Good morning,

Lite snow on the ground, 32 going to 34 then down to 24 tonight. Not much else.

Don, I would not go back for any reason if I were you. But,, if you do plan on a trip to the North Bluff to run some trains here. Sounds like they were all spoiled, kids including mom.

A few things to touch up on the CAD program and that will be that.

Good Afternoon from cloudy 38°F Southern Ohio,

Calling for a little snow in the next few days.  Still been an easy winter so far.  The Junior High basketball team lost last night 47-36.  It was a good game and our team’s shots were just not going in.  Bouncing off the rim, rolling around the rim and falling out, it was crazy.  Unfortunately one of the starters fell and broke his wrist so he will be out for the rest of the season.  The break was right in the growth plate so that’s not good.  He was probably the most skilled player.  We’ll see how the team rallies in response.

I believe I’ve found out how to get the pictures off my phone into photobucket.  It was simple in retrospect.  I did not have the right app on my phone.

Don – I understand what you are saying.  I do believe you have exceeded all reasonable expectations.  Too bad those kids don’t realize what they have.

May God bless

Jim

88 - It is.  I simply park at the parking lot off Valley St, and head west.  Takes about 40 minutes to get to the WM bridge over 40.  You literally are hiking next to the Western Maryland Scenic tracks, and the CSX (former B&O) Pittsburgh line is maybe a 100 yards away, across Wills Creek.  I think of the C&O Canal as my 184.5 mile treadmill, and the Great Alleghany Passage (GAP) as my 150 mile stair-stepper.  Both meet 13 minutes from my door.

fife...I have ridden the C&O Trail from Cumberland to DC on my bicycle and there are a lot of train tracks in the area.  Have you been over to Paw Paw, WV to see the canal tunnel?

Hello all

Back on the mountain for another week. We got a fair bit of new snow up here last weekend. Still getting over the cold I picked up the last time I was on shift.

Installed another throttle return spring and the choke cable on the Datsun last Sunday. Figured I might as well get the choke working before it warms up again:) Got in some of the parts I need to finish the cylinder head on the 4-dr Corvair so I can sell it to the club member who wants it. A guy at the barn is interested in the Corvan, so soon I may be down to just the Datsun and the bus. One for transportation and the other for living space. That's all I need.

I got both the '38 Yellow Coach and the '60 GMC running this week. Yellow Coach needed some more carb adjustments and the '60 just likes being cantankerous. Think I found one of it's issues though. It's been running off just the battery for a while now. Need to figure out why the generator has no output. Think something may have got hooked wrong when the cylinder head was replaced last summer.

Workiing w/ one of our student interns at the barn on the engine in the '48 AeroCoach. This is a 501" International Red Diamond. We were able to bar the engine over a few months ago. This week he pulled the oil pan and the spark plugs. So far things look ok in the crankcase. I squirted some ATF in the cylinders before I left to come up to work on Wed. When I get back we'll see if we can get it to turn more freely. My idea is to have the intern work on it a little each week and hopefully we can start it by the end of the semester.

I got in the Lionel 623 last week. I took it apart tonight. It was by far one of the dirtiest engines I 've gone through (excepting maybe one of the real ones:). The power pickup truck looked like it had been in a sawdust bin. Everything looks in decent shape. Only piece missing is one of the smaller front handrails. I was happy to find the sideframes were cast metal and the Pullmor motor is impressive. As we say, they don't make 'em like they used to:)

Good Morning from cool 32°F Southern Ohio,

Currently some snow flurries, but it is not expected to accumulate.

TGIF (remembering you Laz), have I mentioned how much I enjoy 4, 10 hour days?  It is a great shift to work.  Bride took the kids into school, so it's just me and the dogs and the chickens.  We got another egg yesterday, the oldest girl Felicity is a real help with the chickens and she harvested the egg when she got home from school.  We're adding calcium to their diet now to make the shells harder, not an unexpected with newly young laying hens.

The junior high boys played basketball last night, their first game without the kid who broke his wrist Wednesday, and they won 55 – 38.  Gabriel had a great game under the boards with rebounds and assists and 6 pts.  and had only 2 fouls.  At the beginning of the season Gabriel set a goal of scoring 100 points this season and he achieved his goal last night.

Bob – I enjoy hearing about your work on the vintage cars; it seems very challenging / rewarding / frustrating / fulfilling at the same time.  I too prefer the old trains to the new ones.

Dennis – Fortunately you just got skinned up.

RT – are you thinking about a slot just for the flange?  Do you have a table saw?  If so I'd use a fine tooth blade to minimize chipping on the finished surface.  What if you did the shelves one at a time taking the trains off a shelf, cutting and replacing it, then moving the trains from the next shelf to the one you just did, then repeating.  Hardest part is getting started.  I tend to "over plan" at times.

Don – I'd say you fixed the layout better and faster than anyone could.  I applaud your skills!

Doug M – Hope you're feeling better.

Prayers for your needs

May God bless

Jim

Just checking in.

The usual overcast sky and 31 degrees. No snow on the ground for several weeks now but Feb. is coming.

The new Lionel catalog is out, nothing I will buy. If retired it takes a hefty pension to buy at their prices.

Hi guys,

25 heading to 28 cloudy again. Ugh  Tongue Tied

Bob, On the International Red Diamond, fill the cylinders with Marvel Mistery Oil and let it sit to free up the pistons. And then when you do get it running pour it down the carb till it almost kills the engine for awhile to clean the rings. It works! is it a 450 6 cylinder?

http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/index.php/site/products/

The only thing I even thought I would like in the Lionel catalog is that CSX intermodal set but agree with SJ on cost.  Surprise

Morning gang.  48 degrees and going to a chilly mid 50's today.  Errands and chili judging at a local church this evening.

