Dep,
Congratulations! I don't think I saw the one you purchased when I was looking for mine. (But then again I was looking for a 681) I managed to pick up what looks like a beautiful 681 with the 2046 Pennsy tender (so what its a new repro shell I have an original spare) on 3/24 that should arrive today by UPS Ground from sunny CA for $202.50 plus $12.50m s/h with a full no questions asked return policy of price and shipping both ways. How can I go wrong? I'll let you guys know what it looks like. Can't wait to see how many cars it can pull.
Since I'm a visual in my hands kind of buyer I find internet purchases difficult. I'm always afraid I'm gonna get duped.
I'm on a steamer binge, 2026, 2036, 2046!
Mike
PS: The same model and condition steamer (allegedly) sold for $65 less les than 2 hours later. Was monitoring both. Don't you hate it? Just have to move on I guess. Prefer Buy It Now also, too many people jacking up prices with wild bidding!
Still waiting for mine. The wait is the worst part of these buys

Thanks Jim! At this rate they may arrive before the loco!!!

Thanks Chief...good to be back. And I am trying to be a kindler, gentler Dep...to paraphrase a former President I think Jim is the one to look to for turbine info. I'm still learning....and accumulating 736 Berk is very I think I have an MTH version in NYC markings. The 736 is supposed to have great pulling power too.

The waiting is by far the worst part. I checked out the unit you picked up when I got home last evening and it is a beaut. I can see why you are chomping at the bit the get it.
I did get to check out my 681 and matching 2046 tender that arrived yesterday. It is every bit as nice as the photos showed even with the paint chip on the catcher (gives it character). I'm impressed by the pulling power of this loco. I'm no expert but I think I got a good deal.
A Berk is next (when there $$$)
ezmike: No kidding. Even worse is the seller gave me the insurance number instead of the tracking number. Makes me uneasy that they sent it US Mail. Mail in my town is horrible to say the least. Every day that goes by I go deeper into worry mode
Turbines are known to be excellent pullers. Good weight on the 671 and magnetraction on the 681/682. Yeah...after seeing what the postwar 736 is going for, I'll need to be adopted by Chief to afford one
I got my 736 (with a 12 wheeled 2671 tender) dirt cheap. I bought it right out from underneath a post war nut on this very forum! It's running on FASTRACK now. Will be for decades to come.
Jim
Out of curiosity I checked E-Bay. A few 736 locos for sale. Not horrific pricewise. But in various conditions from "just okay" to "fantastic". No "Buy it nows" available, though.

I sure hope that's not the same guy who offered to sell you these for about half what they are worth with original boxes, inserts, paper and instruction sheets that you turned down:

that's just wrong on so many counts.

LOL!! I told you I would be a gold medal winner!

Hi Frank. You didn't say how much "half of what they are worth" is.
Et tu, Dep? Oooooh, you guys are killin' me...

Jim: I'm just thinkin' half of too much is still "too much".

I'm just watchin' here but seems to me like I could have convinced my wife to let me get those if only to turn them around on ebay. Don't want no stinking diesel on my rails!!
Frank's price was a super incredible deal. But I was worried that my two boys would damage the trains or the boxes or the papers. They are precotious to say the least. So I reluctantly turned him down, only to regret it. A few weeks later I told him I'd take them, but he had decided to keep them. By far my biggest toy train regret.
I actually didn't know Frank wanted the 736 I got until after the deal was done. He has a gorgeous 726, so he isn't hurting.

Ahhhh...I see now. Oh man...been there done that Trainz actually has a 726RR for sale on their website for a pretty decent price. It's not magnetration (Korean War release) but that's no big loss for my use. I have the MTH tracks and they're non-magnetic.

Very tempting

It was south of $300.00

LOL! Frank you must love pouring salt into wounds! Wow, yeah I'm pretty sure I'd have taken you up on that and then cranked up my TurboLister program for ebay. Always room for more track and more steam loco's!

DOH!!!
Here are photos of the 681 I picked up off ebay the weekend before last. The photos don't do it justice. Except for the chip on the catcher nose you have to hold it in your hand and search or at least look pretty hard to find scratches/chips. The tender is a repro shell but that doesn't matter to me but the frame is absolutely spotless, no rust or oxidation anywhere.

Runs great and whistles loud and strong.
Chief,
Here's the thing, I also have a 12-wheel 2671 that I purchased from my local train shop as a "mis-match" tender with a beautiful 2046, minimal chips and scratches, had both marker lights, un-cracked headlight, etc for $150 after a complete overhaul by the train shop's service department. So what the tender was missing a step and the previous owner of the loco rubbed off the 2046 decal. One really good repro tender shell and a decal from another source later and you wouldn't know it. I believe that the 2 tenders are technically interchangable so I can put them with which ever and run'em. Even put backup lights in both tenders. Boy, I'm having a ball, spending a lot onf money, but having fun.
ezmike: That 681 deal you got blows my 682 out of the water!!!! You even got the boxes!!!! Cool!!!
Chief: Think I will wait for a magnetraction 736 instead of going for the one at Trainz. I think the Trainz loco might be a bit steep in price too.
You might want to check this out. Both a 736 and tender although they are being sold separately. Probably to raise extra cash.

Well my 682 and 2046 tender arrived today. I am a bit disappointed with it. The E-bay ad says "They almost look like new". That's a bit of an exageration. On the loco I can see a touch-up spot on the boiler and the two rollers will need replacement. Not sure but I think the steps are broken off both sides of the tender. Have to compare it with one of my replacement tender shells. It's okay...but not great.
Dep, now for the rest of the story. That was during the Jim A the stingy days. Now he has began to dig up some of that money he burried in his yard. Missing the Santa Fe F units was part of the learning, "You snooze, you loose." He use to be so tight with his money, I called him SQUEEKY.

Awww geez...I can't mess with Jim. He's been real nice to me getting the 6200 decals for my new S2 and lots of good advice. Maybe he's turned over a new leaf?
