Thanks for the great welcome guys, and I m sure even gal railroaders!!! My main interest is DIESEL !!!! It s big and its born to be BAADD!!!! Nevertheless, I m now taken back to the steam era, They are so grand those beasties. Being a fireman too, I have put together steamer fire engines, you know the one with the big boiler in the back, with a coal lit fire breathing up it s behind (I ll be kind about that one). Steam is what started it all, and I m now considering to invest in a big steam loco, not sure what type yet, but workin on it. Got an SD-45 CP; 2 BNSF Heritage II Dash niner pumpkins, And a CN Dash niner so far. I ve only started last year, being 1 year now that I ve gotten into G-Scale. Done the previous in HO, loved it, have many many sets and track and then DISCOVERED G scale. Who says size isn t everything, to me it is, but its also the QUALITY !!!! And BTW, my good friend Marty mentioned this Rene gal with a strong arm. How do you get to talking to a gal like that, she ll need two arms to hold on to me !! The best way to answer that question would be, that Capt. Bob is right. Attention is definately the main draw for it a person I know when asked why he liked his bike to be that loud simply answered " You looked when you heard it right?" Another reason could be to some people the sound of a Harley is akin to the sound of mother's heartbeat, and if you can hear it it's great, if you can feel it it's even better. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and there is something about the sound of powerful engines that just gets to you, some of the old radial (round) engines are just so amazing to hear when they start. Like the Pratt & Whitney 985 it's 9 cylinders with 985 cubic inch displacement and it basically sounds like you just started 4 and a 1/2 Harleys all at once. That is definately along the lines of being able to hear and feel the power that the engine is putting out.

Your comments are right on the mark and the description of engine sounds being comforting to some people is also right on. I too love the sound of old radial engines, but we’re in a definite minority. And besides, you have to go to an airport to hear them. You don’t see too many 9-cylinder radials being revved up downtown.

The story of your bike rider friend is flawed. If I pulled down my pants in the middle of town because I wanted attention, I'd get it. But I'd probably also get arrested. Why? Because most people would be offended by the sight and therefore it’s against the law. Most people are also offended by that ear-busting noise coming from those unmuffled motorcycle pipes but we have no laws against that, why?
