 IMHO ; Contests and challenges are a waste of bandwith - 'someone else's' bandwith. Aren't these forums supposed to be the sharing of info et al ? Not to be cranky about it but isn't that why most forums discourage the - 'what color is your favourite ....?' polls that were trendy for a while.

There is alot of perhaps useful information that I have missed or not passed on because I avoid these type of threads.

 Just a thought - sorry to rain on the parade.

Your completely entitled to that opinion and I do respect it, but I have to strongly disagree, and BTW you've contradicted yourself Wink [;)], you said forums are about the sharing of ideas, well isnt that EXACTLY WHAT THESE CONTESTS DO?Big Smile [:D]

To me, contests like this are whats great about these forums, we get to see how different modelers respond to a given set of criteria that is often very similar to what alot of us run into planning our own layouts, be seeing these different responses we are able quite often to find solutions to our own problems or inspiration to try something that one of the contestants has show on their entry. This MIX of ideas is what these forums are all about. So I say keep em up, they generate a tremendous amount of creativity and great discussions.Smile [:)]

I'd be up for a logging layout. My current mining layout is actually based on a lot of logging influences.Mischief [:-,]

   Have fun with your trains

I thought it would be fun to enter, but quickly discovered that I do not have what it takes to compete here.

I had hoped to "Throw out" an idea for a layout someone might see, and think (it) would be fun to build, and possibly study up on,vs the 10,000 (weekly) posts of "gimme a layout idea" (ad nauseum)

I still think my layout was a sound concept, I got mired down in the fastrak software, and will NOT return to it. Ever. Unfortunately, my redrawn (over super light blue) fastrak submission looked poor. I did not expect to be lambasted over every detail, but that was due to my naivete' in how this works.

You may note that I did not vote at all.I will continue to enjoy the forum, but will shy away from the building contests and their threads.

I like the idea Mouse, it would draw some good ideas from the N scale people, it should be a good contest.

This concept cleanly needs more work, but provide a frame work for discussion

Goals;

  • 1) For the contest manage;
  • a. To provide a format that is easy to initiate.]
  • b. To provide a format that is easy to tally in the end
  • 2) For the layout designer;
  • a. To provide a format that is easy to enter
  • b. To provide a format that will insure relevant issues are addressed
  • 3) For the contest voters;
  • a. To provide a format that easy to use for voting
  • b. To provide a format that encourages feedback to the designers
  • i. To provide a format to insure the desired items are considered
  • ii. To provide a format that encourages comments.

Possible approach;

When a contest is initiated, the contest manager makes starts the thread and makes three posts;

  • 1) A post defining the scope, requirements , and criteria for the contest
  • 2) A post providing a "form" for a designer to enter the contest
  • 3) A post providing a "form" for voters to vote in the contest

The exact form of the three posts will need to be fought out later, but;

The first post might include such items as;

  • 1) The size and shape of the shape available, the "requirements"
  • 2) The contest closing date and time
  • 3) Other items as desired such as the desired layout theme, era, and so on, the contest specific "criteria"

The second post might include a "form" that might include items such as;

  • 1) A link to the location (URL) where the layout image is located
  • 2) A Outline of topics the designer should address such as;
  • a. The scale and/or gauge
  • b. The CAD design software used, if any
  • c. The brand and type of track if sectional track is used
  • d. Other comments as to the theme and/or era or other matters of interest

The thirds post would include a "form" that might include items such as;

  • 1) The title for the layout the voter desires vote on
  • 2) Maybe a repeat the location (URL) where the layout image is located
  • 3) A list of yes/no questions to determine the layout has met the "requirements" specified by the contest manager. A "no" should require a comment and allow the voter to leave the criteria below blank if they desire.
  • 4) A list of criteria to rate the layout on (say a one to five scale) with space provided for comments such as;
  • a. Accessibility of all track
  • b. Ease of construction and maintenance
  • c. Operational potential
  • d. And so on
  • e. A "1" or "5" score should require a comment
  • 5) A space for general overall comments
  • 6) A space to warn of potential problem areas

To enter the contest, a designer would

  • 01) Design the layout using the desired software. The design should include a title in text box at the top. Comments that are needed to understand the design should be included in a text box at the bottom.
  • 02) Load the image to their favor "photo album" site
  • 03) Copy the location to the clipboard
  • 04) Go to page one, the second post for the contest
  • 05) Click the "Quote" button
  • 06) When the window opens, paste the URL in the space provided using the Insert Image button
  • 07) Select the "form" including the image
  • 08) Copy the "form" to then clipboard
  • 09) Click the back button on the browser
  • 10) Click the "Reply" button
  • 11) Paste the "form" in window using the "Paste from Windows" button
  • 12) Fill in the other items
  • 13) Hit the "Post" button

To vote, a poster would

  • 01) Go the post for design they desire to vote for
  • a. Right click on the layout image
  • b. Click the "Copy as Short Cut" menu selection
  • 02) Go to page one, the second post for the contest
  • 03) Click the "Quote" button
  • 04) When the window opens, paste the URL in the space provided using the Insert From Windows button
  • 05) Select the "form" including the image
  • 06) Copy the "form" to then clipboard
  • 07) Click the back button on the browser
  • 08) Click the "Reply" button
  • 09) Paste the "form" in window using the "Paste from Windows" button
  • 10) Fill in the other items
  • 11) Hit the "Post" button

Notes

  • 01) Voters (maybe raters would be a better word) should be free to rate as many or as few layouts as they desire. If a poster rates a layout multiple times, the last rating counts. (the idea here is to provide feedback to all the designers, not just the top three)
  • 02) The scoring would be by adding the points received for each layout under the criteria
  • 03) Any vote that does NOT include at least some comments should be rejected. The designers desire more feed back then just a score for their efforts. Voter should be strongly encouraged to state what they like and dislike about a layout.

Narrow gauge logging! Short cars. Tight turns, switch backs and steep elevations.

What, you want MORE pain?

How about a 1 x 8 N-scale book shelf switching module that must allow for a through single track mainline say 3" from the front?

Have fun

2 x 8 Contest Deconstruction

Well at least from my end this was the easiest. There were not as many problems, however, there did seem to be some misunderstanding as to what was the goals. There were a lot of LDE type layouts although, when it time to establish the rules that requirement was axed. Still some good layouts got low votes.

What next guys--a rest or another one? How does a 2 x 4 N-trak sound?
