Well- as to "you donĀ“t know the NZR engines":
I fondly remember the famous Ka and Kb class 4-8-2, which certainly belong to my favourites as well, though not mentioned above.

The PRR J1,P&WV 2-6-6-4,B&0 EM1 and B&LE 2-10-4.The one I would like to have seen run ,the most, would be the PRR T-1 running somewhere in Indiana about 130 mph.To see that happen would probably put me in shock.

For me my favorite is also one most people feel to be the ugliest. I love EMD's BL2 especially painted in FEC red and yellow with silver stripes and black cat whiskers. This ugly duckling proved to EMD that road crews needed visibility both front and back. This lead to the creation of the GP7. And as i look at it now maybe the earliest version of the "W" cab...LOL>> [2c]

Hello mclaren, I just found your question about Penn. R.R. S-2 . Have you tried the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania ?? The research can be frustrating at times,but keep chuggin on. N&W & C&O had one , but Pennsy built their own . Switch8frg.

My choice would be the Pennsylvania J-1 2-10-4, partially because of the circumstances of its creation.

The J-1 was a product of the War Production Board, which exercised strong authority over the production of capital goods during the years of World War II. New designs were outlawed, so the Pennsy was forced to choose between a near-copy of an N&W A 2-6-6-4, or a C&O T-1 2-10-4. This is also the reason behind the J's lack of a classic Belpaire firebox.

It's a pity J's weren't allowed on the Harrisburg-Altoona Middle Division due to curvature restrictions near Union Furnace, but they could be found on just about any main line west of Altoona. Reportedly, a few were dispatched to Newberry yard in Williamsport, via the Bald Eagle Branch, for a short time.

Their perfect stamping ground, however, was probably the East Slope helper grade. I've always been tempted to think that the combination of this new power, plus the new set of crossovers at MG tower halfway up the grade, was one of the most productive investments Pennsy, or the nation, ever made.

The J's spent the rest of their too-brief lives in main line freight and helper service, including a stint on the Sandusky line in partnership with some leased Santa Fe 2-10-4's in the summer of 1956. When the end came in the fall of 1957, many were reportedly cut up within the familiar confines of the East Altoona roundhouse, and made their final trip to the steel mills in gondolas. Regrettably, none of the class were preserved, a fate shared with NYC's magnificent Hudsons.

Every once in a while, it crosses my mind that one of those classic '57 Fords or Chevys might include a slight contribution from a Pennsy J -- poetic justice!

Only 1 possibility here--The Pennsylvania Baldwin S-2 Turbine.

PS--Does anybody know the serial number that was on the builders plate of the S-2 Turbine? I'm such a fanatic about the S-2 that I want to have a repro builders plate made.

Well, i do luv the LEHIGH VALLEY streamlined pacifics and hudsons but my all time fav would be the Nickle Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshires, I just love them![:D] Here are some other favs

EMD E-8's. A big locomotive that did a big job here in the South. Painted up right, they were beautiful. Come to think of it, I miss the bulldog noses, even though they were a visibility nightmare.
