Good evening gents,

Sorry I can't stop.  Popped in just to see who was here. Laugh [(-D]

Re Welsh station names, Well I am alive and I can pronounce it.  I learned it in 1953 - which is a long while ago.

 Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

The longest town name in the world means "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".

The Wisbech Tramway carried mainly fruit and produce from the Fenland fields.  It was a pretty unique system and the line was very flat with virtually no grades.  As it was classed as a tramway and ran, in parts, on public roads the cowcatcher was a government regulation.

Oh. yes.  Thanks for the Milwaukee Road page .  That's one of my US railroads on my models.

Well good evening gentlemen all ,Leon-a quick short for all please whilst we take a minute to consider not only what happened on this day,but also all the other times when innocent passers by became victims ...................................thank you

Right then-just back from band night, and my word was it loose and funky-more Little Feat than James Brown-and none the worse for that Approve [^]-this show is definately ready for the road.....

So-to business:-

ERIC-good to have you back mate-hope you enjoyed your travels.....Thumbs Up [tup]-nice pix of the class `B`-I`m assuming that the valve gear is inside the frames..??-keep it near the boiler and the radiant heat keeps everything running loose and easy.......

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Everything changes mate-all the time-I dare not go back to the old village `cos it won`t be the place I left-last I heard,I ran into a bunch of tourists down from there (about 10 years ago) and a kid I remember being born was then the head barman in the local pub-where I used to work a generation before.......

The new job is not a worry-have always worked in the service industry, this time I dont have to get 40-60 meals ready 3 times a day-just answer the phone and wrap books......... I can live with this        Whistling [:-^]

SHANE-completely agree-N.G itis is a devious disease-one moment you are cutting timber for a basement full of main line trackage, before you know it you have assembled a 3 ft cube of a North Wales quarry with lines on 5 levels, various lifts between levels and you are downloading articles about exactly what wet slate or rusted rails look like and how to reproduce a waterfall in 3.5mm scale and where to get genuine slate fragments from...............

The `company` image mentioned earlier is mid green panels with yellow trim and doors and white window frames-will get a couple of pix together-

ROB-Beware the evils of drink-also the even greater evil of mixing with the boys in the band Whistling [:-^]  -as to clothes,denims,T-shirts and leathers have always worked for me-black or dark blue for preference-even in black suits I look like a head transplant victim......what ya gonna do ??

A weird pic of the dome car with the cast offs...

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-a very nice piece on the `Golden State`-

PETE-Again you have the better of me-was the first time on that line-no idea whether that was the original terminus----sorry

Now then-Peter Sam-the engines on the `Skarloey ` railway featured in several books-I will need to go and raid Hannah`s bookshelf for my Rev Awdry Compendium before I can come back to you on that one.

Russell-last contact I had with one of the W.H.R mob ,they were hoping to have Russell back for the grand opening...we shall see

Sounds like the Darjeeling engine is the one I thought it was-will load in pix of the Westerns as soon as I have a moment to myself Thumbs Up [tup]-can`t beat the old Ian Allen combined volumes Approve [^]-I believe the "permanently attached tenders` were 5 plank wagons with the ends knocked out

ALAN-A pint of guinness for you for spotting the correct translation of Llanfair P.G-full marks mate Thumbs Up [tup]-and another pint for extra detail on the Wisbech & Upwell-good call mate Thumbs Up [tup]

Right-thats me for tonight, see you all soon, take care now.......

Good evening Captain Tom and all present!!

Leon, still awake! Yes, a cold Tui, please.

A busy day. Tonight I watched a lot of TV. It was all about what happened 7 years ago. Made me think about the WTC attack 1993. That was when Amtrak had the X2000 in revenue service between Washington and NYC. I saw the smoke that time. 7 years ago I was home from work, sick and watched TV all day.

Tom –  No, Rendezvous IV is still on my agenda and I don’t plan to remove it. Just hope the gas price is a bit lower then. Maybe we can discuss the travel plans in November when you are in town! Smile [:)]

Two seats to yourself on long flights is worth a lot.Thumbs Up [tup] Much more room for everything and can go to the bathroom anytime! No pillow when flying first class doesn’t sound right.Grumpy [|(] They actually had pillows in economy class last Sunday when I flew from Chicago to Phoenix. United Airlines.

Yes, today is/was a tragic day. I remember like yesterday when it happened. Was sick and saw when the second plane hit WTC live and heard when the plane hit Pentagon. A reporter was reporting from Pentagon when it happened. I spent a couple of hours in front of the TV tonight watching a lot of videos from that day.

I am afraid I need a name on what is missing on that locomotive. A good try though! 1/3 correct!Wink [;)]

Interesting SP ad!Thumbs Up [tup] Palm Springs looked different then, in the early 50’s!Smile [:)]

CM3 –  Parts of the valve gear is missing, but so is another part that is more obvious in my opinion. But I’ll give you 1/2 right answer, free drinks the rest of this week and weekend! Sunday you have to come in through the back door. Boris will let you in. Oops [oops]

Rob –  Correct answer!Thumbs Up [tup] Most obvious is the connecting rod! That locomotive was in running condition until a few years ago but when it was sent to this place, a former railroad station, they removed the connecting rods and parts of the valve gear to make it possible to haul it in a freight train. And for whatever reason they have not put back those parts yet. Free drinks from now until next Wednesday evening!Smile [:)]

Very nice photos!Thumbs Up [tup] That Budd car looks great but still it is in the wrong place with those “R” cars. The RS23 looks brand new. Nice paint job!Smile [:)]

Pete –  Very good answer!Yeah!! [yeah] This is getting kind of tricky. Hmmm. I guess the best thing to do is to let you all have free drinks from now until the end of the weekend!Wink [;)]

Camera on your plane going to UK? If you have a screen in the back of the seat in front of you and it is an Airbus, there may be cameras. Check it out! I don’t know if Boeing has that alternative on their new planes.Smile [:)]

I wonder how you run a locomotive as a spaceship?Confused [%-)]

I would love to hear somebody say that name, Llanfair-something.Wow!! [wow]

Alan –  Hmm, I wonder if you spelled that name correct? Hmmm. I think there is one l too many. Oops [oops]

Nick –  No, sir the valve gear is partly missing like the connecting rod.Wink [;)] Yes, I enjoyed my trip to the old country, but as I mentioned earlier this week, flying is no fun nowadays.Sigh [sigh]

Two photos.

Same class B as last night. The former station building to the left.

A typical grade crossing in Sweden.

Hi folks,

Regarding the spelling of that looooooooooooooong name.  I checked with the four web pages I Googled and they all five four L's.  Anway no one ever says it as we all know.  It's just Llanfair PG.

Just quick visit.  I have to assist at a funeral in an hours time.  Dear old soul of 95 years.  RIP.

G'day Gents!

41 months ago on this day, "Our" Place was founded as a cyber bar ‘n grill for adults who enjoy sharing info on Classic Trains while having some fun doing it. We've had many pass through our doorways <we have 2 sets!> some we'll fondly remember - others not. Some very interactive - others not. Some genuine in personality, acts ‘n deeds - others not. Here's to those who gave <'n give> a Rat's Patoot about this Tavern by the Tracks, especially our current crew! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Wow!! [wow] Yeah!! [yeah] <clink> ALL DRINKS ON THE HOUSE TODAY for our Gang of Regulars! Bow [bow]

Breakfasts are being prepared in our galley for those who enjoy a <light> or <traditional> pick-me-up before heading off to work or play! Our coffee is freshly ground ‘n brewed ‘n our pastries in The Mentor Village Bakery case are mouth watering . . . check ‘em out! Thumbs Up [tup]

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Thursday - September11th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 19 - Alan <Great Western> at 5:05 PM <11:05 PM GMT>: A most surprising but welcome visit from an interesting fellow in the UK! Thumbs Up [tup]

Can't classify the man as a customer - therefore no <tweeting> for Rules Violations! However, he has been OH-FISH-UL-LEE welcomed in the past, therefore "qualified" to spend some bucks at the bar! <grin>

You may want to remember that Wednesday is our OP-SHUN-UL Toy ‘n Model Trains Day! at the bar - ‘n since you are a modeler, we'd surely enjoy contributions from your corner of the world! Thumbs Up [tup]

Always appreciate having you with us! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Page 19 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 7:04 PM <1:04 AM Friday GMT>: And another visit from a man in the UK, very much appreciated ‘n in keeping with the spirit of the way we do things ‘round here! Yeah!! [yeah]

Band being ready for the road means an absence from the bar . . . Hmmmmm, that won't do! <grin> Please keep in mind that an Email would really be appreciated regarding planned extended absences - surely helps in planning ‘round here. Bow [bow]

Can't ‘n won't "jump in" on the pronunciations in your part of the world. Boggles my feeble mind just to try ‘n read the words! <yikes> What was WRONG with those people who created that "tongue" Question [?] <grin>

ANY foto of a VIA Rail observation dome car is a PLUS - in spite of it being attached to those funky Chunnel Chuggers <aka: Renaissance>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

My compliments on a fine inclusive offering along with your generosity in filling our glasses! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

Friday - September 12th:

Page 19 - Eric <EricX2000> at 2:05 AM <12:05 AM Sandbox time>: Yeah, that trip to Alaska was an all ‘round great experience - a special vacation for our 15th anniversary <a couple of months in advance>. The "pillow" thing didn't really diminish the whole of it - but surely would've expected better for the amount of money put out for 1st class . . . that was the point in my telling the story. That airline has gone from "class act" to an embarrassment in my humble OH-PIN-YUN.

