On a more pleasant topic.  If you are at Rocky Gap, hop over the mountain and do a little railfanning in Cumberland, or head down to Orleans crossroads.  Hope you have nice weather.

Surely will .... hope to get alot of railroad pics .... we're trying to plan to get down to Paw Paw and Oldtown area too . I'm taking 2 small memory cards .... ordered a 16 gig but it did'nt arrive in time . i'll just dump the pics on the laptop . Hopefully I can get pics of every bridge in cumberland ... if I don't get ran over or  hit stopping on that overpass to take them .... lol .  Black Eye I'll smunch down a coney island hot dog for you ....

Dennis .... that's a great idea they have at that school on those tickets ... would be wonderful if all schools had that program ! Lord knows most kids today think money grows on trees ... as the old saying goes . I used to ask for a " WHOLE DOLLAR " .... hopeing dad would give me one .... now they want no less than a $20.00 bill or two and think that's nothing .

Good Afternoon everyone!  Got a surprise upon coming home today.  A wonderful example of the thoughtfulness of the folks here.  Thanks!

Got a big case in the morning, but today I'm done.  I will be taking the wife and kids to Hobby Lobby to see what fun things they have with the trains....actually, we are also going to buy some gifts for the kids in my son's class.  Every Friday, they have a chance to hand in tickets they have earned over the course of the week to buy things.  They can get toys and other items that make them feel as though they are "earning" them.

Hope everyone has a great day.
Dennis

Good morning all, the big event here can be summed up in one word. Rain!  It's a real novelty here in Southern California and we need it bad.  Just hope the folks in the burned areas don't get wiped out by mud slides.  You can't win here.  Not much planned today except pick up grandson from school and forward him to church after snack for Christmas play rehersal.  This is one of my days for taking dieuretics.  Hope it wears off before I have to do all that running around this afternoon.  Could be interesting or maybe I need to take a relief tube. LOL.

Mornin All.

Fife, Think they learned their monetary control concepts from our idiots here in Californey. Our "governmental leaders" are more concerned with banning large screen TV's and paint colors on cars & roofs than the lack of jobs and our failing economy. SoapBox Banged Head Angry End of rant.

Rain has arrived ! Sure glad I don't have to get out on the roadways, traffic is a mess. Guess the worst of it is still offshore and coming in later this morning. Gale force winds, cold, and lots of rain. With all the cooking on today's "Honey-do List" I hope her Bunco group doesn't cancel tonight, we'll be eating B-B-Q for a month.

Time to head back to the kitchen.

Later all.

Sorry for the extremely late reply fifey .... it's GOLD BOND ..... they make ice cream for bucu companies .... it's in Hagerstown , Maryland .  klondike bars ... popscicles .... nutty buddy .... which most folks don't know that those individual companies and more ... too many to list .... alot of huge companies don't make and ship their own products . And there goes all my free ice cream he used to bring me !!!! Believe it or not they shipped laundry detergents and all kinds of products through there ..., name brand stuff . ... because the main company that owns this one also owns many other diversified companies . Yea we used to get all those products for little to nothing by the case if wanted ... or individually and that's gone .  Banged Head  I don't get to read the pot too often lately ... extremely busy until after Xmas . Have a paid company trip to Rocky Gap lodge tues. - friday ... wife's employer's expense .... Smile,Wink, & Grin  .... will take the laptop and chat here and on the tardis a good bit then .... when I'm not playing with that new SLR camera .

Up early as neighbor's daughter took her car back [they ahd been using since Grady lost their vehicle].  Took their kids to neighboring town to school.  Now trying to help them get a vehicle so they can get to work and kids to school.  Do not know what they would do if I did not look after them.  Got to loan them the $$$ until Thursday.

Aloha all. Sir J! I hope you are feeling better or asking your doc about your feeling of malaise. Hope to check in later. A bit of snow overnight. Supposed to be more this week - a few storms coming our way.  I go back to the office tomorrow and Wed. But I've been working even on these days off. The curse of the computer I guess. 8nt, hang in there. Bob, glad you're taking care of yourself. Mike, hope you feel better too. Off to the dentist with the bride in a few (her visit thankfully, not mine).

