Good evening, it's late and I'm tired.
First and foremost I want to say to Ray, your sons MIL is in my prayers and I hope for the same thing as you.
Jeff- I must say IMO the unflashed picture does look better to me. I also know what a flash does too. Brings out all sorts of things differently than what the eye sees in person. I gave up on trying to get my camera to take a picture like it looks in person. So, when I post a picture, what you see ain't always what it looks like, but it's what you get. Like you, I quit worrying about it.
I generally never make a comment about something unless it is accompanied by "in my opinion" or something similar. If I don't, then that's what I mean. Everyones taste is different, everyones idea of what they are going for is also different. I also go by the, when you pay for it, I'll do it your way method. If I don't like the looks of something, I won't comment on it. On the flipside, just because I don't comment, doesn't mean I don't like it. Sometimes I forget, sometimes I just don't comment. Other times, believe it or not, I'm trying to shorten the post and intend on commenting later but again, forget. Nothing is meant by either. If I ever make a comment that is taken as making fun of or insulting, as Johnboy says it was taken wrong because that is, nor will it ever be, my intent. Typing things without vocal tones and facial expressions is tough for a guy like me who speaks sarcasm alot. Can I be straight and rude? Yes. Under certain circumstances I can cut with the best. In the end it serves no purpose. To hide behind the literal dictionary meaning of the word critique or criticism, is a joke. An excuse to be rude and a weak justification. Please. Don't insult me by using that as a reason to show your insecurities in your own self by trying to draw attention to someone else as if you are so much better, by twisting it as if I'm wrong and am too dumb to see it. Will I humor you? Yes. Did you win? No. You look like a fool. I know it and so do most others. There is no one who frequents the diner that does this and everyone gets along and some good information is passed and some very helpful ideas are shared. Not everyone will enjoy the same things, or have the same views of how it would look best. If that were the case, we'd never find our cars in the parking lot. They'd all look the same. Giving someone your take on their work is helpful, yes it is, very helpful. It helps to see your work in a different light. To offer the opinions so someone can look and decide if they like it or not is exactly how it should work. Most people, dare I say 99.9% of the folks who come to these forums behave in just that manner. Do I want to do my layout and rolling stock like some peoples, even some of you here in the diner? Noooo. But does that mean I don't like it? Or respect and enjoy seeing the fruits of your labor? Oh H.E. double toothpicks NO!!! If all would just behave as you want to be treated, we would get along great in this world. That will never happen though. Too bad.
Anyway, enough of THAT comment that apparently turned into a rant not intended for anyone in here. Or really out there either. It's all over in the world. It just started coming out and I didn't stop it.
Oh well, (as Ray would say, "deep subject". Except in my case I shall add, "for a shallow mind") Prayers for those in need.

Hello everyone, I've just finished a few weeks deployment with the Naval reserve, can't tell you where, but it was not a nice place. Now I have a curious quetsion. Back in 1952 our state railways purchased a locomotive from Baldwin Lima Hamilton.

Oz-Ray - welcome back! That loco looks somewhat like a downsized USRA Light Mikado, with a different smokebox door and a buffer beam. To me it looks much smaller, though, making it difficult to kitbash from a BLI Mike.

OzRay, The wiki page for the Mikado says it's a variation of the USRA light Mikado, but with the changes Ulrich noted, although I don't think it's shorter save for the tender.

Went with my wife to the doctors yesterday, and was going to stop by Michaels for the "pop toppers" or how ever you say it. I was looking around and couldn't find them. A worker came up to me and said, "My husband would like to know this, and I'm sure you will". I thought maybe its due to me wearing a "Cubs" baseball jersey. No..............MY FLY WAS UNZIPPED . After I fixed it, I asked if they carry what I'm looking for. The lady never heard of it. I know another Michaels has it, but that;s in the other direction. So I bought 20 foam brushes for a $1, and some paint. So the total I spent was $2.00, and a embarrassing moment.
The plan today..........Library, and maybe around town. Later the basement.

Mornin, ANOTHER beautiful day today. Sunny and a high of around 84. Got some groceries to unload at the restaurant. Actually just put away, I don't know why I keep saying unload. A sump pump to repair and a sump pump to replumb. Along with assorted odds and ends.
Hope to stop in the layout room off and on today. I just may try to mold a rock face or two also. I'll have to do it sooner or later.

Did I say this morning, that I had not planned anything specific for the day? Well, Petra took care of that! We had some leftover paint and she really made me paint the corridor outside our flat. Now, that´s really not our job to do, but it did not look nice, when we moved in. It does look nice and clean now, but I am tired and weary. I slipped into my old army fatigues and will be going for a good rest soon.
Robby -aren´t these the moments that make a grown man blush? After a little while you´d be laughing about that. Happened to me once, while I was in front of an audience of several hundred people... did not think it was funny, then.
OZ-Ray - that loco looks so much lower in profile when compared to the regular USRA Mike. It probably has smaller drivers and a lowered boiler - difficult to kitbash!

