Weekend Photo Fun 10-19-2007 Thru 10-21-2007
Posted by MAbruce on Friday, October 19, 2007 2:10 PM

Welcome to another session of Weekend Photo Fun

We had a great session last week, so let's keep it rolling!

I would ask that we please consider continuing to follow these guidelines when participating:

1.  Remember to mention what scale is featured in your picture(s).

2.  Consider keeping the number of photos in your post to a minimum.  Remember that this is a weekly event, meaning there are 52 opportunities per year to post pictures, so don't feel the need to post them all at once.  Spread them out over time so we can enjoy them longer.

3.  Please, if you feel the urge to make a criticism, keep it constructive and civil.  In fact I'd suggest using the PM (Private Messaging) tool for this purpose so this topic doesn't stray.

**Oh, and one more thing...  GO RED SOX!  (Sorry, couldn't resistBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D])

Now on to the photos:

My photo is N-scale.  An Atlas plate grider bridge (dressed up a bit) over a stream on my layout.  The backdrop is digitally added (plain sky blue on my layout).

The main project for this week was to get my DC only Proto 2000's to run at a higher speed, instead of poking along. I have seven that needed this modification as my Kato RSC-2 was outrunning all of them. The pic below explains the modification quite well.

The modification is simple. It just takes time for me to do it because of the small parts involved. Now all of them can keep up with my DC only Athearns and they run circles around the Kato RSC-2.

Nice, nice work folks.  I do look forward to seeing and being challenged by the work each of you do!

I have been doing a lot of odds and ends this week.  Finally got around to finishing a set of drawers for storage of hobby stuff with a bookcase on top.  The mess at the top will be hidden by the facia when that goes up )sometime this winter....).

I also spent some time adding bushes, grass, and other scenery to the area near the yard leads at the Hopwell Junction Yard.

The upper part of this area is where Thompson Tiles is located.  I added a forest on the backdrop.  This must be second growth BTW as Thompson's has harvested all the hardwood near by for use as fuel for the ovens.

Oh, how could I forget!  The band is playing their first concert at the gazebo!  It is rumored that famed opera star Ramundo Howard is back home and may do a guest aria or two with the band later.  (Well that type of thing does happen around here.  Gym Class Heroes just came home to Geneva for a concert at the Smith Opera House!)

All but one photo is of HO scale.  The other is in 1/1 scale.  I'll let you decide which it is......

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

C&Ofan,I really like that little one lane hiway bridge right next to the railroad bridge. One doesn't see that too much any more. Really says 40's and 50's to me.

That's my version of the real auto bridge at Thurmond WVA that was still there as late as 1985

Up intill the late 30's there were no cars in Thurmond

The Auto bridge was added on the side of the Train bridge and reminded me of something

out of an Indiana Jone's movie

I watched a Guy try to drive a winniebago across it one day

His wife had to walk backwards accross the bridge while signalling him

It was a very tight squeeze

Jeff, it is my understanding that the Proto 2000's high voltage start-up and slow running is due to the continuous lighting effect in DC.  By by-passing that resistor did you eliminate the continuous lighting and maybe the headlight altogether?

Thanks co fan.  The baggage car started out as an IHC Rock Island scheme like the picture beneath it.  The 4-6-4 is a revell kit i got at hobby lobby.  Still working on the hudson though not sure if I liked my weathering attempt.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the lights. They're connected to another part of the board. All I did was move the motor wires over to the tabs that the wheel pickups connect to. The lights still get the power they need.

I'm with Andrew on this one since the Rockies beat my Padres, I'll cheer for them.  In that kind of situation most would cheer against them but I'm all for them.

Okay here is what I have done today.  I say today because I haven't done much at all.  These are pictures of one of the two I-90 overpasses at Muir that I have scratch built and a picture of the East Porthole of the Bozeman Tunnel.  I am trying to get the right color for concrete, and it sure isn't easy.  Right before the pictures were taken I was applying zip texture plaster base that I learned from Joe Fugate's 4th video for weathering.

Good pics as usual, Here are a few pics of some Cats I spotted on the tracks last night.

Some of these rail cars are quith heavy, although one Geep will pull it fine, I used two because I think it looks better. Just for the fun of it Last night I was wondering if the Bauchmann 2-6-2 would pull them. Sure enough, The little steamer pulled all that weight just fine, all I had to do was to turn the throttle up a bit.      Mike

Mike-Love the little detail of the jet liner in the first pic. I think that's the first time I've seen anyone do that.

 Hello all,

Below are pictures of DRSC first torpedo car full of molten hot metal for the BOF's steel converter. While the switcher moves the car into place, kress carriers a running scrap metal for the converters charging. Soon the scrap will be loaded into the converter and molten steel will be added. Then the converter will be loaded...next the oxygen lance will be lowered and turned on. In a fiery mix of sparks, flame and mayham, the first batch of steel is made in DRSC's plant.

Hope you injoy the pics, the BOF isn't done yet ,but still working on it. Ho is the only way to go.

Mike, it's good to see that you're back to your "old self" again.  You must have great wheelsets and nice flat trackwork to haul all those babies around with a single engine.

This isn't a brand new photo, but I've been spending the last couple of weeks on wiring and track cleaning.  I got my CMX machine, and it took care of the subway tunnels.  The "tubes" were getting to be a real problem, and there are parts I couldn't reach easily, even with all the lift-offs removed.  The CMX wouldn't go very far with a single engine, though, so I ended up having to MU two powered subway units together.  That was weird.

Anyway, even classic cars needed gas.  The pumps are decades newer than the truck, but someone has kept it in good shape over the years:

This is a new picture of this scene with some trees added.  This is the first showing of my new Atlas SD24 in consist with my brass turbine. I had to swapout the Lenz decoder that came in the SD24 for a Digitrax decoder so it could be speed matched to the turbine.

This is the railfan section of my 10'X14' N scale layout.

Thanks all for the good comments, OKr...I went thru a phase where I was buying a lot of Cats from Wally World. I am planning on a rock quarry and a Cat dealership on my next layout. I have about 75 pieces of Cat equpt. I am going to get some more depressed flat cars so I can put some track-hoes and a couple more loaders on the train.                    Mike