Good morning all,

It is cloudy with a dusting of Snohio on the ground.  Staying home today to rest up.  Did get some sleep last night.  I had sausages and waffles on the dining car for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  Sorry again, but no beacon tonight either.  The "saucy wench" and I did appreciate the medical drop, but you did not have to drag Dennis W. all the way from Georgia to check on us.  The doctor has enough really sick people to take care of as it is.  Of course with the "way back" feature, it may not have taken that much time any way.  Thanks again, guys.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mornin' boys.  It's cold.

Still on night work.  We have a holiday deployment, and my particular area has a magnificent train garden at the VFD. Approve

Chief - No raises for us locals.  Matter of fact, surrounding jurisdictions have been taking concessions.

We are closed for weather at this point. May open up later if the humidity drops, but we wil have to wait and see. Eating is still a bit of a challenge, but I'm getting better. At least I've slept fairly well the last couple days.

RT and Mike - sounds like the stuff is going around. Take care and hope you feel better.

SJ - trying to pass baby sea urchins is no  fun. I've tried that twice so far. My dad didn't finish pilot training because he developed them while he was there (I guess they have a bad habit of trying to come out at high g's). Rest up and take it easy. I think cranberry juice might work better than the grits on the 2 left...

Think I finally figured out the problem w/ the windbird we have been chasing. The fiber optic cable appears to be bad. The relay works fine on the bench w/ the spare windbird electronics. Temperatures changes and expansion/contraction of the cable may well explain the intermittant problem. It lives on the Vatican telescope which doesn't move like ours so it involves a slow walk and then warming up the toes on my right foot:) Cable wont be fun to replace, but at least we know what it is.

Spent part of last night disassembling the 258 and getting it ready to send it to my cousin for her daughters. Needed a good cleaning and I'm replacing all the motor wires. I haven't seen the inside of it for over 20 years and it's been interesting comparing it to the postwar stuff I've recently been working on. They are rather different animals. One of the brushes was made up of tightly wrapped wire. Looked like a factory made part. Anybody seen any of these?

Good evening all,  went to train meet today but it was kind of quiet.  Probably people are burned out from Cal Stewart last month.  There were things to buy but nothing I needed or wanted.  Saw an old Lionel red beacon tower.  The one that works from vibrating and it was offered for $15.  It was like new!  I remember paying 50 bucks for one of those a few years ago.  Must be the economy or something.

Chief, glad you survived the parade.

Dennis, I have had so many kidney stones in the past 20 years or so I can't count them.  Fortunately, all of them were small enough to pass but with a lot of pain.  I think they gave me demerol the first time.  That is powerful stuff and really knocks you out.  The last few I've had were passed without any medication and some without any pain at all.  I only had to go to the hospital with a few of them.  The first time I had one was the worst because I didn't know what it was and that freightens you which probably makes the pain worse.  I felt like I had to get  a little bit better just  to die.  Since then, they still hurt but they don't scare you as much.

Laz, sorry you didn't see a deer after all that work.  They must have left the state.

Rain predicted for tonight and tomorrow.  We have battened down all the hatches and are waiting for it to begin.  They say we might get a couple of feet of snow in the mountains too.

Good night y'all

Ray

Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

Brutus - that's OK.  February probably is better.

I forgot to mention that when we were shopping at K-Mart today, I saw a Thomas the Tank Engine story book in the kid's department with the title Thomas and the Jet Engine.  The cover illustration showed Thomas pulling a flat car carrying a jet engine.

Just think of the possibilities here - Estes 'D' series rocket motors, Jetex engines, maybe even an old Dynajet........   Keeping it on the track and not making a scale forest fire would be the chalange!

Which one of you adventerous Thomas fans out there will have something ready for next week's SPF?

Good evening guys - wow, just got caught up on the coffee pot.  Sir James!!!  So sorry to hear you were sick, you should have called or emailed me on my cell phone!

Prayers for all for cancer, stones, and everything else that is going on Sad

Drove the family to Harrisonville, near Kansas City Friday night.  Got up Saturday and had relatives over to the in-law's house all day, did Christmas with them.   It's their tradition because father-in-law worked for UPS and sister-in-law and her husband work for Fedex.  Stayed up late visiting with folks, then got up for a big biscuits and gravy breakfast and hit the road back to St. Louis about 10:30.

Sorry 8nT - we thought about you, but just knew we couldn't fit in a visit and sounds like it would have been a bad timing anyway Sad  I do hope to catch you in February though!

