Evening all!

The tree is gone. Just a pile of sawdust from the stump grinder. Stump did not go far into the ground like a large live oak we had taken out 6 years ago (it was only 6 ft from front of house) so no sprinkler lines or yard drains dug up. Just one sprinkler head broken. Easy to fix.

I had the guy cut me a 4 in slab from the upper trunk so I can make a table if it does not split up while drying out. It is 32 inches in dia and it weighs about 80+ lbs. Nice grain pattern as it is where a twin branch out started so two heartwood rings about 12 in apart. The tree guy who is much stronger than I am tried to carry it himself and then asked for my help. He thinks it weighs over 100 lbs.

Another beaut of a day here. 74 but a huge cold front coming for the weekend. Highs will drop to 64 Laugh

Ray - that is great news about the day care for your wife.

Have a great evening all!

Good evening all,

Incredibly busy today.  Got to take truck to work, which is a good thing.  Both pains were in rare form today.   Rested tonight when I got home.  Had a good walk at noon.  Sunny and no wind.  Three day weekend with doctor's visit on Monday.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 17 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Apparently Buckeye brought with him 2 days of snohizo and an arctic freeze.

What you get for letting that rascal in.!!!!!!

Sunny and cold.  Got a cold again.

Taking crew to the Vet for annual checkup and shots.

Later.

I hope the Vet uses a big needle on you!!!! LOL

I had a great visit with FIFE.  He ran his fantastic layout for me.  The coal dump was great to watch dump the coal into the sink.  Hey Fife, grits versus chocolate and peanut butter buckeyes? please vote your favorite. Laugh

I was south of  Baltimore for an civil engineering materials conference in the eastern shore community of Cambridge, MD.  We talk dirt, cement and blacktop in layman's terms, but engineers call it soil, rock, concrete, aggregate, cement, admixtures and bitumen content.  Specifically we demonstrate non-destructive testing of concrete and asphalt using a Copa Testing instrument.

After five nights on the road, I get home today, so..

Morning all!  Spent several hours yesterday clearing a bunch of train projects off my workbench: a #50 gang car that wasn’t running smoothly, some MPC couplers that kept opening, a rebuild of a #42 switch. Need to order some more parts and then I think I’ll be back to a bare workbench – well, at least one that doesn’t have projects stacked in boxes four or five high!  Found the WSJ article and the reader comments interesting.  Also decided to name our little basement-floor layout the "Illinois Concretus" (Latin for, roughly, concrete), it seemed fitting.  On the job front I have a lead on a project to help a railroad implement PTC, which would be a cool melding of work and pleasure!

Morning all.  27 degrees and chance of Snohio flurries.  Out the door to Charlotte Bass Pro for the weekend.  Taking a faulty Legacy diesel to Lionel for repairs.  They are letting me deliver instead of shipping.  Nice of them.

Hope all have a good one.

Well it is morning.

I saw water on the top of the water heater yesterday and noticed a large icicle hanging off of the vent tube outside. Got me to look closer.  Yeah no kidding a leak.  The last one puked before the 6 year warranty expired. But for a cost extra of $75 you could get the warranty on the replacement to cover 6 years or they would of only covered the replacement till the warranty would of run out from the original heater install date??????    So I bucked up the $75 and replacement R&R of over $350 in 2011.  So I called the plumber and left a message last night about this one leaking. Some woman from the plumber calls at 7:00 sharp and they will be here today sometime?
So I asked if that was the way it would be this time. She said they don't do that anymore so the replacement today's warranty will run out 6 years from when they put in the POS that is leaking back in 2011. Sounds to me like OA Smith knows their heaters are junk.

So todaay's plan,,sit on my hands and wait after I go the the bank and get some cash so I can pick up the grapple thumb I had made for the bucket on the John Deere.

Well have a good one.

Kevin thats how they work those warranties even if they have to replace it, it goes from when you bought it not when they replace it, same with a TV or anything. They are warranting you have the service of this type of equipment for x number of months/years I know doesn't seem right but thats how it is done. now sometimes if you keep all your paperwork the company may replace the original tank but not the installation but you may have to get another plumber to verify it needs to be replaced.

Morning all. not too much in plans today. Going to V.A. Clinic in Aiken to see my pysch DR. ( well Nurse Prationer ) Then to Wal-Mart. Then Home. Hope all have a good TGIF

Good afternoon from overcast and cool 30F Southern Ohio

I'm off for 36 hours before going back in to work.  I'm going to buy that '05 Civic.  It was what I expected.  I spent the morning going over the whole car in the garage and there were no surprises.  Mechanically perfect, scuffs on all four corners and I'll need to get a tire and a alignment, but with only 14,400 miles it should last a long time.  Very basic.  Auto and A/C are the only options.  I'll miss the ride and posh of my '03 Toyota Avalon but it was 24-27 mpg and it has 206,000 miles.  I do not expect these low gas prices to last forever.  I had an '04 Civic just like it and got > 40 mpg all the time.