Yes, we'll surely discuss our travel plans for Rendezvous IV when we get together in November in the Sandbox! <grin>

Connecting rod! Why in the world the term didn't come to me is baffling - chalk it up to a senior moment. Having ‘em more ‘n more these daze . . . <uh oh>

I didn't "connect" 1993 with the first attempt at the World Trade Center . . . yeah, you were on tour, fer sure, fer sure. I saw you in St. Louis with THAT brunette, remember???? <caught!>

We purchased two very well put together volumes on the tragedy called 911 . . . the photos are so vivid that one relives that horrible day in front of the tube again ‘n again. People jumping from windows to their death - planes about to hit the towers - rescuers entering the buildings, some never to be found again in the rubble of the fallen buildings. All of it - the Pentagon - the field in Pennsylvania - captured forever on film. ‘nuf said . . . aside from my hope that there is a place WORSE than Hades where those responsible are suffering an eternity of anguish.

A nice, inclusive offering from our Sandman - but you MISSED something! Hmmmm - think about it!

Appreciate your continuing support ‘n business! Thumbs Up [tup] <KaChing> <KaChing>

Page 19 - Alan <Great Western> at 4:34 AM <10:34 AM GMT> Encore! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Clear here this morning with temps in the 50s.  Bought some $3.85 "bargain" gas on the way to work this a.m.  Can't wait to see what it'll be next week.

Now to the stack of stuff.

Rob was in with comments - am glad to see that your picture machine is working again.

Pete - Thought you'd enjoy that site - he keeps adding to it.

Alan - Hello, again - thanks for information on Llanfair.

Nick - Mittle Feat and James Brown in the same sentence?  Whoda thunk it.

Eric - Free drinks for being 1/2 right?  I like it!  Interesting setup at the grade crossing.  Are most of them like that in populated areas?

OSP - Appreciated the rerun of GS material.  I thought you'd enjoy the site - did you take a look at the RDCs in Pittsburgh and the CN RDC.  Your remark about Channel Chuggers kicked something forward in what's left of the brain cells.  There was a fire yesterday in the Channel tunnel.  Freight train.  People were evacuated out through the third tunnel.  That was all they said on CNN - no mention of it after that.  Good luck with the basement.

Will try and get back later.

work safe

HAPPY 41st MONTHLY ANNIVERSARY

to "OUR" PLACE and CURRENT CREW!

Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Yeah!! [yeah] Wow!! [wow] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!!

Ruth my deAH, your radiance is omnipresent - Wow!! [wow] did I say thatQuestion [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Anyway, great to be back at the bar for a special day! The Forty First month of "Our" Place is definitely a celebraSHUN in the making! Bow [bow] Set up the bar on the Senior Manager ‘n let me take care of the tab for the food, as I see Da Bossman is providing free drinks on this day! Yeah!! [yeah]

Boris - time to feed those crittAHs! Awk gets the tray of seeds - Frostbite the bucket of ice cubes - Spike gets the tree bark - Tex is waiting for his saucer of brine  - Artie is ready to devour a field mouse <OUTSIDE!> ‘n of course Juneau a chew bone! After that - YOU get the LARGE jar of pickled pig's feet! <phew> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

A toast to the boyz at the bar AND to our most illustrious leadAH, Cap'n Tom - our most dedicated and tireless man at the helm! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

I see that three regulAHs have dropped by since the midnight hour, but only ONE has made mention of our MONTHLY ANNIVERSARY. Looks as if what Cap'n Tom has been saying still holds true. The 12th still goes by unrecognized. The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh Question [?]

Yesterday was a most somber day for me as a group of us attended the ceremonies at the site of the towers over in Manhattan. Very sobering, very sad and very remindful of the struggle ahead. There is no winning this until the vermin are eradicated from the face of the earth.

What has this to do with trains Question [?] Well, I guess there is a connection in that the trains are running again at the site as we caught glimpses of the new Path trains and terminal being constructed.

Cap'n Tom, you'd love the new ferries. Nothing like those from when you boarded ‘em regulAHly. What used to cost a nickel is now a FREE ride. Remember when you could take your carQuestion [?] No more, just passengers. Still one of the best 25 minute "sea" journeys around. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Here's a URL you might enjoy. Lots of places to "go" and lots of things to reminisce about too. This one is a ferry that is very special . . . it was "our" boat for one of the trips.

http://www.siferry.com/Current_Ferries.aspx

I see NOTHING has changed - we were shut down at SIXTY THREE, but others are STILL up ‘n running with far, far more than that. Wasn't I "called" on that some time ago by the Lock MastAHQuestion [?]

Sorry to see that youse guyz weren't able to find a place to relocate. Maybe something will come along. I did receive the e-mails, although my frequency of checking ‘em is rather poor. <ooooooooops> Thumbs Up [tup]

Haven't really spent a great deal of time online lately, but of course have been looking in. I don't log in, just to keep Da Bossman's blood pressure DOWN! I know he gets rather irritated seeing any of us logged in but not posting. So the idea is to NOT log in until ready to post! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] <gotcha Boss!>

In scrolling through about a dozen or more pages, I see that the group has remained rather steady in terms of numbers, although there's been quite a few periods where very little <except for Cap'n Tom> has been posted. Good to see the "core" sticking togethAH! Bow [bow] Picked up on Pete ‘n Tom getting together <again>. Do you suppose Pete is trying to turn the man into a Brit Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Eric in Sweden, Allan in Australia ‘n Pete soon off to the UK. Are you a far-flung lot or what Question [?] Oh yeah, CM3 I'm NOT Shane in West Virginia - that's a far flung place too, dontchano! <grin> And of course, can't forget Rob up in Ontario where for whatever the reason he seems to think is heaven. <grin>

Must make comment on the outstanding material being provided by youse guyz! Bow [bow] I have enjoyed the photos, makes it far easier for we reading-challenged types! <grin> Anyway. Pete has a never-ending source from his friend who seemingly lives to ride trains. Not a bad life! Then there's Eric with his random ‘n most interesting "stuff." The man who got rolled over by a trolley <but didn't realize it>, Rob -  keeps on keeping on too! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Gotta make mention of our man in west Wales, Nick too - for he comes up with all sorts of interesting material in visuals from his part of the world! Thumbs Up [tup] Gotta say that the hand's down winnAH for the "best in show" goes to our Cap'n! Wow!! [wow] Where in the world do you get the time to come up with the things you do Question [?] Personal travel pix - railroad advertisements - great series of things, it just doesn't stop. Way to go, mate! Bow [bow] And I did pick up on the locomotives you purchased. Like those B&O steamers, nice selection! Thumbs Up [tup] I just gotta find a way to visit that train room of yours. Wow!! [wow]

The idea of this contact with the bar is to help celebrate the occasion. So what bettAH way than a visit from the Larsman Mobile Question [?] Wow!! [wow] Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

No abuse of the RULE OF SIX intended. However, as Senior Manager, I'm exerting my privilege extended to me by Da Bossman to "go for it"! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think that's "it" for now! Hope y'all enjoyed the spread . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Ruth, I'll be waiting "you know where" to help you with the <ahem> admin work! <blush>

Ring the gong, Boris - set ‘em up! Bow [bow]

Until the next time! Thumbs Up [tup]

G'day Gents!

Well, well - the Larsman returned with a super-fine spread of book covAHs for the gang on the occasion of our 41st Monthly Anniversary! Bow [bow]

Great having our Senior Manager <Emeritus>on board! Thumbs Up [tup]

A tad hard on the boyz though - for I doubt that either of ‘em <Sandman or Shane> deliberately failed to recognize this day - just a matter of not reading 'n connecting with the daily reminders . . . happens.

Anyway, good to see Lars, Shane ‘n Rob come in during the daylite! Bow [bow]

Springs me loose for this from our sub-basement archives room . . .

Hi Tom and all.

Happy B-Day [bday]41st anniversary to Our Place the best bar in the etherBow [bow]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Well RUTH Eric is buying my beer until the end of the weekendThumbs Up [tup], Tom is getting the beers todayApprove [^] and Senior Manager Lars is inBow [bow], so keep the Bathams and Holden's comingThumbs Up [tup].

TOM Great toast for today.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good news you have found someone who is willing to tackle the basement how you want it to be doneThumbs Up [tup]. That is the method we had done with the front wall, which is totally underground, and there is no sign of leakage along that wall in our basement where there was a fair bit before we had it done.

I must admit has I got older I really learnt to appreciate the narrow gauge and the industrial railway scene.Bow [bow]

It is really good those timetables from back in the day survived,as you say, it would be greatto have a look through them Yeah!! [yeah]. I am always up for a visit to the Barriger LibraryThumbs Up [tup].

Yes there really is some great material in the back pages of Our Place.Bow [bow]

G.W, ALAN Thanks for the translation of the Llanfair PG nameThumbs Up [tup]. Reading it reminded me of where I had seen the translation before. In the late 1950s or early 1960s BR had a small kiosk on the seafront at Rhyl where we used to holiday. They used to advertise local excursions and cheap tickets, they also produced a small booklet with timetables and a guide to the places in the area and the piece about Llanfair was in the booklet. Like Tom and I discussed about old timetables etc that booklet would be very interesting to read todayYeah!! [yeah].

Thanks for the info on the Wisbech Tramway as well.Thumbs Up [tup]

Pride of the Great Western No. 6024 King Edward I leaves the sidings at Tyseley, Birmingham.

