Reggie and John, great that you are getting the next generation in the hobby.  Keep up the good work.  For those interested, Dillard's is selling the Polar Express set for $140.00.  If you have a young one to introduce to the hobby, this would be a great, inexpensive way to do it.

Been nursing this ground cover project along, and am finally starting to see some results. Looks like the hosting site I was using took a dump, as most of my photos have magically transformed into a red X. I have to get the other photos uploaded elsewhere.

nice photos, all, gearing up to build my next 3-rail layout but in the meantime, here's what's doing...

 

On Christmas morning I completed my first boxcar (see attached or go to David Vergun photo album page 2 to see it there). It is inspired by a much much better Steve King Sandy River boxcar that I saw on a recent steamup in Virginia.

The boxcar is intended to look beaten and weatherworn, as I’m designing my trains to complement the earthiness of the garden, as the garden is the most important element in my scheme of things.

All materials except the wheels I fabricated. The brake wheel is even soldered, with the brake ring made from a slice of copper plumbing. All of the flat wire used, such as for the door mechanism, is strap iron thrown away by builders.

I took photos of Steve’s boxcar but failed to measure it so I guessed at it and made it 27” coupleer to coupler, 9” tall to the catwalk, and 5.5” wide.

Trucks are made from wood and brass (attached photo).

In the photo, you can see the river to the right and in the distance, 2 tracks of the 7/8n18 line and in the far distance the 7/8n2 bridge. Also in the photo, behind the boxcar is a thriving curry plant. Whenever you brush against it it gives off a pungent curry odor.

I now will be starting work on a 7/8n2 Plymouth and I would like to start on a Maine combine but cannot locate any plans.

I must also get busy on the7/8n18 line, as I lost a flatcar to the beagle the other day. She seems disinclined thus far to eat the 7/8n2 boxcar, however.

well i got the train bug to bite my niece as she spent 95% of her time at my house around the christmas tree. the other 5% eating. my niece jamia and kennedy

 a little derailment caused by the youngest niece wanting to touch the train as is passes and her big sister trying to get it back to running. looked like she new what she was doing. she knew how to work the uncouplers but not get it back on track that good yet. so i had to eventually help.

I have retreated to the basement with three of the granddaughters (3, 5, & 7) a little quieter, but not much.  They are playing chutes and ladders.

The three year old got an MTH Rudulph train.  She liked it a lot.

 

Sounds and runs great, but after filling it with smoke fluid about 5 or 6 times, they insisted I turn off the smoke.

Here is what Frankie and Loralyn [his wife] gave me [a long gift cert to Todd's].  Lionel lamp.  700E actually starts up and runs with sounds when you turn lamp on [sounds off/on button on back].  I think it is about S size.  Hit the button twice and just lamp.  Now in my office as back light to computer.

Santa brought this for the little one!  Trains sounds, working headlight turns on as it runs thru the tunnel, it even stops at the station, and re-starts! We added a few Thomas items as well.
