Good evening gents, it's been a while since I have been in the Diner. We had a nice touch of Summer two weeks ago when we broke all-time records for high temps, hit 90!!! Now we have the opposite, 24" of snow at Smuggler's Notch, Sunday River has 12", Burlington 6" etc, etc, up north of us, and May 1st is Saturday?????

Layout was going great guns until the warm weather hit, then all the outside work began, but I will get back to the layout soon.

Prayers for all you guys in need, Jeff, Ulrich, et al

Time for bed,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Evening,

Galaxy, I did read all your post and I truly feel sorry for you as  back pain is 'no fun' as my wife has told me. She too has Degenerative Disc Disease and has had it for 20 years. Luckily in her case it hasn't bothered her too much since she had a disc rupture a long time ago. Anyway I hope the docs are able to find some relief for you.

Chris, I don't think painting a blind would work very well as I think the paint would dry and start to flake off as the blind is rolled up and down. Could you make a removable panel to cover part of the window? I'm thinking of a thin panel you would slide into a slot on the window frame.

No work on the layout for over a week now as yard and other things just seem to take over.

Have to take the dogs out one last before bed so I'll say good-night.

Yup, THATs what I was thinking... I'm toying with the idea of the paint for RC cars, but THATs a little expensive for an experiment!

Welp, yes and no. You see, there will be a bunch of RR in front of the window. Trying to move/remove a panel...might be inviting disaster: more reaching/manipulation than pulling a blinds cord from underneath.

Thanks Charlie, I really do appreciate the input.Thumbs Up

I suppose I could always PAINT the window... Or maybe there is some kind of UV filtering film I can apply??? I was able to buy very light blue blinds about 7 years ago... now, it's all white or "off-white." *sigh* Maybe in another few years, light blue will be "in fashion" again...THAT would be the easiest solution! Since a cheap set can be picked up for around $5.00, it's also the cheapest... Naturally!Banged Head Loving Wife thinks the color I need can be special-ordered. I can only imagine what THAT would cost!Shock

I will likely blank-out the South window with a piece of plywood...it only really offers a view of the neighbor's house and part of our side yard. Nothing lost by losing THAT view! The East window affords a view of the UPRR (ex-CNW) mainline, especially between November and March (when the trees are bare).

*sigh* One more thing to cogitate upon...

 Good Morning,

after a night´s sleep, I start to feel a little better. Those migraine attacks keep coming now and then - as a result of a bad accident I had more than 20 years ago. A guy driving way too fast wanted to park his car inside mine, and when hit hit my car in the rear, he was doing 70 mph - ouch!

Zoe, I´ll have a mug of coffee and a breakfast bagel, thank you!

Galaxy - I am sorry to hear that there is no improvement of your back - healing Angel for you!

Jeff - I hope the trembling goes away - Angel for you, my friend!

It seems, as if we have to hoist the yellow flag above the diner - or at least the white one with a red cross in the middle.  I hope, our young ones here don´t get shied away, when the have to read about all the ailments and illnesses the old farts like me have to go through!

This has been the sunniest April ever recorded in the last 50 years. It is way to dry - the authorities have issued a forest fire warning. We need some of that wet stuff coming out of the clouds - the weather guessers predict that for the weekend.

Have a good day!

Ulrich: I had something like that happen a few years back when out driving North of here---seemed that some dude wanted to share the same space I was in and landed his Ford F150 into my little Audi Quattro at 80mph... luckily for me the car was just a little beefier in the rear than the front of his truck!!

