Buckeye was right. Slept a little late and packed up. Spanky, my flight is a 97 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab with 350 V-8. [very low mileage as been on very few trips, mostly towing boats to lakes and ponds]. 5 hour drive to Rolesville, NC. Pretty day and should be home fishing. Everyone have a great day and God bless all.

CHECK THIS OUT GUYS!!! TOO DAMN FUNNY!!!!

Subject: GM's Answer to Bill Gates comments about the auto industryThought you might find this interestingThis is a rebuttal to the old Gates comments.
All of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would cra***wice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Where's the coffee? Where's the Chief? Looks like nobody's up this early. It's 54 degrees in Roger's Corners, Ohio and it looks like a beautiful day. I'm going to be near Buckeye Yard today. Never know what I'll see.

Have a good one. [:)]

I'm going fishing today. Getting things ready this AM. Got red hots done and coffee so I can shower and hook up to the Ranger. Crappie are shallow on the rocks at the State Parks landing [Super told me yesterday PM]. Just back the boat off the trailer and use trolling motor and catch a ton. [8D] Buckeye, eat your heart out. Jim, you too. Grass mowing [I just did that Thursday], trains and other chores will wait. Might even go back tomorrow. Let me get moving. Jumped from winter to summer. High temps are burning up garden plants. Had to water yesterday when I got home. All have a good day and God bless all. [Will be thinking of you at the lake as I pull in lots of fish].

Good Morning All

Well its 44 deg in NE Ohio (what a change from 73 Deg yesterday). We went from a high of 82 to 42 last night with a big storm coming thru. They say it is coming back as a warm front tonite with maybe more storms. Hope it doesn’t blow any trains off the tracks.

Chief,

After 3 days absence from the forum, nice to see that this post is taking off. I've been planting fruit trees over the weekend: plum, peach, pear, cheery, all over the back yard, with the goal of providing much needed shade for the pouch, fruit to eat, and eventually, a garden railway and nice garden pond.

Temps yesterday were in upper 80s here in N. Virginia. Hate to see what August will be like.

ChiefCrappie - since you're gonna be catchin' a boat load full o' them crappers, why not have a fish fry and invite all of us? Big Boy can introduce us to Big Girl, Dooodaaah can learn how to pronounce some cities in Ohio, Tom can blow smoke rings with his steamers, and we can see who can get their upgraded K-Line trains with speed control to go the fastest with the DCS handheld...(wink)

So...better bring home LOTS! I presume you have a propane fired fish fryer...

Sounds Yummy[dinner][dinner]I used to do some generic fishing. Those pan fish are nice but you need a bunch for lunch. A friend of mine once filleted a sunny alive, threw it back and let it swim away. I don't think it got too far.

The Carolinas are 2 of the 4 states I have never visited, the others are Oregon and Hawaii. The problem with Hawaii is there are very few trains.[swg]

I notice that there is a high correlation between toy trains and fishing. Here's a quote of the day for the fishermen:

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking.

...which leads to the 2nd part of the quote:

"Give a man a drink and he'll be happy for a few hours...
Give a man a train and he'll smile for the rest of his life."

Very good, JD.

I actually took this from #27; titled: "Murphy's Other Laws"

I don't know how many of these could relate to toy trains; perhaps #33, with the high expenses we are "forced" to pay for these train gems. Also #s 8 and 10 for layout planning/building might be appropriate.

Got some on ice for the neighbor to eat. Widow lady and disabled son. Will get them ready in the morning for them tommorrow. I'm only one at home now that eats fish. Usually fry mine in FryDaddy on sitting on the stove. Have to sue exhaust fan as wife fusses about odor. I do have a big cooker and use to do big fish fries. Caught a bunch but no monsters. Some good size ones though. Most of them are in the lake for another day.

Chief,
Holy Toledo!!! [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]You mean you fly fish for the crappie and you own a fly rod!! That means only one thing to me - trout. There must be trout near you or you wouldn't own that fly rod. Am I correct? [:p][:p][:p]

I learned to fly fish in a very cold stream in the Rockies. We have only three streams in Ohio with trout, but there are steelies up north.

I use a 9 foot #6.

No, not fly fish. Use slip cork and jig with minnow or just plain minnow. The fly rod is limber and makes for a good fight. I use trigger spin [under spin cast] and Magnithin line.

Well, why don't you just use a ultra-light? I fish for walleye in Canada with an ultra light.
The fun really starts when Mr. Pike decides he wants the leach and I am holding him with 4 pound test.

BigGirl,

Forgot to mention that was hilarious about GM v. Bill Gates. Imagine if Bill Gates made trains. You could make the same argument. Come to think of it, some toy trains act like that.

I dunno guys and gals, using a small popper on top with floating fly line for bluegill and pan fish, with an occasional bass smackin' it is kinda fun, too...

But Buck nailed it - a trophy pike or muskie on ultralight will change you young folks into a geezer like me!

How's this for a smallmouth?

try bottom-from shore fishing using a egg sinker and a few splitshot bait a #10 of 8 with shreadded wheat .... take a large busciut , dunk it once in water where fishing (helps cover human scent)and mold into dough... you cant cast it off , stays on for way long time, carp, bass, crappy, bluegull, catfish plus others all go bonkers for it.
the egg sinker alowes fist to hit and not feel weght... add split shot under egg sinker about 2 feet up..... and by all means use camo line ;)

That is simular to Striper fishing in rivers. Just use live shad instead of wheat cake. Will try your suggestion.

Hey Boys--Love this fishing talk.

when i find my pics i got some doozies of a ton of 13'' crappies--the ex and i both limited out!! we were using ultralights with spider wire. slip bobbers and snells tipped with minnows.

i will have Big_Boy scan 'em and post 'em.

the best time i ever had pike fishing was in canada near the town of jelico(dont remember what lake) the fish were so aggressive if you had your setup hanging over the side of the boat they would literally jump out of the water to get it. the fish were snapping line left and right(we were using like 30lb test and 18" steel leaders)finally we just started attaching our big beach ball bobbers to the top of the leader so when the line snapped we could just follow the bobber and get not only our leader and bobber but the fish most times as well. the smallest fish we caught was about 10lbs. we went memorial weekend and had to sleep in our car cause it kept snowing. the guys went the year before on the same weekend and got sunburnt-so we didnt bring a heater or nothing.

thanks dave - i thought you guys would get a kick out of that.

The best of both worlds...fishing while riding the train...gotta love it! Here's the deal - Buckeye, the master angler, is using ultra light tackle and a Mepps #3, and hooked into a Lake Envirotex 30 lb. northern. He had the engineer stop the train because he thinks he has a chance of landing that monster. Wanna bet on the outcome?

The truth is better than fiction. [:D][:D][:D]

I took this photo from the baggage car of the Algoma Central heading north into Canada to go fishing. This is one of the flag stops where those going fishing exit the train and get into the cedar strip boats for the trip across the lake to the lodge.

If you like trains, fishing, clean air, wilderness and adventure take a look at this web site.
http://www.agawacanyontourtrain.com/depotmain.html

Oh! I almost forgot. TRAINS magazine, August 2000 featured the Algoma Central and the trips detailed on the previously noted url.
