The holes are done by hand with a tapered reamer.  Just take your time and in a few minutes you end of with the exact sized hole and perfectly round.

To those who have enquired regarding the grass on my layout picture, to get full details of how it was done there was an article done in the Australian Model Railway Magazine issue  No 259 for August 2006.

Back copies are available at http://www.australianmodelrailways.com/amframe.htm if you would like a copy of this excellent magazine and also learn a bit about the hobby down under.

I stated above that the cloth is not fake fur but merely a product called wonder cloth which is advertised as a polishing and cleaning cloth.

As this is probably not the appropriate thread to detail the procedure and as the forum page seemed to be unavailable for a few hours tonight I will put some details hopefully tomorrow on a thread called " How do you make cheap and easy tall grass" http://www.trains.com/trccs/forums/1240320/ShowPost.aspx

While the other thread wants to argue about whether graffiti should be modeled or not; is promoting gang activity, blah, blah, blah - it is prototypical, can be done in good taste, and fun and challenging to model.

Man i saw that car on railcarphotos and just started cracking up! It's awsome to see someone making that car GOOD JOB!! It looks just like the picture.

JK-all I have to say is: Bow [bow] That came out great!

(Yeah I remember the proto pic when it was 1st posted-I "thought" about doing it, but figured it'd take me at least a year to do that) Tongue [:P]

Guys,

thanks for your kind comments on the grass on my layout, I didn't think it would draw so many replies.

Due to the time difference it is now 6.20am Monday and I'm about to set sail for work.

Just briefly the product is available ( and should be there). It is called Edco Wonder cloth and is available in the laundry section of supermarkets.

I will give further details when I get home tonight, but further pictures are available on the web site below in the section Bad news/ goods news.

regards for now

SouthCoastRail-I've got to chime in! That looks GREAT! I've seen people use it for brown field grass, but that green looks so real!

If that's fake fur on the embankment, I need to give that a try. That looks good.

That grass matt really looks good. What kind of matt did you buy to make it look so real?

I also want to know what you used to color it with too.  Was that fake fur?  Please tell me your step by step.

Just a couple of shots of my week ends effort where I have had to rebuild a section of baseboard after the rain came in. I must admit the rain was torrential. The chipboard has now been replaced with ply and the area I worked on this weekend was an elevated road that will lead up to an ashpit for the steam locos.

I dunno. You could have just left those holes open for ventilation and saved yourself a couple of dollars LOL.

This really makes the fans standout.  It's a relatively simple project to do and as shown, can be done to a finished model without ruining the factory paint job.
