! Hold All weather in it's present position!
We just sailed from St John's and are on our way home in a round- about- way via Sable Island. I would appreciate it if all of you would be so kind as to keep your weather until our arrival in Halifax sometime next week What is that laughter I here?
Rob: Hope the Mrs. is feeling better as things like that can be nasty this time of year especially with Christmas around the corner.
Der John: More excellent shots of your empire... I may have to make another bid for a takeover!
Phil: Sorry Old man despite the weather moretorium I think I may try to divert Ed's "Weather Shipment" this way!
Anyway not much else this way except gales 40 for tomorrow but hey what's 40 knots?
Lee: Just had the Pre retiremnet course and the extra time in is well worth it, especially if you enjoy what you're doing. I have 26 years punched with another 10 to go as our magic number are 35 in and a minumum of age 55
Johny Boy: Yes it was very nice to get ashore and stretch out the legs and just get off the ship. Saw your photo's and we see a lot of different things go through Halifax. Though I don't see it from where I am.
Ryan: Excellent photos of your Roundhouse. Definately looks a lot better then any preassembled or plastic kit. If I was to do a second Roundhouse for the Small engine roster that would be the way to go for sure..
Anyway I must Run

Hello,
Soup and sandwich, please.
Fergie... glad you're headed home after a rough trip.
Rob .. Sounds like a bad illness your wife has. Best wishes and prayers for a recovery soon.
Johnboy, I've seen miltary loads from Fort Campbell. Generally they are on TTX style flat cars and don't have 6 wheel trucks. The flats are lettered DOD but are in TTX yellow.
Our Model Railroad get-together has had a disaster and the meet has not begun. Gus was getting his layout ready and started running his IC passenger train. His layout has a swing gate instead of a duck under. A bridge on the gate carries the main line. The first two units of a three unit Proto 2000 ABA set hit the floor. The A units will be in his back shop pending receipt of repair parts. B-unit had minor damage and is already in service. He'll substitute an E7A for an E9A for tonights session. Next project for him is a protective electrical circuit.
My new freight yard is now in operation. No pictures. It's just boards and track.
Bye; I need to hustle my caboose.
Well i waited aroud for you guys to show up, I cooked three 8 pound turkeys with a lemon-garlic injection. My Chief made about 20 pounds of potatoes, mashed with milk, sour cream and real butter. We had various side dishes including some made from scratch pumkin pie, sweet potatoe pie. We wound up leaving about 30 pounds of food in the capable hands of the life saving station's over night crew. I'm stuffed!
Fergie they just came out with a 100% retirement at 40 years, but I can't see me climbing over the gunwales of a chinese, Polish, or German ship at age 60 to get that 100%, LOL. December 11th I'll be 41 and finding it harder every year to keep up with these 18 year olds that work for me. I think I'll do fine with 75% at 50. Then i can be a door greeter at Wal-mart or something, lol.
I laid out the turns for the layout on a 4'x4' section of plywood and they look pretty good. Now I'm pondering super elevated curves and if i should elevate the tracks an 1/8" from the rest of the layout or not.

Hey guys-this is a very rare daylight post on Amyjo's laptop. The puter at work is alot easier to use, but I hhad to send some information to marknewton in Sydney, so I figured I'd stop by here to see the daytime crowd.
eeyore and Fergie- Don't worry, guys, I'll increase the cut of boxcars to 40, that way there will be enough for all. And as for holding that weather in place, Ferg, I think you'll be ok, it was 3F here this morning as I left work, so I think the system is frozen in place!
cox47- I will try to get a copy of the final plan posted, we lost our scanner the other night at work when the high winds knocked out the power. I'll see what I can come up with, but remember, I might need to mail it to you-snail mail, that is-and have you post it! Typing and surfing are the totality of my computer skills!
Well, this has taken about 3 times as long to do as it would take at work, so I'll be heading out' Sure am glad this is a 24 hour place, we will see ya'll again tonight!

Evening Gang: Well when I got up this morning I felt pretty good. Right now after running around most of the day I'm pooped. I saw the doctor today. Actually it was my 3 month check up. I mentioned that I had had some unexplained pain in a couple of places so Monday I'm going for a stress test. He said wear tennis shoes or jogging shoes and excercising clothes. I gave him a blank stare and said what you see is what you get. Work boots and blue jeans and flannel shirt. I guess I'll have to shop around for some cheap shoes and maybe I'll use my flannel pajama bottoms.
Lee: I just got off the baotnerd site and read a report on the loss of shipping due to low lake levels. It seems that they are also having real problems on the west shore of Lake Michigan. The problem is agravated by sand bars building up. I see that you have a new boss up at group Sault. Is he over you?
