Jim,

Welcome back. I went 650-651 crazy while you were gone.Big Smile I've now got two green 650s, a green 651, and a red 651 to round that part of the collection out. The arrival of the red 651 was interesting to say the least. I was going to hold off on the green cars, but I won the set of three for $56 in the last few seconds.

Not much else to report today. I was going to work on the layout after I got home from work, but I decided to uncover the Probe and drive it around the neighborhood. It has been sitting for a few weeks, and I needed that stress release after work anyway.

thanks to all for the welcome here. I see most are happy that I posted some pics on another thread here glad you all liked them. I have been working on a layout since the very late 70's I have had a total of 18 so far yet to finish one! the current one is okay but discovered not really happy with it as I should have modeled after my beloved pigs eye yard in north St.Paul,Minnesota . the 17th layout had to be torn down as we had termites and it was smack in the places they had to drill, my wife cried as I literally took wire cutters and severed all the wiring. back to # 18 it's an okay layout I have an engine area with a korber roundhouse and a bowser turntable along with 63&54" curves a separate depot area, it just has no room for switching cars out to any industries my room is long 19' but only 7.5' wide leaves very little for what I see those with the 15&20' wide layouts! the other trouble I seem to be jinxed if I think or work on train a car or something in on or around the house goes belly up and not just a time or two I mean every time so I tend to stay away and frankly that stinks! I am fortunate that unknowing to either myself or wife we both loved trains as my wife grew up on a farm in Grindstone Pa.and was born in a train station, and I grew up 3 blocks away from the CB&Q pigs eye yard so a train layout and buying trains is not an issue in fact my wife prefers hobby stores over department stores! we live in desert southwest so when the snow belt folks are enjoying the summer we do as you do in winter hibernate for nicer weather. I am okay at doing the easy wiring and building bench work my wife is good at artistic paints and how things blend ya know she's the first thing I did right and am lucky to have her. I hope you all have a great weekend with any luck maybe this weekend's the one I can play trains see ya later!

Hmmmmm - That might be an option for the Jersey Princess....Smile,Wink, & Grin

Another hot one here in hades...went to lunch at the Panera, so the Princess could get 1.5 hours of homework completed.  She then went to visit a friend an MAYBE do homework...sure, right.

Got my Oreck back from the shop for it's free annual tuneup, then off to HobbyWorld to pick up the new Lionel catalog.  The owner gave it to me gratis, which I was thankful for.  I'll get to it later tonight, I think.

Just finished vacuuming the house, catching up on the e-mails, waiting for the Devils vs Panthers, but there seems to be >yuk< college football on FSN Florida?  Hockey is supposed to be on Banged Head.

I'll run out to the living room and see if it's on HD

Yanks up 2-0 on the Twinkies, play tomorrow in the Dome.

Check ya later!

Hey all from sunny Spain.

We finised early today at the tool shop, so we visited Monsarat.  It is a local mountain of very unique shapes.  There is a monistary near the top.  We reached it by cable car, then an inclined railway up to the next level where there was a chapel.  As long as we were almost to the top, we took the hour long hike to the top.  Great views.  Even though it was a little hazy, we could see 35 to 40 klicks.  I'm told that on a really clear day, you can see the Pyrineys (mountaind betwen France & Spain).  I was impressed that I did not blow up any cardiac plumbing with the areobic work out that this hike was.  Took a different trail down the mountain. Hundreds of stair steps along the way.  I don't think I'll be able to walk normally for a few days.

An electric cog railway operates between the base of the mountain and the monistary as well.

Walked through the museum there.  Mostly an art museum.  Saw some pieces by Salvador Dali, Picaso, Monet.  I find the depth of history here in Europe to be mind boggling.

Tried one of the local treats the other night - deep fried squid.  I classed it as unremarkable, but better than grits.

Later, all.

