The new NYC Flyer passenger cars in the add-on set appear to be lighted in the catalog, but no mention of that feature is found in the text. I'd like to know what the deal is with that, but either way, I like them.

Yup, it's a beautiful catalog alright, I only wish Lionel had brought out the Norfolk and Western J611and passenger cars last year! I bought the MTH 611engine and cars believing it may be my last chance! (LOL...I should have known better and I'm still waiting for my MTH "Pre-ordered" cars too} Not that I'm totally disapointed. I love MTH loco with the exception of the station sounds. (station sounds limit the loco to only one train name.) The MTH cars are OK, but I really love the new Lionel cars with interiors! They are exceptional! Can't afford to change now, Shucks!

rozy: use the link at the top of page one of this thread.

Has anyone else noticed on the Chessie Steam Special that the "Baby Madison" cars now come with detailed interiors?

This is a huge leap forward for O-27 operators!

I like the "Hotbox" cars, the starter sets/add-on packs make me want to open a retail store, and the two PWC sets are putting a crimp on my 2005 vacation budget!

LIONEL, I have just three words for you: Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Frank, I have a copy of Windmill presses video with toy TV comercials of the 50's and 60's. It has a commercial of a kid playing with a military set like you describe on a super O layout.

I remember seeing Lionel Trains advertised in TV back in the 60's. The one that stuck in my head was the military cars with rockets that blewup the exploding box car. I can still visualize that kid running the rocket cars.

OK, I'll admit that I'm a prewar/postwar guy and am not going to be buying anything from this catalogue, but I certainly am excited over it! This is probably the best catalogue that Lionel has put out in years! I mean that very sincerely. Looking through it conveys the excitment many postwar catalogues do. This is exactly the direction that Lionel should be going! They've really put an effort into making decent starter sets. Those add-on sets are definetly what should be available to keep people in the hobby after they've purchased a starter set. They're affordable and have a lot of play value. There are so many new items that are very unique and are certainly bound to be very popular! They've added many great trains for both the toy and hi-rail crowd. I could probably say something good about everything in the catalogue! One thing that definetly needs to be singled out and Lionel congratulated on is that they're actually making a good, honest effort to please the American Flyer crowd. I was much more than impressed with their Flyer offerings!

Way to go, Jerry Calabrese! May you long be the president of this great company!

(The only thing that's missing, though, is seeing these fine trains in places like Toys R Us and Wal-Mart, having them advertised on TV, etc. I know we've all had this discussion many times before, but I think that if Lionel really tried getting it's trains out to the general public right now that they'd probably go a lot farther than they would have a few years ago. They've got the right products, plus their trains are somewhat in the spotlight right now due to the Polar Express and the MTH lawsuit/filing for bankruptcy protection.)

Now that Lionel has come out with railsounds 5.0, they may not have incorporated the changes into the low end sets and called it trainsounds.

RailSounds vs. TrainSounds?
Posted by Jumijo on Monday, January 24, 2005 8:58 AM
In the 2004 Lionel catalog, the NYC Flyer set is advertised as having "RailSounds". The 2005 catalog lists the set as having "TrainSounds". The description of each reads pretty much the same, so what is the difference between "RailSounds" and "TrainSounds" by Lionel?

Not to be picky but Williams made a beautiful brass cab forward in the early 90's. They still show up in the 400 dollar range on ebay. This will be the firest diecast cab forward that I know of. Anyway 3 cheers to Lionel and may they bury MTH.

I'm just a guy who frequents both the CTT and OGR forums. That's where I picked up the info and link on the new Lionel catalog, and I just thought I'd share the information here since it was requested. Glad to be of assistance.

Makes sense. I guess most of the GG1s that I have seen were sitting out of service in the yard in D.C. not doing much of anything except looking exceptionally good. [:)]

Nice catalog! I have to give Lionel credit for including the un politically correct words Merry
Christmas on their Holiday Tradition Special Set #6-31966. Yet there is little I noticed that will tempt me to whip out my credit card.

The steep prices and ho-hum selection only re-inforces my continued admiration for my post war stuff.