Hello dere---

We be all sunny today and tomorrow but by the weekend back to rainin' kind of weekendWhistling---hey! On Monday it'll be ----sunny!! YES!!Big Smile

Any hooooo---I've got some opinionated opinions on Vinyl taking paint--I've BTDT---not sure I want to go through that againGrumpy---but I also did another dumb thing by covering the window up by using plywood----not too cool that eitherBanged Head---makes for a rather odd appearance outside the house either way. If I was to redo that I would go with the paint over vinyl routine that'll work--Blush

I'm going out today to get some groceries and to get some HD stuff done---not so much hd but stuff that needs done around here----heeheeheeSmile,Wink, & Grin

Chloe, I'll have the breakfast platter with a coffee please----I'll be at the window booth checking out the scenery here--Smile,Wink, & Grin

Good Morning All,

37F and sunny out this morning. Picked up a new car for the fleet last night, a Ford (yes another Ford) Aspire 4dr needing a clutch and some suspension w..k. It was cheap and happy because the former owner disassembled it and got stuck trying to figure out how to reassemble it.The car has low mileage and is rust free so his loss, our gain (with a bit of sweat equity on our part. Best part was horsing it into our tag trailer on 3 wheels.

Galaxy - yes I do read everything you write. It is dificult to hear of your troubles knowing there is nothing I can do to help, but you are in our prayers and we do pray the docs can find some way to aleviate your suffering. Both the CFO and I have minor back problems compared to yours, but we can both empathize. Hopefully it helps for you to use the diner as a place to come and keep us posted if for no other reason than to have a sympathetic audience.

Ulrich - Hope the migranes diminish soon. Again as above I can sympathize as i was in just the same sort of accident with the major difference being it was at night and I just saw the lights coming fast behind me so I could get off the brakes and on the gas cutting the impact speed from a bunch to about 40 mph. As it was the impact shot us down the road a fair bit and shortened the back of the car about 2 feet.

Chris - Krylon makes a plastic spray paint called Fusion which covers and sticks well, but you'd have to get creative as I don't see a really  light sky blue available. There are also a variety of reflective and UV reducing DIY window tints available that might w..k out better. Check out the ghlazing section of your friendly local  big box store. If you go that way and want installation advice, c'mon back to the diner.

well - gotta run - lots to do again. Hope the rest of you lot are doing well. I'll try to drop back in around lunch time.   Cheers, J.R.

Not much to report on the MRR front except for the museum where we continue to scenic the O gage display. I may breakk from that to start on the N again as we need to relay a bunch of the active track for the loop around the yard. Truth be known, I'm getting tired of planting little bushes and weeds

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morning. Bucket of coffee please.

BARRY and JR: thanks guys!  Thankfully I don't have to do anything right away...just "soon." I wish I'd kept the last set of el-cheapo blinds Rerun trashed-out...I'd have something to 'speramint on.

Today is planned-out as: writing an article about the latest"bring AMTRAK to Iowa City" meeting, writing captions for "Grandparents Day at Heritage Christian School," and wait on a phone call from a congressional candidate. Sunshine, high temp near 80 with a wind out of the South from 20-30 with gusts to 40. Any knucklehead who burns today...should be shot or thrown into the fire! We've got a chance of T-storms tonight, and all day tomorrow with a good shot at "severe." Springtime in Iowa...

I'd best be getting gone...here's hoping a good and SAFE day to all!

Good morning all. Pecan coffee cake please and a cup of coffee too thank you. Oh and throw some gravy on whatever Jeff has for awhile. He needs the weight. If he's lactose intolerant, make it that lactose free stuff that you can't tell the difference. That's the good thing about the diner, even healthy altered food tastes as good as the bad for you great tasting stuff this country was founded on!!! On second thought, scratch that. I don't know what his target weight should be.

Feels like there is a brick in my throat this morning. It's been forever since I had a sore throat, but I seem to remember it being more sore than just hurt when you swallow. Constantly feels like it needs to be cleared of some walrus sized obstruction that just won't go down. Oh well, ‘tis nothing compared to the ailments some of us have, so if that's all I have to complain about.......

Galaxy- I have back problems myself. Nothing major, just enough for Uncle Sam to say, "nope we're done here. Now go home" However, the discomfort and constant no relief from pain experiences I occasionally have in no way compare to what you , or Jeff, goes through. But, by having just a taste, I can imagine. And yes, I do read your posts. All of them. I read every ones posts in their entirety also.