Rob: I hope that Barbara is feeling better. That stuff sounds really bad.
No doctors tomorrow. Whooeeeee.
Well it's early but I'm going to head for bed.
Good Night All
Good evening all!
I just finished dinner so I thought I'd stop by for a coffee an how about some apple pie?
Johnboy, No I haven't seen anything like that here in Winterpeg. The army base here just moved to Shilo near Brandon and although it was right beside the CN mainline, it was all moved by truck. I had never seen anything with large guns on it there in any event. They kept all of that in Shilo as it would have frightened the locals including me.
Paul, You could get rid of that cold if only you had a cunning plan!
Fergie, Glad to hear it is only blowing 40 but after what you have described it must seem like just a breeze. I would have thought somewhere warm with a beach would have been more in order, not going down hill on 2 sticks in the freezing cold. Your work and your recreation both seem a little dangerous to me.
The windchill here is supposed to be -40 this weekend which by the way is the same Celcius or Farenheit. I think I'll just sell up, buy a motorhome and put an N guage layout in the back or even HO since there'll be plenty of room as I would then be divorced. Any parking room in your yard Jeff?
Well its time to attack the foam. I bought a battery powered foam cutter at Michaels and I can't believe how well it works. I'll soon have enough foam cut in all sorts of interesting shapes that I can use for a mountain that would make a skier proud, even Fergie. So what if I have a 4x8. At least no one will be able to criticize my trackplan. You can't criticize what you can't see.
Good night all.

I've been over at my parents place trying to figure out a computer problem they're having. Their system was running fine earlier today then all of a sudden they couldn't get on the internet anymore. It kept saying 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed' over and over again no matter what site they tried to go to. So I had a look at it and thought maybe the modem had dropped the IP address (it does on occasion) and renewing it should get the system back online. I brought up the system IP manager and clicked 'Release all' then clicked 'Renew all'. Nothing happened. It should have renewed the IP address but didn't. I called SuddenLink (Sometimes link here) and explained the problem. Well, they had me try a ping test. I sent a ping signal to Yahoo.com and it gave four replies. The tech then surmised that the problem wasn't the modem but had something to do with the computers operating system and told me to take the computer to a qualified tech. That was a bit of an insult because I'm the ONLY tech that works on that system. I got off the line with him and powered down the modem and disconnected the network cable from it and connected the cable from my mother's Dell notebook and powered the modem up again. I started the Dell and clicked the Internet Explorer icon and lo and behold it says 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed'. I tried resetting the modem several times and got the same exact result each time. I even repeated the ping test and got four replies back as before. Now I can an operating system problem on one system, but on two different systems that are NEVER connected to each other? Come on, that's a bit hard to swallow. All my tech experience is screaming MODEM PROBLEM! I called SuddenLink back and got hold of a different tech and explained the original problem to him and the trouble-shooting that had been done and he said the same thing the other guy had said. It's an operating system problem. I then dropped the bomb on him. I had tried this with two different computers and gotten the same exact result on both of them. That got his attention. For the next hour we tried test after test. We did the ping test again, Again we gfot back four replies. The modem is working. We then tried contacting Yahoo by IP address. Nothing. The modem isn't working. He then had me ping Suddenlink. Four replies came back. Then I tried hitting SuddenLink directly through their IP address. Nothing, zip, zilch, denada, zero. The modem isn't working. He then says the problem is with the computers network adapter. I told him that that is impossible because we had just done this with two computers with different network adapters. It's not possible for both systems to have the exact same problem and react in tghe exact same way with two distinctly different adapters. He conceeded that there MIGHT be something wrong with the modem and they'll send a tech out in the morning to look at it.My money is on the modem being the problem. What do you think?
Evening.
Nice and chilly here in the Northwest.
I'll have the chicken strips with the Onion Ring Tower, Chloe.
Sue: Highways closed between here and Portland? Will they be opened by this weekend? (Or next weekend at the latest?) I hope I don't miss 4449.
Oh Chloe, nice and fast service, thanks!Later!

***Johnboy, cool photo!
Thanks for all the well wishes guys. Just returned a bit ago from Doc In The Box. Turns out the wife has upper lobe pneumonia. We were there over 1 1/2 hours while she got fluids & antibiotics (IV) along with a shot in the backside. She was also extremely dehydrated. BTW< it is true...Nurses really do make terrible patients. Well, off to give her some tomato soup. Take care all. Rob
Mark, They have managed to get one lane north and one lane of the freeway open to semis only. They said some of it will be gravel and rough.
You can either take the backroads that front the freeway, or take Hwy 7 and go through Morton and HWY 12 to I-5. Either way it will be slow. At Exit 88, you can take the old highway 99 to Centralia. Then follow the road into town. Take Pearl Street to Chehalis. Stay in the right lane in Chehalis and it will send you south. That road becomes the Jackson Hwy which will intersect with Hwy 12. Go west to I-5. It will be slow going.
