Marty,

You are a very smart businessman and your little poll on the forum is a feather in your cap.

We have a Ford dealer in Columbus, who 25 years ago when spreadsheets first appeared on the scene, began keeping track of what people actually bought in terms of models and accessories.  As his data base grew and grew, he could see trends in the buying habits of his customers especially when it came to optional accessories.

Needless to say, he was one of the first to order cars for his lot based upon the study of his data.   When a customer began shopping around for a car at the half dozen Ford dealer's in Central Ohio, they would find "just what they were looking for" on his lot.

He is now the largest Ford dealer in the US, if not the world.

Marty,

I subscribe to CTT and buy OGR at the news stand if it looks good.

Not happy to read about Williams going to a preorder system. It makes me wonder if they are in unsteady financial straights. Hope not. They make wonderful products. I hope they'll be around for decades to come.

I buy both magazines plus Model Railroad News and Trains, however, I don't pay much attention to the ads, especially the large ones consisting of long lists of items spanning many pages.   Ads that are short and  to the point work better for me with a web site address listed to provide more details (i.e. the long list of items that are for sale, etc).

Subscribe to both but find that CTT offers more projects to complete for the average Joe.

I buy them at the newstand: I get CTT always, Trains magazine next, Model Railroader if there's an article that interests me and OGR, just that they haven't been able to get OGR for some months now - so I'm a little behind on OGR.

My leaning is now definitely to CTT. The editorial content of OGR absolutely leans to MTH and the scale side, which interests me less. On the other hand, I don't get the product bias from CTT that I feel from OGR... I just want to read the review - I'll make my own decision. CTT definitely has a better balance of articles and includes us toy train guys as frequently as the scale guys, though I do wi***hey would review more basic products even if those might seem boring, it's still nice to know how well they're made and operate, even if they do lack the electronic extras.

I will miss Fred Dole's superb photographic skills when he goes, and I really like the series of conversations with the CEO's of the various companies, but I could care less about the correct chuff rate (I prefer the MPC Mechanical Sound of Steam for super-duper exacto proto realism!), when TMCC XXI version 17 is coming out, when DCS will take over the world (probably by gunpoint), who had lunch with who at YORK or the exact rivet count of some $1,000-2,000.00 train engine that I will never want. On that basis, CTT gets my vote.

I'm a charter subscriber to CTT. I love it. I pick up a couple of OGRs each year at the bookstore if I'm between CTTs or want some airplane reading, etc.
I do think OGR needs to be careful about overemphasizing one manufacturer. I'm a Lionel guy through and through.

I read them both at the local hobby shop. I never buy OGR and will occasionally buy a copy of CTT if an article gets my interest.

I flip right by any ads that are listing of merchandise prices.

I also flip right by ads that don't show the product or the use for the product.
