Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. Pretty weather here today with a little bit of fog and (for Eric) temperatures in the 40s. Gas is at $4.15 and holding.

GMA train was in WV this a.m. at Harpers Ferry - some nice scenery and pictures of the B&O in that area.

Pete was in with more information and some pictures of double Fairlees. Hope you have a good trip and visit today.

Nick - Book arrived this a.m. in good shape. I agree with your definition of a lecture. Fortunately, I don't do a lot of that. Most all of our training activity is hands-on (with proficiency tests and demonstrations) given the nature of what we do. It takes approx 1.5 yrs to get through our program and we have a ton of material to cover. If I sat and talked to them, no learning would take place.

I appreciate the information you posted re narrow gauge and related history - I keep "larnin'" more and more. Shrews? I know some (lol). Tell you what, I'll trade you a couple of possums which, around here, are the size of small dogs (almost got one on the way home last night). That would certainly shake up the locals.

I was looking through your layout pictures - a fair amount of construction is taking place. In picture 3 there is a very quick stop on the upper level. Glad to see so much traffic in picture 4.

Allan - There were many Scots, Welsh, and Cousin Jacks involved in developing the mines here. This was, of course, because they had the practical experience necessary to do it. You look at pictures of old head frames and the like from back in the day in So. WV and you'd swear they were taken back in the old country.

Eric - So the T41 has a 567 inside. Turbocharged? Was the 567 built under license as well?

OSP was by with a nice L&N book - got me all homesick again. The splash was intended to save what was left of my voice, not necessarily for inspiration. Have a good visit with the "Guvna General" Oh, your e-mail just came in - will do so.  Congrats to Juneau - I'll bet this was a test - how can it be 65 mos. in himan years - hah!  you thought nobody read your material (grin) - anyway the K9 Korps sends congratulations - Milk Bones are on the next Zeppelin.

Work safe

G'day Gents!

The day is off to an inglorious start insofar as Pete's arrival is concerned - already 2 plus hours LATE. Thumbs Down [tdn]

The bar, however, had TWO morning visitors - Shane ‘n Pete! Now that's a PLUS! Thumbs Up [tup]

Odd, Yogi ‘n I seem to understand how 65 months in human years equates to 5 years 5 months old. Hmmmmm. Yeah, it was a test . . . you failed, Shane! <grin>

Figured it was a good time to drop something off from our sub-basement archives room - since there most probably won't be anyone "in" for the remainder of the daylite . . .

Here's something to enjoy regarding the Southern Pacific (SP) from a 1951 advertisement in my personal collection.

Did you hear what the ‘49er said about the

"City of San Francisco"

"WHAT A TRAIN, PARDNER! SHE'S THE FASTEST THING ON WHEELS BETWEEN CHICAGO AND THE GOLDEN GATE! ANOTHER OF SP'S WONDERFUL WAYS WEST!"

Did you know that you can board a modern streamliner in Chicago and travedl at your ease the same route the ‘49ers struggled over in the Gold Rush? Well, you can. In the crack extra-fare "City of San Francisco" for instance, or the "Overland" that shows you California's lovely High Sierra by day.

Until you've done this you've never really seen the West.

We've just issued a new folder we're rather proud of, "Planning Your Overland Route Trip." Tells you all about accommodations on these great "name trains" (finest Pullman; economical Chair Car).

By the way, at San Francisco these streamliners connect with our famous "Lark," "Daylight" and "Starlight" south to Los Angeles, thence with other great S.P. streamliners eastward. Or with the new "Cascade" and "Shasta Daylight" northward, right past gorgeous 14,161 foot Mt. Shasta to the lovely Pacific Northwest.

Mail that coupon today for free folders.

"CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO" Chicago-San Francisco via Omaha, Ogden, Great Salt Lake, Reno, Oakland. 40 ½ hours westbound via CNW-UP-SP. Shown here with Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

Good Afternoon Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please, round for the house and $ for the jukebox.

But remember one dog year = seven human years.  Therefore Juneau is 31.25 yrs old in human years.  Sorry, I'm having a good time with this one - couldn't resist.  IOW, I don't fail, I'm just misunderstood. (lol).  Hope the Guvna General arrives soon.

Evening all-just a bookmark whilst I catch up-Looks like at least two of the company are likely to be ensconced in the train room, working on the first brews of the evening and,I suspect, working a running-in turn on the new `big steam` Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]...........

Anyway-heres a pic to fill the gap and will be back soon....

Well then-here we all are-apart from ROB (Alien abduction..?..more likely to be pulling down double shifts and sleeping the rest )-just back from a pleasantly mellow band night-bass man Rich couldn`t make it so I took along my fretless jazz bass (new-ish toy) -need to get back with that since small Hannah is starting cello lessons ( oh lordy) as well as piano-have promised I will help her with it all-shouldn`t be too difficult, just have to re-tune it-C-G-D-A instead of E-A-D-G--same intervals as the mandolin (G-D-A-E) -should be fun-of a sort.....

Right then Leon -suprise us-lets have a round of the drink of your choice-but as a safety measure I want to see you drink one first..........

So-to the business of the night:-

ERIC-R.E Volvo`s-I mispoke there, was the V70 I was thinking of,not the 740-apologies for confusion-as noted above there is a cute little gray critter in the pix-look carefully, its there...

Must confess I have lived my life ignorant of the existance of the lingonberry-my loss I fear..

Now the coaches-definately Brits-Midland Rly,poss to a Deeley design-the Exely company used to make 4mm models of them back in the 50`s -also the signals-upper quadrant main line signal-upper arm is the `home` and lower arm is the `distant` for the next home-track is immaculately ballasted by the way.....Approve [^]-still looking for pix of the Moor Vale line(at Ringwood,nr Southampton) for clues about the loco builder.....