If you try it. I would mapquest it so you know what you are getting into. Go to www.WSDOT.WA.GOV if you want to get discouraged.
Amtrack is running again, so I am taking the train to Seattle this weekend with my office.
Ahh, this is more like it- back at the old keyboard with space between the keys so my monster fat fingers don't hit three keys at once. I much prefer desk tops to lap tops.
Jeffrey- Read and re-read your problem, and I can say "Huh? What?" with all honesty! The one time my puter messed up real bad I hit it so hard it broke the mirror behind it. Had to send it to my rocket scientist buddy in Seattle to get it fixed. He told me that was not a good way to fix computers, but it sure felt good when I punched it! A few days later I took my old computer out and shot it full of .223 holes. That feels even better!
Mudded more of the room addition today, probably will be shopping for paint and flooring this weekend. Amyjo told me I could paint it in any colors I wanted. I mentioned Coral, Turquoise, Azure Blue and Sea Green, and the look on her face was priceless. Then she said- whatever colors you want. So we'll see just how much we can make it look like The Seychelles! Or a Lake Michigan sunset.
Well, just wanted to check in, probably won't be back till Sun night, gotta remember what page this is.
Have a great weekend, all!
Evening all
Chloe could I have a piece of apple pie and glass of milk Please.
Rob And they say men are stubborn. Hope you can get your wife to rest a little. Sounds like all the stress she has been under caught up to her. Hope she is feeling better.
Fergie glad to hear your headed home Sunday river has some snow just waiting for you. You wouldn't be planning on stopping right there at the start of the access road for refreshment would you? Wife and I have eaten there a couple of times neat looking at the brewing process. ANd there beer sample is really tasty. Another thought for your ski retreat is Saddleback in Rangely they say that is getting better and better under new ownership and they have invested wisely. And the rates are very reasonable. Just a suggestion for next year.
Ryan alot of good work in the roundhouse.
Lee glad to hear your feed was a success.
Jeff those who really now th eproblem usually have a hard time convincing those who think they now every thing Now what I mean LOL
Sue Could you run those directions again I got loss at the second right LOL Glad to hear your parties were a success hope you get your outing on Amtrak
Der impressive layout hatch is really quite impressive.
After christmas I get to build my daughter a new bedroom and then I can begin on my new layout tore the old one down. I have the start of a few ideas but need to refine them.
Take care
Kevin
Evening, Chloe - bit of a chill out there tonight! A cup of hot cocoa and a grilled cheese sandwich sounds good to me, please.
Thanks! Oh, and look who's covering for this page! Chloe, keep me a running total and I'll settle up in the morning - paycheck will be in by then.
I can only guess how cold it feels up Johnboy's way there in Saskatchewan (or by CNCharlie's place)... Down here in our area, they've eased up a bit on the forecast, but still some black ice possibly tonight. The weather maps look like Inch and Jerry and our Indiana and Ohio crews may get hit with more of the worse weather out of this go-round.
Paul, hope your doctor gets you feeling better (after you get the treadmill out of the way, anyway). At least you get to get a pair of sneakers out of the deal. But do what the doctor recommends so you get better quickly, okay?
Flashwave, that's one lllllonnnnnng train! You might have to make your layout area bigger just to have enough mainline to run that circus by!
Johnboy, that looks almost like some trucks off of a heavyweight passenger car that they put under that flatcar. That's probably one heavy load on them, too!
Ryan, I never did build a Suydam metal kit my earlier time working on MRR'ing, but I do have a yard tower now, that's a later edition (California Models) of the old Suydam. I'm trying to figure out where I can justify putting it when I get more layout space. Not enough with my tiny-sized current layout, though.
Fergie, I wouldn't mind if the weather moves past us and sits over Indiana and Ohio for a bit... ( Did I say that out loud? ) Hope the wind holds off long enough for you to get back to port and go skiing.
Jeff, your description of the phone call with your techs sounds all too familiar to me... I think some phone techs are as bad as a total computer newbie on any problems that aren't in their scripts...
Wonder how Garry's club layout/show went tonight, after that start with the E-units. Definitely want to get that safety interlock installed, Garry. Our old club layout had one, but it was all built before I joined, so I'd have to ask some of the members to find out how they did it.
Speaking of our MRR club, Sunday afternoon we're having our club's Christmas dinner/party at the LHS owner/member's home, and they said to bring along a loco if we want to run one. I don't have a throttle (DCC) yet, but may take one of my locos along to test run.
Lee, sounds like you put on a good feed at your work today. Sorry I missed it!