NICK I did not know the Llanberis Lake had extended their line until I was looking at their timetable on their web site and got confusedConfused [%-)], there was a map and it showed the line   terminating opposite the Snowdon Mountain Railway, or so it appeared.

If I see any thing in the mags about Russell's overhaul I will put it up at the barThumbs Up [tup].

It would be good to see a photo of those Y9sYeah!! [yeah], I had a look and in 1958 there still was a handful still running, it seemed most of them was allocated to shed 65E KIPPS, which was under the control of 65A Glasgow Eastfield. I'm afraid I know nothing about the shed at KippsAshamed [*^_^*].

ERIC I did have a screen in the back of the seat on one of my flights, I think the plane was a 777. I would not be surprised if the one I am going to England on has pedals connected to propellers and a relative of H&H with a whipShock [:O] in economy class.Big Smile [:D]

I think the drivers worked the 9F spaceships fast when they could, a speed of over 90MPHWow!! [wow], when one took over the Flying Scotsman express after a loco failure, was recordedBow [bow]. The 9Fs only had 5 foot driving wheelsShock [:O].

Come over with us and we will go to North Wales and get someone to say that long nameThumbs Up [tup]Smile [:)].

Many thanks for the photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]; I guess those barriers are effective protecting the overhead wires on the grade crossing.

CM3 Yes I will visit the photo site againThumbs Up [tup]. Great to see the American rail scene in the 1960sApprove [^], and I felt a bit nostalgic seeing a time when the Gatwick Express was just starting up and the Deltics were still to be seen at King's Cross.

Another Our Place coincidenceAlien [alien]. Just reading your post about the fire in the Channel Tunnel when BBC local radio reported on it. It seems it took 16 hours to put out.

ROB Many thanks for the photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Those Geeps are interesting and powerful looking locomotives.Approve [^]

LARS Great to see you in the bar againThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup], I will enjoy the steak tonight, thanksApprove [^].

Many thanks for the link to the Staten Island Ferries. That is a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives, The Spirit Of America.  There are some great Lithographs on the site as well.

Glad you are enjoying the photosThumbs Up [tup], I'm a new man since I got my scannerSmile [:)]. Yes you will have to visitCaptain [4:-)] Tom's layout and a call in at the TrainWreck SaloonYeah!! [yeah]; I am looking forward to seeing the new steamers and cabooses next weekThumbs Up [tup].

It is great to see the book covers from the Larsman MobileApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Great Alcos on the Spokane one and the Morris County Traction Limited looks an interesting read, as does the Tri State Traction bookYeah!! [yeah]. I think that is a ‘Jones Goods' 4-6-0 on the Highland Liveries.

Hope you are able to call in again soonThumbs Up [tup], RUTH and the Mascots are not the same without you aroundYeah!! [yeah].

Well RUTH this is getting a tad longSigh [sigh] so another Holden's while I post this, read Tom's Burlington post and load some photos.Thumbs Up [tup].

Hi Tom and all.

Back again RUTHThumbs Up [tup] the free beer it is hard to resistSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

TOM Many thanks for the Fallen Flag on the Burlington RouteThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]. I see the BN still had 10 steam locomotives in 1963Approve [^],which I guess was quite late for a class 1 railroad. I see what you meant about some of the Zephyr named trainsYeah!! [yeah], The Morning Zephyr and the Afternoon Zephyr served different destinations from ChicagoConfused [%-)]. I think the Exposition Flyer is one of the most attractive drumheads there was.Approve [^]

Is that cheering I hearQuestion [?], it must be because it is time for the next 10 Western names.Smile [:)]

1021 WESTERN CAVALIER

1022 WESTERN SENTINEL

1023 WESTERN FUSILIER

1024 WESTERN HUNTSMAN

1025 WESTERN GUARDSMAN

1026 WESTERN CENTURIAN

1027 WESTERN LANCER

1028 WESTERN HUSSAR

1029 WESTERN LEGIONNAIRE

1030 WESTERN MUSKETEER

After the names I had better post some photosSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]. These were taken near my old home at Rugby. The first one is a class 60 diesel-electric No. 60085 ‘Axe Edge' heading north over the River Avon Bridge with an empty stone train; this was the site of water troughs in steam days. The 60 has the Trainload Construction sector markings on the side of the loco.

Before the 60s took over the working of this train a pair of class 37s worked it, if the wind was right the sound of the 37s could be heard for many miles at my old houseApprove [^].

Looking the other direction, with the Parkfield Road bridge in the background. a class 87 electric works an Inter City train. The 87s were introduced in 1973 to coincide with the extension of the West Coast Electrification northwards from Weaver junction(north of Crewe) to Glasgow they were the main express passenger power until being taken over by the Pendolinos.

The other side of the Parkfield Road bridge on the path that leads to 'Ticklebelly Tunnels', of bat fameBig Smile [:D]; is another West Coast electric class with a long and succesful career, a class 86 on an Intermodel train. The 86s were introduced in 1965 and I believe there are still a handful still in service with FreightLiner.Bow [bow]

A class 47 diesel-electrc on a short freight. The 47s were introduced in 1963 and the there were 512 of the class built. The 47 has Railfreight Distribution Sector markings.

A single class 87 was fitted with Thyristor control and this was numbered 87101 seen here on a train of new autos.87101 gained the name Stephenson which was first fitted to 87001.

Well RUTH keep the free beer flowingApprove [^] and I'll have Lar's Steak and Fries Dinner [dinner] now please.Thumbs Up [tup].

Good afternoon Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Hello Leon, you look kind of tired! No, I'll have a sugar cured ham sandwich on rye, please. A free Tuborg Gold to that!

Happy 41st Monthly Anniversary! Yeah!! [yeah]Bow [bow]Wow!! [wow]Cowboy [C):-)]

Another busy day in the desert. I have decided to post my catch up post on Sunday. I'll drop it in the mail slot.

Alan –  I believe you.Smile [:)] I just thought that no one possibly could spell a name like that correctly. I would lose track of where I was after typing half of it.Wink [;)]

Tom –  Thanks for the drinks! Bow [bow]

We all have senior moments, I have them several times every day.Confused [%-)]

Now I remember, we (the brunette and I) saw that guy standing in the corner watching us at St. Louis Union Station. He actually looked a lot like you! Hmm. It was in June 1993! Mischief [:-,]

Did I miss something?Question [?] Hmm, now I am very confused. Doesn’t take much to get me to that point.Confused [%-)] Hmm. Let’s see... no, I am afraid I need a hint.

Interesting facts on Burlington!Thumbs Up [tup] including a nice looking book cover, The Pioneer Zephyr! They certainly had quite a few Zephyrs running in all directions.

I like the Exposition Flyer drumhead!

Museum of Transportation, Kirkwood, MO.

CM3 –  Yes, most grade crossings are set up the same way as in my photo. The gates usually goes all the way across the street/road. Smile [:)]

Rob –  Do you pay the bills?Wow!! [wow] It just cost a lot of money.Mischief [:-,]

Three nice photos of some veteran diesels!Thumbs Up [tup] Algoma Central and Agawa canyon, what province? Question [?]

Lars –  Nice to see you again, sir! I agree 100% about yesterday (911) being a very somber day. Watched the History Channel for a few hours. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

My trip to Sweden is over and I am back in the desert. We had some bad dust storms yesterday evening.Smile [:)]

Nice collection of book covers from Larsman’s Moblile! Especially one book looks very interesting, Morris County Traction Company. Looks like a streetcar on the run in the middle of the forest. Smile [:)]

I did not mention the montly anniversary in my post last night because for me it was still yesterday and I wanted to save it until this afternoon when everyone is awake (hopefully). With only Leon and me present and awake there isn’t much celebration going on.Wink [;)]

Pete –  I have never been in a 777. Would love to fly one sometime in the future. Pedals? I wouldn’t be surprised. Each set of peadals could be hooked up to a generator to generate electric power that could be used for outside propellers helping the plane during take off. Good idea! Mischief [:-,]

90 MPH with 5’ drivers, that is pretty good. Fly to North Wales? Hmm, I think I have had enough of flying for this year now. Wink [;)]

The overhead barriers at the grade crossings are not very sturdy. They are supposed to give if something hits them. It’s a warning that there is danger ahead.Smile [:)]

Interesting photos of those electrics (and diesel electrics)! What is the voltage in the catenary?

A smaller loco of unknown class.  Steamed up and ready to run.

Good evening Leon , I see that you are still running about taking drink orders , happens when the boss opens the vault and offers free libations , doubled by the Senior managers pention for pre paid food ( at least we got paid for it though at the very resonable sr managers discountWhistling [:-^] ) So with that said a Keith's and large pizza with all the trimmings.

Tom-Good to hear that after many a try you've found someone to fix the wall properly Thumbs Up [tup]Though unfortunatly it will deplete the ole retirement fund somewhat Thumbs Down [tdn]could be worse you could be right in the way of Ike.They've gone out on a limb and posted flood warnings for most of southwestern ontario Sarnia to Toronto in case the strom drops a pile o rain on us on sunday when it's supposed to arrive over head. Where did I put that oil skin Question [?] Some great reading from da archieves as well sir Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

I try not to look at the active topics it makes me ill still to see how we've been shafted, yup my toughts no one will change that.I'm sure the lockmaster will enjoy that coment.