ALLAN-Had no idea the Vectra was such a widely travelled model....this one is (or was) the mother in laws and has recently gone for recycling-given her rather robust approach to the rules of the road,I`m suprised it lasted as long as it did--assume from your note that Holden and Vauxall are all part of the G.M mega-corp -just to cheer us all up-here is a really old car

img{sportsday041.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

and another one ,whilst we are at it

img{sportsday033.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

There now-don`t it take you back...........

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Appreciate that the old Prince doesn`t float yer boat but 143 years old and still working-got to admire that...glad you enjoyed the pix-R.E the Duchess-be careful what you wish for.............Apologies if parts of yesterdays post were a bit `wobbly`-was trying a new German bottled ale-a mite stronger than I am used to Whistling [:-^]-Excellent S.P stuff by the way-nice one-hope you enjoy the weekend with the Wolfman Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Thumbs Up [tup]

SHANE-Glad the book arrived in good order (one less thing to worry about) -Am of a mind with you R.E lectures-was the same when I got my chefs ticket-no amount of blackboard time is of more than marginal use when you are up against it-only way to learn is to roll up the sleeves and get stuck in..( 3 baked otters and a squid en croute for table 6).......

Layout pix are a bit behind the times-a fair bit of progress has been made since then-in fact had the first test run on the upper level today-all very smooth-just a bit of pinning down to do on the new upper station approaches and the upper level staging tracks to put down and we are cooking on gas....

Interesting that you spotted the upper level halt-is at the point where the line divides between the upper and lower levels-Is going to be Kelston halt -Kelston was a real station on the line but much closer to Bristol, however,as a memorial to Alan who gave a good deal of his time to a club for disadvantaged kids called Kelston Hall I think it would be appropriate to give him his own station.....call me an old softy-I can take it ....

Right-show tomorrow night and gotta do the school run as well-also halfway through replacing the cladding on the dormer windows and gotta get it all done before I start the new job on monday (thanks lord)-better love and leave you-will try and make it in tomorrow-but don`t be suprised if a bit wobbly-PETE & TOM-enjoy the weekend-Everybody else -likewise Approve [^]

Take care-speak soon

Hi Tom and all,

Leon, the usual round of Tui`s for all the guys` please.Yeah!! [yeah]

Nick. You are correct, Holden is the Aussie arm of GM, they used to assemble most of the old Vauxhall/Opel models re-badged as Holden`s, they make a large purely Aussie sedan called the Commadore, 6cyl or V8 motored. Couple of interesting old car shots, could`nt pick the makes` though.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3. Here in NZ most of the coal mines are drift or opencast mines, although their are a couple of mines in Southland with the traditional head frames`. Those old country miners` sure travelled the world round did`nt they?Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete. Hope you and Tom are having a great time together, would have loved to have joined you there for the fun time.

Eric. And there was me trying to find a Moose in that photo, saw the red berries OK, talk about not seeing the wood for all the trees`.Confused [%-)] Some interesting pix of the EMU Class X1 control desk , the cars` and the semaphore do look very British.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom. A veryHappy B-Day [bday] to Juneau, give him a nice big juicy bone from me.Dinner [dinner] Would have loved to have joined you and Pete at your place for the weekend, glad to hear Pete arrived OK even though the train was 2hrs late, hope you both have a great time, sorry to hear the Train Wreck Saloon was flooded, hope the other bar was just as good?Sad [:(]Sigh [sigh] Nice re-post of Passenger Train Nostalgia #22 on the SP RR`s "City of San Francisco".Approve [^] Their was a big increase in Auckland`s population over the last 10 years with a lot of Asian immigrants from Hong Kong, mainland China, and South Korea coming in. A lot of Vauxhall, Opel and Holden cars` were the same models, they just re-badged them to suit the particular market.Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

See ya, Allan

Good evening Captain Toma and Gentlemen!!

Hi Leon, kind of quiet day today? Yes, a #3 special would be great! Fries and a cold Keith's, please.

Another work week done! Not much to tell tonite, no breaking news.

Tom –  Expensive gas in your area. Gas here is $3.35. Still very expensive but not as bad as back east.Smile [:)]

I know you need more room in order to expand your layout. Maybe you should talk to Vito.Evil [}:)] I am sure he is willing to help if he will make some money doing so.Mischief [:-,]

You are right about wild animals. Give them the room they want and need and everybody will be happy.Smile [:)] But sometimes you just bump into them. Interesting in Sweden is that both bears and wolf are spreading to areas where they haven’t been seen for many, many years.

Thanks for the SP ad!Thumbs Up [tup] My favorite railroad! The book, “Snowbound Streamliner”, is something for you and Juneau!Wink [;)] Interesting reading on that link. Three days in the snow!

CM3 –  $4.15 for gas!Grumpy [|(] That is very steep! 80 cents more than here. We never had any price increase after Ike.Smile [:)]

I don’t know if the 567 engine in class T41 was turbocharged, but I don’t think so. The 567s were imported from the US. The rest of the locomotives were built under license in Sweden.

Pete –  Time for another trip to Kirkwood!Smile [:)]  Hope you and Tom will have agood time at the library and wherever else you are going. The Trainwreck Saloon I suppose? Ooops, I just learned it is closed due to flooding!Sigh [sigh]

Nick –  Nice photo of that Northern Alberta Road  train!Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks for the info on the cars and the signals!Thumbs Up [tup] They look British to me. I’ve never seen that “Miniture” train place before. Will go back next time I go to the old country. Hope you will find out about the loco builder.Smile [:)]

Sorry to hear that you have missed the lingonberries so far. Good stuff!Dinner [dinner]

Nice looking old timers!Thumbs Up [tup] I can’t say what make though. Confused [%-)]

Allan –  The good thing is that moose don’t eat lingonberries!Wink [;)] I know what you mean about not seeing the wood for all the trees. It happens to me all the time.Smile [:)]

hello Tom and all in

Here's one big round for the house, and a quick breakfast for me.