JT- A clean workbench just crys for the next project.

Roy- That is quite a piece of wood.  Block it up and weight it down and if you can jig it on the four corners it should dry flat and square.  If not a plane can bring it back in.  Buddy of mine just built a table out of a tree he removed to build his house.  Neat idea.  The table is massive and HEAVY

Bob-I'll look on the map for you.  Lots of clear skys there.

Ray-GLad the daycare thing is going to work out for you to get some rest.  It can be a good segue in to more care as needed.

Buckeye- TGIF Drive safe

May God bless

Aloha. Sunny but only 19 going down to 12 or -10 to -15 with the freshening breeze... Ah February. What a tree saga, Roy. That sounds like something that would've been fun to watch on a video. My sailing buddies who live near you can't wait to get out now that the lakes are full again. Jim, you should love that Honda. I ran a Civic for almost 15 years; our CRV is going on 13 and still strong.  Buckeye, we thought of you this week because the youngest and I studied civil engineering t - and mechanical and electrical ... it was Career Week at school and he wants to be an engineer when he 'grows up' so had to make posters...  Bob, the youngest also studied astronomical engineers - if I am calling it correctly -- by making a poster showing the Mt. Graham observatories!

The bride and I will celebrate Valentines Day early with dinner tonight instead of on Sunday... She had the day off today so rearranged all the books on all the shelves in the house. Sigh...

Good afternoon,

New water heater is installed and running. Don't know what it is going to cost because I have not got the bill yet. They replaced the AO Smith with a Bradford White brand. I find that strange because the AO Smith was under warranty??? I have never heard of Bradford White. It is what it is.. Oh well it is fixed and working.  Surprise I still don't get how they can change brands on a warranty job. Better not send me a bill for the heater or I will pop.

Neat link Doug to Bob's place of work.

Dennis V8,

These are for you. I took these today. Wife calls them the Magnificent Seven. They were right on time at 4:05PM They are about 30’ from the front door. They know it is going to get down to about 0 tonight.

Good evening all,

Busy day at work.   Glad for a 3 day weekend.  Did the flowers and card thing for wife tonight because it will be dang cold this weekend.   May not venture out at all except for Mass and a 7 mile walk on Sunday.   The only "footie" I can watch is 7 AM on Sunday on Telemundo.  May have to drag myself out of bed for that.  Interesting article in another thread from the WSJ.   I got to thinking about Lionel's new culvert unloader and loader listing for $600 in the new catalog and wondering why people question what is causing the decline in railroading interest.  I hope everyone stays warm and safe and has a good day.

Hello all

Another nice warm day here on the mountain (it's 42 deg).

Kev - oh, deer!

V8 - I saw a new civic at a supermarket a few days back and was surprised by how big it was. I see a Nissan Titan or Frontier and find it hard to believe they once made my Datsun.

Working on a couple of modelling projects in my spare time. I need to look into getting some better brushes. My detailing skills are better than my brushes are capable of.

Gave up on the decals for my friends Stratocruiser model. Second set from the bay were just as bad as the first. May try and make a simple logo w/ the labelmaker. He originally wanted it to sit on the shelf next to a couple of similar models, so I guess it should still look fine.

Evening all from cold 20F Southern Ohio,

Sunny day, but very cold. Spent a lot of time inside cleaning up the house with the kids. Started cleaning out the Avalon to sell. It will make someone a good car.

Started night shift a couple days early so after Mass dropped the two girls off at Youth group party and came to work. Have two services in the morning, so it will be a long day!

Mike-The price of the new train equipment keeps me going to the "vintage" American Flyer and Marx trains and accesories.

Buckeye & RT-The grandkids are the reward for haveing kids. My bride and I have the blessing of having our grandkids 24/7.

Dennis-The Hondas do seem to keep getting bigger. I remember when my bride was in nursing school in 1977 one of her friends had a Civic and she called it Wart. I could hardly fit in it. The 05 is much bigger, but still smaller than the '16 Civic. I'm 6'2" and 195, so I need a car with a little leg and head room.

Doug-Thanks for the link to Mt Graham observatory

Bob-That really seems like a neat job. And to see that beautiful sceanary and sky, wow, you are blessed!

Good night and may God bless

Jim

Good evening all,

Cold in Indiana.  Did some more work on my N&W engine.  Finally got the motor separated from the frame and tested it.  Even with no load, it tripped the circuit breaker on the transformer at low speed.   Found out the frame and motor from an old Southern Streak engine will swap out for the N&W even there is about 20 years between them.  Only bought the Southern Streak set to get some "Cheap Classics" that came with it.  Motor is hardly used.   Watched Julie and Julia with wife tonight after helping her clean house today.   Submmbob, your comment about Datsun brought back memories of when they made good pieces of equipment.  Unfortunately the days of the 240Z and the 510 are long gone. Stur-fish, your comments are spot on.  When I can buy early MPC boxcars for $15 brand new in the box, why spend $60 to $75 for new stuff.  Menards may be on to something.  I think it is a matter of when, not if, they will make entire sets.  It will be more than interesting to see what their price points would be.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Morning from cold Charlotte/Concord, NC.  Store work has been boring.  Strange.  The nerve thingy in my hip has not acted up the whole trip.  That is good.  Go to the store for a few hours and then hit the road.