Lars-Good to see you again sir and you were in with some fine fine books.A little bit there for everybody which is A1 top notch stuff.Very generous to spring for the food on this montiversary as well Thumbs Up [tup]

Neat link on the new ferries as well. It's nice to see that the risde is free Thumbs Up [tup] not that the nickle was anything to complain about ( I'm sure some people would though Sigh [sigh] )

Ontario is heaven,Northern Ontario is definatly Gods's country,I do intend to retire there eventually Thumbs Up [tup]. I'm what you call an oddity,I'm as fiercly loyal and pround of my country and home Province as most American's are of theirs. But you knew that already,I can always count on you to rattle my chain Thumbs Up [tup]Big Smile [:D]

Pete-Some fine looking shots from "over ome" Thumbs Up [tup] I've always liked the geeps , first gen power in general. It's amazing how much work they still ring out of these old diesels.

You must be in heaven with the free beer and food, your tab for once will not increase in size ( other than the daily compound interest Whistling [:-^] )

Eric-Coupe more neat neat pictures, love the shot of the Zepher. The Agawa Canyon is in North Western Ontario. You start at Sault Ste Marie and the train goes north west for four hours.

<CP Rail M-630 at ExpoRail - personal foto>

G'day Gents!

The smell of freshly baked pastries ‘n brewed coffee fills the air at the Saloon by the Siding on this Saturday! Time to check out our <light> ‘n <traditional> breakfasts too . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Petrol has jumped 30 cents to $3.70 <rounded> ‘n is expected to top 4 bucks real quick, perhaps even make it to a fiver before all of this business with Ike is over.

Weather predictions now has the remains of the storm system passing directly over us on Sunday <tomorrow> with the possibility of 6 inches of torrential rainfall along with sustained high winds. Ought to be a loveRly day ‘n nite . . . batten down the hatches, Boris, we're in "it." <yikes> Gotta man the "diaper brigade" as well, for undoubtedly there'll be water coming through the basement bulkhead . . . <arrrrrggggghhhhh>

Estimate for the "fix" came in just about where I figured - I bought a car for that price <once or twice>! <censored> But, watchyagonnado, eh Question [?]

Truly a treat having our Senior Manager <Emeritus> on board once again, if only for the Monthly Remembrance of the founding of this joint called "Our" Place! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Sure knows how to shake things up! <uh oh>  But hard to argue with his points . . .

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Friday - September12th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 19 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:30 AM <9:30 AM EDT>: Oh yeah, I surely did check out ALL of the RDC Pix at that great site you recommended. Thumbs Up [tup] Absolutely wunnerful stuff . . . Yeah!! [yeah]

Did read about the Chunnel fire with that freight along with the disruption of service for stranded rail passengers at either end . . . a mess fer sure, fer sure. Aside from a wall collapse, fire in the tunnel surely can <and did> ruin one's day! <yikes>

Also a tragedy out in SoCal with that Metrolink ‘n freight train collision. Some rather graphic fotos have been on the tube . . . loss of life in that one. <sad>

Do appreciate your support for this place along with the QUARTERS ‘n ROUND! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] However, since the drinks were on the house on Friday, our Monthly Anniversary - your money will be carried over to today <Saturday>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Page 19 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 9:08 AM <10:08 AM EDT>: Nice threesome of fotos from our Resident Ontario Connection on our Monthly Anniversary day! Bow [bow]

Wondering WHAT that NS duo is called Question [?]

One of these days <daze> there's just gotta be a way to experience the Algoma Central's passenger train for the full route <round trip of course>. Getting to it from here is surely a challenge, fer sure, fer sure. Now that the family coffers are to be depleted of a significant amount of treasure <thanx to that blankety-blank wall problem> it will be awhile before expendable dollars get amassed for things like FUN! <groan>

Thanx for thinking of us! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Lars <LoveDomes> at 10:45 AM <11:45 AM EDT>: And another "easterner" has been heard from - this time our most revered Senior Manager <Emeritus>! Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow]

I thought of you on the 11th, as the televised shots of the ceremony at the site was being aired. I guess as the construction proceeds, the day isn't that far off when the "hole" will no longer be there as the foundation work ‘n lower levels of the project begin to take shape. Don't know how many times I've thought about flying to NY City just to pay tribute to those lost . . . but always change my mind in favor of my way of reflecting here at home. A most somber day, as you put it. I'll surely never forget AND totally concur with your comments regarding how we must win the war against those H-bent on engaging in the most cowardly of acts - terrorism.

Hadn't seen a Knickerbocker ad in awhile - I do recall that particular one of yours though put up at the bar back when we had JanOlov appearing regularly with his whisky/whiskey bottles! <grin> Hmmmmm, now there's a name from our past. A guy who just flickered out like the snap of two fingers. Not so much as a courtesy Email . . . just gone-zo. Takes all kinds, eh Question [?]

Many thanx for the link on the SI Ferries . . . brought back some fine memories, especially looking at the Pix from the older boats that I used for many, many years. Was always a treat. No more cars though - I knew that, but just had put it aside in my feeble mind. Guess with the Verrazano-Narrows bridge, the handwriting was on the wall for that service to cease. Gawd how I hate to think of "our" island getting "ruined" by that connection with Brooklyn. <censored> Anyway, Spirit of America boat surely was a treat to see - most special of all, fer sure, fer sure! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Only YOU <The Platters> can "say it" the way "it" needs to be said! ‘nuf said! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Really enjoyed viewing your book covAHs once again at the bar! Wow!! [wow] No problem with the Rule of Six Suspension - at least you have my "okay" to do so - now ‘n then! <grin> And you kept them all within reasonable bounds. We all know about the "loading" issues being brought to our attention because of too many Pix on the Page.

I liked that Jersey Central covAH the best - looks like the Raritan River bridge, eh Question [?]

Many, many thanx for keeping us in mind - and YES, I do get a little "rattled" when I see guys logged on for hours at a time without visiting. Don't know why that is, other than to say it "forces" me to sit here - waiting - for something to get Posted. Kinda like a "magnetic" attraction, I suppose. <yikes>

Hope we get to enjoy your presence in the not to distant future - I know RUTH surely looks forward to it! <uh oh>

Page 19 - Pete <pwolfe> at 2:06 PM ‘n 3:51 PM: "In" with a two-fer on our Monthly Anniversary day! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Looks like you were not only spared the price of a tankard, but also the food was free as well! Wow!! [wow] A good day for our Interim Governor General! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Fine shot of GWs 6024 snaking its way to the mainline! Bow [bow]

Electrics look good too, but ya know - I'd rather see those monster steamers! <grin>

In your latest list of 10 names, Fusilier kinda stands out for Moi! Thumbs Up [tup] And yes, the cheering was almost audible in advance of your Posting of ‘em . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

If all goes well, I'm thinking we'll "do" the TrainWreck on Thursday - then the Barriger Library along with the StL MoT on Friday . . . don't forget your MoT membership card! Thumbs Up [tup]

Figured you'd "get it" once those Zephyr names came up . . .

Tickleberry - now there's a name for a tunnel inhabited with bats! <yikes>

What's Thyristor control Question [?] Curious mind needs to know . . .

Methinks you may be on to something with that innovative idea to power your aircraft over the pond . . . <uh oh>

I'd surely have to consume at least 4 or 5 pints of ale before attempting to pronounce any of those "funny" names that we've been seeing at the bar. <triple yikes>

Many thanx for your always inclusive efforts along with the descriptions accompanying your Foto spread. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Eric <EricX2000> at 6:38 PM <4:38 PM Sandbox time>: A daylite visit from our Sandman! Bow [bow] Now that's the way to do it - surely keeps things alive ‘round here - just in case we have someone stopping by to keep the conversation flowing . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

The time of your previous Post was 12:05 AM on the 12th <Sandbox time> so methinks the Larsman gotcha!> However, not to worry, if there's anyone ‘round here who has put forth all kinds of memorable remembrances of our anniversaries - it's been YOU! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Lars just loves to jangle one's chain - he does it soooooooo well, eh Question [?] <grin>

And oh yeah, I <gotcha> too with my comment about "missing something" . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] BUT do understand that when you began typing your submission - it was indeed BEFORE the new day . . . however, technicalities have sent many a person to their demise OR set ‘em free, depending on which side of that coin one is on. <uh oh>

Always like that Zephyr shot at the MoT . . . must've been a treat to travel those trains, eh Question [?] My guess is you're thinking of the cab, whereas I'm "in" the coaches . . . <grin>

Yeah, the Exposition Flyer drumhead is my favorite of that string as well! Thumbs Up [tup]

I found the 777 just too big of an airplane for my liking. The bigger they are, the harder they fall is the way the saying goes! <uh oh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Curious mind wonders about that last foto of yours????? Where was that shot taken ‘n what is it???? Real or model???? What's the purpose of it, is what I'm driving at . . . .

Many thanx for your most inclusive comments ‘n support for "Our" Place! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 8:51 PM <9:51 PM EDT>: Our Manager has returned to the scene of the crime <aka: bar> with some good cheer ‘n company for Leon, Boris ‘n the H&H "gals.". Thumbs Up [tup]

October 1st is right around the corner for our Gordon Lightfoot concert! Wow!! [wow] This is the one where we donated some bucks to our Public Broadcasting Service <PBS> ‘n received two tix "up front" for the show. Really looking forward to it - love the man's music. Bow [bow]

I think you, Lars ‘n Moi have a most difficult time of it when the subject of our being treated so shoddily comes up. All I can add is that we are guests here - it's free - ‘n we must "play" by their rules, even if they happen to be skewed from time to time . . .

