John Boy... That was a short comment .
Ray ... I have a CD with John Denver singing several songs about trains. He sounds good to me. Of course, I don’t have your musical talents.

Heartland Division CB&QI also recll the Roger Miller version of King of the Road. ... Dean Martin was, of course, very talented, and I can imagine his version would have been good. Speaking of songs, I like "The City of New Orleans". I like how John Denver sang it.
'King of the Road' was one of the first songs that I liked as a kid. Haven't a clue why - it just stuck in my wee brain.
My favourite version of 'City of New Orleans' is the one done by Willy Nelson. I play it often!
I have to say that Gordon Lightfoot still holds first place in my choice of artists. When I was in University I always did my most important scholastic work in the wee hours of the morning. It was the only time I could be guaranteed peace and quiet - all the drunks had passed out and nobody was banging on my door for a free beer! I had a 'stackable' record player. The kind that you could put five or six records on and it would drop them down one at a time to be played. Gordon was my background music for most of the night. And I do mean 'background' music! I have never been a fan of loud music, that is with the exception of a couple of rock songs that Dianne and I love to jive to!
Memories, memories!!!
By the way, I still have all my old records and they are still in great shape. Dianne has repeatedly told me to take them to the dump, at which point I simply threaten her life - end of discussion!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
King of the Road is my favorite railroad related song. Although the Piano Man Billy Joel hasn't a song about railroads there are a few songs that have railroad influences such as Travelin' Prayer has a beat that sounds like the clickey clack of a train, Allentown has what sounds like a steam locomotive or a stationary steam engine as the base for the songs rythm, and the music video for River of Dreams was filmed in part on an abandoned railroad swing bridge.
By the way if no one noticed Billy Joel is my favorite singer of all time.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Good evening Diners,
Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.
NWP SWP I think you'll find us all a pretty good bunch of guys here in the diner. Nice to have a younger perspective.
Interesting that you're home schooled. My son was home schooled, but that never hindered him. He works for Apple. He's been in management like forever, and I think he runs the Genius Bar, but I'm a little vague on that. Oh, when we moved to the municipality where we live, there were some significant gang issues in the local high school, plus what they're teaching kids in public school now, we've never regretted the decision to home school.
If I remember correctly, "King of the Road" was Roger Miller's biggest hit. I think it was released in 1964.
Nothing to report MRR wise tonight.
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Goos Morning America!
No snow this morning, but I am glad there isn´t! I have to see my doc today for some more tests and I don´t care for a one-horse open sleigh ride today!
Schools are getting worse by the day in my country. The educational standards have been lowered to a degree which allows just any imbecil to pass. Universities are on the same track, producing graduates not able to spell properly, but who know all their rights. Unfortunately, home schooling is not an option at all.If you keep your kids at home, you will have the police knocking at your door, escorting your children to school. Some years ago, a family made it into the news, who didn´t want their kids to be indoctrinated, refusing to send them to school, and finally "fled" to the US, where they were granted refugee status.
Time to get going - CUL!
Tossing and turning since 2:30 am.
My son taught English in Korea. After school they go to private academies where they learn science, English or math. They may go to 2 or 3 academies the same day.
A kid down the street was home schooled, he spent a lot of time on his bicycle.
They have continually lowered the standards in the US, there have been cheating scandals, not by the students, but by the teachers to show that their students were better than they actually were. School administrators are payed a small fortune and then a year or two later they find out they were out of town for most of the year consulting and giving speeches.

Another Monday! Already!
Wher does the time go? OK, you don't have to try to answer that.
Thanks for the compliment on the photos, Alvie. After a pretty mild week of weather it looks like the coming week will be more "seasonal" in the HGreat Lakes area. I'm ready. Got the snow blower mounted on the tractor today. Firewood is stacked and dry, windows have the shrink-wrap plastic on them good to go!
Yesterday I finished a "hill-holder" project. No, I'm not talking about the one on your Studebaker. I put one in the track to hold a cut of cars like a hand brake was set. I like it, turned out pretty swell.

