So, there's a War on and this Mike is sidelined? It is an H-5g and only six years old? Stack and turbo are covered, front of cab is boarded up. The air pump governor is missing ("borrowing" locomotive parts has been going on for a long time!) this isn't the sand tower but a coaling dock.
Collinwood had a huge concrete coaling structure. I'm looking into when that was built (1944 but I believe a little earlier) as locomotives wouldn't be stored on what appears to be a functioning, active coaling dock.
It IS possible that these engines are being laid-up or "mothballed" and there is still some coal in their tenders. Laborers would hand shovel it out and it would be used in other locos. So they would only be here for as long as it takes to perform that task.
This is about the time the USRA H-6 Mikados began showing up so maybe there was a brief surplus on hand. Many of the H-5s lasted through the mid-1930s.

Had two long days make for one short weekend. My youngest played in a tournament Saturday that burned up that whole day. Didn't get home until 10:30 that night. The girls played well. Won one, lost one. The team that beat them was a higher tier team and our girls were taking it to them, but then the other team scored and for some reason, our girls sort of lost their composure and quit playing good ball. It was good for them to get challenged. They needed it.
Yesterday was move in day for my oldest to her dorm. Rough day. Her anxiety is through the roof right now. Didn't help that it was hot, the dorms are not cooled, and she had soooo much stuff with her. Amazingly, we brought almost nothing back with us. Not sure how we accomplished that. Still, tensions were high in the heat with almost no room to manuever and emotions overpowering at times. Lots of texting last night trying to help her pull herself together. Going to be a tough few days (weeks?) for her. Classes start Wednesday, so that will help. Routines are good!

What dorm did she get, Mike? Move in day has always been a zoo. It was 53 years ago at Shaw Hall. I had a primo room: ground level, overlooking the Red Cedar River. One of my five good fortunes at MSU - none of which were very academic in nature!

Thanks guys. Hopefully she calms down soon. I was pushing her last night to spend the next couple days exploring, getting used to the area, that sort of thing. The less foreign it seems, the sooner she will start feeling better.

The Canadian National runs just south of the dorms. Heard several trains Sunday. She told me last night that they annoy her roommates, but she likes the sound of them. Said not only do they sound cool to her, she said they remind her of me and that makes her happy. She's a good kid.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have a Flickr acct which I use to place photos for posting. I do almost all of my posting through my iPad And Flickr does not offer the BB code option in that environment. So, I have to go back to my old PC totryto post pictures. Ok, in Flickr on the PC I'm in my acct in photo strea, I go to share, select BB code and select size. Mr. Otte had said to keep the pics at 1million pixels or less. Fine! Then I go into the diner, select either the pull down menu or the little icon that says insert picture, paste the copied BB code, set the size, and click done.

I dunno, what am I doing wrong?

Same here! I hate idiot phones!!! Only reason I have one is it is needed to easily drive my Tesla.... (Well I do text and like it for emergencies, etc.) But, mostly still use my iMac for most of the needed computer stuff.
Been spending a lot of time checking on hiking trails lately. Seems I am now "dating" a lady who loves to hike! She is a sweet little thing, very fit, and awfully cute! Retired School Secretary... I learned long ago as a teacher that you always are nice to the secretaries! Always!!! They are the ones who save your neck again and again if you are a teacher! Principals I used to yell at and argue with, but the secretaries, always be nice to!

not much to report on these days, been working and fixing radios.
For my throwback moment this month. I was given an RCA Selectavsion CED player by a customer. These came out in the early 80's and played movies off of a 12 inch record. I always wanted one when I was a kid, now I have one just for giggles. I fixed it with a $3 belt and it actually plays. No its not DVD or blue ray, but it was a neat technology at the time.
It may end up going on the bay eventually, but I have to watch the 15 movies that came with it.
The wierd thing is they could only fit 60 mins on a side, so you had to flip the disc mid movie.

I remember the Selectavision being demonstrated at my local Radio Shack. Later I joined the LaserDisc revolution and had built a collection of some 200 laserdiscs. I had a Pioneer player that would "flip" the disc automatically. My wife's sister is still using it to this day! I used to buy LaserDiscs from a little outfit in California named NetFlix!