Fife, Congratulations.  So, if we visit the mid atlantic area, should we stay off the sidewalks?  Just kidding.  So long as you have an extra set of wheels, it will mean freedom for both her and you.

Morning.  Off to Miss Edna's.  Church play practice was fine.  Also found out I am one of the honored guests so I get to go through the meal line ahead of other folks [800 people to feed].  Right up my line. DinnerLaugh  Not really as I have cut back on eating.  Did not go to the gym yesterday or today.  Did do a lot of walking last night though.  Got to go to other end of County for a Centennial Gala tonight.  Big fancy event.  Later.

Morning all.  Fife, sounds like you had a great time.
Well, stayed up way too late last night.  Slept till 7 this morning when our son came in as he wanted to watch "Clone Wars" that is on the DVR.  Bride came down with him, I stayed in bed, but sleep was not to happen.

Not much planned for the day.  I had picked up more plaster at Hobby Lobby, so I am sure more work on the layout is  at hand.  Hey, not much for revenge, but son just stepped on a Lego creation and said "OUCH!"  Yeah kid, try stepping on one of those things in the middle of the night with the lights off.  Boy can they hurt.

Chief, good luck with the play.  Sure y'all do well.  We have a Christmas Contada that they are getting ready for.  No, I won't be playing, but sure I will do some of the lights/camera or something along those lines.

God Bless,

Dennis

Ahoy maties! Pirate  Was a magnificent day at the Annapolis City dock yesterday.  I was like a kid in a candy shop.  Went on a lot of boats, looked at every vessel there, and at the end of the day...brought home a $22 event t-shirt.  The organizers do a nice job with the show, I just don't believe it's worth the $17 admission.  The Admiral enjoyed people watching.

jonadel - All around the best deal I could find was the 44 Jeanneau.  They brought a deceptively big cruiser in pale blue awlgrip, that was hard to walk away from fo around 200K.  Our local builder, eyachts, brought an example of a Chesapeake 20.  This is just perfect for the blue-collar guy who wants to get out under the canvas, and will be offered brand new for 30K.

HI GYZ,

57 and damp here.  Had fire with wife and Janedog last nite, dogs and burgers and OL MILs, GREAT.  Started raining after 8, we were covered and was another plesant nite out by the fire.  Came in and ran trains for about an hour and a half, had a small PILE UP.  Milk car coupler came open from Triplex engine and rammed back of the observation car.  NO MAJOR injuries, quick fix with the gum band on the coupler, all were happy again.  Our Fball team won now we are 6-0.  Was homecoming and one of my "shop queens" was honored as Home coming Queen.

the only time I have heard of a post war steamer smoking really well  was when it had a short and fried the wires!

Thats true it happened to me a few months ago. Got the old 671 out after many years and was fooling around with it on a test loop , was running great and it flew of the track and fell to the concrete floor. No visable damage. Then a few mins later it starts smoking,I thougght it just jarred some  pellet residue down into the heater element, then its smoking REAL good then it starts to loose speed and is smoking real, real good. Impact shorted wire and melted the heater element to a puddle. cut wire to smoke unit and all runs ffine luckly, just have to buy a new smoke unitSign - Oops

Picked up a 400 dollar car yesterday to replace the Geo. 94 lebaron four door, outside is rough (paint went bad hardly any left on the hood) but inside is really nice and its only got 58000 orig miles on it. ex boss's mother owned it, she bought it new and didn't use it much over the years she passed away a couple months ago. So it was literly owned by and old lady that only drove it to churchLaugh runs great..........Steve

Isn't adjustable smoke output only on the more recent engines. I think I only have one that will do that.

I have quite a few PS2 engines that are several years old that have adjustable smoke output, it's all controlled with the hand held unit.

New Lionel smoke units are equal to MTH.  I did buy some MTH units at York as they are more compact and can be installed in narrower bodies than the Lionel ones.

Jon, about right as dozed off while watching Body of Lies on MAX.  Second time I have watched it.  Its good.  Shows Langley can zoom right down on you and see all that goes on.  Its a CIA thing in the Middle East.