Started setting up a MRR inventory database tonight (in AppleWorks), so I can get an inventory list printed out to take with me when I go to LHS'es and other stores and avoid getting duplicates. Used some information fields from a commercial inventory system I'd seen a while back, with some modifications for my needs.
Everyone watch yourselves out there if there's ice, snow or a mix in your area. PC, I can relate to your description of local drivers and how they (don't!) handle snow - I used to live in the Bootheel of Missouri, where the terrain is about as flat as can be. One winter there, they got snow (surprisingly), and the people didn't have a clue on how to drive on the white stuff! I thought it was funny, having grown up in the St. Louis area where there are more hills - and definitely more snow! When it'd snow up there, we'd go find an empty shopping center parking lot and practice driving our 'donuts' in the lot for fun.
Well, better be finishing up my cocoa and grilled cheese, and get headed out for tonight. Everyone take care of yourselves and stay healthy! Prayers for Barbara, Paul and any others ailing out there.
Blessings and a good night to all,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Hello Diners.
MRR group met and we operated just two layouts - mine and Gus's. Only four guys as some stayed home due to rain. My new yard helped to serve the steel mill. As I continue building the layout, this yard will be on a lower level and will not have scenery. No major derailments this evening, but it was sad to see Gus's wrecked E9. He already has parts on order.
Good to read all your posts.
Cheers!
Evening folks-just my usual coffee in my "Eeyore-Popular Pessimist" mug please, & yes Chloe-I need to eat something here soon-only problem is Dawn makes dinner at home when I get off work, so by the time I get here I'm pretty much stuffed.
Felt off-kilter all day today-not sick, just blah. One fella back in the stacks where I was working was coughing & snorting, & just to be safe, I took 1 of those "Airborne" preventive tablets. Who knows if they work or not, but I figured they couldn't hurt. I "almost" had to work tomorrow, since they needed someone to run to our branches, but fortunately got our maintenance guy to fill in, so I'm free until after Christmas. (yay) Got home to find my Athearn Corinth & Counce boxcar I got off ebay arrived. I know I'm weird, but plan on repainting, redecalling anyways (with HK decals) into a rusty AGR ex C&C paint out car I discovered on a siding here summer before last. I mainly wanted it because it was a PS 5344, which the proto is. Oh well, even if I started tomorrow, probably be this time next year before it's done-a lot of work needs to go into this one.
Johnboy-good catch-I haven't had the chance to catch a DODX flat yet, let alone one with a cool load like that. Best I caught (at Sterling Ohio where I railfan) was a GE 50 tonner (?) on a flat eastbound about this time last year.
Ryan-I have liked your roundhouse photos. Were those old Suydam metal kits difficult to assemble? I remember as a kid seeing those in the Walthers catalogs & the line "soldering skills required" which scared me away-I hadn't touched a soldering gun up to that point (I was about 12) & still probably not the best now.
Fergie-hope you make it home without any further weather problems. That was a cool link you sent earlier as to current ship positions. Since I'm a classic country music nut, where you're at puts me in mind of the Hank Snow song "Squid Jiggin' Ground."
Lee-I'm "almost" a year older than you (42 on Jan 1st YIKES) I've got 25 1/2 years in where I'm at, & it appears I could possibly retire in 7-8 years. I still have a lot of time yet, & things to look over before I have to make that decision. But the thought of not having to go to work, puttering around the house, working on TRAINS, keeps me going!
Charlie-I let you have space in our driveway-Dawn's looking for a place to run her sweet running N scale Atlas Soo Line RS-1 again but weather here isn't too much better than where you're at. Oh well, guess she'll have to wait until I hopefully get working someday on the coffee table layout (based on an awesome one in the March '78 issue of MR)
Jeff-I let Dawn glance at your comp problem post, since she's a comp guru, but she seemed to feel that it was one of those "you have to be there to figure out" things. (also she was tired & ready for bed I think) Don't feel bad-she's run into similar problems in the past herself. We're hoping you're right in your diagnosis BTW. Now after all is corrected, what you've went through you might find a bit of humor in this link-we have the book at work & read this story & find you can relate a bit. haven't figured out how to direct link here yet, so you'll have to copy & paste this:
http://www.mentallyincontinent.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=299
Rob-make sure you take care of your better half-& MAKE SURE SHE GETS HER FLUIDS! I know with my Mom's illnesses in the past year or so dehydration was one of the main problems.
Sue-glad things are quieting down out there a bit-Dawn's beadmaking buddy lives in Allyn, & she's told us through IMs & emails of the problems going on out there. (fortunately she's been OK so far) & hope you stay the same.
Okay-gettin' late-better hit the sack folks-I'm way too chatty tonite (must be that coffee) oh well-nite all!
