Okay, so this is two weeks in a row that WPF has been hijacked. So for those of us just looking for fun model railroad photos, how about starting over.

So let's get back to the "fun" part!

Hey Jim... what's going on in the bush in the last pic. Just north of the camper the poor guy looks to be laying there dead. Looks like a murder. That how your little people deal with trolls on your layout? Off them and load up a camper with the carcasses and dump them in the wilderness???

ROFL-sorry, my sick sense of humor. *grin*

Geep Unit, occasionally I encounter a response that just sends me right over the edge and your 7:38 AM one has done just that!!! Unfortunately WPF, all too frequently, tends to become an arena for the pot calling the kettle black. Professional critics who become insulting in their critiques eventually get their nose punched, sometimes even literally punched.

Before I labeled the kettle black there, Geep Unit, I think I would appropriate a dictionary, look up the word focus- eff oh see you ess! - read - and understand - its definition, then come back and take a very close look at my photographs; it is an absolute affront to the English language to use - it might even be called oxymoronic - the word focus while perusing these photos. I do, however, wish to complement you because your photographs show an eye towards composition and that is worthy of note. Nothing wrong with the interest of your photographs; they just are out of focus and that tends towards distraction.

With an exception or two I have remained mum on critique; I have perhaps a thousand slides or photographs in a box labeled never-ever-show-these-photographs-to-anyone-without-either-a-sack-over-your-head-or-a-45-automatic-pointed-at-your-temple. I find them an acute embarrassment;  most have background - or foreground - distractions; some, however, are just p-poorly composed, or p-poorly exposed, or are out of focus. For whatever reason I do not show them to anyone.

Having gotten that off of my chest let me ask a question of the forum readership: my critique of Geep Unit is on his photography, not his painting skill which looks very, very professional; I have referred to the overpainting of a number on locomotives such as he has done as patching; I have, however, seen a different word used for this practice. Can someone enlighten me on this matter - what does the prototype call it? - I would like to add this word to my vocabulary card-file. I appreciate it!!!

Ain't that the truth! I've seen people take really lousy pictures (worse than any I have) with top notch professional equipment.

GUB, are you talking about the locomotives? If so, I must confess and plead ignorance about where they are built. I just saw this lashup of 3 locos at the head of a train in Shelby, MT, as we stopped for gas (and to feed our 3-month-old!). So I at least know that this one was in active service with BNSF.

The ES44DC is made by General Electric, but you have seen new locomotives at the plant near you, it was probably their EMD (GM) counterparts in identical paint schemes. Probably an SD70ACe or something similar.

SWChief,

Very nice work on your interior Big Smile [:D]  Which paint brands did you use and what are the names or codes of the colors?

Thanks.

I used Polly Scale paints for the interiors.  For the diner red seats I used Zinc Chromate Primer (414293).  The kitchen prep areas and other silver trim is Stainless Steel (414296).  The floor is Earth (414311).  The real floor was a mottled green carpet but I find earth is a good color to use on unseen floors, especially when lighting interiors.

The interiors came molded in the turquoise color, which is pretty close to the prototype Zuni Turquoise.  If I was going to repaint this color I use GN Glacier Green (414228).

To simulate the El Capitan's Adobe style plates, I used TH&B Cream (404055).

The model is numbered 666 because it's modeled after the actual KCS 666. Some engineers call it 'The demon engine' or 'The beast' and refuse to crew on it. It has one of the best safety records on the line and to my knowledge hasn't required anything more than routine maintenance.

I know I know, I am not supposed to be here but since I am here I will join in for the next day or so.  Anyway earlier tonight I renumbered a set of three SP units to the UP numbers and it was fun.  I ordered Microscales renumbering kits to do it.  I had to do three units

1. Athearn SP AC4400 #146 to UP #6154

2. Overland SD70M #9824 to UP#3999

3. Athearn Genesis SD70M #9803 to UP #3977

I actually have not finished them completely.  The Geneis SD70M I have just done one side with the numbers.  And the other two need the number boards done above the cab.  I did the Athearn AC4400 unit first to make sure it would come out nice before I jumped onto the Overland one ya know.  I numbered each unit to the correct number as well.  Last time I checked SP #3999 is still looking renumbered and not repainted yet.  I do not know about the other two.  Well here are the pictures of them.

Two SP AC4400 pictures

Before and after Overland SD70M pictures

The AC4400 in the backround (before)

After

The Athearn Genesis SD70M with patch and numbers only so far

I forgot to mention

I did not want to use anything on the oveland to remove the previous numbers so I decided not to remove any of the numbers on the other engines too.  I put the patch right over the exsisting numbers and it came out perfectly.  There was no need to remove them.  Now IF I decide to sell them to anyone else and they want to go back to the Sp numbers it will not be hard at all.  Well thats it  I am ready to do someone elses for them for free too.  No I am not a thief either

Just wondering Geep if you mowed down your train engineer with an AK-47? LOL. Is that the blood stain under the loco?

On a serious note though, I was wondering how you like the Athearn AC4400 models. I've been somewhat skeptical about athearn. I just bought a blue and yellow box loco last Christmas for $60 and have had some motor problems with it.

Is the overland model a smooth runner like Atlas or Kato?

I like the second shot better than the first because it focuses more on whats in the foreground than the background. The first pictures shows a blurry SD40-2 in front of a crisp A/C unit. The second photo is the opposite. I say, use whichever camera suites the situation.

I just wish this forum was a TROLL-FREE ZONE.

Bapou, those are some very cool looking tanksCool [8D]

I've seen quite a number of prototype tanks similar to your models.  If you don't want to heavily weather them, just consider applying washes of thin streaks of rust where the piping connects to the top of each tank.  Seal with dull coat.

Mikelhh, I've always liked your layout; it shows what a person can do in a small space with some careful attention to detail and obviously a fair amount of skill (which can be learned by most people).  Your photos have a, "feel," to them that's different but very appealing.  I know that partly it's the lighting but it's also that muted background; a lot different than the realistic photo backgrounds that are so popular.  Keep up the good work.

A+ on your layout :)   I've saved your photos as this is very similar to the type of track plan I have planned for the layout I'm currently gathering supplies for.

Thanks for sharing!

Speaking of Weekend (photo) Fun,  I have gotten the Bandstand basically finished.  There is still a lot of detailing to be done.  I did a test fit last night after I installed the sidewalks (Yes I know they are way too dark for for concrete - that's 'cause it ain't concrete.  Back 1925 around here we used something called Slate a lot. Big Smile [:D]).  Here isa a couple of photos I got of it:

We'll get there sooner or later!

This model is a refugee from the parts box. Bachmann body, Tyco chassis and Athearn trucks. One thing about it baffles me, it runs fine with plastic wheels but will derail every time with metal wheels.

You all seen one side of my switch tower, so here's the other side of it. If you look close, you might be able to see the light inside.