OZRay: 5903 passes through Hawkesbury River station with a Sydney bound goods train. Shades of the British Empire! To the north of us here on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore is Cape Breton Island in the South of which is Port Hawkesbury, and in the North Sydney! Looking at the model, amazing that the D 59s fit on a 60' turntable. It looks way bigger. (BTW, on trains in heaven, take a boo at Isaiah 6:1 LOL.)
In the Steam Fest video, the triple header had a whale back oil tender in frontof the first passenger coach- I was interested in that, as I scratched one from a "pump" type tooth paste tube in the 1990s in Alberta to rationalize the fan trip status of a Docksider I had!
Speaking of Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, this turned up on YouTube. An artist was here on Sober Island in early March, apparently. He took this video at a place we call "The Whales" because of the shape of the basalt bedrock jutting into the ocean there.
Jeff: Did the car battery situation get resolved? That's a powerful one you're after for sure. On photos, I find I hardly ever use flash these days. I brighten things up in Windows Photo Editor, but that has its drawbacks too towards over-exposure of the rest of the scene. Hope your Drs appointment goes well.

Todd- I feel you on the "rant" (for lack of a better word)... I find it hard to convey what I want in here as well, most of the time I end up deleting most of what I wrote, because when I re-read it, sounds like an insult...
About writing a "novel", I have had it where I start on something for in here, and when I finish, probably would have taken us to a new location!!! (At least the way we worked things "before")
I love the fact that we, the "Diner" people, are so different! We get the persepective from such diverse angles. THAT, in-and-of-itself, is what helps me to become better at this hobby without picking up so much as a paint brush or needle-file. We can learn from sharing with each other, and giving a "positive" critique. I feel it is such a shame when people leave this "Forum" (the site in general, not the Diner) and don't come back due to a negative experience. I pray for those who constantly belittle others, hoping that He would step in and show them the "TRUTH" about how life is supposed to be lived.
Yeah, before anyone starts, NO I am NOT perfect, and will NEVER be perfect. I too, can cut with the best of them. But as you have said, What's the point? It does NOTHING but cause more grief. I THANK GOD every day that I have found this Diner! I would not be anywhere near inspired enough to get into the hobby to where I am now, nor would I have been as far in my training without the help and support I have gotten from you, my friends!

Wow, where to begin?? Like i'm sure a ton of us, I loved trains as a kid, and cobbled together a nice HO-scale layout that eventually ended up in boxes as I got older. Then I had kids and voila - my son and daughter are both interested in trains, especially my son. We go to a local train show here very fall, and last October a very nice gentleman at the swap meet gave my son a box of starter stuff - an old Tyco transformer, a couple of box cars, and a loop of track. From that, we built a 6x16 cookie cutter DCC HO layout in the garage that I am currently adding an industrial section and yard/staging area onto. My daughter likes to help build scenery and my son is all about running the longest trains he can - and loves the new sound-equipped P2K H10-44 that just arrived. All in all, it's a fabulous family activity that we all enjoy, and i've had some incredible help from the kind folks in this forum, for which I say thank you!

jeffrey-wimberly I'm not much of a steamer man anymore but I like that steamfest video.
I am a steam man first, hence all our trips to nearby Scranton and Steamtown. We are planning again to go to Strasburg RR in SE PA again this summer. Can't come soon enough for us. WE go sometimes jusst to watch them play with the steamer{s}, and nothing else. Labor day weekend they have trainfest with diesels included. Trains of all types come. We wanted so badly to go to the steamfest at Owasso Michigan last summer but had absolutely no money to do so. Nuttin' like the smell of coal burning, steamoil and grease in the morning to wake up the senses. In the yard near here with diesels idling, especially on cloudy rainy days the fumes are enough to choke a jackrabbit with its head in mole hole. But coal not so much.

I didn't want to say anything either that might hurt your feelings Jeff, but I IMO thought the unflashed pic looked realistic, great compared to the flashphoto-which looked...well kinda crappy. I am aware of your limited abilities and God only knows I prefer not to weather my trains so much. I'm glad you posted the unflashed pic as it shows a talent for making it look real. Flash and closeups can turn something ordinary in something odd. But we all knew that already, I thought so no need to mention it. ANd we all know the camera adds 20 lbs, makes fine details look unreal, and warps realism.

Keith- Sorry my good man. Didn't mean for you to have to deal with that so early in the morning. Or anyone for that matter. Like I said, it just sort of came out and as I read the thing after punching the post button, I said to myself, "why?"
Any way the cause of it was, even though I did not see the posting, I am well aware of what was more than likely said having been on the receiving end myself. Not fun, but for some, understandable. Jeff can defend himself and needs no help from me. He has modeled way more than I have and is way more experienced than many. He has learned different techniques to offset his ever increasing difficulties and they work. His modeling is nothing to be scoffed at. I have seen a picture of one, ONE, model this someone has done. I could express my opinion as to my thoughts, but I won't, tempting as it may be. Not in spite, but actual impressions. This is a model railroading forum not a photography forum. If it's so dark or blurred you can't see, well that's one thing, but if their intent is to show their model then some things are just nitpicking. If they are playing around with MRR photography, like Ray, then that is another thing all together. Of course no one was rude to Ray, that we know of, and there was no reason to be. We in the diner want to help if we can, not hurt to glorify ourselves in our own minds. Jeff does great work in spite of his situation and actually, should not even be a matter because he still has talent and that is evident in everything he does. OK, this is starting top sound like a jump on and save Jeff speech. It is not, like I said Jeff is very capable of taking care of hiomself when he chooses too. Actually, it could have been prompted regardless of who the target was. Him, anyone here or anyone else undeserving of it.
Yeesh!!!! It happened again, all I wanted to do was stop in and say, Great news Ray! I will continue to pray for her recovery.
