Good evening all,

Work was busy today.  Gave "my" soccer girls some bling for a winning season.  I think they liked it.  Shared some moments with the seniors.  Will really miss this bunch.  Mowed the yard.  Unclogged gutters on barn.  Watched Arrow.  Was hoping Oliver and Felicity would get together.  Not going to happen.  Got ready for tomorrow's game.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

I thought of that too, Kev.  It's not much of an inconvenience to do it that way.  I'm beginning to wonder if both engines weren't supposed to have coil couplers originally...read on

In actuality, both front and rear units are powered yet both engines are controlled by one TMCC receiver in the front unit.  The tether even transmits power to the rear motors.  It's now becoming obvious to me, from the removal of center rail power wires to the rollers in the rear unit, that this set has been hacked at sometime in it's past.  Switching things around to my satisfaction shouldn't cause any concern that I'm detracting from originality.

I plan to rewire the tether for reliability and maybe tap the power off the rear trucks to improve continuity over switches and such, although it's getting consistant power as is.  This'll definitely be a Frankendeisel when I'm done with her.

Sunny and low 70's today. Haven't been around for a while. I got an ear infection around Labor day, then picked up a cough a couple of weeks later. After a couple rounds of antibiotics, I'm just this week starting to feel better. Work was busy as well on top of not feeling well. Got home and just zoned out. On a high point, we got up to Michigan to celebrate mom's 90th birthday. It is the first time in several years both of our sons have been with us. Pleasant time. Got a cute picture of mom in her wheelchair with a fork working on one corner of the full sheet cake we had. Gonna take a while to catch up on the pot. Looking into next year, I am going to be setting up 5 or 6 temporary layouts at a couple of locations next year. I need to find something better than cardboard boxes to transport my trains. I know some of you folks frequently carry trains to other locations to run them. What do you use to transport them? I noticed that Lionel rolling stock seems to come in several 'standard' sizes. I'm thinking about making trays with appropriate 'standard' dividers to carry my trains. The tool bar is gone again. Looks like I'll have to find the proper parameter and re-set it again. All for now.

Sorry guys...maybe I'm not making myself clear enough.

Yes, there are 2 dummy couplers on the rear of both units and I understand that the units are normally run back to back with those couplers joined.

It's the other couplers position that are confusing.  Why put the coil coupler up front and the manually opening coupler out back?  Maybe because the rear coupler can be opened during conventional running whereas the coil coupler can only be opened using TMCC?  I think the existing configuration on this set takes into consideration that not everyone operates under TMCC.

Bruce

Bruce, not sure but maybe they want the dummy run in front of the power unit. Does that make sense?

Not much to report here. I did run the trains for about 1/2 hour last night to clean the track of dust. Wink

Chief, don't know what made me think he was younger. At 38 he can do anything he wants.

That's what SJ is saying Lionel did that because the were suppose to be run AA one forward and one back wards back ends connected to each other so you had couplers at each end and you could run them either way to me it was always a pain to connect them also. now they do not make a eltro coupler that small but Boxcar Bill has some close I'm not sure where he gets them but ERR are all either 1 3/4" or 2" long I think boxcar Bill has like 1 1/4" .

Just taking it easy to day stopping in to say Hi to all. About time to go get some supper made last I ate was like 11 am I think something like that lol

Wish I was going with you all to York just don't see it maybe a few years down the road but not any time soon.

sir james I

Lionel and others put dummy couplers on the rear of their F units because it was intended that they run as AA or ABA that would leave a working coupler on both ends.

S.J.

That's also the way they're configured on this pair of K-Line F7 A units, SJ, but the dummies are not the issue.  The problem is that there is a coil coupler on the front of the lead unit and a manual coupler, not a dummy,  on the cab end of the rear A unit.

I realize I could always run the team backwards to place the remote coupler where it's most needed but I thought of just changing out the operating couplers front to rear.  About the only remaining minor issue then would be having to press the front uncoupler button to operate the rear.

