Got one...finally!!!
Posted by Deputy on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 9:38 AM

Been lurking on E-Bay since the "Christmas hike" looking for a reasonable 682 turbine. Finally found one yesterday. None previously had a "buy it now" price and they all skyrocketed well above what they were worth (or what I was willing to spend). Nailed this one yesterday for $275 plus $25 shipping. Looks to be in good shape.

Very nice, Dep. I have a Williams 671 that I love to run. Best of luck with your new 682!

Hello Deputy:

She looks like a beauty.  I had a 682 when I was a kid.  Good luck, I hope she is a good runner.

Thanks Jim! This 682 completes my prewar turbine collection. Well...almost. I don't have a 671RR. But that is a low priority for me. I been in hiatis (wherever that is!!!) as far as posting on here. My train activities took 2nd place to buying property next to my house. Laugh [(-D]

Thanks John. Keeping my fingers crossed she is okay as far as running. Smile [:)]

Dep,
I by far no expert, but that white stripe on the side doesn't look right... I thought they were all black?

Brent,

The white running board stripe is factory correct on the 682 version of the turbine.

Thanks Bruce!

After posting I did some checking and was able to correct myself... got caught up looking at other stuff!  LOL!!!  I find myself easily distracted by trains!

If Brent is referring to the prototype (There was only one), I have never seen a photograph of it in other than solid black.  The oiler gizmo that Lionel added is also grossly larger and flashier than the real thing.  I prefer the 681 for its lack of both of these gimmicks.

I hear ya, Brent!   With the flurry of PW loco questions on here today it's been hectic.   There's been a lot of interesting facts that I didn't know come to light.  726, 736, 773, 226E, 681, 682, 671, 2020......I'm gettin' dizzy! Wink [;)]

Yep...white stripe on the side is correct for the 682. But I'm surprised nobody picked up that the oiler linkage is installed wrong. I suspect Jim spotted it but was just being nice by not razzing me Laugh [(-D]  The stationary piece that is attached to the body of the loco with a screw should point towards the BACK of the loco and not down as pictured. Lots of times people install the part facing the wrong way. it's common to see 682s on E-Bay this way Wink [;)]

You do know the auction stated that it has been restored right? That would explain two things: the price and the nice condition.

What's that old song by the rock group Bread??

Ahhh yes..."It Don't Matter to Me". Big Smile [:D]

It's not like I'm buying an original L-88 Corvette that has to be NCRS correct or something. ALL my locos are RUNNERS. The fact it's been restored is a PLUS for my purposes. Saves me the time and effort of doing it myself Big Smile [:D]

Cool,

I'd like to get one. Actually, I'd like to get them all, the 671,681, and the 682. Maybe the 2020. Hope she serves you well. Stick a Hotshot behind her and watch those drive wheels go.

Dep,

That is a beautiful 682.  Hope it runs as good as it looks.  Did you see that the keystone decal is missing from the boilerfront?

I must confess the 2020 is NOT in my collection. I've had the 682 as my main priority and haven't looked at them too closely. You should check oiut the Williams S2 Turbines as well as the MTH and Lionel versions. Lionel is the most pricey...but also the LARGEST!!!!!  Any and all of them are fantastic pullers, though. Thumbs Up [tup]

DOH!!! I actually missed that, but it's not that critical. Not sure but I think I can get the decal from a supplier. I know I can get a repro boiler front with the decal on E-Bay because I bought one for my 681 turbine.

Congrats on the purchase.

Before I read the post, I was guessing from the title that you had maybe scored the CCI turbine. ;)

Dep,

Unless my information is wrong, the keystone decal on the 682 has the number 6200 on it.  This might be different than decals on earlier turbines.  I know it's only gonna be a runner but in case authenticity is important there seems to be a difference.  BTW...Nice purchase!

Dave: CCI Turbine? I know 3rd Rail made a turbine a while back, but the one I saw on E-Bay was so expesive that NOBODY could meet the minimum price. Laugh [(-D]

Bruce: The repro boiler front I bought off E-Bay ($9.95) definitely has the 6200 Keystone on it. Unfortunately I don't see them advertised right now. Sigh [sigh]

 Dep,

I was remembering your comments in this thread from end of last year.

I thought maybe you had your eye on one of the Century Club models again! :D.

Dave:Ohhhhhhh....I getcha now. No, I saw some CC 671 turbines, but the prices were all pretty steep Sad [:(]. Plus buying the correct tender makes it even more pricey. They do have the good trainsounds and other features though. Thumbs Up [tup]

Dep, try Olsen's for the 6200 decal. Better yet, I'm going to be placing an order with them next week. I'll order one for you so you don't have to pay their minumum shipping charges ($7.00). Email me your mailing address. When I get the decal, I'll mail it to you.

Again, good luck with your 682! She's a beauty!

Jim: Yep...had insomnia last night and went searching for it. Part 671D at Olsens. Price is $1.33. Thanks a ton for ordering it for me. E-mail on the way. I'll send you a check for the decal and part of the shipping when I get it. Thumbs Up [tup]