Looks like the Larsman has a way of getting right to the point, eh Question [?] <grin> Take it from me - it's simply the "way" many people from New YaWk are - direct. <triple grin> I've been away for over 40 years, so perhaps that aspect of my personality has been watered-down. But every now ‘n then . . . <uh oh>

Glad to know that you're not letting our Bar Chandler get away with anything! <see, YOU are doing a "Larsman" on HIM!> Anyway, keeping tabs on his compound interest is helping us retire our debt ‘round here! <Ka Ching> <KaChing>

Regarding "my other Thread" - I think what I'll do is Post a Pix now ‘n then, just to keep it "up" on the first Page . . . don't want it to "slip" to oblivion as "Our" Place III has. Of course, once the LOCKMASTER "does us" with that one . . . oh well. <barf> But, for all intents ‘n purposes <dontchaluvit?> Translasted: For ALL in TENTS ‘n PORPOISES! Anyway, where was I Question [?] Ahhhh yes - my active support for that Thread is over, surely not seeing any return on the investment in time ‘n effort. Conversation much better ‘n appropriate right here. Thumbs Up [tup]

Fine inclusive offering on our Monthly Anniversary Evening . . . appreciate your 2nd visit ‘n support for "Our" Place! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

TODAY is Steak ‘n All The Trimmings Nite!

Hi Tom and all.

A little early but seeing as it free beer againApprove [^] and to celebrate the Mighty Shrews 7-0 winWow!! [wow]Bow [bow] I'll have a Bathams please CINDY. Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC Yes it was my first flight across the Atlantic and back I had a 777 although the TV in the back of the seat did not work on one of themBanged Head [banghead]. I will probably feel the same way about flying when I get back from my trip.

Have you heard of any high vehicles hitting the overhead electric wires in SwedenQuestion [?], not a good thing I would have thought.Shock [:O]

The electric power in the centenary in the photos is 25, 000 Volts single phase A.C.

Many thanks for the photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. I think the small steam locomotive ‘Brasken' could be a locomotive of that name that was built in early 2006. It has been on the Exmoor Steam Railway and the Rudyard Lake railway in England if it is the same engine.

ROB Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup]. Those electrics were certainly good locomotives for BR,Bow [bow] with English Electric electrical equipment. Like the Geeps there are still a few of EE class 37s hanging on in there in Britain, even some of the 50 year old class 20s working for DRS.

Yes I could get used to this free beer and food at the barApprove [^], hate to think what my bar tab will be like when I get back from my holidayShock [:O], rising interest rates and no wages to pay it off, but I am sure there must be a scheme for paid holidays at the barWhistling [:-^]Big Smile [:D].

TOM They are forecasting about the same amount of rain for us hereThumbs Down [tdn], but there again they said we would get about 3 to 4 inches yesterday but we got nothing, hope they are wrong about the 6 inchesYeah!! [yeah].

Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup] yes I too prefer the steamers but I am really glad I took those diesel and electric photos as it is surprising how quickly the rail scene can change.Yeah!! [yeah]. Although it might be possible to see a class 60 and if lucky one of the few 86s left at the same place, the passenger trains are all Pedilonos and class 66s on the freights.87101 is no more having been scrappedSad [:(].

The Thyristor Control was a form of electronic switch to control the power to the traction motors, which I believe was fairly new when the 87s were built. The other 35 class 87s had a Tap Changer transformer and rectifiers; perhaps Eric can explain more about this.Thumbs Up [tup]

It is good to know the Western Fusilier is one of the Westerns preservedApprove [^], it is owned by the National Railway Museum at York, are you sure it was not a Bronx CheerSmile [:)].

Sounds a good plan for my visitApprove [^] the membership card is in the walletThumbs Up [tup].

I have some more photos from Germany from AlanThumbs Up [tup] On the special train there was a photo stop between Marienheide & Meinerzhagen.

These two feature No.8 which was an ex DB class V160 No. 216.

The other locomtive on the special train was No.4 an ex DB class V100 No. 211.

The photos were taken on a frieght only line which apparently is to close soonSad [:(]. The limit of passenger operation is Marienheide.

Well CINDY the computer seems to be getting slower at loading the picsSigh [sigh] so I'll have another free BathamsApprove [^] and post these 4 photos and back in a while.Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Tom and all.

Back again CINDY with the rest of Alan's photos from Germany and another Bathams pleaseThumbs Up [tup].

Another photo of No. 8 a bit further along the freight only line.

The special train reversed at Meinerzhagen onto another freight only line.

The line serves a quarry, but the line is threatened with closure. Looking the other way from the last photo this is former station at Krummenerl with No.4 in the background.

Another view of the former station at Krummenerl.

Well CINDY it is amazing how well the free Bathams is going downOops [oops] so another one pleaseThumbs Up [tup].

G'day Gents!

Aside from Pete, our Bar Chandler, dropping off a two-fer with some fine Pix, this place is typically slow on this Saturday in mid-continent USA.

We're hot, muggy ‘n waiting for "the other shoe" to drop as remnants of Ike are heading this way . . . Juneau knows something's "up," for he's staying close to the house . . .

Figure I'd put this "up" ‘n call it a day . . . going out this evening for the finale of our summer theatre for this year. Tonite is "The Music Man." Seen several times "live," but always a winner. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Anyway, here's a few RANDOM FOTOS to maintain some interest at this Bar by the Ballast! Thumbs Up [tup]

Evening gents-Leon-a round of brandies to wash down the beers everybody else has bought-just a quick `bookmark` whilst I catch up...

Apologies for missing yesterday-was a matter of priorities-was mine & missisnicks 19th anniversary -also we have her mum down for the weekend-not enough hours in the day I`m afraid

Notes from the real world-I think events in New York have been eloquently and adequately covered by those best suited to so do.......Chunnel fire is apparently now out, although have had no word of services being resumed-extensive safety checks still required..........Grim news of Ike ripping up Texas.......Equally grim tidings of metro train wreck....On a lighter note,in these parts, lipstick on a pig generally indicates that someone is looking at a hot date.....Whistling [:-^]

Back in a bit

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, I would like a juicy Filet Mignon with lots of mushrooms! Since Nick is somewhere in the building, maybe he could cook it? Yes, a cold Keith's, please.

Finally got some time to pay a visit to my favorite place by the siding, Our Place! A pretty nice day here this Saturday.

Rob –  Thanks for the answer!Thumbs Up [tup] I’ve been flying over Sault Ste Marie many times, last time was last Sunday. Hard to see any details from 37,000 ft though.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Tom –  Gas up 30 cents! Wow!Grumpy [|(] Here it hasn’t moved at all so far, still around $3.40. I better get some gas tonight.Mischief [:-,]

I know Lars knows how to wake you up, I just had to give something back.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I understand you now, what I missed.Smile [:)] In my very narrow world the new day starts when I wake up in the morning (whatever time that is).

Yes, I also wish that I could get a ride in one of those old, good looking, Zephyrs. But I am afraid those days are gone.

My favorite planes flying across the pond are Boeing 767 and DC-10 (MD-11).Smile [:)]

That little locomotive is, as far as I know, a fantasy creation. It is a real steam locomotive running on a (about) 7” gauge track. Its just for fun rides and I just happened to drive by and stopped when I saw it.

The steam locomotive.

There is also another locomotive, a gasoline powered one.

Nice collection of photos!Thumbs Up [tup] My favorites being AlaskaRR at Denali and the old Observation Dome car at Montreal Central Station!Yeah!! [yeah] I have to remember to win the powerball so I can take that trip across Canada in old Budd cars! Smile [:)]

Pete –  Yes, it happens every now and then that too high vehicles are hitting the overhead barrier and, sometimes, also the electric wire. The barrier is about 1 meter (39”) lower than the wire. In Sweden, like several other countries in Northern Europe, they use 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC to power the trains.

I don’t know where that little locomotive was built. I have to do some research.Smile [:)]

Nice photos from Alan as usual!Thumbs Up [tup] I have a V100 model and also a model of the car next to the V160 locomotive. It looks like Alan took the pictures in the spring. I am not sure where in Germany Meinerzhagen is. Thanks to Alan!Bow [bow]

Nick –  I guess I would prefer to be in the UK if I have to see lipstick on a pig!Mischief [:-,] Hmm.

Do you know what happened in the chunnel? What caused the fire, etc?Question [?]

Good evening Leon. I think a Keith's and a nice strip loin done to perfection with the mushroom sauce oh and what the heck a fully loaded baked potato.

Tom-Enjoy the show tonight and your upcomming one Thumbs Up [tup] I aggree with you Gordon's music is just that real music not the canned trash of today ( ask  me what a really think of it Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] )

Great photo's from your vault today , nice to see that Delson saved one of the 70 tonners incidentally those were the only GE locmotives purchased by Canadian roads until CN orderd their first batch of cowel bodied dash 8's in 1991 !As to that pair in Marion those NS units were early dash 8's with the non-wide cab bodies , cheap and ugly and in proper Southern / Norfolk Western style they were set up to operate long hood forward.

Hope you weather the weather well tomorrow they are calling for upwards of 50mm of rain here tomorrow as well ! We may all be bailing before it's over and done with. You get to here and I can drive us the rest of the way to the Sault,it's not that far.Besides you'll see parts of Ontario that are still wild.

I was kind of thinking that Lars's final post over at the other thread was appropriate.I wasn't thinking of supporting it much any more myself.

