"S" curve trasition?
Posted by Boyd on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 12:28 AM

I removed the 3% grade S curve on my layout that uses 48" curve fastrack and am replacing it with a turnaround loop in the closet. When this is all done I think the climbing grade will be below 1.5%. Its not quite finished but here is what I have in the works leading up to closet, then loop then out:

51" of straight  O tubular  to

three right  072 tubular to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transiton  piece to

3/4 of a circle  going left 48" Fastrack to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transition piece to

two right 072 tubular to

one 5" straight O tubular to

one left 072 tubular to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transition piece to

50" of straight Fastrack.

Today I picked up one section of K-line O tubular 120" curve so I could change the about turnaround loop to:

51" of straight O tubular to

three right 072 tubular to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transition piece to

3/4 of a circle going left 48" Fastrack to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transition piece to

two right 072 tubular to

one left 120" curve section O tubular to

one 5" straight O to Fastrack transition piece to

50" of straight Fastrack.

If you all are lost trying to follow this I could film and show it on youtube.

Your right, kinda confusing.  Understand the track pieces you are using, a diagram would be extremely helpful.  Then what are you asking?  I couldn't find a question.

Are you asking about transistion pieces?

Grade percentage?

Track compatibility?

I am totally lost, I dont think many people will take the time to make a drawing of the pieces you have identified, and then try to anticipate what the question is.

I'm still drawing.  I should be done in about two weeks, so I can anticipate the  Question

Boyd, ya gotta help us a little bit here.  Do you have a derailment problem?  If so, try putting short straight sections in between the curved sections.

The difference between the 2 setups is one section outside the closet:

#1. 2 R curve 072 into 1 O half straight into 1 L 072 curve to 52" of straight track.

#2. 2 R curve 072 into 1 L curve 120" circle into 52" of straight track.

Tonight I set it up with the #2 combination. I'll do a video for youtube friday and post a link here.

 Boyd,

How did it work when you set up #2 ?  Still not sure if you have a question, or making a statement of an improvement.  Just be careful not to step on the track.  Good Luck

My basic question is does it help to have a straight section between a left curve going into a right curve or between a right curve going into a left curve? Here is my youtube video:

The setup I have is not leveled so I have not pulled any cars with an engine over the new portion going into and out of the closet.

Boyd,
I plugged your pieces into RR-Track and I don't see a problem with what you are doing. I would get rid of the 120 degree curve and replace it with an O-72. I would then put a 1.75" FasTrack straight between the transition tracks and the O-48 curves.

I don't think you will have a problem with cars derailing as long as you aren't running really long trains. I have Atlas O-45 and O-54 curves on my layout with a few S turns and I don't have problems - I keep my heavier cars toward the engines and the lighter cars toward the caboose. If you reverse them then you will have derailments, or if you mix them you might have derailments.

If you had more room in the closet I would go with O-72 curves.

To the right side of that closet is the closet for my office. If it weren't for the fact we rent here I'd put a hole through the wall and use 072 curves in there. My office/closet mirror my bedroom/closet.