There are exceptions when this does not happen. When it has been real busy in here and I get home late and tired, or if I'm pressed for time, I will read through the posts quickly to get caught up. If it is a long one, as I'm known for posting, I sometimes skim through it trying to catch the gist of what's going on with the intention of going back the next chance I get and reading it again. Admittedly, that doesn't always happen. I don't know why I just don't wait until I have the time to read them. It's not like the posts disappear after 12 hours or anything. I don't always comment on everything that someone posts. I slowed down on my commenting on every picture or event someone has. Sometimes I will, sometimes I won't. Since I like everyones work, mainly because you all are very good, I begin to feel like a recording. Looks good! Fantastic! Not that I don't think it is, it's just that, well, you know the "he says that to all of them" scene man. Kinda like I don't walk up to my friends every time I see them and say, I like you, you're my friend. They just know, and you guys, also in that category, should too. I hope.

Chris- If you go to Penny's or some other place that carries custom window stuff. I'm sure you can get them colored. It may not cost as much as you think. Then again..... Well, you may want to take into consideration the repair of faded parts of layout and factor that in too. Ooo, scratch that, just read J.R.s post. I forgot about the Fusion stuff. No offense meant to your housekeeping, but we have a house full of those blinds. I would recommend a new one if you choose to paint. I'm not sure you can get the things clean enough without loosing your mind.

Weather today, 79 and, well, like Chris said. Windy, gusts to 44. Of course it's windy, it's Thursday. Trash day. So the empty trash cans can be blown down the road into the neighbors yards, in the streets and/or in the bean field. Wait, Corn field this year. By 5 o'clock it will look like Mother Nature took this whole plastic destroying the world thing out on our trash cans leaving everything else in tact. Of course.......they're plastic.

Have a Great Day!!!

None taken Pally! We've got a house-full of 'em too...just none in the RR room, yet. When Loving Wife goes into a "cleaning frenzy" she attacks them/de-dustifies them... not sure what she does exactly, Rerun and I go into hiding...a duck-and-cover/shelter-in place exercise; lest we get caught up in her vortex! As for losing my mind...welp, I've got flyers tacked up all over town in case anybody has seen my mind out wandering lately...Whistling

Back to the blinds, we get the cheapest ones WallyWorld carries as Rerun tends to trash-out 2/year in the bedroom. He hears something outside and gets a little too...enthusiastic...in his attempt to snuff-out the offender. God help us if he ever gets the machine gun he keeps asking for... IF we hadn't been so quick to toss out the last set he trashed, I would've had a useless set to practice on: Fusion on part of it, regular Krylon (which has a color much, much, much closer to my needs), regular interior house paint, etc. Then, I'd be able to use it/abuse it...see what would w**k best. But...to some landfill in Illinoissssssssssss it went.

Yup, my trash goes to Illinoisssssssssssss. Cedar County doesn't have a landfill anymore, it goes to a "transfer station," where it gets trucked somewhere in the Land of Lincoln. I think there's a large dump near Morrison, might be where our stuff goes.

Back at it...gotta get the mental wheels turning...more coffee should lube 'em up pretty good.

My primary physician says that my target weight should be 200. As it is I'm not all that far above it. I used to weigh over 260.

Nothing special going on here today. I'm just taking the docs advice and staying off my feet as much as possible. The remaining wound on my left foot is healing well. After it's healed the doc will schedule a surgical procedure to relieve me of my problem with hammer toe. Hammer toe is a condition in which a deformity in one of the toe joints forces the toe to remain locked in a permanently bent position. One source of relief for this is to get special shoes. That's been tried and it failed. In my case a tendon on the bottom of the toe will have to be cut to return it to it's normal position. It's a simple operation and I'm not worried about it. The hard part will be the healing afterward. Diabetics tend to heal very slowly.