Slightly better day yesterday for my oldest at college. She got access to a couple syllabuses and was digging into what her workload is going to look like. She also took my advice and went for a long walk around her dorm. My wife also gave her a goal to say "Hi" to two people she didn't know. That led to a short coversation with one of them that also has her feeling a little better. The goal for today, I think, was to do an activity. We have a few goals lined up for her for the next few weeks to give her something other than home to focus on and help her get past some of the homesickness and anxiety she is feeling. She's good about following through when we give her goals, so this should work out well.

Shortline month - For my final shortline of my area - The Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad. In my area they run on former PRR tracks, that CR sold of to the Allegheny Railroad.

The above photo was taken alongside the WNY&P tracks in downtown Corry Pa, after a snowplow had gotten a bit too far over and toppled the Crossing signal on their line.
This occurred right near the former Climax Locomotive Works building complex.
This ex-ALY line formerly was almost exclusively used to serve United Refining and Hammermill Paper for a while.
They were eventually bought out by the GWI, becoming part of the Buffalo & Pittsburgh line.

They run exclusively 4 axle EMD units on this portion, and I have not seen any ex-ALY painted units for a while now, as at least here, they have either been rebuilt into slugs (like 120 below) or moved off this line. (There was 1 left I am aware of in Butler shops still, the rest unfortunately have been repainted to my knowledge.)

They serve mainly Warren Pa's United Refining, a Team Track in Erie, and a few other smaller industries in my area, like the former Foamex location in Corry. They interchange with the WNY&P in both Salamanca NY (Via the Bradford line) and Corry Pa, along with both NS & CSX in Erie. They also have the largest area served out of the shortlines in my area, but I have concentrated mainly on local operations for them.
For a couple of months in 2019, they also served as "a prototype for everything" example, for those of us with less than stellar ballasting skils.

That segment stayed looking that way for almost the entire sumer of 2019 before the track gang finally finished it.
All of the above pictures were either from Warren yard, the line just east of Union City Pa, or of train WAER at various locations, the (almost) daily Warren-Erie turn. (They are normally Mon-Fri, but have run on occasion on weekends.)
Main commodity in my area is chemicals and refinery liquids in tank cars, including some chemicals used to make foam items at the former Foamex plant (now named differently) in Corry, and the team track hosts multiple commodities from gravel in open hoppers, to many different pelletized cargo types hauled in covered hoppers that get transferred to trucks at the Erie Team Track along the Erie PA Bayfront Parkway (290) north of I-90.
Occasionally, an industry will need some bigger items, like a transformer, and they can haul those too.

So, I do have quite the area to railfan in, between ALCO's on WNY&P and OC&T, to older EMD's on B&P, to modern power along NS & CSX along the lakeshore.

It's a beautiful day outside today.
David, I know I've told you before, but I'm impressed that England has done such a great job of preserving their railroad history. Your videos show just how great a job they've done taking care of old railroads.
Ray, I know what you mean about school secretaries. I'm looking at it from the side of being a principal. When talking about schools, I made sure that people knew it was the secretaries who ran the school, not me. They were also very good at diffusing anger when a parent or teacher needed to see me about some earth-shattering topic.
MLC, I don't think I've ever seen the disc system you're talking about. It's amazing to me how fast we went from broadcast TV, to cable TV, to VCRs, to your disc system, to streaming, etc. With the cable system, it was very easy to set a DVR to get a program. Now with streaming, it's not that easy to get a program that is streamed only once or a few times. I know there are systems that allow it to be done, so I may need to look into that.
Mike, your last week reminds me so much of my family years ago. It seems like just yesterday I took each daughter to her university and dropped them off. It was hard to drive away. They all adjusted easily, as I'm sure yours will.
When I went away to school, I was in my dorm room about 10 minutes when another kid down the hall came in and talked. He invited me and some others to his room for a drink. So began my college career.
I signed the contract with a roofing company yesterday. With the recent storms, virtually every house in my town is getting a new roof. Houses with vinyl siding are having it all replaced. Those houses look like they've been in a war. My house has wooden siding, and did not get the damage as bad. It can be repainted.
The broken windows are the hardest to get replaced, with a several-month wait on new windows. I didn't have any broken windows. The adjuster said I dodged the broken windows because of all the oak and maple trees we have around our house. The trees evidently slowed the hail enough that the sills were dented, siding hit, but no broken windows.
It will be one or two months before the roofers get to mine.