Pete-Some great photo's , oh and no one gets paid holiday's sheesh the noive of some people eh Tom Question [?]

Eric-I can't imagine that the Sault would look like much of anything from 37,000 feet, I doubt you would even see the Seaway locks well from that height. That's an intriging little steamer,I think one just like it would look good in your back yard Thumbs Up [tup]

Right-back for the main event, looks like the weather is closing down all over so lets pull the drapes, settle down in the members lounge, crank up the sounds and prepare for an evening of wining and dining -Leon,I`ll have the pan fried Welsh Black fillet stuffed with pate, brandy, cream and mixed peppercorn sauce, onion rings, grilled toms, skinny fries, petit pois and a couple of yorkshire puddings (-hey-it`s my dinner-I`ll have what I like .....)   And whilst you are about it,lets have a couple of bottles of the good brandy please and a tray of the balloon snifters-top man-have a couple of belts yourself, the track gang will be in soon after weekend overtime on the S.O.B system and I doubt they will be wanting Gatorade.......

O.K-A general note-is worth mentioning that Welsh is a completely different language to English with seperate semiotic roots and the letters have different values-thus Llanfair (for example) is pronounced "thlan-vi-ar"-is remiss of me not to have provided phonetic translations before-will attempt to do so in future....Ashamed [*^_^*]

So-to business:-

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Dont panic mate !-this band won`t be hitting the road anytime soon-Missisnick has full time important work and Hannah has school,so is destined to be local work only-shame `cos it is the best band I have ever played in-that said,we have an open invite to put tracks up on the local record labels download website so studio time is imminent-indeed,one of our H.C.Band tracks has had 10,000+ downloads from various sites -quite shocked when I found out.....(thats downloads- not views......Shock [:O])

Hope you enjoy tonights show -and wildly envious of the Lightfoot show Approve [^]-enjoy !!

Like the rest of the company I am pleased you have a potential result on the basement issue-I know it will hurt to write the cheque but if it means the Can-Am,S-Capades and family home are made secure then I guess it is worth it...................

SHANE-I know it sounds like a stretch but play a Little Feat `33 at `45 and it will sound like James Brown (sort of) -same `pulse` and swing.........

Actually a brief digression here-sat and watched the Beatles movie "Hard Days Night" the other evening-blew me away all over again, from the first chord to the fade out-perfect pop songs,-genuinely sent shivers up my spine-Took me right back to my earliest childhood..."She loves you, yeah yeah yeah"..............."And with a love like that...You Know it cant be bad,Yeah yeah yeah yeahhhhhh............."-truly 4 lads with the Midas touch Approve [^]

ROB-Wonderful pix from the A.C.R & O.N.R-and a delightful statement of intent regarding your feelings about your home Thumbs Up [tup]-people tend to forget that just because Canadians are the most laid back people in the world (with the possible exception of the Irish) you can dig in with the best of them-I would hate to be part of any army that tried to invade-it just wouldn`t work ("O.K guys-back up into the woods-they`ll soon lose interest and s*d off again")   Thumbs Up [tup]

LARSMAN-Here is a treat unlooked for Approve [^]-good to see you mate-Hope all is as well as might be hoped for ......Appreciate the straight talkin`-tell it like it is mate !!-good on ya-nice set of images for us-and would concur with PETE -is a Jones Goods on the front cover of the Highland railway vol.-could be wrong here but believe some of them had slots cut in the front of the chimney, presumably to lift the exhaust smoke

TOM-Isn`t that Zephyr a thing of beauty.........

PETE-Timetables-I have a much treasured copy of the S.R 1936/7 working timetable -last used to provide a basis for my S&D line operations-lovely pic of the `King`-as luck would have it I have a model of 6024 in that livery ( but not so shiny Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg])-Llanberis-got the wrong end of the stick (or line) with that one-when we were there they were laying out the new line towards the centre of the village (pix to follow) -was all a bit of a building site-imagine it is all up and running by now.......was thinking in terms of an extension towards the coast.....Y9`s-only pic I have is in the Ian Allan-will scan it anyway but is very small pic-I think they are the `Pugs` that Hornby used for their `basic` shunter-got 2 of them, they use Scalelxtric motors held in place by a couple of springs-very reliable but startling 0-60 speed.............

Wonderful `West Coast` pix-how soon those liveries have been consigned to memory-rather fond of the `Executive/swallow`passenger colours and the `Lone Ranger`(black around the windows) freight variations--and some lovely afternoon light on the pix Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC-now that little engine has got my mind turning-have seen similar examples on the Moor Vale Railway down in darkest Hampshire-leave it with me for a day or two-lots of family stuff going on just now so a bit busy but will get with it.....

PETE-again-Those pix from Alan hit the spot-my Alan was well into that scene (as you know )-is rather poignant as his widow is asleep in Hannahs room ,about 6 feet above me......

Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Back to you sir-a fine mix of all that is good-especially enjoyed the C.N#30 with just a glimpse of the O.N.R 14xx -an Alco R.S if memory serves,in the background

Right-general note-lots of pix promised (plus a track plan or two-) bear with me please,it will happen-just a bit busy at the moment......

O.K-lets have a pic or two before we go-Yer man the boss has noted a fondness for big British steamers..now these have been out before but what the hey-so sue me.......

img{2006_0916picton0022.jpg Great Western glory picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Now you can just hear the roar here-the Red Dragon Express lifts out of the Europort terminal at Fishguard & Goodwick.............

img{aprmay08016.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

And the `Duke of Gloucester` takes it nice and slow -either for the dozens of trainspotters with cameras or the appalling state of the track.......who knows..

img{gigtrains039.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

And speaking of appalling track-here is `Lord Beaverbrook`on an up express-an excellent engine-holds the track well and will lift whatever you hang on behind it,despite losing the so-called `traction tyres` early on

Am looking forward to adding a re-built B/o/B and `Evening Star` to the fleet as soon as finances permit..............Whistling [:-^]

O.K-bedtime now-speak soon-be lucky.....

"Our" Place is CLOSED on SUNDAYs

G'day Gents!

As a departure from my policy of trying to avoid back-to-back Posts - we're at a multiple of TEN - time to remind all on-lookers of the way we do things 'round here <from Page One>.

"Our" Place III was locked today by Kalmbach, so "Our" Place IV has begun on this 31st day of July 2008.

Final statistics for "Our" Place III:

What's different Question [?]  Nothing! Same crew, same way of doing things and hopefully the same supporting cast that has kept us afloat all this time.

History: "Our" Place began on April 12th, 2005 on the General Discussion (Classic Trains) Forum.

Concept: An adult bar & grill for all who are interested in and familiar with "Classic Trains."

The conversations are as they would be in a neighborhood bar, where people know one another and share stories, photos and other information relevant to the idea of the Forum - Classic Trains.

All of this with some humor thrown in and the rest is simple.

Objective: Have fun!

Ground rules: Leave ALL emotional baggage and "attitudes" on the front porch.

Be inclusive with your comments through the acknowledgment of the other guy's efforts. Hit ‘n run Posts are not welcome.

Greet the bartender upon entering and order a drink or food. Pretty easy, eh  Question [?]

Reminder: "Our" Place is CLOSED on SUNDAYs

<but go ahead ‘n slip your messages thru the mail slots on the doors!>

G'day Gents!

The rains have arrived after midnite - stormy 'til around noon, keeping Juneau housebound 'til then. Lost our cable package (TV - fone - internet) for about 5 hours. But at this writing, we seem to be back in business - rain has ceased. Yeah!! [yeah]

CLOSED on SUNDAY is the rule ‘round here. But of course if you have something to drop off - use the mail slots. Thumbs Up [tup]

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Saturday - September13th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 19 - Pete <pwolfe> at 12:21 PM ‘n 1:52 PM: "In" with a two-fer on this most muggy of Saturdays. <phew> Makes me wonder how anyone can say they enjoy this stuff . . . can't imagine living anyplace where humidity is thick enough to slice! <barf>

Anyway, most appreciative for those fine fotos from your Mate - Alan. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Like the colors on the German equipment - nice match. Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

That baggage car <or whatever it is> behind the loco looks almost like my LGB post office/baggage car I bought for my passenger train set up for Christmas. Minus the cupola, though . . . similar design ‘n color. Thumbs Up [tup]

Those right-of-way shots are superb! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Interesting that you brought up the topic of your bar tab - long term absence ‘n scheme for paid holidays at the bar. Goes like this: Whenever a salaried employee decides to take leave of "Our" Place for an extended period <definition of "extended" determined by committee ‘n sure to vary with personnel involved> that employee's bar tab will be increased by the amount of wages one would've earned had they been here. Now, for paid holidays at the bar. Bwaaaaa Haaaaaaa Haaaaaaa Haaaaaaa. Get the point Question [?]

