Brent - Congrats and safe travels!

SPRay - sorry to hear about your friend. Sounds like a great guy. Take care of the back.

DJ - burro crane! Cool! How 'bout a video?

Got to finish up a painting project and a few other things and then head back home later in the afternoon.

Doug Murphy, John, et al, thank you for the condolences for my friend Bill Sellers.  Bill had a nice full life and made it to 89.  His son said he invisioned him now off watching trains go by somewhere.  Bill was the station agent/operator for the Southern Railway Company at Gainesville, Ga. for the bulk of his railroad career.  However he did do some firing on the ACL and had experience on the steam engine 4-8-4 R-1 class. in the late thirties or early 40's  I think.  He was one of the nicest guys I never met.  I'll explain that.  Although we never met face to face, we met and corresponded via the internet.  People who knew him better say he was one of the best people you could know.   Seems like a lot of the old steam era railroaders were like that.  Toward the end of his life Bill was nearly blind and deaf but still gave life a good battle right to the end.  I was very reluctant to mention any of my own physical compaints to him.  He put me to shame.  I notified a couple of railroad book authors that Bill knew and they said they would pass the word along to people who knew him.

I'm doing better with the back pain and just taking Aleve at the moment.  Will try to get appointment with the doctor today for follow up.

TTOS Southwestern had their annual picnic at the L.A. Live Steamers this week end but I missed it because of my problems

I will run my Southern Railway PS4 steam engine today and blow the whistle for Bill.

Have a good week, Ray

Good morning all,

My father, sister, and niece arrived late Saturday night due to their flight being delayed.  We had a pleasant Sunday: church, lunch, naps, and then watching baseball.  Unfortunately, Mo blew the save last night and the Sox won in extra innings.  I ran six miles this morning while pushing the 1y/o in the jogging stroller.  I was able to finish the run in under an hour which is not too bad considering the wind and stroller add some resistance.  I plan to only work a half-day today since the family is in town.

Brent - Your daughter is adorable.

Good day,

Joe

Good Morning,

Humid 78% going into the 90's. it rained on and off yesterday.

Won a postwar tinplate observation car to go with one of the 221's along with a postwar tinplate crane. Paid opening bid on both. AF53 did good also.

SpMan, Ray, Sorry to hear about your friend Bill.

Brent, That is a cute baby. Enjoy.

V8 Vega, Dennis ask AF53 about waiting for the last seconds to bid.

DJSpanky, I could go for a Philles vs the Yanks for a World Series. The guys at work in the Southern locations are Philly fans and the North are Yankee fans. Almost as good as football season.  Whistling I wonder who stirs the pot. Big Smile

Thoughts and Prayers for all in need.

Aloha, Pretty day today. Stormed on and off yesterday. Ended up taking the youngest to the beach instead of fair. He loved it. Hope to hike up to American Girl store to get something for a newly arrived China adoptee from our friends. They were fortunate to get her just in time before she was 'graduated' onto the streets from her orphanage for reaching her 14th bday. Haven't been there in a while.

Ray, that's sad news about Bill

Hi GUYZ,

Got washed out on Saturday on the wall.  Now gotta do last 20 feet of stone this morning.  Took a big bite out of it yesterday about 100 sq ft then got tired at 7pm.  Had a pitza and stromboli with Ol Mils and watched drag racing.  Slept great.

Ran a 3 miler this morning.

Stay frosty,

Hot and humid in Saint Louis today.  Went to church and then to lunch at Chilis.  Something had msg in it, because I got a sick headache, which is a sure sign.  Checked BP and it was 138/94.  Drank a lot of water.  My son and I did replace the supply tube mechanism in a toilet in the master bathroom.  Otherwise, I just took it easy today.  I need to get the back yard mowed soon - will have to do it in sections each night after work, I guess.  I can do the front and sides in about 20 minutes on the rider, but the back still takes a push (self-propelled).  TARDIS is ready and we have banilla or, if you like, banilla Laugh

Good Evening, Guys!

Brent, Congas again...and if you need to find some places to eat in Jacksonville....