Thanks to LOU for web link I don't know who you are but you made my day!! I have been wanting a Sant Fe ABA setup since I was A kid in late 50's. does the engines in rear of catolog come with the all silver cars or was that just the price of engines? I find there prices not much higher than The other guy for command stuff. Personally I'm waiting for ta studios computer setup to hit the market It's very interesting to say the least and I can go back to just one system of command control. Thanks again for the link.

Jerry Calabrese may be the second comming of Josh (they have the same initials too).

The PWC 773 set is what I will order. It has all the right chemistry (for me). At $900 discount, I think it is a good value. A 773 with command control and railsounds plus three great operating cars. Throw in the seperate sale PWC TOFC too. The catalog pic shows the 1950 2426W style tender behind the hudson verses the 736 style plastic tender which is correct for the origional 1964 Hudson set. This is good. The origional tender is an 0 gauge pennsy style tender and is dwarfed by the Hudson making the 64 version undesireable. The confusing part is they offer a seperate sale 773W tender but it is the 736 style tender. My question is which tender will actually come with the set?

The Alaska geep set is a winner too. So is the GN sky blue U boat and new 0-4-0 switcher. The American Flyer light mikado is awesome.

Not a huge variety like last year but there is more stuff I like than I can afford.

It's a little time consuming to go through the whole catalog on line. BUT from what I went trhough, I was impressed with the idea of the add-on packs for the starter sets. This is a very good idea! Very important to small dealers who by nature of volume do not get the better wholesale prices, so they need items of value coming from the importer direct.

The line up of starter sets looked very good, although no modern roads. I did letterally jump out of my seat when I saw the CSX Waffle Box Car, the NS Hopper and the BNSF Ore Car in the starter car line up. FINALLY some current road names on affordable items.

Although I couldn't help but notice that prices were up on almost everything I noticed. The popular Dockside switcher went to $104.95 from $99.95. And the starter set cars went to $26.95. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, except that I think the list prices were already too high before the increases. I know the increases don't seem that big, but a dollar an hour pay increase isn't that much either and doesn't go that far.

Well I'm certain most working folks will also have no problems getting a raise in pay this year either.... (yeah, right). Here in NYS it took an override from the assemby to go past Govenor Pataki's veto of the minimum raise increase. His arguement was that increasing the base minimum pay rate would be bad for the economy. Wouldn't it make sense then that increasing prices would be no better?? Especially in an already competitive, tight economy.

And before anyone thinks I'm being negative again, my apologies. I'm just being a realist. As referenced to in the Bible, things always look different from the mountain top than they do down at the bottom in the valley.

Thanks for the link, Lou. I enjoyed looking at the catalog and drinking my coffee this cold Sunday morning here in Roger’s Corners.[:)]

The hotbox reefer and the penguin transport cars caught my eye as possibilities for my layout. The scrap yard and the fox and hounds accessories looked interesting, but it is hard to beat Mr. Piddles, my favorite.

I was disappointed to see that the CSX SD-60 in the new dark blue paint scheme is not offered in TMCC and why is the GG1 pictured with smoke blowing out the top? [?] I also thought that the operating Nesquik Milk Car was a classic with a good modern update. I have read posts where those who own the operating crane car were desirous of a Railsounds work car. They got their wish! [8D]

I suppose zoos in the 1940’s and 1950’s looked like the Choo Choo Barn Zoo, but I like my animals on my layout to run free although a truck did hit one pig last year.[:(]

Fastrack offerings are getting larger and larger. Why didn’t they make it solid rail? [:(] I wonder if that Railer works on other track types? Anybody know?

Last but not least, there are two add-on cars for the Polar Express. My Christmas shopping for my daughter is almost complete. Yeah!! [:D] Didn’t the movie have five cars? My hunch is that the next catalog will have some other add-on items. More presents for my daughter. (Did I ever mention that I finally succeeded in increasing the smoke from the PE Engine?)

Now on to the sports section of the newspaper so the prognosticators can tell me how the STEELERS are going to beat the Patsies and how the EAGLES are going to whip up on the Little Birdies.

PS. Where are all of those hgih priced buildings and houses that Lionel was pushing last year?

To me, the most interesting item in the catalog was the grain train set, but that was in the 2004 catalog also. The double stack cars looked like MTH's. I noticed that prices are moving up. I won't be placing any orders.