Altoona oops is right. Looks like someone is looking at the switch that the engine split (just the top of someone's hat). Almost looks like the switch was thrown before the last truck was over the points. I presume they were shoving into the yard.
Enjoy your day, everyone! I hope you are well and safe—

Good morning ... Coffee and a pecan roll, please.
Ed ... I'm impressed with your "hill-holder". That should help if a car is to be placed on an incine.
Railroad songs .... I just remembered Johny Cash singing "This Train is Bound for Glory". It's an old gospel song.
Schools.... A lot of people think the public schools in general have declined. It's sad to think we are under-educating kids. Our son and his wife in Ohio put our grand daughters in a private school through 8th grade. Now, they are teenagers in a public high school, and it is very noticable how much more advanced they are academically compared to other students.
Model railroad .... I am slowly working on installing my wood truss bridge on the layout. It is very slow because of all the other stuff I do besides model railroading. Anyhow, I am working on scenery beneath the bridge before the bridge is installed.
Speaking of interruptions .... Next week I begin jury duty.
Happy model railroading

With my background in law, I am glad I am exempted from jury duty!
Remember Lego trains? Look at this:
It´s a model of a German built narrow gauge 2-10-2T for the Bulgarian State Railway.
My doc called me in for another visit. Not a good sign, I am afraid.
Sir Madog Remember Lego trains? Look at this: It´s a model of a German built narrow gauge 2-10-2T for the Bulgarian State Railway.
Not promoting it, but just passing it on: For those interested in Lego Trains and on Facebook, there is a group there dedicated to Lego Trains.
Good morning!
Ed i like your "hill holder" and the little "armstrong" lever
ugh Jury duty I had it a few years back . only had to show up the first 2 days. and call each time it said to call. In KY JD is for 1 month. The first case was a drug case (poseesion) and I did not get called.
Good morning! I'm back from my vacation with the GF in Delaware. We both really like it there and are planning to move there at some point, once the divorces are final and our current homes are sold, so we know what we can afford. At least I'll have a place for my trains.
At 70, I'm finally exempt from jury duty, at least at the state level. I've been called in a few times, but never actually sat on a jury. It was just a big waste of time. I think they should pay jurors $750 an hour and pay lawyers $10 a day. That would fix the legal system and the courts pretty quickly.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Hobby Front: ¡Hoy es un día de carta roja! (For those who don't speak Spanish: Today is a red letter day!) Finally made the first cut on the handrails on the left hand side of the SD45 (looking at it from the rear of the engine). (Only took almost a year and a half.) Found that the long hood rails need to be shortened just a hair to get into the correct place. I removed a piece from the spare long hood rail to fill the hole. The one on the engine had residue of super glue on the bushing where it when into the cab. (I will use the rest of the section for one of the front nose angles as I will need three all told.) As I had planned to use the angle for the nose, I had painted the section NP yellow but it wasn't hard to repaint it black. As I type this, it is drying in my locking tweezers. Hopefully I will install it later this afternoon. (After I do the normal Monday afternoon chore a.k.a. laundry.) I also received a couple of railroad-related packages this morning: Some spark arrestors and some eyebolts for the SW1200 in one package. The other is research materials for the caboose, the already mentioned SD45, and a thought for another freight car (not that I really need another one, but I needed to make a minimun order.)
Evenin' Folks!
Chloe, I'll have a char grilled (medium Rare please) Rib Eye Steak, Baked Potato w/ sour cream, and a trip to the salad bar tonight. Oh and a decaf would fit the bill nicely as well.

School/education discussion..... I will stay out of it as politics is a banned subject here which is a good thing!!!!!! Let me just say that I was very happy to get to retire when I did.
"College is a refuge from hasty judgment." - Robert Frost
I spent most of the afternoon in Canadaigua, delivering the "Holiday" Wreath to my sister (she frankly loves the "Season" but hates all religions)......... I also, of course, had to stay and listen to her "suggestions" as to how I should change my looks and my life... Then I dropped off an envelope at the Bank for the MLK FLACE account conatining $1050 in checks for the scholarship fund, then stopped at a Cleaner there to get my old Black Suit cleaned and repaired. Last stop was to the Michael's Store just out of town in one of the strip malls on the way home to get a picture frame for my recent Church photo (I get one free to have my mug shot taken). I will be giving the photo to my son and family for Christmas.
Ed, nice job on the extra "braking" for the hill. An MMR friend of mine has a similar item on a hill where there is some switching to do to hold the rest of the train as well.
Have a good one out there....