Problem is that four letter word w-o-r-k has been giving me probs recently - even today is a bad one, so no chance for a catch up - although I see the regulars have been holding the fort. Each day iIhope to make it - each day not so - hence no apols for my abscence from me when i should have done so - as Tom once said, I want to be here - so this message is that apology - I've missed the banter and hope to be back more frequently soon!

Esp since my last reports from France I have managed to encounter a steam powered sentinel bus in Whitby, walked the trail of the disused railway line at Robin Hood's bay (and been in the old station hotel at Staithes, a pub any regular at our place would want to spend time in - £1.50 a pint for some of the best brewed beer I've tasted for a while - yep - £1.50...). Spent the bank hol at the Ecclesbourne Valley railway, visited the Coventry Museum of Road Transport, and got to see the Rolls Royce aero engine private historic colection at the 'building open day' held the other week. All of which are experiences I've been keen to share with you regulars.

Anyway - hopefully be back soon - all the best, and have a drink on me

(Incidentally Pete, hopefully you got my e-mail with my contact details off line)

All the best

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present (I know Pete's here, I see the black bag and his boots sticking out from under the pool table); coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Another beautiful day - this is the best run of weather we have had all year - gas is still at $4.15/gal.  West Virginia lost to Colorado in OT last night, IMHO, the game was not as close as the score indicated.

Nick - Yes it is Northern Alberta.  I have an NA boxcar (N scale, yet) in one of the boxes in the east wing.  It sounds as though you have a full schedule, sir.  Bice touch with your station name on the layout.

Eric - Well, if it's not turbocharged it'll have that classic GP sound.  Appreciate your answer to my questions.  Also liked the AEM7 picture you sent along from one of your sojourns in DC.

DL - Sounds as though you have been busy as well.

OSP - City of San Francisco material is good - the book by Church is one I have been meaning to get for a long time.  He had done several outstanding works on SP steam as well.  Glad to read that the Guvnah General's train arrived in good shape.  Train Wreck closed? Zounds!  Hope it's not too serious.

Will try and get back later today but figured I'd get something posted in my usual time slot.

Friday's Grin

Lines To Make You Smile

You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

G'day Gents!

Week's end has arrived, for some reason it's called Friday . . . but no difference here when it comes to our <light> ‘n <traditional> breakfast orders from the Menu Board - or our freshly ground ‘n brewed coffee. Not to forget those tasty pastries in The Mentor Village Bakery case - the pride of Mama ‘n Papa Grundledink! Yeah!! [yeah]

Pete ‘n I have a full day - so I'll not be coming back ‘til this evening - if at all. It's up to YOU to keep "it" going ‘round here . . .

Tell us a bit about the GMA train - for some reason, I'm a bit hazy on it this morning . . . <grin> Is there a link available Question [?]

Juneau's day was hi-lited by a visit from "Uncle" Pete . . . for some reason, dogs ‘n the ladies just luv this guy! <grin> Even gave up "his" room for the Interim Governor General at that! Wow!! [wow]

Meant to mention that I received a response from that fellow who provided so many fine RDC pix on his web site . . . never made mention of coming by, but appreciated the feedback. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained . . . always trying to get some new blood in here. Thumbs Up [tup]

We salvaged the mid-late afternoon ‘n enjoyed a relaxing dinner ‘n remainder of the evening sitting out on the patio . . . I'm even getting better at comprehending what our Bar Chandler is saying - now it's every OTHER word! Wow!! [wow] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Appreciate the visit ‘n chat! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Page 22 - Pete <pwolfe> at 9:44 AM: Pretty good example of what I've been stressing for YEARS ‘round here. One doesn't have to make every Post an all-inclusive Epistle. Even dropping off a handful of lines HELPS. Why is it that some guys just don't "get it" Question [?] Anyway, many thanx to our friend the Wolfman for helping to keep things moving forward at the Bar by the Ballast! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Sorry - this is a family affair with all employees taken well care of. <grin> Don't fall sucker to the Bar Chandler's <mumbling> <grumbling> <malcontent> ain't gonna get any sympathy from Da Bossman! <uh oh> Anyway, I've described in the past where one can find SYMPATHY in the dictionary . . .

That's also a fine looking foto of the freight crossing that wooden trestle in Canada . . . <sweet>

Ahhhhh, the musically inclined. Only wish I could have mastered at least one instrument - just one! Strange how that "works." Late-oldest son picked up his first guitar at Christmastime back when he was a youngster - began strumming discernable tunes before day's end ‘n never looked back. Amazing!

Already enjoying the company of our Interim Governor General! Thumbs Up [tup] This is his "tune up" for bigger ‘n better things to come when he returns to Mother England! <uh oh>

Many thanx for the good cheer, ROUND, fotos ‘n well wishes! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Have a fine weekend yourself, Mate! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Page 22 - Allan <Gunneral> at 10:17 PM <5:17 PM Friday NZ time>: Appreciate the visit from our Resident Downunder Kiwi Boom-boom Connection! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] Another fixture at the bar who we have grown accustomed to . . . Yeah!! [yeah]

The bar we found was every bit as comfortable to spend a couple of hours in as the TrainWreck - in fact, we've pretty much decided to schedule a repeat performance on Pete's next visit with us. <grin> Didn't see any evidence of flooding at the TrainWreck - just a sign on the front door saying they were CLOSED while working to get things back in order.

Funny how things work out - for the original plan was for a friend of mine to drop me off at the train station - then Pete ‘n I were to take a cab over to the TrainWreck . . . with the bride meeting us there for dinner later on. That way, I'd avoid the hazards of driving while under the influence. Something I'm really serious about NOT doing.

Anyway, as it turned out, when it became apparent that Pete's train was going to be late enough to force a change in strategy - I decided to drive to Kirkwood to pick him up - have a couple at the TrainWreck, then come straight home. Amazing how that worked out in our favor. We'd have been ‘stranded' outside a CLOSED Pub - with no automobile had Plan A been followed. So we found Mike Duffy's, a watering hole darned-near within walking distance of home! Never been in the joint before - but surely will again! <grin.