Had a quick thunderstorm literally blew through the area in about 10 minutes with no effect.

Not much happened today, but my sleep in was disturbed by a fire call at 10AM...due to burnt toast.

Just saw Pedroia get thrown out by Russel Martin....

Angel for us all.

Have a good night, will check back tomorrow.

Good afternoon all,

V8 Vega, took me a while to figure out Banilla and Tardis also.  Even when told, I was not of the generation that followed Dr. Who so was still in the dark for a while.

I had a good night last night with the back pain.  Slept straight through without waking up with pain.  Took last pain pill at 6:00PM yesterday.  I have only been taking Aleve today.  Went to church and felt OK but then felt a little strained staying on my feet too long afterward.  Home now and feeling better.

I had some sad news today.  I got an E mail that my internet friend, Bill Sellers, who has been in the hospital since a heart attack, has passed away yesterday.  His son Bruce sent me an E Mail.  I sent a few E mails myself to people who would know him.  Bill was listed on the Norfolk and Southern Railway Company Historical Society website as the steam editor.  He was listed as W.A. Sellers.  Bill and I had corresponded on the internet for over two years even though we never met face to face.  We shared some stories about the original Norfolk and Southern Railway during WWII.  Bill was the author of several articles in different railway historical society publications in the South and has photo credits in several books.  He was a fireman on a steam engine back in the late thirties for the Atlantic Coast Line and later on became a train order operator and telegrapher where he spent most of his career on the Southern Railway.  Bill's present home was in Gainesville, Ga.  He is survived by at least one son that I know and his wife.  One can see some his photos by googling on   Bill Seller's railroad history.  He inspired me to write an article myself for the ACLHS magazine, Lines South.  He may be gone but I will never forget him.

To ride along Lake Superior from Duluth through Canada and into Sault St. Marie, MI is like no other trip I've been on.  Lots of tragic shipping accidents on that Lake, quite the history.

I was at Whitefish Point a couple weeks ago. This is where the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in 1975.  The subject of the famous Gordon Lightfoot song.

Good Morning,

Rain on and off this morning. A good day to relax and run the trains. I have 2 items that I bid on ebay that go off today. Let's see what happens.

SPMan, Get Well soon. You have a Triple Whammy.

V8 Vega, Dennis, Congrats on your wins. Now you know about the Tardis and Banilla.

SJ, Still no Lemon Ice Cream. I keep on them to make it.

Demay, I agree with you on the use of pain killers. I am the same way. The honey-do's can be a killer. Enjoy the family visit.

Dennis, You are right, it is time to clean house in DC. The Pres. was right. Change is coming and it will be different.

Chief, No matter how many times I watch I Love Lucy, I find a one liner or a stunt that I missed before.

Jon, The Twins pound the Yanks?? BTW, I went to HS with an ex manager of the Twins, Tom Kelly.

Prayers and Thoughts to all in need.

Good morning

73 and humid.

Take the word Banilla as spoken by my then 3 year old grandson and you translate it into vanilla ice cream. The UP of Mich. and lake Superior shoreline is beautiful in the summer. It is very easy to spend a week or more in the quiet of the north country. Missed the chat last night, to much food and happy birthday cake and ice cream. Me thinks today will be a quiet one..S.J.

Doug  -- glad to hear that you made it to the museum and had some train time with the gang, that had to make your heart sing!  Grand Lake, Granby, Shadow Mtn. haven't changed much in the last 40 years except for a few more high dollar McMansions, the towns are essentially the same.  Sharyl's sister and husband have a home on Lake Granby and we have spent a great deal of quality time there the last 39 years, super view.  Sadly, the Pine Beetle has devastated that entire region, we now look across the lake and the scene is thousands of acres of dead lodge pole pine, unbelievable.  Once lightning hits that area and the fires start it will be an epic disaster.  Most of my Sept. trip will be out of Montrose, CO -- I hope to hit Utah and Arizona also, need to color those states in on my map!

