Patrick's pictures of his Dragon River Steel Corp. inspired me to post these shots of the hot metal cars I scratch built for my neighbor's N scale steel mill. The prototype for these cars is used at the Granite City Steel Corp. across the river in Illinois. We made several road trips to get pictures of the mill and were able to catch a couple of hot metal cars being moved across hwy 203 from the BOF to the blast furnaces. We were able to calculate the dimensions of the cars by using the known wheel base of the trucks as our yard stick. The cars measure a scale 60' between the coupler pulling surfaces.
Here two cars leave the BOF empty.
Here another pair sit under the pouring floor of the blast furnace.
Wow, there are some pretty impressive pictures here this week! Nice job, guys!
My only project recently is putting a Rivarossi ball-bearing motor into my Big Boy.
Those BB motors run as well as Mashimas, and they've only got 3 poles!
I also did some ballasting a little while ago, which is visible in the picture. How do you guys think it looks?

Saturday is work day for the loggers at Central Camp in the Sierras in the 1920's. Here we see a good day's work ... a long line of loaded log cars. The Shay has just arrived to pick up the loads. A few of the loggers will hop a ride down to Oakhurst for a little entertainment tonight ...

OK, here's a picture of "the new baby."
The thing on the right side with the black O-ring is the filling hole. The knob in the center controls the drip rate of the cleaning fluid through a needle valve to the pad at the bottom. To show size, I put it between one of my subway cars on the right and a standard Athearn Blue-Box reefer on the left. (No, Athearn doesn't make a MacRoberts Fine Haggis reefer - that's from the "Fine" decal set by Fritz Milhaupt.)
I used 92% isopropyl alcohol in mine. That's toward the weak end of recommended solvents, but I didn't want to offend the ladies of the house by using anything stronger and more "aromatic." I was very happy with the results using alcohol, though, so I'll probably stick with that. Down in the subways, which is what I really need this for, I don't run anything with plastic wheels, and the primary disadvantage of alcohol is that it won't take off plastic residue.
Hah! "C&O Fan" is one of the troublemakers! That ampersand (&) in the user ID is why we get the non-matching quote block error when we try to quote those posts.

Nice pics people. Terry, great bridge. Ray, like the band shell and blue house. I tried the house and because it looks pretty good, I realize what a great model you have.
Done with the Kanyon for a while, but I found these two trains on the bridge and tresle.
Hey Mike
That DC 10 is cruising kinda low, you have a major airport in the area?
Seriously, nice pictures.
Oakhurst, great scene, we please post more, we need more gears and trees.

Thank You Art! BTW, is that couple on your bridge getting ready to leap?????? Whoa, that photo made me dizzy just looking at it. Fantastic!

We'll get there sooner or later!
I've been working on detailing out a SD40-2. Part of the project included installing Cannon & Co fans.
Before Cannonizing
The Cannon kit
Original fans removed
New fan sub base installed
New fans and grills installed[
This really makes the fans standout. It's a relatively simple project to do and as shown, can be done to a finished model without ruining the factory paint job.

I dunno. You could have just left those holes open for ventilation and saved yourself a couple of dollars LOL.
Just a couple of shots of my week ends effort where I have had to rebuild a section of baseboard after the rain came in. I must admit the rain was torrential. The chipboard has now been replaced with ply and the area I worked on this weekend was an elevated road that will lead up to an ashpit for the steam locos.

That grass matt really looks good. What kind of matt did you buy to make it look so real?
