Has anybody ever seen a model of a model railroad on a layout? Example: On my layout there is a house with an open garage door that allows you to see details inside of the garage such as the pool table. What if instead of a pool table it was a model railroad?
Or what about a garden size layout in a backyard? Or perhaps live steamers in a park?
I don't care if it is operational. I think it would be cool just to have some miniture model railroaders enjoying their hobby on my layout.
Has anyone seen or built anything like that?
I have seen it done.
If my memory serves it was an "O" scale layout, with a non functioning garden railroad in a backyard.
It was interesting.

A few years back, someone on this forum (I think) had his own layout on his own layout.
Here is a working one.

O scale and # 1 scale can use Z scale for park trains. That has been donel
Check out the video of the train show in Europe that is posted here.

Brent:
Thanks for sharing that video! It is an amazing piece of work, in part I think, because it is such a simple design.
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Dave, when I first saw that, I thought, finally a scale I can use to model the CPR from coast to coast! However as soon as I had to do my first coupler spring, it was back to HO.
I saw this at a model railroading show a few years back:
IIRC, it was made by a Belgian group of model railroaders. It´s a Marklin Z scale train set.
Ulrich:
Interesting scene, especially the props.
Did it actually run? (May be a stupid question).
Brent!
I cant even contemplate just painting the locomotive and cars on the plastic tube. I guess it all relies on the power of suggestion.
My wife got a hoot out of seeing the video.
Thanks again.
Edit: Darned thing has my juices flowing. I have to figure out how to do something like that, if only so I can finally claim that I have a layout!
I built one of those years ago when I was with the Stephenson Society of Model Railroad Trainmen, a Freeport, Illinois group that operated the Fever River Railroad. It was in its own building, and the club positioned it on the layout that they had in the basement of the Reid Park Pavilion. I went off to college and the club got booted out of the park. They now have their own building near Wallace Yard (CN, originally IC) there in Freeport. I don't know what happened to that model. It wasn't operational, but the roof of the building was removable and a "sceniced" model RR was inside, along with club members discussing things on the porch.

Why, of course! The same guys built a HO car with open hood and a turning radiator fan!

At 44" wide (in Z scale), I'm glad to see the builder used wide radius curves for the layout (approx 18", it appears). Trains ALWAYS look better on wide radius curves!

A friend built a HO scale model of a former railroad station for another person's layout. In doing his research he learned the real depot housed an O scale model railroad club in the upermost floor originally intended for storage. Being a meticulous MMR, the model station includes the club's layout. No, it is not operational, but it is in the uppermost floor of the model station residing on the owner's layout.
Edit: Obviously I have yet to figure out how to post a photo. If you wouold like to see what it looks like, send me a PM with your email address and I will send the photo.
Edit #2: I think I have the picture posting thing figured out. If so it should appear here somewhere.
First off, thank you all for the replies.
This is really cool! I love stuff like this. Thanks for posting. Could that be T scale? I heard it is the smallest operating scale.
The barn at left edge of town of Johnston on my 3 x 7 foot N layout has a Lionel layout in the loft.
Here's a view that shows the layout.
I had the idea of building a model building with a model railroad in it, and made 4 attempts over a period of 25 years before I got it pretty much. I saw kindergarten kids playing, using blocks made from salvaged 2x4s to make a "train" on the classroom floor. It hit me, 2x4 has same approximate bulk as cross-section of Lionel O gauge trains, and scale 2x4s are available in N. I built a dollhouse scale 1:12 proportion layout surface, photographed it, reduced it to size of a commemorative stamp and printed it out. Cut out table sections and mounted legs under them. Barn if 1 1/4 inches long. I cheated by making models of Lionel O gauge. The real barn belonged to Lat Lattimore of Fort Worth area and his "Texas and Africa RR" was HO.
RR_Mel I scratch built our dream retirement house several years back. It includes a unattached two story garage. The second floor is my train room. My layout is only viewable through the windows. The house and garage are at the edge of my layout at the end of Red Mountain Road. The room is illuminated so with a good eye it can be seen. I only took a couple of pictures during construction, this shows my current layout upstairs in my garage, it’s a to scale size painted piece of card stock. Unfortunately if isn’t going to happen. I still have a lot of finish work to do. Mel Modeling the early to mid 1950s SP in HO scale since 1951 My Model Railroad http://melvineperry.blogspot.com/ Bakersfield, California I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.
That is the idea. I would like to build something like this. I would like to have an L shaped track plan with a mountain in the corner with a tunnel going through it. Something simple and easily identified as a model train set. I might have to scratch build a loco and a couple of cars.
Thanks for sharing. Your models are nice.

Awesome! That is really amazing work.
When Ray and Renee Grosser retired their famous HO "Nostalgia Trip" exhibition layout and switched to O scale, they included a model of the Nostalgia Trip in an illuminated upper floor of an O scale structure. Great Model Railroads 2012 has a photo.

I once saw a G scale club layout at a train show. There was a house on the layout with a backyard garden layout represented with a Marklin Z scale layout. A simple oval with G scale people admiring it. Wish I had pics for you.
