That Mercury 'bathtub' streamlining was designed by the Case School of Engineering here in Cleveland. The NYC turned the job over to a bunch of kids with sharp pencils and slide rules. I never really warmed to the design but it WAS innovative. I do like the interim (pre Dreyfuss Hudson) design on the Commodore Vanderbilt:

I think Spring is over. Today we will hit 97°. It's also humid, so it will be a draining day to work outside.
I ran some trains yesterday. I need to do that more often -- working on scenery and buildings distracts me from the fun of running the trains.

There was this medical program that had a segment on an autopsy, on a unhealthy deceased patient that died as a result of high cholesterol. My memory doesn't recall the specific complications. The doctor took some white gunk out of a vien and asked, do you know what this is? (The interns looked puzzled), it's McDonald's he said.
Abbott Northwestern Hospital, probably second to the Mayo Clinic for medical Excellence, is recognized Nationwide. I've been a visitor there on many occasions. It fascinated me they actually had a McDonalds in the hospital on the first floor.
That's it! That was your only food choice, if you were a visitor and weren't going anywhere anytime too soon. Perhaps the hospital administrators were promoting job security...

The biggest problem, that I think someone mentioned, is the amount of sodium contained in processed food products. The same quarter pounder with cheese contains 1140mg, but get this - a Panera Mediterranean Veggie sandwich has slightly more than half the fat but 1310mg sodium. Panera chicken sandwiches have more fat and twice as much sodium as the McDonalds quarter pounder.
No one will call McDonalds healthy, but don't assume it's even remotely the worst prepared food you can eat.

I occasionally have a swallower issue on the top end as a result of my spine being full of Arthritis and creating neurological issues, my spine looks like a melted candle on X-Ray. My wife says if I was a dog they would put me down.
The wife and I were watching a new building go up over the weeks when we went into town and it was obviously going to be a fast-food joint. One day we drove by and it was a new McDonald's and the sign said grand opening, come in for a free Big Mac. The wife turned to me and asked "When was the last time you were ever in a McDonald's?" Years I said, can't remember. Me too she said.
Funny thing about the body, if you look after it, it will last a long time. Staying fit cost nothing. How much does a brisk walk five times a week cost? A blood panel will show the results of being fit, not to mention blood pressure/heart rate etc. Now throw in proper nutrition and WATCH OUT! Again proper nutrition cost nothing.
I am not perfect, I like the occasional good scotch or rum. If I have a drink two or three nights in a row my BP goes up 10-15 points. BP is not a problem for me as mine is around 105/60 on average so a few drinks pushes it up to 120/70 for a day or two. If BP was an issue for me I would not touch alcohol. How hard can it be?
People keep their cars and houses in tip-top shape and that can cost $$$ to do at times. It costs nothing to keep themselves in tip-top shape.

Except for beer, I stay away from carbs. I typically don't eat pasta very often, and a baked potato just shows up with a nice steak. It's been some years since I had fast food. The burgers have gotten very small and dry, and it feels like it's just a bun with not much inside.
We'll be getting another quarter steer this fall, so our meat supply should last a while. Our produce mostly comes from a good farm stand down the road. Other meats are from the butcher shop, and fish from local fish markets.
The animals get commercial food. We had one of those "healthy" cat foods, but they changed the formula drastically and, of course, denied it, but we could immediately tell it looked different, and neither cat would touch it. They're on cans from Petco now, after a lot of experimentation to find something that each of them likes.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Knock Knock!, ...HELLO!, ...It was about time LOTR finally dawned on me Bear As said before, sometimes simple common sense isn't always my best suit Haven't watched those for a long time.

I like McDonalds. I like their breakfast sandwiches and their coffee. I also like Big Macs, and the McDonalds french fries are better than most other fast food places.
One other nice thing about McDonalds -- on long car trips, you can pretty well know that the bathrooms in McDonalds are cleaner than many others along the highways.
I wouldn't eat there everyday (or even every month).

Yep, dog food manufacturers change the ingredients all the time and that can affect the health of an animal in short order. My wife checks the ingredients of the food before she puts in the monthly order and then checks the labels on the bags when they arrive. Twice now the ingredients on the website did not match the ingredients on the bags that arrived, they had changed. There were fireworks as that was reported to the Feds.

On the news tonight they reported how the enrollment in kids baseball is way down again this year. I played as a kid and as an adult played in some very competitive industrial leagues. I coached kid's baseball for years and it was so popular we always had a hard time finding enough coaches. I guess playing baseball for today's kids means a joystick on the couch.
I am still very much in touch with three of my childhood friends and we were unstoppable on the ice as kids. All four of us are still in excellent shape approaching 70. I tend to think playing organized sports as kids had something to do with staying in shape throughout our lives.
One of the neighbourhood kids had a serious heart issue he was born with and right from the get-go, the Doctors said he could drop dead at any time and we kids were warned it could happen one day when we were playing together. He was always part of the gang when it came to board games Hotwheels and other passive activities but not sports. We lost touch after high school and then one day I ran into an old friend and she introduced me to her husband. It was this childhood friend with heart issues. Considering they said he would not make adulthood it was a surprise to see him. He was still skinny as a rail as he knew putting on weight would do him in. He did drop dead at 54 but credited his diet for letting him live as long as he did.
I was in the workforce for 36 years and always packed food from home, sometimes more than one meal as I worked long days often. It seems packing a lunch for work is unheard of these days, it is always fast food. No wonder life spans are getting shorter.

