CHA-CHING!!!! OH YEAH, she's a keeper!
Good Evening, Chloe - just a cup of hot chocolate for me, in a go cup, please. Thanks!
Garry, I sure hope they don't start a dress code here. First, I'm not sure if I have a tie that I could wear, and second, I don't want to have to dress up to come in the Diner. But you're right - the menu has sure improved since Ryan started the menu planning. Nice thing is, if we come in between menus (or even not), the cook still can do a great job with any of our usual favorites, too!
Flashwave, I thought you might enjoy that 'freeze' video.
And speaking of freezing, CN Charlie, that's fairly warm for up your way, I'd say. What point in the spring do things usually start to thaw out enough for streams and rivers to run again?

DerJohn, after looking at that design I modified things to for my 'expanded' spare room layout, I decided I really need two passing tracks to do the swapping of full and empty cars at the mine. Didn't have to move the mine very much at all, though.
I will probably still keep fiddlin' away with it right up until I get that spare room and start building benchwork, though...
Time for me to head out. I have to get to bed earlier. At least, I reset the alarm to where it should be for in the morning.
Prayers going out for all those in need or ailing (or both).
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Tall cool glass of water, please & thanks!
***JP, sounds like a great gal you have there. Definitely a keeper!
***Paul, sounds like a great day to me. Moving dirt is fun. The other day (ahead of the rain) I dug two new burn & burry holes at the edge of the backyard. Not only functional, but makes for good stress relief, too. If you were my neighbor, I would have offered to help move those mounds of dirt.
***CN Charlie, I sure don't envy your temps. Yikes!
Going to fix up the old cabin with left-over building supplies from the new studio/house. Will be a bit of work, but nothing major is required. A little sheetrock and one pipe to the upstairs is pretty much it. Oh, and a bit of paint. Still cleaning up over there a little each night...it's a mess. Once done, we will look at renting it out.
Good night all. Rob

Morning all!
It's a brisk 9 degrees out there this morning. Throw in the wind chill and it's basically -11. Yeah, that'll get your attention! Walked out of the house this morning with damp hair and by the time I got to the car (10 or 20 steps) my hair was frozen. Got the coffee brewing here now though.
Well, my son is still selling those pizzas. He's sold a ton of then so far. He has to turn in his sales on Saturday, so he's knocking it out.
He's also decided to do the pinewood derby at our church. He got the kit last Saturday night and we're going to start carving tonight I think. I have to find out what the rules are as far as adding weight as he'd like to be as competetive as possible without breaking any rules. I figured we'd go with some graphite on the axles and such too. And if any of you have any speed secrets for these things, we're all ears!
Oh well, I'm outta here!
Later!

Jim, I meant to tell you the other day, that is a really nice looking plan you have going there. It's a good use of space and the track arrangements are well thought out.

and a cup of coffee, please?
Thanks, Jeff! Yep, the second box of those is the sugar-free ones.
Jeff. I like that little shed. Looks well-worn and used for a while. My kind of decrepit well-weathered structure.
PC, it's amazing what a graphics program will do to improve the appearance of a layout design, huh? I wish there were longer runs between towns, but with that space, that's about all I could do (and fit all the stuff I want to put into the design). I did decide that the interchange/staging area in the lower left ('southwest') was big enough that I would put a depot there to make it look more interesting. The turntable and roundhouse I wanted in there because I already have the Como roundhouse kit and a Walthers 90' turntable kit that I wanted to use. Of course, I may decide it looks too crowded once I start putting all the buildings and features in the actual layout, but y'know...
Ah, the paperw**k awaits... (lurking at my desk...)
Blessings on your day,
Morning folks!
Got to below freezing again last night, just when I thought that was all over....
I'll have a tall glass of Ed's OJ this morning!
Yesterday was full of excitement running errands with Ben:
Truck did not pass the annual inspection, so now I need to get that rear-view mirror put back up on the windshield. Just wish it would stop falling off, that adhesive only seems to work for about 4-5 months.
Then I took Ben to Best Buy so he could get the Flight Simulator 2004 for the XP PC, seems he wants to learn to fly before he learns to drive. Any who, I buy a bag of corn nuts for a quick snack and then I chipped a tooth. Ouch! So, now I already have a dentist appointment lined up anyway on the 29th, guess I ought to let them know what to expect when I show up.
Spent about 4 hours in the train room yesterday and worked on the roundhouse roof, installed some new windows that I printed out on transparency film. I created the windows using Excel spreadsheet program on the PC to make the frames. I also worked on some details and weathering a new water tower I bought last week.
Hey Garry and Jim, we might have raised the culinary standards a bit in the past few days, but this is still the same casual Diner I have come to know over the years. But, hey, if you want to wear a tie you will not be refused any service at all...