Don't know what to say regarding the immigration issue . . . best to remain "off line" for that, eh Question [?] But am surprised at what you had to say. Didn't know . . .

Many thanx for the good cheer ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Friday - September 19th:

Page 22 - Eric <EricX2000> at 1:04 AM <11:04 PM Thursday Sandbox time>: Not to disappoint us, our Resident NOCTURNAL Desert RETIRED Swede came through with another fine inclusive offering at the late hours! Bow [bow]

Yeah, that book is one I'd like to add to my modest hard cover library - Snowbound Streamliner. Just the kind of title that brings a smile to my aging face! <grin> Could be worse - could be floating around in the ocean in a lifeboat or raft! <yikes> I'd take my chances aboard a stranded train in the snow over that! Thumbs Up [tup]

Disgusting disparity in petrol prices from different regions of the U.S. - you're about 40 cents lower than we, whereas Shane is 40 cents higher than here. Go figure that, eh Question [?] Can't! <barf>

Many thanx for the foto, chat, inclusive comments ‘n support for "Our" Place! Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup]

Each of our personal circumstances are different, so for those who aren't able to communicate from home, it's understandable how W-O-R-K can get in the way! <geesh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Pete had mentioned that you ‘n he are working on arrangements <by Email> to get together next month . . . <envy>

Sounds as if you've been as active as always with your interests . . . don't let any grass grow, Mate! <grin>

Thanx for thinking of us ‘n hope to see ya sooner rather than not! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 22 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8 AM <9 AM EDT>: Great to have our Resident WVA Connection kick things off here at the Saloon by the Siding - gave me some "slack" for the morning "rush." <grin>

Just cannot get "into" foo-ball <yet> - college ball has been "on" for weeks, yet the interest level for me has been zip, zero, zilch for it ‘n the NFL. Hmmmmmm.

Pete ‘n I have agreed that we'll drive from here to WVA for Rendezvous IV. Just gotta get Eric onboard with the idea too . . . I'll "work on him" in November when we visit Phoenix/Grand Canyon. Thumbs Up [tup]

Do appreciate the continuing support, good cheer, chat, ROUND ‘n quarters <phew>!! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks for those words there Tom - I'll have a beer please.

Pretty scary to find I'd been elevated to one of the 'Legion of the Lost' - luckily one of the regulars, in the form of Pete, had been out searching for me. As you've heard we're trying to fix what might be called a 'mini-union' - can't be a re-union as never been done before - Our Place connection - this side of the pond - in the land of Mild Ale no less. No doubt reports back will be posted in the fullness of time.

All the best to all. Good to see CM3 in just fater my early start too.

Hi Tom and all,

Running a bit late (as usual) so it's time for a Bathams please Ruth!

Good to see DL back in the bar and yes, I received your e-mail. Will reply when I get home. Hello as well to Eric, Shane and Nick! Thumbs Up [tup]

Perhaps I should get the Manager's pay . . .

Haven't had time to read through everything as Tom has been running the steamers on the Can-Am Railway. Thumbs Up [tup] Assembled a CN freight with CN power and caboose. Looked great! Thumbs Up [tup]

We're off to the Kirkwood rail museum and have a lovely day to enjoy. Weather has been great!

A round please Ruth, as I must go now. Approve [^]

Good Afternoon Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Today gas bumped down from $4.15 to $4.05 to $3.99 between 8:00 a.m. and noontime.  Guess what price I paid (snargh!) - well, "You can't win if you don't play" as the lottery folks around here say.

Just a quick stop to keep us going.

First, an apology to Allan for leaving him out of my a.m. post.

OSP - I read you're planning a trip to the desert.  Don't know your itinerary, but be aware that steam is being taken out of service on the Grand Canyon Ry.  I am not sure when it'll happen (it may have already).  Also heard that FPA4s are to be removed from service.  I know, Awk, it's always "all about the money."

Fergie - Sounds as though you may be getting "in range" again.

work safe

G'day Gents!

Back at the Saloon by the Siding as Wolfman Pete, the Interim Governor General, departed for Jefferson City aboard Amtrak <on time> at Kirkwood on Friday. Thumbs Up [tup] Was a grand time ‘n good seeing our Resident Brit in Mid-Missouri once again! Bow [bow]

Saturday means time to have a kick-back start to the day. No rush - just fill up your coffee mug, grab a pastry or three while deciding on whether it'll be a <light> or <traditional> breakfast! Thumbs Up [tup]

Comments from the Proprietor

Want to make special mention to ALL who came thru on Friday to keep things perking at the bar whilst Pete 'n I were enjoying things to do 'round here. In spite of our small numnbers, having guys who demonstrate the willingness to help out means very much 'n keeps me wanting to do the things necessary to maintain "Our" Place for US! THANX! Where's ROB Question [?] Well, I received an Email from him - said things at work have been tuff . . . doesn't know when he'll be back. Says to keep the beer cold for him . . .

You probably didn't realize just how HELPFUL your daylite Post was to us - especially since Pete ‘n I were otherwise engaged in things to do. Thumbs Up [tup]

Hope you'll return - soon! Yeah!! [yeah]

Page 22 - Pete <pwolfe> at 12:02 PM: It's Posts JUST LIKE THIS ONE that means very much to "Our" Place. Bow [bow]

Many thanx for the good cheer ‘n of course the business <KaChing> <KaChing> Hope we'll be seeing more of you as you get back in range ‘n then head for home. Bow [bow]

Oh yeah - advance notice: Pete ‘n I have been talking about another visit to Halifax or Gaspé<by train of course> . . . way, way off - but something to think about. Thumbs Up [tup]