Evening Diners,
We decided to get tickets to a college presentation of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella today. I will watch it on the 7th until 3 days from now.
I was researching more into New York Central black and white stripe sill in which I couldn't find but saw mostly in pictures. I noticed within 1967-69 that the white stripe was completely removed, the oval logo was placed where the number was.

I remember lego trains when they came out. I tried to get one but they're always sold out and expensive. That reminds me I never did pay a lego airplane that was $40 over 11 years ago.

Ed I got the box! Running the Rapido RDC right now! Other than the DH-123 is it stock or did you do the lighting and passangers? Looks great and tracks well, love the lighting! What I did not expect was a Great Nothern F7A shell! While I never had one, I all wise like them, hum same colors of the Bessiemer so maybe that is it.
I am beat, so later, Ken

Evening diners, I'll take a big Ole bowl of cookies and cream ice cream with milk on top... today we ordered tickets for the Billy Joel concert New Years Eve in Sunrise, Florida, tomorrow we order the tickets for the Notre Dame vs. LSU Citrus Bowl game New Years Day in Orlando, Florida we'll be in the area five days all in all any railfan spots such as yards in the area? And of course I'm going to buy a piece of rolling stock from a fallen flag from that region. Anybody have a hobby shop to recommend? And what would be some of the fallen flags from that area? Tomorrow afternoon is inventory and track cleaning night at the club. Hope there aren't any "rogue" cars that are unlocatable... An operating session is coming up it will be my first experience with that... Has anyone read any of John Signor's books on the SP? I have two Tehachapi and Donner both seem to be great reads so far... I'm wanting the one about the Shasta Division for Christmas so I really hope I do get it... Well look at this I finished the ice cream!
Hello, everyone
It's a bit windy here but the temperatures are still around 55°F. The Arctic Drool (I get a kick out of all the goofy names the TV talking heads come up with) is on its way with colder temperatures.

Nice and simple
Mr. B, it sounds like you'r life is going in a positive direction. Good to hear!
Angelo, There were lots of changes to NYC's paint jobs after Al Perlman took the helm. In fact they were already gearing up for the Penn-Central merger as early as 1963. Of course the driving factor in the paint jobs is money! Simpler + cheaper = stockholders happy. It does seem odd that they removed the white side-stripe, though. The FRA would come along a few years later and require "conspicuity" stripes, anyway.
Glad the package got there safely, Ken. Umm, news flash. The RDC is Proto 1000, the BOX is Rapido! I lost all my model RR boxes in a fire about five years ago and that one fit and it was handy.
I did the decoder, people and lights many years ago. Don't remember much about it. Those things have always been s-l-o-w. North West Short Line has a "speed-up" set of gears but I've never installed any.
Well, off to the lower berth for a few hours. The porter has instructions to wake me before Poughkeepsie!
I wish you good folks a pleasant day...
Regards, Ed
Good morning ...
Ulrich ... The Lego model is very remarkable.
Ed ... I am still very impressed with your Hill Holder. .... Also, maybe it was creditors more than stockholders who were happy with the cost cutting. I suppose the stripes did not matter because of all of the dirt and grime on the locomotives, too.