Jeff thanks for the night light shots again! You coulda fooled me that you can't detail anymore, that shed is great!
Jerry sounds like you had a good time at the show!
John Powell and speaking of tax refunds, we aren't getting one this year, so April 15th will be the filing day for us. Guess I need to have more $$$ taken out of my pay check. Yep, you got a keeper there; I just saw some video of Steamtown on PBS last night.
Lee that is quite a procedure for turning aluminum into chrome!
Rob you up late/early again? Sounds like you got half the equation taken care of with the pond water level rising, now Spring needs to happen sooner than later. We finally got about 4" rain over the past week, but still only have about 120 day supply of water for the area.
Jim the track plan really looks great and you solved that problem with the passing tracks!
PC we did the Pinewood Derby in Cub Scouts for 4 years in a row and the rules in Cubs may be different, but the cars in Cubs can weight up to 5 ounces and the axles must be the ones provided with the kit. Also, they cannot be lubricated with grease, only with the graphite you mentioned. Some speed secrets are to buff up the axles to a nice shine; I bet Lee's procedure for turning metal to chrome would be a great way to do it. I did a similar fashion by taking each axle and putting it into the chuck of my Dremel tool then as it turns and burnishing it with a wet 600 grit sandpaper to polish them up real good. Also, some people put the added weights in the front and the bottom of the car. Some people have been known to set one wheel a bit higher so that only 3 wheels are actually touching the track, and this is supposed to make for less friction while rolling down the track.

Any thoughts on making it one big urban area? I think the scenery might work better that way, but then what do I know. I'm one of those N scalers!

Can I still get a good ole burger and fries?
Howdy,
Last night we had some bitter cold winds and power kept going out, right now we are at a brisk 16F.
I cut the pavement expansion joints last night for my road and put a coat of dark grey down for the main street and a light powder grey on the sidewalks. I'm using project board for the road and evergreen sidewalk sheets for the sidewalks. I laid about 9' of cork roadbed on the downtown module for the 3 mains and a passing track for the passenger station and a short spur for the REA building. That accounts for 95% of the real estate on the 36" x 48" module.

PC -
I remember doing those during my days as a Scout. My dad, uncle and I would all gather in the basement at my parents house for a evening, and cut out the design and add the extra weight (a melted nickel I think is what we used) and pour it into 2 small holes we'd drilled into the bottom, between each set of wheels. Best to do the drilling before you start cutting so as to not ruin the sides too much. Let us know how it came out and how he did in the race(s)!
Enjoy!

I learned to fly the computer planes before I could drive. Although back in those days, things were less complex for the flight simulators. I mean, it was 1992 when I was the whole of ten. Of course, if I were to time travel to back then and tell 10 year old me something like "just be sure you're starting your descent at the CIP transition because you'll be cleared to cross GRACE at 5000 before you're vectored direct to the EWC VOR to begin your RNAV approach to runway 8" my head would explode. But tool around in an F-18 or something, hey I could do that well enough. Put me in a real one and I'd look like this guy:
I remember doing the Pinewood Derby three times. My first one was pretty lousy in every way. The second was also not so great but won third place in show. But the third one, well, it won races but I eventually got eliminated (my brother, though, one first place and got to go to some sort of regional derby). I, however, managed to get first place in show, despite an incredibly simple design. I had made the racer in the form of a bobsled. It was likely the most aerodynamic one in the derby, but apparently that's not really that important with such small vehicles and short runs.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful day down here in Paradise, even if the forecast was wrong about it raining. At least it stayed overcast, so the low 80's temperature wasn't too uncomfortable. The coffee (from the mountains of Veracruz, of course) is good, and strong, and hot this evening. Goes well with the orange-honey muffins that Fran made.
I managed to keep a bit of momentum going and continued with the track painting today. I'm now about finished with the ties, just a small stretch to dry-brush with a light grey. And I finally started on painting the rails. I'm happy with my choice of Delta Ceramcoat's "Brown Iron Oxide" as my rust color. Has just enough red in it to make it look (to my eyes and under my layout's lighting) like rust.
JP: Girlfriend .... said that this spring, we need to go to Scranton to Steamtown.
Paul - did you get the layout raised up using that "cheap" help? Or is that sometime in the future?
CG Jim: What point in the spring do things usually start to thaw out enough for streams and rivers to run again?
I wish there were longer runs between towns, but with that space, that's about all I could do.
Ryan: I need to get that rear-view mirror put back up on the windshield. Just wish it would stop falling off, that adhesive only seems to work for about 4-5 months.
Jerry - nice gaggle of grandkids. Looks like you were enjoying yourself.
That's about from down here.