I  used to weigh in at just under 300lbs---now I be 242lbs. That after they took a bunch of fluid out of me and put me on this diet---- which is working out just fine by this puppySmile

I really need to get foam again---but with all this wind we been getting it'll be awhile before that happens. Little 'Spring' has been making hash out of the foam I left out for the Denfield mill site hence my complaining about the foam gettingWhistling

Oh---and a new batch of benchwork has to be built by moi to take into account the new Denfield site----and adjoining spurs and suchWhistling And here I just recuperating from a heart attack and already starting up on benchwork----yeah rightMischiefWhistling

 Good Evening,

well, that bl**dy migraine came back just after lunch - grrr. Took some pain killers and it is getting better now - for how long?

Talking of weight, mine is 235 lbs. at 6´5", but my Doc wants me to go down to 200 as well - how to? Do I have to leave out those nice greaseburgers Chloe serves so well?

Jeff - just a little Angel for you!

You see gentlemen, that's the beauty part of the diner. I myself am on a strict diet of rocks, grass and dirt - salt, fat, and purine free so the only place I can eat as I please is here. Virtual food fits any diet. so - enjoy!Thumbs Up  J.R.

*Door blows open with a raging wind* *Door slams shut with the patron saying/looking at the door*

"NOT A FIT DAY FOR MAN NOR BEAST"

  "CA CA COFFE COFFEE please~"
Brrr I'm cold.. very.. its so windy cold.. sunny .. oh yes sunny but dont' be fooled.. its cold out there~

Jim, .. quote: "Keith, you're looking good on the buildings there - I'd say that fenced-in patch to the left might make a nice beer garden."  Lol.. don't think that didn't cross my mind.  Then again a Hot Dog Stand with umbrella seemed fitting, but then again, I think I have some spots reserved for trees and bushes.  I do vision a ticket line.. and another with patrons waiting in line to get into the show.  Thanks for the Kudos' .. coming from some of you, that says alot.

But in truth.. I ask all of you.. lol.. When .. where do you stop?  I mean it.. I get the feeling like you / I never will.  Aside from the road signs.. mailboxes.. traffic lights.. lol,... the list goes on and on~  Not to mention, I'm saving the trees for last.  Its an 'landscaping technique in applying/planting trees and colors with an triangle involved.  Its one of those things when you see a landscaped setting.. you can't put you finger on it.. but if you know what to look for .. you'll see it.

Galaxy and Todd.. not Jeff.. you've got enough to deal with.  Lets try one simple test.  Now I hate it when I go visit my mom.. and mention anything about medicine.  A can of worms my family stays away from when visiting my mom.  All sorts of remedies.. and I in truth I hate it too.

But .. lets try one simple test. LOL  instead of taking aspirin or some pain killers.. lets try.. lol\

Glucosomine/condrotin.  sorry for the spelling but I'm sure its close.  If you have back pain.. take one small pill of the glucosmine/condrotin.. UNDER THE TONGUE.  I'd bet dollars to peso's .. one of you will feel relief.

Laugh all you want.. it works.. try it.

I'm gonna go sit in the corner booth and catch up on reading.. and maybe post a bit.

"More coffee please~"

Mornin'... er.... Afternoon everyone!

I was a good boy and got the lawn mowed and some other chores done before stopping in for coffee.  So Zoe how about a cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug, thanks.

While finishing up the lawn I managed to mow down a bit of catnip I have planted by the steps on the deck.  I got down to see if there were any bits big enough to take in to the boys (the plant should come back), and must have gotten some of the catnip oil on my left hand.  Man´t has been sitting here biting and licking my hand and going completely bonkers!  Both of them love the stuff!  well, they are cats.Whistling

I have about 4 days of stuff I need to get done before Saturday.  keep thinking of things I haven't done yet.  Sat up in bed this morning and had the thought, "I haven't done Thank You Certificates for the people doing clinics, or opening their homes for the tour, or the club hosting the meet.  I emailed one of the Board Members who like to do stuff like THAT and he will take care of it for me.  I will get some frames this afternoon from the $ store.