Ed, your hill-holder looks like the kind of project that would make a great how-to article for MR. We're always looking for short, two- or three-page features like that. Please consider submitting it to the magazine. Here's a link to tell you how: http://mrr.trains.com/magazine/about-us/contributor-guidelines/2010/03/submission-guidelines---model-railroader
--Steven Otte, Model Railroader senior associate editorsotte@kalmbach.com
Been gone a while; lots has been happening. Spent 10 days in NC with my daughter; it was her final conference VB tournament, and then we stayed up there for Thanksgiving. We rented a cabin in the woods and had a great, relaxing time. Turns out we would need it, because...
When we got home, I got sick. After a trip to the ER and a CT scan, found out I had 4 kidney stones, and one was moving. It turned out to be stuck, and infected, and my renal numbers were going bad in a hurry. So I had surgery on Friday to take care of the right side. Everything went well. Follow up next week with the urologist to remove a stint, but til then, I am on very light duty.
Steven: Hope you are rooting for LSU! My son played with Danny Etling at Purdue, and was a high school teammate (for one year) at A&M Consolidated HS with Christian Lacouture (Christian moved away).
Well see thats the confusing part... We live in Louisiana BUT we root for ND... Go Irish! Also I'm now a fan of the Texas Longhorns... that came out of my recent college search... but my brother likes LSU and ND so we'll have to sit him right at the LSU-ND border at the game!
Also I really am not a sports guy I can watch it especially if it's a big or good game, but my dad can't miss a game... and my brother is starting to get like that too.
Steven:
Glad you like the Longhorns, Hook Em Horns! Son was being recruited by Major Applewhite (his hero as a kid) until he was asked what sport he wanted to play in college. As he had been pulled from baseball practice and the head baseball coach was in the meeting, he said baseball. So UT quit recruiting him. He ended up at Purdue because it is cold in Indiana and he wanted to be an engineer.
In my college days, Steve Martin toured as a stand up comedian. His opening act was Steve Goodman, and one of the songs he played was "The City of New Orleans." One of the first songs I learned on the guitar, and still one of the only songs I play well enough to perform in a public setting.
PS. Purdue and ND are rivals. They played in 2014 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. Great game. Son started and played well. We made too many mistakes, and ended up losing 30-14. Never seen so many short guys dressed up as leprechauns in my life...
Home of LION:
And now here is one you can model.
House of LION is in the upper right hand corner, thks is the Halliburton sand depot in Richardton ND. Google "Richardton ND" click on maps and you will be able to count the ties. The tracks hace concrete ties, but the turnouts are on wooden ties. That is a lot of cars that layout can hold. The BNSF mane lion runs by just north of the depot.

Steven OtteEd, your hill-holder looks like the kind of project that would make a great how-to article for MR.
Thank you for your encouragement, Steven. I will take you up on the offer and put something together over the next few weeks.

Ed I forgot you had goats.
I am writing a screen play for an animated feature that has goats as the main characters.
The End Is Near - but only for today!
It´s been a rather dull day. The only "high light" was my battle with my ISP, which I won! I will habe a 100mbs line by January, with no extra charge on top of my existing contract, which runs at about $32 a month for telephone and Internet.
The reason why my doc called me in was a further change in medication. The old medication was too "strong" and therefore counterproductive. I am now in a trial and error period to fine tune my "system". Frankly, I am not keen about it - the last time the change ended in a helicopter ride to the ER.
G´Night, Everyone!
Good evening. I'll have a fudge brownie and a cup of decaf.
I spoke to an old friend last night who is heavily into Bitcoin. Well not just Bitcoin; these things are classified as cryptocurrencies. There are a bunch of them. He is using a market based in China to buy these less commonly known currencies.
Not to wax political, but there is big streak of conspiracy theory in the proponents of this asset class. I think it is a speculative bubble, but so was the housing market, for a number of years.
The interesting thing is they have fanciful names: Dash, Ripple, Monera, Neo and the all time best one ever Einsteinium, whose symbol is EMC2
I rented a chainsaw today, after mine died and I could not get it to start again, and cleared my woods of unwanted trees, dead and partially fallen trees. What are these things that are just trunks? 1/2 to 1 1 1/2 inch in diameter, no branches, no leaves just thorns?
Landscapers are coming tomorrow to tear out the sticker bushes and vines and carry the dead wood out. I am sore, but look forward to working on my DCC GP9 installation.
Hey all, Hope everyone is well. Today was a very meh day for myself. To update:
Dating: Let's just say- dating isn't for everyone
Work: Same Stuff Different Day.
Trains Part A: The Mid Mon Valley Model Railroad Club open house season is off to a great start this year. We have been open only two weekends and one light up night, and already have had 104 people- that's normally what we see halfway through the season. We have cub scouts visiting tomorrow night, but I have previous plans, so I will be unable to attend that one. 20 kids under 12, yeah there are a few club members and chaperones scheduled to attend.
Trains part B: Today had some success. Six hours resulted in this,
There are about 18 LEDS in there, and I still plan to put another bank of lights in it. All lit up like a Christmas tree huh?
I'm planning to do some Christmas shopping next week, so hopefully I don't get trampled at walmart- the club needs all the warm bodies we can get haha.
Healthwise- meh, Still good days and bad days. Mentally, I still have my happy days and my less than happy days, but the hobby is my escape from that.