Grand Canyon trip will be for the scenery - Carol's never been there <this will be my 3rd time> . . . going to meet up with Eric ‘n his bride in Phoenix . . . trains will be a secondary or tertiary "thing" . . . no plans to spend big bucks riding that excursion train, when we've had so many miles logged aboard REAL trains in DOMES. Of course if the foto ops present themselves, I'll have the camera at-the-ready! <grin> Appreciate the head's up on the steamer ‘n FPA situation . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Good nite's work at your performance - guess the satisfaction comes from witnessing the enjoyment of those getting into the swing of things, eh Question [?] Thumbs Up [tup]

Don't even "go there" with talk of arthritic thumb(s) - both of mine are so <censored> tender that even the thought of striking either with a hammer makes me want to scream obscenities! <yikes>

Pete 'n I got some serious railroading "in" down in the Can-Am Trainroom . . . assembled 'n ran a CN freight with a fine looking Mikado at the head . . . Thumbs Up [tup] <grin> YOU shudda been HERE! Yeah!! [yeah] <fotos next week .  .  .>

Knew a guy or two with pancreatic cancer . . . not good, not good at all. Surely understand your chagrin. Best one can hope for is as painless a departure as possible. Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanx, as always, for your continuing support for this little joint of ours - we've got a fine group - as finest as we've ever had ‘n with you operating even on one cylinder - what more could be asked Question [?] Bow [bow]

Page 22 - Allan <Gunneral> at 8:58 PM <3:58 PM Saturday NZ time>: And from half-way ‘round the world <at the bottom> comes our Resident Downunder Kiwi Boom-boom! Thumbs Up [tup] You surely capped off our Friday quite well - didn't think we'd do so well, given Pete ‘n I spending the daylite portion elsewhere. Thanx! Bow [bow]

Yeah, we had a good time of it - always do. Let things flow - no particular hurry or schedule to maintain. Anyway, once you get to know the Wolfman, one realizes this guy CANNOT be rushed. He says he has two speeds - slow ‘n STOP! I believe it! <grin>

That pub we visited did indeed have an Irish flair to it . . . very nice appointed <some fotos will be Posted next week> . . . friendly crew . . . we'll definitely visit the place again. TrainWreck Saloon is fine, but really a problem when it comes to getting to ‘n from <it isn't that close to home> . . . so this bodes far better-er for us. <grin>

Visited the St. Louis Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood <again> for about 3 hours . . . fine day for it, although there were times when the sun kinda made things a wee bit warm. So, we spent some time in the air conditioned converted rail station enjoying a snack or two . . . <grin> No brew available . . . that came later! Thumbs Up [tup]

There's probably a benefit being an island nation - far easier to ensure control over those desirous of illegally entering . . . not saying it's THAT easy, but with land borders . . . well, say no more, eh Question [?] Again, a subject perhaps better suited for "off-line" comms - never know who gets OH-FEND-ED over this or that while eavesdropping . . .

Pete ‘n I have DECIDED that we must find a way to get YOU to join the gang <in person> for one of our swarays . . . figured it'd be easier for one to make the journey than several. So you've been ELECTED! So, when are you coming Question [?] <grin>

Appreciate, as always, your good cheer ‘n support for the bar - ROUND of Tui didn't hurt a thing either! <grin> Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Hello Cindy! Long time no see! At least a couple of weeks. Yes, coffee and a super sized Cheese Danish, please. Oh, and a large O.J.

Last night the same thing happend again. I couldn't go to/log in to this forum. Just got the same message I got last time, "the server did not respond". I gave up after trying for almost two hours. This morning I took the bride to the airport, she is going to Nebraska for a week.

CM3 –  I am afraid I have never heard any T41 running or idling. I have seen them a number of times, but no engine was running. Three of the five have been preserved. One is meant as spare parts for the other two.

Glad to learn that the gas price is coming down again.Smile [:)]

Tom –   It is amazing how the word “Snowbound” makes you smile! We have discussed that several times before but it is still beyond me that any living person likes snow and cold weather.Confused [%-)]Smile [:)]

3 hours at the Museum of Transportation! Considering all the stuff they have, that is too short time. But since it wasn’t your first (or last) visit I guess it is okay. Wink [;)]

DL –  Nice to see you again even if it’s just for a moment! Smile [:)]

Pete –  Manager’s pay?Question [?] You are always traveling, having fun, isn’t that rewarding enough?Mischief [:-,] Hope you had a nice day at the museum!Smile [:)]

Fergie –  Good to see you , steaming back from the wide ocean! I saw some of your icebergs a couple of weeks ago.Smile [:)]

Nick –  I guess you must have sounded great hitting your thumb with the hammer! It is that little metal pin, the nail, you are supposed to hit. Doesn’t hurt that much.Mischief [:-,]

Allan –  Lingonberries are very good!Dinner [dinner] Check the links for more info.

G'day Gents!

Pleasant suprise from our Sandman with a morning Post at 10:26 AM <8:26 AM Sandbox time>! Perhaps you'll reconsider those late nite submissions in favor of daylite once retired! <hope>

I know that I've mentioned it at the bar, but Kalmbach supposedly does some routine maintenance at the wee hours - thereby making foto Posting difficult and/or logging on. So, my advice to you is to remain logged on - and avoid late, late stuff. That is if you don't want to put up with the aggravation . . .

That foto atop this Post is for YOU, Sandman - just a reminder that as fall arrives in these parts, winter can't be too far behind! Yeah!! [yeah] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Wife's away, eh Question [?] So, did the "brunette" arrive at the same terminal as your departing bride Question [?] I'd be worried about the "timing" of those things, especially since we can no longer depend on depature/arrival times these days <daze>! <uh oh>

I've been browsing the net for a hardbound copy of the Snowbound Streamliner - found few at fifty bucks - and a couple of those were USED! That's a bit steep for my tastes . . . I'll keep looking.

MoT is always enjoyable - first visit back since our last Rendezvous - as the temps get cooler, I plan on going over more often! My membership permits unlimited visits - plus I can take along a guest. Always think that it's a good idea to drop a few bucks into the "kitty" just to show support. It's a great place 'n so well maintained. But, YOU already know that. Thumbs Up [tup]

Your foto spread evokes all kinds of questions. So, perhaps you'll give us a run down on 'em! Thanx . . . Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for stopping by - 'n the ROUND will help things out today as well! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Tom and all.