Laz, we won't forget you tonight.  Already made plans with RT and we are going to come get you first.  Maybe drop off some medicine for Mike and his wife!  See the rest on the beacon already, so time to get moving!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening everyone.  Well, had some biscuits and gravy today during Sunday School....(hey, we're Baptists, ya have to have food at Sunday School!)  Anyway, the gravy was made with a cream of mushroom soup.  Only problem is that I am allergic to Mushrooms.  So RT, I felt your pain this morning!  Didn't feel good all day after that and I missed evening church.

Sir James, They probably gave you Fentanyl or one of its derivatives.  Very good stuff.  Sufenta is the same, but 10x more powerful.  Either way, you have to be careful.  The other one that is used is Demerol.  I have had some people I have worked with get hooked on them and they can be very dangerous.  That is one reason they are kept under tight security.

Laz, we are over-run by deer here.  With all the farms around and the mild winters, it keeps them well fed.  Our limit is 10 per year.  Our season goes from September to January and you can hunt with everything from a cross bow to a high power rifle.  In our immediate area, a good size doe runs about 130-160lbs.

8n, my heart goes out to you man.  Having lost my mom about a month ago, it seems so surreal.  Over time, I am sure it will get easier, but for now, I have constant reminders and things that make me want to just pick up the phone and tell her something.  Such things as my son got "Student of the Month" at his school.  She would be very happy to hear that, but I stop and it comes back to me.  I will pray for peace and comfort to you and your family.

Picked up several trains magazines at Books A Million this past week.  As I get through them, I see so many train related adventures I hope to take in over the next few years.  Really hope we can arrange a trip to the Link museum in the spring.  Also want to take in a train trip before too long.  With the push for mass transit and more rail commutes, perhaps that will be easier to do soon.

Have a good night,
Dennis

Evening all,  Ran a few trains the last couple of days to give Don's boxcar a workout.  First in a while.  Yesterday's snow is almost history with the nice Sunny day we had today.  To hold for a few and then maybe another batch on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.  Oh well there is no where I have to go. Smile

Have a good week.

Weather turned cloudy today.  40 degrees and a light rain is starting.

Put a little fibergalss insulation up yesterday.  Itchy, itchy.

Got the Polar Express on the layout yesterday.  Promptly spit both tires off of the loco in the first 30" or so that it ran.  Got to replace the lantern light on the talking coach too.

Got a phone call from mom Friday night.  Found out we've got two relatives in deep trouble with cancer.  One is in a hospice.  Early Dec. just seems to be a bad time of year for this family.  Dad died a year ago today, my oldest sister today in 2002, and now this news.  Life is odd at times...

Prayers for those who are recovering and those who need help.

Later all.

Dennis they told me what iv medicine it was, don't remember of course, except she said it was like  morphine. and they check your stats on a regular basis. Slept all afternoon and going back to bed soon. Brutus stop for the banilla but leave me at home, thank you..S.J.

Hi GYZ,

Got back from MOMs from a nice SNO HI O of a couple of three inches o0f snow.  We had about 4-5 where I was hunting.  I tried to push deer to 3 of our GYZ.  I spent all day making pushes and walkind about 5 miles and guess what NO DEER.  Uncle saw 3 early in morning before I was doing pushing.  Got a good workout in snow and slept great but NO DEER.

PHILAKNIGHT, I'm with you on our dire need for deer in this state.  Game Commission screwed up everything by allowing 3-5 deer per hunter all you had to do was pay for extra licenses, back in 1995.  I said this is going to be our downfall and it is happening now.  It use to be one deer per hunter per year, period.  If you got a buck you had to forfit the doe tag and vicea versa.  Now I saw just 2 tails for 2 days hunting.  I hunt hard do all the pushes for the guys and don't mind the walking.  But this Saturday during the snow only came across 3 set of tracks, something is wrong.  Game commision has to fix this.  They ruined a great tradition in Pa.

PAT, farmers here have a green tag area where hunters can purchase a tag and hunt deer on that land.  So the farmers are taken care of.

DENNIS wish your back yard was here.

I still have this week.  Oh well and FLINTLOCK SEASON MY FAVORITE SEASON it starts the day after CHRISTMAS.

Stay frosty,