Bed time.

It might have come along with PS 2.0.  Those are the only MTH engines I have right now.

My MTH steamers have adjustable smoke output.  I can crank it way down to just vapors coming out, or full on room evacuation.  Better to have the ability and not use it!

Banks,

If you are looking for affordable PW Lionel steamer with good smoke output, make it a point to check out the early 2026.

I spent about nine hours working on the layout today, and all of the track is finally in place. I just need to screw it down and get the wiring done before I can run anything.  I have found that benchwork and laying track are about the same in terms of the process. It is fun at the start, but it gets panifully repetitive after some time.

Good Evening

Rained all day, just slow but steady.

MTH engines have the most smoke but unless you have an exhaust fan you cannot leave them on very long. Post war Lionel engines will give enough smoke if the smoke unit and pump are in good condition. We went out for supper and I was just lazy today. Banilla is ready for the thingy...S.J.

Banks, the only time I have heard of a post war steamer smoking really well  was when it had a short and fried the wires!  You can get pretty good smoke doing the trick the Chief does with adding fiber glass insulation.  From what I have seen, MTH has the best smoke units.  Perhaps you could get a common PW engine like a 2037 and replacing the smoke unit with a MTH model.  Not sure, have never done it.  ONe thought if you are not sold on a PW locomotive.  You could get a MTH either Proto 1, or prior that has a good smoke unit, but lacks the rest of the modern stuff.  You can pick one up for a little over $100.

Well, got some more scenery done tonight.  Doesn't look like much, but I took care of a rather difficult wall that has two tunnel portals on two different levels.  Also, figured out a plan to replace a mountain side with a tall building.  That should cover what I need and afford plenty of room for the trains to leave the yard.

Off to watch TV for a rest.  Later.

Hey Caroliner, how is watching TV through the backs of your eyelids? Laugh

All packed and ready to go early tomorrow for northern Iowa and judging marching bands ... in perhaps an inch of snow, that might be interesting.  Seemed odd tonight when packing that I included heavy coats and snow boots Whistling oh well, the weather guessers at best are 1/2 correct with forecasts.  This would be a first --  I've worked in 100+ temps and low 30's but never in the white stuff.

Hope to be home in time to watch the Hawkeye's and Meechigan, not quite sure what to expect.  Wish it was one of those cupcake teams from the south ........

Morning & TGIF (FINALLY!)Cool

Whilest youse guys in the Heartland are seeing light flurries, we’re dealing with near record heat up to 90 today and high humidity – feels like July not October.  Really missing the colder weather.

Well, here goes Alaska. Laugh  I'm sure Vinnie the Wipper will not find you there. Whistling

Evening all.  Put on bagging blades on JD.  Wow what lift.  Will suck all the loose dirt off the ground.  Mowed my yard and the neighbor's.  That is after I pulled some strings with the high sheriff and got him out of jail.  He was released to my custody.  Man, did he get a chewing and a "come to Jesus" talking too.  Warm and humid.  Turning colder and damp tomorrow through Sunday.  Got Church play practice tomorrow AM early.  Off to watch TV for a rest.  Later.

 Hello all,

Another week over. Mid 60's and rain here. Supposed to rain all night. Got one piece of soybean combined before the rain. The other is not quite ready.

If  a fellow were looking for an inexpesive Postwar style loco that smokes well and had no electronics what should he look for? There are two small local train shows coming up. I may divide Dad's Christmas layout into blocks so with two trains on the track one could be stationary.

Grandkids may come in the morning. If so Thomas will be run. After that the Tractor engine. It is in the garage with the hood and fuel tank off.. Pulled the injectors and confirmed the head gasket is blown between two front cylinders.

Waiting on Mrs to get ready. we are going out to eat.

GRITS again tomorrow morning  YUMMMMMMMMM

Prayers for all who need them