A cup of coffee and a bacon sarnie please CINDY Thumbs Up [tup].

Back after a great couple of days with Captain [4:-)]Tom, his bride and JuneauThumbs Up [tup].Seeing some of the new steam stock working on the Can-Am was a real treatApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup] , won't say too much about it now asCaptain [4:-)] Tom has taken some photos which I am looking forward to at the barThumbs Up [tup].

Had a good trip back with really good train regulation from the dispatcherBow [bow] passing quite a few freight trains but not having to stopApprove [^], there are a few slow orders but considering how high the Missouri River and its tributaries are it is lucky there was not a lot more delaysYeah!! [yeah]. It was just a 10 minute late arrival in Jeff CityThumbs Up [tup] a lot different from the trip out.Yeah!! [yeah]

I put the puter on last night, but it done its virus check which slows everyting up Banged Head [banghead]so I have not  done my replies yetSigh [sigh]. So I thought I would post a few of Alan's photos and be back later, after I have dug a trench part of the basement modsShock [:O].

The photos are of the pride of the LMS and the LNER,Bow [bow] the first three are of the engines well away from the usual haunts in BR days and were taken on June 1st this year.

The first photo is ex LMS No. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland on Great Western territory at Exeter St Davids.

The next two are of Ex LNER A4 60019 Bittern on the Southern Railway at Yeovil Junction.

It looks a typical English day this year with it rainingSad [:(].

In the photo below, 6233 is very much in her old stomping groundApprove [^] arriving at Crewe from Chester on 17th June. Crewe was where the Duchess was built and she was allocated to the Crewe North engine shed in 1958.

Well CINDY around for those who come in pleaseThumbs Up [tup].

<approaching Gaspé from the dome of the Chaluer - personal foto>

G'day Gents!

Pete's been "in" at 11:19 AM! Thumbs Up [tup]

Doesn't look as if our Wolfman used REFRESH as he apparently "missed" my comments to Eric. I know he'll get it right next time! Approve [^] Hmmm, I don't think the man caught anything of this morning's daylite action! Hmmmm. Yeah, I know - can't read 'n type at the same time. <grin>

Apparently Amtrak & UP did something right - getting you home with only a 10 minute delay ain't bad for that 2 hour run! Thumbs Up [tup] Was a pleasure having you aboard - Juneau just can't figure out where you went! Confused [%-)]

All of those Brit monsters of steam look mighty fine! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] One day you'll just have to relent 'n cash in some of that hoard of bullion stashed deep beneath the house 'n purchase those models <along with a display case!> Yeah!! [yeah]

Appreciate the visit on this normally slow day . . . .

A thought: How BUSY do you think one has to be for even a simple Email to be sent Question [?] Now, that occured to me regarding some unexplained 'n rather long absenses. We spoke of this <several times>. 'tis puzzling to me . . .

Hope the "big dig" goes well - take it easy, Mate - you're closer to 60 than 50! <yikes> That extra large WARM <room temp> tankard of Bathams is for you - once your chores are done! Thumbs Up [tup]

Catch ya later!

Tom Captain [4:-)] Pirate [oX)]

P.S. While browsing the Forums, came upon this thread - scroll through it 'n be sure to read the Genesis of the conversation 'n in particular gbrewer's letter to the new owners of the RR - very informative regarding the discontinuance of steam for the Grand Canyon RR . . . .

Hi Tom and all.

Running lateSigh [sigh] so a round please LEONThumbs Up [tup].

TOM I was surprised at how high the Missouri River was on my trip overShock [:O] I guess we were real lucky as the river was quite low before the heavy rains we hadYeah!! [yeah],if I recall right the news lady said it rose 17 feet in a short span of timeWow!! [wow] considering how wide the Missouri is that is a great deal of water I guess.

Glad you enjoyed the photos from the Ffestiniog railwayThumbs Up [tup], it is great some of their early locomotives are still able to steam and run trains.Bow [bow]

Many thanks for the Passenger Train Nostalgia on the SP's City of San Francisco ad from 1951Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]. I think it would have good to have been able to travel the Overland and the Shasta Daylight to see the views of the High Sierra and Mt. Shastra by daylightApprove [^].

That is a very interesting link to the City of San Francisco of January 1952 being stuck in that blizzard and snow drift on the Donner PassYeah!! [yeah], it is hard to imagine the conditions aboard the train as the water froze and the heating wentSad [:(]. Also the hard work and the danger the crews suffered trying to reach the stranded trainBow [bow].

Was in bit of a hurry this AM, wanted to get the digging done before the sun came round the house but an equipment malfunction put paid to that for a whileBanged Head [banghead] and change of plan for a while. Anyway many thanks for the Bathams it will go down a treatThumbs Up [tup].

That is an interesting, if indeed sad linkSad [:(] to the Trains thread on the Great Canyon RailwayThumbs Up [tup] I thought the letter was very well written,Bow [bow] why is it nowadays when things change hands things rarely get betterThumbs Down [tdn].

NICK I bet that must be a very interesting video on the Bowes RailwayYeah!! [yeah], unfortunately I missed it when it was on TVSigh [sigh]. It was a pity when I visited one time and the rope incline was due to be in operation it could not be used due to the fog there was on that dayBanged Head [banghead], the last I heard the incline was no longer able to be workedSad [:(].

Many thanks for the photos and the details on the Ffestiniog locomotives, coaching stock and the connection to the Welsh Highland in PorthmadogApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. I must admit I prefer Prince in that darker red.Approve [^]

Hope there is no lasting effects from the thumb versus hammer incidentYeah!! [yeah], as an old mate at work used to say "Nice feeling when the pain goes", not that I really understood the sayingSmile [:)].