Dennis, you are right about the Honda thingy.  Use to own an Accord when they first came to the USA.  Little thing.  Civic was tiny.  Wifey has a CRV and hers is a lot larger than the older ones.  She said the latest ones are even larger.

Hope all have a happy Valentines Day.

Buckeye, you will find it gets old after a while.  Hotels, restaurants, airplanes and airports all get to be the same.

Later.

Aloha. The sun is gone and here comes the snow - sending it on to points east. You're first, SJ. Still in the single digits too. Brrrrr. Dennis, it is fun to compare my MiL's 2014 Honda CRV with my 2003. Her's is gigantic and very nicely appointed. Mine is a tiny, basic 4WD 'goat' that can still drive through anything. Looks like this will be a quiet day. MikeC, I just got back from Menards - their O gauge stuff is really nice and priced well. I saw three-rail track, all sorts of layout items, a few sets and lots of interesting rolling stock, including their very inexpensive flat cars. Happy Valentine's Day!

Afternoon all!

All Valentines Day stuff in place. Flowers, cards, and kids coming to dinner. The wife is pleased I think.

Doing repairs today. Was digging to fix and move a broken lawn sprinkler head and "lo and behold" I cut the fiber optic line to my house. It was only 1 inch below the grass. Supposed to be over 16 inches down and have a "tracer" (i.e. yellow tape) before you get to the actual line. Oh well - no house phones and no fiber TV. They are coming tomorrow by 8 pm to fix it (run  a new line). We have internet via cable/Time Warner so internet is no issue. However - I stopped digging until I can call TW to locate their line in case it is in a stupid place also. Can get the ATT guy to locate my neighbors fiber as now I suspect it is just below surface and unmarked also.

50's here and cloudy. Warming up next week.

Regards, Roy

Good evening all,

Good news.  Mini Marathon is giving miniature Borg Warner trophies as part of the bling for finishing this year.  More good news.  Did 7 miles today.  Bad news is that I was only 2 minutes ahead of minimum pace.   Really hope doctor can fix me Tuesday.   Was totally wiped out after today's practice.   Got enough snow today.  Ugh.  Glad I am not going to the office tomorrow.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Mornin' boys.  Snohizo here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Man has it been polar.  Even worse in the mountains of WV.  Did some house-hunting, visited with my folks, and wound up bringing my toddler nephew back to Baltimore.  All together, the weekend was kinda a big bust.  Either way, gotta get fifedom ready for market.

Cold 27 and damp to the bone. Got to get out there and clear the lane from all the drifting last night. Wife has the day off so will just hang out. Maybe move the bucket into the shed and start looking at the grapple assembly needs.

Here is a shot or two of the Grapple I will be putting on the John Deere bucket.

Here it is. Painted, assembled, and mocked up to height of top of bucket so I can see what I need to do to get it to close where I want it.

Best get going.

Messy good morning.  Sleet and freezing rain.  Highways are the problem.  Ground been frozen for several days.  Suppose to get warmer during the day and tonight.

Trip to Charlotte Bass Pro Shops [Friday thru Sunday] was OK but nothing special.  Crowd was down.  Got paid anyway.

Hope all are doing OK.

PS: Kevin, what you going to do with that big thing?  Break up ice, ground or pull trees????  That is a rough and tuff looking thing.

Chief it will be used to save my back. All of the ash trees are dead or about to be because of that bug. I will have a lot of wood and brush to move to the burn pile this year. I did not think I could afford a whole grapple at like $1,500.00 for the use it would get so I am installing this to the top of the bucket and it will be used like in this video.

Checking in for Monday.

We went out for steak and lobster yesterday for Valentine's day.  It was very good.

Wife has been complaining of pain at the surgery site where they removed Squamish cell carcenoma resently.  It appears to be all healed up so maybe it's internal.  Called surgeon today to discover he is on vacation for another week.  Will call primary doctor for his advice.  I am worried that it might be a blood clot or something gone wrong in the healing process.

Only day this week today with no appointments.  She sees her oncologist tomorrow for yearly visit following some test.

We put in an appearance at the TTOS Southwestern meet on Sunday.  It was open to the public and there were lots of sellers.  Did not stay long because wife get's tired of it fast.  We just went for the ride mainly and to eyeball the Gold Line light rail for test trains.  There were none on Sunday but saw a lot of them last week.  Line opens from Azusa to L.A. starting March 5th.

Our sometimes live in son is making himself scarce lately.  Spending a lot of time with his fiancee.  Oldest son came for a visit yesterday and went out to eat with us.

later,

Ray