Chris, you might want to try painting the plastic blinds with the light blue Fusion paint and then hitting it with a coat of darker blue paint.  Just a thought.

The weight discussion is a familiar one for me.  I weighed in at 230lbs. when my wife died in 1987.  Whithin 2 years I ballooned up to 320lbs. Grief does bad things to you.  At THAT point I started having borderline diabetic readings.  managed to take off 60 lbs.  Then put 10 back on, and so on.  I have been plateaued at 280 for several years.  Since I have been put on Metformin I have gotten down to about 260.  I would be very happy just to get back down to where I was 23 years ago!  Little by little.....

OK, back to w*rk!

Later!

Winds right now are 12 to 20 mph with gusts to 30. Anybody out on the lake today has to be a certifiable nut! The white caps are hitting the shore at a foot high.

A little weathering project I was working on this morning.

Nice, Jeff - this one looks, as if it is awaiting the torch!

Been dabbling around with my plans for my Argyle Road layout - for now, I think I have found the max!

The tracks on the transfer table are now long enough to accomodate a short local freight with up to 7 "goods vans", a 3-coach train or a 2-car DMU.  I needed to sacrifice about a foot in length of the scenicked  section, but that´s OK with me.

Promise, I will not do any more dabbling around and get started on building the dang thing!

Keith - I you walk around with open eyes, you see all those nitty gritty details, which really do make the difference. There is hardly a risk of overdoing it, when you just do what you observe in reality.

I am calling it a day for today.

You all have a good one!

LOL.. you too Jeff? .. these winds are something.  Jeff.. sure hope you're feeling better bud.

There is so much static in the air.. you don't go near the cats and pet them.. sparks galore.  They freak out.

Ray.. I'm gonna go get me some catnip for my old cats.. they need something to spark them up a bit.  Its bad enough I have to give them tads/grains of measured aspirin.. maybe the catnip might get their joints moving. Great idea~  Never would have thought of it.

Hi guys!

Thanks to all those who "comiserated" with/for me. It is nice to know there are good thoughts and prayers going around...thatis why my other half and I offer up general prayer candles and special thoughts almost daily.

The Dr. increased the oxycontin dosage {primary med} and has increased allowable oxycodone {percocet} {secondary med} I can take, but little relief is felt...at least not yet. HAte to always complain, but when one is in pain one gets irritable, testy, nasty, and just plain miserable. And my other half becomes irritable, testy, and nasty at having to put up wiht me or to do my chores for me, especially after a long day at work, too.

Ulrich...I suffer from migraines often myself. I sympathize with you and know that they can alleviate then return twice as nasty. I have oxygen piped into my CPAP breathing machine at night, and the O2 has cut down on the number of headaches I actually wake up with-which when they happen automatically  means a 3-4 day duration of the headache. O2 therapy is also used to treat "cluster headaches" to help alleviate the symptoms. My headaches are usually also come at the changes in the weather and barometric pressure changes, so particularly in the spring and fall when the weather patterns change drastically and frequently, I suffer frequent headaches. The O2 does seem to help those as I wear and breathe the CPAP machine any time I lay down, even if it is only due to a headache.

Glucosomine/condrotin.  sorry for the spelling but I'm sure its close.  If you have back pain.. take one small pill of the glucosmine/condrotin.. UNDER THE TONGUE.  I'd bet dollars to peso's .. one of you will feel relief.

On HUGE problem with that idea... glucosamine/condroitin carries a stern warning label that say "If you are allergic to shellfish DO NOT TAKE". NAturally I only mention that because...well...guess what...I'm allergic to shellfish. So it is out of the question even if it DID work "miracles". ANd my other half used to take it for joint pain, but found it did diddly squat. SOme will swear it works well, I am sure,, but if surgery is required to fix something, a mere OTC is likely not to do much to help. ANd that would be why I am going to see a nuerosurgeon. WIsh it were that simple to *poof* make the pain go away. I do thank you for your thoughts, though.