8ntruck -- there is a small restaurant in Two Harbors, MN that I first sampled home made Pasties, I will not ride through that town without stopping for lunch/dinner now.  It's called the Vanilla Bean, on main street and it's just fantastic. There's also a steam engine trip out of Two Harbors, hope to make that this year.   I read somewhere that the Lake Superior Circle Tour (I think it was National Geographic) is one of the best 7 trips in the USA and I believe it, this will be 5th tour and I can't wait.  To ride along Lake Superior from Duluth through Canada and into Sault St. Marie, MI is like no other trip I've been on.  Lots of tragic shipping accidents on that Lake, quite the history.

V8Vega

What is Banilla and Tardis?

Dennis  San Fernando Valley CA.

I asked the same question about banilla and Brutus provided the answer. As for the Tardis, although it is his chosen mode of transport, it is a very English device used by Dr Who to take him on his journeys through space and time. Like a Pekinese dog it is bigger inside than the outside (have you ever seen one of these things do a$1****$2--WOW!!!)                                                                                                                                                                           The real thing was a royal blue painted wooden British police reporting centre about five feet square by eight foot high with a blue light atop used to summon officer(s) to a telephone connected to the local nick. To the left of the door was a cupboard containing an emergency telephone for public use, again connected to the nick. these were scattered about our towns and citys during the 1950s and 60s before portable radios, mobile (cell) phones and cars took away the ability to walk. Near to where I live now, they built a brick Tardis because the locals burned the wooden one down. This used to be one hell of a rough area.

Jim,

To deal with condensation a standard bathroom without an opening window requires a two speed extract fan connected to the outside, it must comply with even your building regulations with regard to siting, duty and controls.                                                                                                                                            Perhaps 'The Chief' can enlighten you furtherWhistling.

Hot out today and rain in Saint Louis.  My son and I finished the drywall on that one wall as well as another little project.  We have to do the shower next.  I'm looking into anti-mold ceiling tiles for a drop ceiling.  Otherwise, I'll have to drop the ceiling with some 2x4s I guess and drywall that as well.  Hate having to rethink stuff right at the end like this, lol!  But, just for the bathroom.  Doug - I hate plumbing!  My Grandad was a plumber and that was in the old days with all that cast iron and stuff.

DougDG - doc recommended getting low salt spaghetti sauce and mixing with regular tomato sauce, which doesn't have salt in it?  I've yet to try that, but we don't have spaghetti too often.

TARDIS ready, banilla on board, ready to go.  I see some beacons coming on on the big scope, so let's get going!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Low 90's and humid.  Had a little rain over the last couple of days.

Jonadel - very pretty country where you are planning on taking your yearly ride.  I'm jealous.  Be sure you stop and eat some pasties while you are in that part of the world.  Any particular places that you are planning on visiting?

Still crazy at work.  I've logged about 80 hours since Saturday morning a week ago.  Played hookie from work yesterday afternoon.  My wife and I went to the 'big city' for a movie and dinner.  A little bit of downtime like that from time to time helps clear my mind.

We watched 'Unstoppable" tonight.  Not a bad movie.  I question some of the technical feats, though - throwing switches with enough precision to shuttle two locomotives onto a siding, while still letting the runaway train to continue on the main line.  Isn't air perssure needed to release the breaks on freight cars?  If that is true, the whole premise of the movie is kind of shot.

All for now.

Evenin' All.

Ray, Back aches/pain can be misery, seems like one just cannot find a comfortable position.

Jon, One of these days the better half and I will have to make a trip back to the Rockies. Be interesting to see what the Grand/Shadow Mountain/Granby Lakes have become in the 40yrs(?) since we lived there. Wonder if the old Fall River Rd from Estes Park is still open ? It was an old one-way gravel road from when Rocky Mountain National Park was first opened. A gorgeous ride but ruff.

The better half went with me to the museum yesterday, I packed a nice lunch and some drinks for the two of us since the regular lunch faire is off my list. Started setting my toys up a little after ten and was really having fun with the other club members and our guests. Long about two o'clock I pretty much hit the wall and had to pack-up and head home, fell asleep as soon as I sat on the couch.

Jim, Found a bunch of "no added salt" stuff at the grocery. Going to experiment with using them to make a pot of Chili. Chef