That is a great collection of coaches behind your DuchessThumbs Up [tup] and a Peak and class 37 double header was one not seen everyday, possibly a Wales Rugby International special with Cardiff shed borrowing a Peak off a cross country train to help out for the trip up to TwickenhamApprove [^]. Looks like a good load for the 3F to take over the MendipsApprove [^]. Really great idea to name a station Kelston Halt on your layout.

Real sorry to hear about your pal in the village, as you say, always the good ones.

ALLAN Thanks for the good wishes for the weather when we are over in the old landThumbs Up [tup], still as long as the trains keep running we shall be OK I guessSmile [:)].

Glad you enjoyed the narrow gauge photos.Thumbs Up [tup]

It was the same with the building back in my old home town, but near where I used to live it could be a lot worse, there was a plan a few years ago about building a massive international airport about 4 or 5 miles away which would have taken nearly all the open fields that are left between where I lived and CoventryShock [:O]Sad [:(], the plan was not carried out.

Yes Tom and I had a great time.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. After we found the TrainWreck saloon closed to flooding we found a bar a lot closer which had a great atmosphere and some good beerApprove [^]. It would indeed have been great to have you there with us.Yeah!! [yeah]Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup]. I see in your reply to Nick that the lingonberries are eatable.Approve [^]

It was good you were near your carThumbs Up [tup] when the Bull Moose decided to chargeShock [:O].

I hope that one of the T41 locomotives can be preserved they look impressive enginesApprove [^]. Many thanks for the photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup] the carriages and the semaphore signal does indeed look British, I agree with Nick I think the passenger car is a Midland Railway design and it looks like a LMS style upper quadrant signal.

Yes Tom and I had a great time at the museumThumbs Up [tup], it is strange we always notice something we had not noticed before when we go there and one of the best Bratwursts I have had for a while.Approve [^]

Enjoyed the photos of the Swedish preserved narrow gauge stockApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], is the locomotive in the last photo a battery powered locomotiveQuestion [?]. Thanks for the link to the lingonberry jam. Thumbs Up [tup]

CM 3 Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup], those Fairlies were a great solution to a way of finding a way for a more powerful locomotive on a narrow gauge lineBow [bow].

That sounds bad news about the motive power on the GCRSad [:(] that is a great link on the GCR that Tom posted

DL Great to see you in the barApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Looking forward to your report of the steam powered bus and the rest of your travelsYeah!! [yeah]. I believe Stathes is where there was a very high steel viaduct on the Robin Hood's Bay lineQuestion [?]. 1.50 sounds good price for a pint,Approve [^] I dare say I will be in for a shockShock [:O] when I find what the beer prices are if they have gone up a lot in the last 2 years.Yeah!! [yeah]

FERGIE Great to see you back as wellApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. The keg of Keith's has been in the cellar awaiting your returnSmile [:)].

Well LEON seeing as I missed H&H's Fish 'N' Chips this weekSad [:(] I had better have the Steak and Trimmings Dinner [dinner] Approve [^]with a Bathams to wash it downThumbs Up [tup]. I had better leave a round in for the Track GangYeah!! [yeah] after seeing the good work they have done keeping the Can-Am track in great conditionBow [bow].

Saw you "peeking in" as I prepared this on Sunday morning <8 AM or so> . . . Can't stay away, ehQuestion [?] See - if a guy WANTS to - a guy CAN find a WAY! Thumbs Up [tup] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Received your Email ‘n responded - thanx! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good point on when things change hands, they rarely get better. It's all about the money <as Shane likes to say> ‘n in this case, it surely seems the new owners of the Grand Canyon Railroad have demonstrated it "loud ‘n clear." <barf> See comments below to Allan . . .

Yes, rivers are running high for this time of year. As the fall ‘n winter months approach, most times the levels drop to where commercial navigation is out of the question. But this has been an extremely odd year for rainfall ‘n methinks we're not done yet. And yes, a 17 foot rise is quite a bit of water. Fortunately with the speed of the current, it's pretty much "here ‘n gone" - nothing to fool with. Very dangerous to take for granted while recreating . . . many people are oblivious to the hazards.

I'm "weakening" with regard to the purchase of that Snowbound Streamliner . . . found a couple of gift certificates for amazon.com - just may cash ‘em in for the book! <grin> My library has become a "thing" . . . does this interest in railroading EVER stop Question [?] Yeah - when one is "planted," but not until! <grin>

Many thanx for the return visit, chat ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 23 - Allan <Gunneral> at 10:07 PM <5:07 PM Sunday>: And our good friend from DownUnder arrived to help keep things moving forward at the Tavern by the Tracks! Bow [bow]

Certainly made my mouth water when you mentioned cranberries with turkey! <ummmmmm> In fact, we're having a turkey dinner today - I'm ready Dinner [dinner]! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Yeah, one of these days <daze> I'll win the Lottery - but first I've got to purchase a ticket! <grin> <uh oh> If wishes were horses, Mate . . . Just go ahead ‘n cash in that stash you've hidden in that "sock" . . . you remember the one started when you were doing service in the army. <grin>

That outfit involved with the purchase of the Grand Canyon Railroad is the same one we booked our Grand Canyon hotel reservations with. Seems they've got a "lock" on that area when it comes to places to say ‘n things to do. Anyway, in reading that letter within the link I provided, it surely seems that the new ownership is clutching at straws to come up with a reason to scrap those steamers. <barf> Glad we're NOT booked on the train - I'm really not ‘into' excursion trains - but every now ‘n then try one, but ONLY if it's not a rip-off in terms of price ‘n time aboard. The dome car prices for two on the GCR were outrageous for such a short haul. Nope. Especially when we have logged many, many hours aboard scheduled trains <aka: REAL> at prices far more realistic given the miles accrued ‘n amenities offered.