Buckeye - Stoney Creek has good food, Mike's Crab House has good food and scenery.  Bamboo Bernie's has the best burger.   I wouldn't recommend Roy wondering around Mt Royal (or Baltimore City) on his own. He is toooo, ummm-Texan.

My new YORK eat-em-ups is Arooga's (look 'em up).

RT,

I think I'll investigate how difficult it is to move the coil coupler to the rear.  I'll do it in conjunction with reworking the tether.  Shouldn't be too difficult.  Ideally, I'll modify the front pilot to look prototypically correct and add a scale coupler.

I'm really stoked about doing some conversions on a few of my non TMCC fleet.  I got you in mind as soon as I decide which engine to try first.

BTW, I spent an hour looking at the photos on your webpage again.  Absolutely fantastic collection!

Rail Plate ( Bruce) If you check you will find for some reason a lot especially post war F-units had fake couplers on the rear and operating on the front I have no idea why but that's how they where. My NYC back to classics are that way.

Good evening all,

I agree with the slow 30 miles from York to Gettysburg.   Unless Us 30 is a true 4 lane now, all it was when I drove on it was 3 lanes with the middle one a turn lane and NO passing opportunities.  UGH!   Watched the end of the season for the soccer boys as a valiant effort went down to a 3-0 defeat.  Work was quiet today was some glitches, but overall it was ok.  At least the weather cooperated for the game tonight.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Thanks Buckeye for the references.

Communicated this evening with JEFElectric and he will be there next week including breakfast at RoC.

Buckeye - Round the Clock diner is just about an eighth of a mile east of the I83/hwy 30 intersection on the north side of 30. Couldn't recall if you have been there previously.

Chief,

You don't need to go to Gettysburg.  Here's what happened.

Pickett charged across an open field firing and cussing as he went.  A Yankee from Cadiz, Ohio woke up and fired back with bigger guns.  Pickett turned around.  George Armstrong Custer went back to sleep. The end.

Roy,

My favorite place in Baltimer for super, unless fife is going to feed you free, is Stony Creek Inn near the bridge across the bay.  BTW, if you have never seen the train shed at Mt. Royal Station it is worth a peek.  Nothing like it, as far as I know west of the Allegheny Mtn. Very European.

Evening gents!

Spent the day obsessing over the pair of F7's and pretty much sorted it all out.  Relearning how to operate with TMCC helped a lot.  About all that's left is to sort out the tether, which intermittently disrupts power to the rear unit lighting.

I continued with some more detailing.  Here's the front unit with wipers and wind vents added.

?tn=1504812379

Note that the coil coupler is on the front unit whereas the rear units coupler is manual.  You would think the logical position for the coil coupler would be on the rear.  I could have cared less about one up front...a dummy scale coupler would suffice.

Evening all!

Chief the 30 miles from Gettysburg to York is a slow 30 miles. Not sure it would be worth the effort. It is a pretty drive.

York closes at 2 pm Sat and most folks head home.

I depart Sun morning from Baltimore and will be moving to Hotel close to BWI Sat evening.

if some folks are interested in Sat early evening dinner we can head to Baltimore afterwards.

Have a great evening all!

Forgot that.  Maybe Friday night if we get there early enough.  You have my cell [as others do too].  Call me when you know where everyone is eating and I can tell you then if I can make it.  Wifey says she would love to meet the gang.

Shake and Bake, show Chris this.  He is single like Frankie.  This is Frankie's "toy" vehicle.  Stays in his garage except certain show days or meet days.  Maybe Chris wants one of these.  Chick magnet.

600HP

The other night, I asked him why 600HP.  He just laughed. Confused

Chief, if you go to Gettysburg and you have the chance, view the movie before you go. Went there my first York in '96 and in April of this year. A majestic place. There is also a great micro-brew pub at Seminary Ridge with a very good menu.

Thanks Bob.  Been there a couple of times and never knew it.