Yikes, I'm going to the doctor this morning to find out what the plumbing problem is. I'm thinking they misdiagnosed diverticulitis, which could be a good thing, with exception of unneeded antibiotics.
Someone here said that sometimes you have to be your own doctor, as we're all best at knowing ourselves. Since two separate heavy antibiotic treatments, my lower abdominal problem seems to have gotten worse. That crap kills all the good bacteria you have in your gut.
The sharp pain on the left and sometimes centered, comes and goes without antibiotics for well over a year now. Internal infections don't just go away by themselves. I'm thinking it's irritable bowel syndrome. At least I'm hoping that's all it is

Mr B & Brent, we went through several different dog foods trying to find a solution to occasional gas problems with one of our dogs. There didn't seem to be a pattern to his issue so the food was the last explanation we had. We seem to have found one that solved it, but never thought about them changing ingredients. Will have to keep an eye on that.
We end up getting more fast food than I would like, mostly due to being on the road for my daughter's soccer schedule. Lunch, however, is always packed from home. One of my wife's coworkers stops at Burger King on her way in every morning and gets a Whopper and a large Coke. Every day. The woman apparently weighs about 100 pounds soaking wet, but I can't imagine the condition her body is in.
John, I agree, McDonalds breakfast sandwiches are wonderful. Those I don't get very often. Do make equivalents at home for dinner every so often. I love breakfast for dinner.
Mr B, I'm curious how much meat you get from a 1/4 steer. I've tried several times to talk my wife into going that route, but haven't had any luck getting through yet. We eat beef regularly and I would certainly prefer it to start leaning more toward the steak realm. Should be easier to do buying 1/4 cow than bit by bit at the store. That's when you pay more attention to the price.
Bear, incredible story about the bridge. Can you imagine running a train like that in today's day and age?
As for our dog with the leg issue, we ended up emailing our vet back (was how they sent the surgery estimate and date) telling them we were not comfortable waiting a month and a half and if they couldn't refer us to another vet to perform the surgery, then we would find one. They responded immediately explaining the date was a typo. They were very apologetic. He now goes in for surgery in two and a half weeks. Much better.
Has anyone else ordered anything from Arizona Rock & Mineral lately? I ordered ballast from them two weeks ago and still haven't seen it yet. Not even an email.

I wish I could say it's going to be a great day. I wish. It's hot, humid, and I have to cut the grass. These are the days it's nice to be inside in a cool house with all the window shades closed. One of my daughters lives about 100 miles away, and they had baseball-sized hail last night. I'm sure a new roof is in their future.
JaBearHer-in-Doors, who travelled Europe fairly extensively, before we met, made a similar comment to yours, in that the McDonalds restrooms could be relied upon for their cleanliness no matter where she was.
With my family of wife and three daughters, car trips were a real adventure. I could use any gas station bathroom. Not good enough for them. I got very used to stopping several times until they all found the 'right' restroom. McDonalds' restrooms were fairly consistent.
Time for breakfast -- then out to the lawn work. I want to be finished before 10:00 a.m.
I should have time for more layout work -- making progress on the new building. Another supply issue, though. I need more certain sized styrene strips that I thought I had plenty of. The nearest store where I could find some is 50 miles away, so I will probably order some and have to wait a while.

Mike, we have a refrigerator-sized vertical freezer in the garage. It will hold a lot more than a standard kitchen fridge because it's not full of doodads like vegetable crispers and icemakers. The quarter steer, all cut and shrink-wrapped into steaks, roasts and 1 pound sleeves of burger meat, pretty much fills that freezer.
The meat price is significantly lower than supermarket meat and if you get the right stuff it's better tasting than the butcher shop meat.

Speaking of fast food joints in Europe, in Zurich I went into a McDonald's and was absolutely stunned at the prices. It was four times the price than at home. In Venice, I went into a Wendy's and it was worse. A canal-side cafe was much more reasonable and the first thing they would do is put a bottle of wine on your table the way they bring you water here.

I understand, I could be at the airport for 30 hours straight at times. The money was ridiculous and work was the main reason I never got married until I was forty. Always had a gorgeous girlfriend though who shared the same mindset, work hard, play hard. I decided to hang it up and she carried on until retirement, never getting married.
Maybe Lion has given up on the forum because of the hiccups and doesn't even try anymore. I'll drop Assumption Abbey an Email if he doesn't stick his mane in the door soon.

Well, I got my Father's Day present last night. My wife has been pushing for a couple years for me to get a Blackstone and I finally did. She's more excited than I am. Who's present is this anyway? Got it put together last night. Will get it seasoned tonight. Then to figure out what I am going to make on it first. Don't worry, she has plenty of ideas.

I'm headed out the door in five minutes. A busy Friday morning.
At one time, we had a freezer in the basement and we were able to buy a lot of meat for our family. Now, with both of us old and alone, we don't eat much anymore. The freezer got sold since it sat mostly empty. In our small town, the grocery store is only a couple of minutes away, and I go there nearly everyday to get what we need.

We actually do side-by-side taste tests between meats. We have local supermarkets, the local butcher and now 2 quarter-steer places to choose from. The quarter-steer places come out the best, are the cheapest and the most nutritious.