Not quite 100%, but almost Ed. Actually, it was her idea for us to get tix for the game @ Fenway on April 24th as we have to be in Boston that weekend for a wedding on the 26th. We decided that we'd take her nephew as well for his birthday present, so I got 3 tix in the mail 2 weeks ago for the game.
Evening Gang: I spent the afternoon hauling dirt again. It looks like I can finish up the hauling and get to the spreading and leveling tomorrow. The battery on the dump trailer held out just about long enough for me to poop out.
ED: The layout raising party hopefully is in the near furture. It depends on how the boys get along with the paying jobs.
Jeff: I'll add my kudos for the track side shack. It looks so very typical of small buildings in rail yards.
The old Texas & Pacific depot in Weatherford is for sale. It's a fairly large deopot made of brick and has a bell tower. I'm not going to buy it but I am going to do a model for the Clark Gardens layout. I'm going to call the realestate broker and get permission to measure and photograph it. I can get the photographs from the street but I need some key measurments that I have to get by actually getting to the building. Of course I'll ask the price. Who knows maybe they'll take couple of pizzas and a six pack of beer. In my dreams. Unfortunately it is in need of major restoration.
Rob I think that having you nearby would be great. I'd like to get a look at your paint horses. My best cow pony was a paint. He's the one that the neighbors dogs ran into a fence and killed. I don't htink that I'll ever get another horse. A man only gets one speicial horse in his life time.
Ryan how about some steaks for us Texas ranchers. Shell fish make me sick.
Dooh: TOP. Well pizza, drinks, and munchies on me.
Well I guess I'll hit the sack.
Good Night All
JP - tickets to see the Red Sox in Fenway Aril 24th?!? I'm extremely jealous. I've never seen the Red Sox play in Fenway. I've never even been in Fenway in my entire life.

That may be true, Paul. Or woman. I lost my great buckskin gelding about 8 years ago. I don't think that I could every replace that personality. I had him from 3 months of age until he died at 21 years. It is sad just thinking about it.

Evening all.
I enjoyed my weekend. Now it's back to school.
I have recieved word that the big boys are due to be finished in 2-3 weeks, and then 4 weeks it should take to ship from china. 42-49 days and counting!
I saw the thread on the MTH GS4... Since PCM's is going nowhere fast, I think I have another locomotive to save for, along with athearn's new daylight passenger cars. '
Rob: I've been working at the ES44 head on collision, so far I can't get the mean AI train to drive faster than 20 MPH. Maybe the patch will allow me to get both engines up to speed by myself.
I'll be going now.

Heydy hi.
We have a brand new puter at work, it's black and fast, the other one brew up last Thur or Tue or some time ago. This one makes reading the last 8 pages a breeze.
Silverspike- Thanks for posting those shots, I wish I knew what the NS thingie was, maybe it will come back someday and I can ask around.
Ed- Thanks for the info, I might try to post some pics here soon, tonight I just wanted to catch up on my e-mail-can't read it at home- and check in here. I have a bunch of pics to post to p-bucket, might do that next.
JimRC- You mentioned something about stirring it up on the other forums, but it was so long between then and now it took me awhile to remember what I said about the IceRail System. I haven't checed back to see what response that might have gotten.
People sure aren't afraid to say things on the net they would never say face to face, and I know, as all of you folks do, that we have a very good group here, and more MRR knowledge than should be legal to gather in one spot. Sure is a shame when someone takes something the wrong way (I think this happens more than not) or when a disagreement gets out of hand. I put up with that in my j*b, only it usually involves booze and fists. Here, it's about playing with trains, and I'd never believe anyone could get so upset over something so benign and happy. Oh well, I know I can always come through the Diner Doors and as they close behind me they close out a whole lot of the world with them. I can mosey over to the Old Hands table and, after the obligatory pestering and bugging and joking, settle down with some good folk and chill.
Ajo and I spent Fri in Portland, picked up pics at W-mart, had dinner at a great little Mexi-raunt, El Camino Real- with friends and then had desert at the Koffee Kup Kafe, then I headed home and Ajo to w**k, after she got off Sat at 0700, we spruced up and headed to Brownsburg for a B-Day party, didn't get home until 2100, Ajo was pretty well wrecked. But we had a good time.
My BIL is building a clubhouse for his girls in the shape of a caboose, I will try to post some pics of it, it's really kinda neat. When he's done- he hopes before the girls graduate college (they are 11 and 8)- it will have heat, air, a breakfast area, and a loft in the cupola. We told him it was going to be nicer than the trailer we have!
Well, gonna try to post some shots on P-bucket, oh yeah, just like everywhere else, the weather just really sucks here. Just wanted to add that.
You all take care, and if this one doesn't break, we'll be back tomorrow night!
JEESH! Here I praised how fast this puter is, and when I tried to post my reply, it took forever, ended up posting it twice, then tried to delete one, we'll see how that goes. If you guys never see this post, let me know!