Recall that song from Disney's Snow White - Hi Ho, Hi Ho it's off to work . . . . well in your case it's I Owe, I Owe, to pay it off I go . . . Kinda fits, eh Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Bronx cheer would've been heard without a doubt - I think you confused some muffled groans with cheers of delight regarding your TEN train names. <grin>

Do appreciate the elaboration regarding the Thrysitor control - for a second there I thought it was something related to making one impotent. But what do I know Question [?] <yikes>

And I've "tapped" a rectifier or two in my day . . . but of course, they weren't supposed to be "banged upon" to get ‘em to function. This was hardy equipment, aboard ship . . . they don't make ‘em like that anymore. Boris, hit it again! <bbbbbbbbbang!>

I know you're not taking Continental Airlines for any legs of your trip - but just recently saw where they're planning to discontinue service to the UK from some stateside airports - Kennedy in New York being one - effective in mid-October, I believe. Makes it awfully difficult to plan anything out, eh Question [?] Bet people holding tickets are ecstatic with that news! <not> Thumbs Down [tdn]

Enjoyed your visits ‘n appreciate the time ‘n effort you put into what you do for us! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 6:12 PM <12:12 AM Sunday GMT>: Great to see that our man in Wales has a Saturday night/Sunday morning "off." Didn't expect a weekender from you - but surely helps things out to have you aboard! <KaChing> <KaChing>

Belated 19th wedding Anniversary greetings! Bow [bow] Yeah!! [yeah] How in the world did MissiNick survive it allQuestion [?] <grin> Women - tuff creations, eh Question [?] Youbetcha! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

That "lipstick on a pig" is getting wide use ‘n to think it's such a "dated" saying . . . stick ‘round long enough ‘n things have a way of resurfacing.

Real world news, as seems to be the case, is a bummer - best to lock ourselves into "Our" Place ‘n shut out the demons. Thumbs Up [tup]

Appreciate the 1st installment of Nick's Saturday Nite at the bar! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Eric <EricX2000> at 7:22 PM <5:22 PM Sandbox time>: Many thanx for the Saturday visit - earlier than usual, which is appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Add another dime to the petrol price increase . . . topped off both vehicles ‘n the price has risen to $3.80 <rounded>. Heard that stations are running out of fuel with "Sorry, no gas" signs being posted. That, of course, creates a "run" on the dwindling supplies. Fortunately, we do have refineries across the river in Illinois, so we probably won't run dry until those Texas facilities get back on line. However, we surely will see a "spike" in pricing - it's already well over $4 in Illinois <higher tax rates>. <barf>

Many thanx for the rundown ‘n additional fotos on that "funky" train . . . stretches my "like" for ALL things that have steel wheels rolling on steel tracks. <grin>

IF I ever BUY a lottery ticket AND wind up a WINNER - I'm going to purchase one of the VIA Rail Park car observation domes ‘n pay them to haul my aging body back ‘n forth across Canada attached to the Canadian . . . now there's a PLAN! Wow!! [wow]

Last time I ran a fare check for a round trip from Toronto to Vancouver in the triple bedroom <drawing room suite> the cost was DOUBLE what we paid in 2002-03. Can't imagine there are very many taking that thrice weekly trip very often on a repetitive basis. Sorry to say, it's become a tourist train - BUT still maintains a schedule - still hauls passengers in coach ‘n still has the "feel" of a REAL train. Thumbs Up [tup]

My longest flight aboard a commercial airliner was in 1988 from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur aboard a Singapore Airlines 747. It was a 17 hour trip ‘n I spent most of it in the upper lounge. Was wunnerful . . . government sent me over in coach class ‘n I upgraded the trip on "my dime." Somewhere over the Pacific the flight attendants invited me to enjoy the lounge - which I did! Trip back was more of the same, although I was TIRED - only spent 48 hours "in country," then back aboard . . . <ugh> Was without a doubt the best flying experience I ever had . . . Bow [bow]

Many thanx for the twilight <actually dark with the cloud cover ‘round here!> visit! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 19 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 8:59 PM <9:59 PM EDT>: Music Man was a treat - rains held off - a good evening out with the bride! Juneau survived until we returned home so it was a good Saturday nite! Thumbs Up [tup]

That Algoma Central trip would indeed be a good one. I'd most probably be doing a "solo" on that one, so perhaps it could be something we could consider. What time of year would you recommend Question [?] How much time do you think something like that would involve from Toronto ‘n return Question [?] First nite in Brantford, of course - visiting the St. George Inn is a priority <of course!>. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thinking of the "wilds of Ontario" brings to mind an image of YOUR gal <now working at The 2nd Class Saloon> . . . "wild" is an understatement, at least from what my imagination conjures up. <yikes>

Do thank you for keeping this joint in your mind! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Business helps to pay YOUR salary! <KaChing> <KaChing>

Page 20 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 9:03 PM <3:03 AM Sunday GMT>: Back with part deux ‘n a grand time was had by all! Certainly outdid yourself on that effort, Mate! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Appears we're both in situations of intense rain ‘n gloom. What better place to pass the time than inside our Bar by the Ballast Question [?] As long as the ‘lectricity remains "on" - we've had several "pulses" that have tripped off a few gadgets - but thus far, things are holding up. Emergency generator is on stand-by ‘n fortunately there's a stash of petrol to keep it runnin' for a few days if something like that were to occur. <uh oh>

Thanx for the pronunciation help on the Welsh . . . might be a bit o' fun trying to tackle that language. Probably win my share of "bar bets" with a "Can you pronounce THIS Question [?]" challenge. Maybe even a punch in the snoot . . . <yikes>

Hardly panic, but concern for the well being of "Our" Place - very pleased to know that you're not planning on skeedaddling anytime soon . . . but of course, should "that day" come up - would really appreciate a "heads up." Thumbs Up [tup]

Sure appears that your band is found some on-line fans out there - downloads can be a double-edged sword, eh Question [?] Gives one a feeling of satisifaction knowing someone gives a Rat's Patoot for your music - but on the other hand, no Sheqels! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Down [tdn]

Basement issue isn't really just one area. The most problematic is going to be contracted for a fix . . . have others than cause grief only on the most unusual of weather-related circumstances. Like TODAY! <groan> Best to see it than try to describe it - nothing that many other homeowners are faced with. With occasional horizontal rains pelting the sides of the house, why not some leaks, eh Question [?] Fortunately only the basement is experiencing problems - living spaces are dry ‘n tight. Thankfully this isn't shipboard - for the bilge pumps would be working overtime. <yikes>

Zephyr is indeed a thing of beauty. You'd really appreciate a visit to the StL MoT ‘n then a sojourn over to the TrainWreck Saloon for a recap of the day's events! <oh oh> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Mention of early Beatles brings to mind "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah . . . " a favorite of my oldest when he was in diapers. His mom would sing that to him ‘n he'd grin from ear to ear, trying his level best to do the "background"! <grin> Yeah, they had the Midas Touch ‘n hit it just right here in the land of squealing young girls . . . Seems just like Yesterday <not a bad tune, either!>. Thumbs Up [tup]

Red Dragon Express is a <keeper> - Duke of Gloucester looks to be quite the beast on rails ‘n Lord Beaverbrook is a monster model! Wow!! [wow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for the menu, drinks, good cheer, foto's ‘n insightfulness of chat! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Kind of dark here, as always. Okay, there is the mail slot. Let's see. Ah, down it went.

This is my catching up and does not include posts since my last posting Saturday.  In other words, this is kind of Old Stuff!

Tom –  Recon mission for our Manager set up by me?Question [?]Oops [oops] I would never do such a thing!Blush [:I] Especially not on a Sunday! At least not very often.Whistling [:-^]

The moose hunting was a flop! I saw only one and it was pretty far away. My picture of it is not even sharp.

Nice poster from the Swedish National Railway Museum!Thumbs Up [tup] Wish I had one on my wall.Smile [:)]

More interesting photos from TRE and your RDC ride!Thumbs Up [tup] It’s kind of fun to see you posing in front of the RDC number, #2013! That is exactly the same number as the power unit of the X2000, #2013, that Amtrak leased! Must have been a most interesting trip to Dallas. TRE also has a few GP9s.Smile [:)] Classic locomotive.

Sleep like a Kitten! I like that C&O ad! Smile [:)]

The RDC-1 ads from 1950 were correct. RDC was a very useful car. I must admit I am kind of surprised that not more RDCs were built.

I like the photos of NH’s RDCs!

GG1! Indeed a very classic locomotive.Yeah!! [yeah] Too sad there is no operational one preserved. I understand the reasons, but it is still sad. I just noticed it had the same power output as the X2000. Another thing GG1 and X2000 had in common was track 16 at Washingotn’s Union Station. GG1 came in on track 16 and couldn’t stop, ending up in the baggage room and X2000 “lived” on track 16 during its year with Amtrak. Smile [:)]

A bunch of very nice photos of GG1s!Wow!! [wow]

PRR S1 was a different kind of locomotive with its wheel arrangement. I can understand if it was slipping easily with only 8 drivers for that size of locomotive. Too bad it wasn’t preserved though. Looking at the photo from the World’s Fair with a close up of the drivers it seems like the drivers were sitting on some kind of "wheels" so the drivers could spin while the locomotive was on display. I wonder if they fired her up to get steam for that purpose?Question [?]

Very nice view from the northbound ARR Denali Star! But I wouldn’t care for it in the winter! I also recongized some strange looking people at St. louis Union Station. Must be from FBI’s archive of most wanted.Mischief [:-,]

Interesting photo from Chicago of the Texas Eagle, that had been switched to the platform a little bit earlier. The brakeman’s device connected to the train line is still in place after the train was backed up to the station from the yard. Smile [:)]

I guess I missed a couple of for me unknown movies at the Emporium while I was gone, Caddyshack and The Longest Yard.

I like B&O’s emblem! It is a very nice design.Thumbs Up [tup] B&O had 10,000 miles of tracks in 1950. Very even number. All the way to St. Louis! Nice photos from, among other places, Harpers Ferry!Smile [:)]

Hmm, so many UK ads/posters for our Interim Governor General!?! Okay, I guess it won’t hurt. I've been to Windsor but I can’t recall I saw that water/lake/river.