Hope all are well [especially you Doug].  Had some sort of bug.  Came home from 5 hour meeting Wed. night with chills, aches and etc.  Stayed home yesterday until 5 PM.  Canceled all meetings [unlike me].  Why I am well today, I'm sure.  Did have Rolesville HS midyear graduation yesterday evening.  Came back home and rested.

KEV is right on the Marvel Mystery Oil.  Used it a lot in past years to free up old tractors and other engines.  You'll have to replace the plugs when you get this done.  In fact, years ago when I was in Homestead FL., the Pontiac dealer there use to do that with every tuneup they did.  Poured Marvel Mystery Oil down carb and it smoked up the town block.  Cleaned and lubed upper cyclinders.

Have a good one.

Have I told you how sorry this software on this site is lately.  Curser just disappeared.  Would not come back so I could type the "Have a good one."  Posted it.  Then went to edit to finish.  Edit just would not load.  Had to leave and then come back.  Did edit to get it in.  That is why I do not post on here like I use to.  Love you guys but this is crap. Afternoon all. I got some bug but believe it's finally leaving me now. but it did a number on me. I was thinking about going to the V.A. when it all started calming down.

Jim I can't get the Drill in there with the screw diver bit to narrow between the shelves. I thought about trying that but to do it I would have to buy a right angle drill and it couldn't be more than 4" I would say wide to give room for it and the screw it was removing. I may have to consider that thou. I built shelves to do that for the both wife had in the vintage mall. so cutting them to size with the table saw is the way to go.

Not much going on around here today. Just trying to relax after this mornings bout. Will talk to you all later.

Flashlights are needed. Wear a hat, too.  Downstream of the tunnel there are some really great places to camp.   So you will be building a canal on the layout.  Have you been to Hancock to see the museum?

Good afternoon all,

Went out to breakfast with my friend Larry this morning and ate enough to choke a horse.  Don't need a lunch.  Ran some trains today for the first time since all the rain we had.  Missing a lot of traction tires since they have rotted out from sitting.  Would use that bull frog snot if it hasn't got solid again. $25 for a very small bottle.  I think you can revive it with a few drops of water.  Will try that first.  My layout has voltage drops galore.  Runs OK in DCS when voltage is high but not good when running in conventional with lower voltages.  Even in DCS, I have oone spot where voltage drops too much even in DCS.  Need better continuity.  It's just a matter of finding the time to chase down all these grimlins.

Don, you did your best in Chicago and then some. I wouldn't go back there for any reason.  You deserve a medal.

Have a good day all.

Ray

Fife, you may know I have been playing with the software program, SCARM the last week.

It is easy to learn and one thing very neat if you are building new is it gives you a parts list.

Here is mine. it is not correct because I did not have to cut so many sections of track because it will bend and tweak, but if you know what you want for a baseboard and fit track to it from the program it would be spot on. Would help not waste money on track you don't need.

Your retired now and have the time! Wink

Hello all

Got up early and went to the 'big city' (Safford,AZ) this afternoon to pick up some groceries and a couple prescriptions.

Kev - Marvel would have been my first choice but we didn't have any on hand. I figured the ATF couldn't hurt and that way it will soak a bit while I'm at work. That's a good idea on running it in the engine to clean the rings. You should see the sludge build up in the pan. Probably from years of using non-detergent oil. Because it has the Rochester 4MV carburator, I believe this engine is the 501". Aerocoach didn't build a ton of buses to begin with, and because this model has the roof windows it is one of only 29 made.

Like Chief said, I remember my boss in the 60s smoking up the place with that stuff. Cleans the rings and valves to.

Good Afternoon from sunny 40°F Southern Ohio,

My bride made steel cut oats in the crock pot for breakfast and they were really good.  I love the steel cut oats but the do take a bit more preparation than quick oats.  The kids are going to an overnight 4-H Winter camp this afternoon.  It should be fun, even if there is no snow to play in.

Kev – The layout is going to have a lot of action.  In rebuilding the front end are you going factory parts or aftermarket?

Dennis – That sounds like a big church.

Banks – We keep a red heat lamp in the coop.  When it gets in the 20's we close the coop to run door.  It has kept the coop above freezing so far.

Bob – do you have any pictures of the bus?

May God bless

My bridges I am geting back show out for delivery at Marseilles so maybe they will come today today. Can never tell with this PO.

28 heading to 30, cloudy, same as everyday lately. Picking up the kids this afternoon to spend the night. Trains will run.

Then tomorrow Katie wants to use the PC to do taxes and Dan and I are going to replace the pitman arm, drag link and tie rod assemblies on the Jeep.

Wow Dennis, 35,000 million ? or is it 35 million? Anyway you look at it a lot of money for a building.

Jim that is the layout and table I have already except the Red elevated loop on the CAD file. That is what I want to add. I just decided to plot what I already have to use it for placing and building the elevated reverse loop above it. Besides it was fun messing with the program.

The bridges got here today but will leave them in the box till the grand-kids leave tomorrow.

The Jeep parts are aftermarket and come from Rockauto and Rough Country. The stuff looks nice and we can take off the old, measure things and build the assemblies and replace then be close to where it needs to be.

We are correcting problems caused from a 4" lift kit and huge tires. Kids!

I have been watching this Stout live auction this afternoon. man are the prices nuts! Surprise

Banks, great news on your wife!!!!