Can't say Mike Duffy's Pub is just like Pete's favorite place in JCity . . . but we found it somewhat more friendly than the TrainWreck Saloon ‘n a good "fit" for the couple of hours we spent there. You'd have enjoyed it - I just KNOW you would have! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Many thanx for the visit ‘n ROUND of Tui! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Well good evening one and all-I trust the weekend has treated you all well ..?-

As the bar is officially closed for the evening, those wishing a quiet pint (on my tab naturally) will have to sneak in through the back door-help yourselves to what you want and go and grab a seat in the snug/members lounge-we have yet another re-run of the Titfield Thunderbolt tonight unless anybody wants to watch something else,in which case-be my guest........the tapes are all in the rack.......I will be out in the galley preparing for Brit Breakfast morning-as a one-off special (and to give Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM a well earned lie-in) I thought we might try some classic breakfast dishes -everything from the "full English" -bacon,sausage,black pudding, fried egg, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried slice, toast & marmalade and at least 3 pints of tea-the "traditional"-like the above but includes Kedgeree and grilled kidneys, the "Continental"-cafe-au-lait with croissants and jam,the "Keith Richards"-VERY black coffee, half a bottle of `Jack` and a pack of Marlboro`s---or just the traditional bacon/sausage/egg buttie permutations..........Or for the real hardliners-PORRIDGE-with your choice of sweetener-opinion is currently divided within the band as to the merits of clover honey and maple syrup...........

Right then-lets get to it-gonna try and catch up on post tonight and also sling in a few pix-very few of trains, just a general meander showing what a beautiful place I am lucky enough to live in.........

Here is one, just to start us off-

img{gigtrains145.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Well-this is the view from right here-this was a test shot of the new batteries in the camera and is the left hand end of my guitar rack-the other 6 are off to the right....is a touch of gloating, having learned my chops on instruments that most self respecting players would use as fire-lighters...

And going out from the house and down to the river:-

img{gigtrains146.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Here we are at twilight on a very still evening with an 8.3 metre tide at Edwards pill-normally the boat would be high and dry

And first comment-

Allan-I`m sure Opel used to market a mid-size saloon called the `Commodore `over here...the old cars-not sure of the makes but the yellow one reminds me of `Bessie`-the car used by Doctor Who during the Tom Baker incarnation Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]-

Have just spent most of the evening watching the greatest advert for your adopted home ever made-Peter Jacksons astonishingly good " Lord of the Rings"-man,it looks just like Wales..!!!!

ERIC-Would be fascinated to know more about that little train Approve [^]-lovely shot of that Amtrak electric-has a definate `continental` look to it.......

next pic....

img{gigtrains150.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Looking down river-this fails to show just how high the water is,unless you know the location

img{gigtrains151.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

This was taken walking round to the next location-am a sucker for a vivid pastel coloured skyline......

next comment

DAN-Sounds like you have had some interesting trips out mate-looking forward to hearing about them-£1.50 a pint-I`ll have some of that action-indeed,is about time I took the camera on a trip out-if you could use a third party for yor meet with PETE just let me know......

img{gigtrains152.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

img{gigtrains153.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

img{gigtrains154.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Here are a few shots from further round the pill-normally the water is a bare trickle at the bottom of the frame....

SHANE-Thanks for the pic confirm Thumbs Up [tup]-Time management is something I am going to have to get used too ......-glad the station name meets with general approval......

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Fridays `grin` very close to mark..as to music & #1 son-have concluded that you either can or you can`t-consider myself blessed in that I can-from very early on I was able to `pick out` pieces that I had no right knowing-Rodriguez guitar concerto for example...also more or less all of Jimi Hendrix`s bass lines ( an eclectic mix I agree-but ALL music was new to me then...)....As you suggest, half the fun of a good gig is the audience response-doesn`t matter if you miss a few notes here and there-when you finish the night and the person who is paying you is mad for it and the crowd are baying for more is very difficult not to feel very pleased with yourself........On the other note--We will give Kenny the send off he deserves-and be there when he needs us.....nuff said

A train at last.....

img{gigtrains157.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

We had Elisabeth down for a few days recently-this was her train-not sure about the turqouise livery but is far more interesting than the old `rail blue`

PETE-Delighted you had a good time `up north` -gotta establish some regular freight workings in Can-Am country (Whistling [:-^])

And a good day out at the Kirkwood museum-full marks there as well Thumbs Up [tup]

img{gigtrains162.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Doing the tourist thing in Newport-a lovely little town with a long history (remains date back to a 6000 year old settlement) -a strong choice for the desmesne of the Celtic Chieften Pwyll, king of Dyfed ( see classic Celtic literature )

Right-a couple more pix and its bed time for me......

img{gigtrains168.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Here we are on the beach at Newport-small Hannah has been digging up the black volcanic sand (and getting filthy dirty in the process.....Approve [^]....) behind Missisnicks head is Carn Ingli-an ancient burial site and behind Elisabeths` head is Cas Blaidd <cas blai-th>-the Wolf Rock-about 20 miles away -possibly an ancient fortress (but no-one knows for sure)

Right-only about halfway through notes but I hear the siren song of the pillow (plus some frankly impolite suggestions from herself) so I will love and leave you all-will try to complete catch up tomorrow-regards to all ,sleep well

Chef [C=:-)]

Hello,

My name is Jim and I live in Connecticut. I just put something on your photo site and thought you would like to know that this thread of yours is an outstanding place to learn and become reacquainted with Classic Trains. Very impressed with the knowledge that thrives here, from all over the world!

I am one of those "silent types" who does a lot of browsing, but very little talking. So, just let me congratulate all of you for the material that has kept me interested for well over a year.

Figured it was way past due time for me to come to the "surface." I am a retired submariner!

Please do not be offended if I do not return in the near future. As I mentioned, I am more of a browser than anything else, BUT always find the time to stop here and at your (Tom) photo site. I really prefer the no-nonsense aspect of it all, but do enjoy the way you guys get along with one another. Well done to the man you call Captain Tom!

Jim