Very nice steam locos you bought!Yeah!! [yeah] You have to figure out a way to expand your layout!Smile [:)]

Hmm, Pete’s friend showed up again! That is strange! Hmm. Wonder why? Where is Pete? And he starts talking about Hooters!?Question [?] What is going on??

Good photos of NYC’s Hudsons!Thumbs Up [tup] A very classic locomotive!

A tribute to our Captain, the car I rented in Sweden, a Volvo S-60. Very nice to drive. The gas price is a little bit more than twice our price.

Pete –  I thought it was cold when I was in the old country.Grumpy [|(] My blood is so thin after the years in the desert that everything below 75-80˚ is cold.

Interesting photos from Santa Fe!Thumbs Up [tup] I wonder if the livery of those locomotives was something they created when Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were supposed to merge?

You are right about the TT scale. It didn’t last very long. I never had anything in that scale. Smile [:)]

Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway has a very nice steam locomotive, #24! Wow! Nice photos!Smile [:)]

You mentioned there was a brunette in the bar asking for me while I was gone. What did she say? Smile [:)]

Thanks for the nice samples of your American photos!Thumbs Up [tup]

A very nice collection of steam locomotives from Llangollen and Great Central Railway! The number plate on the class 2MT No 78019 looks kind of German to me.

Interesting photo of the Trevithick’s locomotive!Thumbs Up [tup] Must have been interesting to see it move. Different kind of wheels on it. No flanges.Shock [:O]

Hold it! Something is going on! All of a sudden your friend from Canada shows up again (what was her name?) and then you start talking about Hooters at St. Louis Union Station! Where is the brunette?

Anyway, the ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ is a very good looking locomotive! Thumbs Up [tup]

The replica of the ‘Sherpa’ is a very different looking locomotive! A little water tank over the front part of the boiler and coal over the boiler behind the water. I can’t recall I have seen that before!Smile [:)]

I found this photo very interesting so I enhanced it a bit. Hope you don’t mind.

Fergie –  Saw a lot of icebergs close to your waters (between Greenland and Canada) coming back from the old country. Its a lot of water there.Smile [:)]

Allan –  You are right, there is a lot of moose running around in Sweden. Every other highway car accident is a collision with a moose or deer. Hope you had a good trip to Australia! The weather during my moose photo expedition was okay. Smile [:)]

Rob –  Racking up frequent flier miles? I just found out that they (United) credited me with only 1,068 + 1,068 miles for my flights across the Atlantic. Should be 4,272 miles each way. You can’t trust anyone.Grumpy [|(]

I don’t know what happened to all your photos?Question [?] They don’t show anymore.

I like those Mishaps on the MTC! Just feel sorry for the horse but I guess it survived.

Nick –  Thanks for the trip report!Thumbs Up [tup] Farnborough station, is that in the same town as Farnborough Air Show?Question [?] I guess the train you were riding was an electric running with power from a 3rd rail. At least that is what it looks like in your photo. I enhanced it a little bit so I could see the lower parts of the train. Hope that is okay.Whistling [:-^]

Nice photos from London.Thumbs Up [tup] I think I can see a tiny little bit of HMS Belfast on the other side of Tower Birdge. Is she still there? Question [?]

I am afraid I don’t know much about the Trevithick locomotive. Did they really use that big flywheel as a driver?Question [?]

CM3 –  Yes, I had too much rainy weather in Sweden.Grumpy [|(] No desert climate there. It was nice to come back to Phoenix and the triple digit temperatures.Yeah!! [yeah]

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. We had some weather here yesterday that Eric would have enjoyed - 86 degrees, 30-40 mph winds (remains of Ike) and no humidity. It's a lot cooler today. Gas is at $4.15 this morning (it's basically going up a dime every day since Friday).

Good day for New England sports teams. Red sox go to Tampa for three games starting day, Patriots won, and with a look toward the south, so did my Giants.

Good Morning America is doing a rail-related extravaganza which started this morning. Many scenes along the Boston and Albany with station stops at various points along the way. Nice to see some of the scenery from the home road. The train consist is a couple of Genesis units, several Superliners, a PRR parlor car and what looks to be a PRR business car.

Lars stopped by with comments and observations as well as a nice selection of books. The Knickerbocker tray brought back some memories. I remember a place at home that had a Knickerbocker clock - wonder how much that would bring on the memorabilia market today? Also, glad to see that our Giants are doing well.

Pete was in with many photos. I enjoyed Alan's photos from Germany and your shot of the King Edward I. The Burlington had quite an extensive steam program back in the day. For the record, Burlington Northern merger(s) occurred in 1970.

Rob visited with comments and other additions.  Retire to Northern Ontario - why not.  I'd be up in VT as far north as I could if I could afford it.

Eric was in with comments and some fine looking "small" locomotives. We have deer all over the place here; there are usually 6 or more in our parking lot when I leave in the evening. Nice looking Volvo - like the color.

Allan has returned - good to see you back.

Nick - Phonetic translations of Welsh? Do that and we can learn to speak Yorkshire (lol). Interesting thought playing Little Feat at 45. Your comments on "Hard Day's Night" were well taken. Remember very well when the Beatles appeared on TV for the first time in this country - Ed Sullivan, IIRC. My compliments on the Red Dragon picture.

OSP has been in with an eclectic selection of photos. I commented on the weather above - no rain as I said but a lot of electric problems in the region. Hope you managed to keep things dry as possible. We did o.k., but our friends in Kanawha County and over in Ohio did not fare as well. Nice selection of movies as well - Funny Farm I have not seen in awhile. Throw Momma ran here last week on our cable system.

Work safe

Here's something to enjoy regarding the Southern Pacific (SP) from a 1951 advertisement in my personal collection.

Did you hear what the Colonel said about the "Sunset Limited"

"WHAT A TRAIN, SUN! THE FLOWER OF NEW ORLEANS, THE BOAST OF TEXAS, THE SUNLIGHT OF ARIZONA, THE SENSATION OF HOLLYWOOD. ANOTHER OF SP'S WONDERFUL WAYS WEST!"

We're happy to say that thousands of Americans are finding our "Sunset Limited" a new and charming way to go West.

We think that you, too, will enjoy this sensational new "Streamlined Train With the Southern Accent." Especially with that New Orleans stopover. Luxury Pullman or Chair Car. Extra fare.

Your connections at New Orleans from, or two, points like Chicago, St. Louis, Washington, New York, etc., are good and offer fine streamliners. (New Orleans is a gourmet's and shopper's delight as you know.)

The "Sunset Limited"  takes you in 42 delightful hours through the heart of Texas, Southern Arizona's winter resort country, Palm Springs & Los Angeles.

There, you can connect with other great new S.P. streamliners, can return by another S.P. route. You see twice as much. The little map shows how.

Why not try it this winter? Or next summer? And meantime, why not let us send you our New Orleans folder, and full information about this new way to California?

Mail coupon below today

"SUNSET LIMITED" New Orleans-Los Angeles via Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Douglas, Bisbee, Tucson, Phoenix, Palm Springs. Connects at New Orleans with streamliners to and from Chicago, New York, Washington, other Eastern points.

The only good thing about the reverse holiday pay is Lars and Rob have not given me a rise in wages in years.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Yes with old equipment a tap seemed to work wondersSmile [:)] it was surprising what a bang on top of the TV would do when the picture was rollingApprove [^] Thinking about it must have been a far while back that TVs used to do thatYeah!! [yeah], with modern stuff all you can do is swear at it.Banged Head [banghead]

Normally I flew with Continental as they were the only ones to fly into Birmingham UK direct from the US but we are going to London this time.

Two good films on at the Emporium this weekApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Funny Farm and Throw Momma from the Train sound good for a laughLaugh [(-D] with the Stooges messing with rocket fuelShock [:O]Big Smile [:D]

A Hard Days Night has been playing on one of the film channels on TV here as well over the last weekApprove [^], as you say a band with the Midas touchYeah!! [yeah]. From She Loves You to Sgt. Pepper in a few short yearsBow [bow].

Another Our Place coincidenceAlien [alien] just reading an article about how those louvers in the chimney of the Jones goods was one of the first attempts to give drivers a better view by eliminating the drifting smoke. I believe the Jones goods were the first 4-6-0s in the UK as wellBow [bow].

I did at one time have a working timetable of the passenger and goods trains on the North Wales coast line in the late 1950sThumbs Up [tup] how I wish I had them nowSigh [sigh]. It will be good to see the photo of the Y9Thumbs Up [tup] have you any idea where Kipps isQuestion [?]; I imagine somewhere in the Glasgow area, perhaps near the large docks that was there then

Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup], I had not heard of the Lone Ranger name for that livery variation before, like itApprove [^]. If I recall the photos were taken in the evening with a low sun there used to be a fair bit of freight activity around 7 to 9 pm at that timeThumbs Up [tup].

Many thanks for the photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. It is strange but GW locomotives always seem to look better when in their own patchYeah!! [yeah] and love the workaday appearance of the ‘Duke' could have been Parkfield Road Bridge 45 years agoApprove [^]. Yes Evening Star the loco that worked the last Pines Express over the S&D I believe, I wonder whose idea it was to try the 9Fs on the heavy summer Saturday passenger trains over the S&D a job apparently they were very successful at.Bow [bow]

Well RUTH a round please and I will be back later.Thumbs Up [tup].