Jeff you sound more chipper today...but, like me, one needs plenty of rest to be chipper.

Good day to all.

There is so much static in the air.. you don't go near the cats and pet them.. sparks galore.  They freak out.

Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!Mischief Here kitty kitty kitty....

RAY: Thanks! Actually, I'm cogitating upon the theory of spraying the lightest blue they have in conjunction with their white...maybe, if the stars align and I do it juusssssssssssssssssssssst right; I can get a light blue somewhat close to the lighter sky color I'm using.

Holy crap! I'm actually caught-up on content for THAT. I'm still waiting on the congressman wannabee to ring me up to 'splain his withdrawal from a forum. I'm wondering more and more why he didn't take the young'uns to task when they made their comments...rather than boycott an event several days later. Seems a bit odd overall.  The more I look at the situation, the more things don't add up...not good for a guy who wants to represent me in The Swamp (Wash., D.C.). Durn Poly-Tickians!

Where'd the cat go? Here kitty kitty kitty.....

Strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

Have managed to do a little work on the wife's HO layout this week. Should have the pond painted tonight and then start the water layering process soon. We picked up a few items at the train store after having Labs drawn at the Docs. She bought a particular tree she wanted and a couple Woodland Scenics. I got glue and a bottle of water maker stuff (forget the name).

Sandy, our oldest horse fell on her haunches a couple days ago and barely made it back up on her third attempt. Knowing her time is drawing to a close, I picked up a 357 MAG today. I dread that day more than I can express. Breaks my heart!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Went to the doc today to get this hand tremor checked out. He says it's from either my neuropathy or from anxiety. Either way that's a relief. He put me on Zanax to check the anxiety angle. I have to go back in the morning to have blood work done.

Its bad enough I have to give them tads/grains of measured aspirin..

Ah.... Kieth?  I sure hope it is being done under the direct care of a Vet!  You do know that Aspirin is very toxic to cats!?  As little as 11mg/lb can cause problems for them.  http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1418&aid=2234

But of course.  If I didn't they'd walk around with draging one leg.  Blood tests the works.  The last one had to have his eye removed.  The list goes on.  I've had cats all my life, I have 6 now, as well as 3 dogs.  Everyone goes to the Vet... especially the dogs.  Lol.. but with my kids.. as well as myself.. as achild we waited 24 hrs to go see the Doc...lol.

But I do thank you for your concern.  These cats are old.. at least.. 17 years now.

Good!  I figured they were, but, you know, best sometimes to check.  I inherited my Mom's old cat.  She was 18 I believe when I got her, she died at the age of 21.  She was in obvious pain and i had her put down by the Vet.  Still miss the old girl.......

 Good evening.  Finally off work!!

News on the car.  The floor boards in the car are bent, and more damage to come.  We will know tomorrow if its totaled or not.   The wife won't be getting any pain money, or anything.  Something about we had basic "tort" insurance.   So in other words........We get nothing.  She has to suffer, and shes the one with the concussion.  I think its a joke.

Now I'm worried about the car.  If its totaled who pays??

 Its been one BIG  headache!!!

I think that when it is finished is when you can see all the details for what they are and can say to yourself----"Self, well done!!----". My Exceda yard for example is consisting of a wye that allows turn arounds while at the same time serves as the service yard for the RDC's that we have. I'm still trying however to get the yard to look more like a yard instead of a series of ladder tracks pretending to be a yard

Now, if one looks at Williston the downtown is all finished. Even down to the single lonely petunia stop light flashing yellow all the time. That light sits suspended over the intersection on its own ----

Yep. Limited tort doesn't cover that. Many people buy it believing they'll be saving money, an average of 15% off the premium payment. In the end it's better to pay the extra money. I still carry full coverage on mine including full med coverage.
