Yup the first CLRV order was actually 1978-79 and the ALRV's are mid eighties builds, all haev ahd two or three complete rebuilds so it's almost time.Amazingly of the 300 CLRV's purchased 298 are still in service

Do look at the Bachman site , I noticed tonight that they had all the painted examples pictures up. I could see you happily running the St Louis one.They do run well, had one over at Heather's dad's tonight and man does it creep almost tie to tie. the motor is mounted below the floor as well so it has an interior begging for people to be put in the seats.

A pair of 14 roomette/4 double bedroom Pullmans ran on the "Belle," also between Kansas City and both end points.The southbound "Belle," train 1-101, had a 4:00 p.m. departure from Kansas City. It arrived in Shreveport at 3:00 a.m. where it split. Picture shows the car waiting for the canal bridge to lower.A 1958 shot of interurban car 620 running a charter on the old city line in St Catharines. The cars upbound on Geneva Street and will turn right onto St Paul ( something you can no longer do as St Paul is now one way in the other direction ) the car will pass in front of Niagara Central Hobbies just after it turns onto St Paul street.On an interesting sidenote the NS&T track was finally ug up and removed on Geneva and St Paul about two years ago. When we left the old country in 1969 they were thinking about having the museum in the North Tyneside area. I would have loved to have seen Bittern done up as Silver Link! I was too young for the bad winter of 1947 but I remember the big freeze of 1963 when the canal at the back of my old house was frozen and you could walk along it to Rugby and of course there was a lot of steam about then still.I thought I would look up in my old notes about the day I visited the museum and that brought back some fond memories, luckily it was the first notebook I picked up, I will have to look to see if I can find the photo album. It was on October 4th 1991 that Alan and went by car to Whitby calling at the Darlington Railway Museum then the Timothy Hackworth museum and Soho engine shed in Shildon Co. Durham. On the Saturday it was the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Gala and we had trips behind.Lambton Hetton & Joicey Collieries 0-6-2Tank No5LNER 0-8-0 No 901LNER K1 class 2-6-0 No 2005 BR Standard 2-6-0 No 76079BR Standard 2-6-4T No 80135SR Battle of Britain class 4-6-2 No 34072 257 SquadronAll these locos in one day.The Sunday is when we went to the Stephenson Railway Museum and saw Bittern as Silver Link, We also had two trips on the preserved line from the museum to Percy Main one was hauled by PECKETT 0-6-0 saddle tank Works number 1970 and the other by BAGNELL 0-6-0 ST Works No 2994 this loco was named ‘Thomas Burt MP'Next we moved south of the TYNE to the Tanfield Railway where we had a trip from Andrews House to visit the famous Causey Arch bridge, before heading to the other end of the line at Sunniside, then back to Andrews House. We were hauled by ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORN Works No 7298 named Progress. After seeing the fine collection of industrial locomotives there it was back to Grosmont.On the Monday before heading home we had time to travel on the NYMR from Grosmont to Pickering and back behind No 80135. On the way home we called to view the site of the Sheep Pasture Incline on the former Cromford and High Peak Railway.It really was a great weekend and I am really glad your post inspired me to look it up. Our Place really is a great place.I will be sure to post my photos from the England trip and wish you could have joined us.I never knew that there weren't any snakes in New Zealand, my kind of place.Just heard that Kevin Keegan is taking over as manager of the TOON (again). It is a very fine point at the moment with the National Museum in the UK with locomotives that are run on the main line with one engine needing a new cylinder block if it is to run again.I don't know if the reason for choosing the Acela over the X2000 has ever been told. The AeroTrains were sold to the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) in 1958 for suurban use between Chicago and Joliet, IL. Fact is though he figured he could cut down his maintenance responsibilities in old age by selling his home and moving into a rented apartment with the rent paid from the proceeds of the house sale. I think in a way this was quite a brave and sensible decision for him as when he got into his 80s he did not want to maintain a home so a rented apartment saved him worry. The person who bought his former home (a trad Canadian Mortgage and Loan design I think they are called) simply bulldozed it to build a massive house on the plot in the most bizarre French renaissance chateau style - I kid you not! What's wrong with traditional North American architectural house styles I ask? Some people must have more money than sense! Alan takes a few at a time and he says they are always glad to get them as the sell well.The Shamrock was a London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street express that left Euston at 4.45PM and arrived at Liverpool at 8.33pm.to connect with the night sailing to Ireland. A reference from 1960 I have found said it loaded to 14 coaches including the Silver Princess which was classified as a ‘First Reclining Chair Car'The Ulster Express ran from Euston to Heysham to connect with the Belfast overnight sailing. It left Euston at 6.20PM and arrived Heysham at 11.13 PM. These timings were slower than previous owing to the Electrification that was heading south from Crewe at the time. Just from the time of 5.18 to 7.44PM there were 6 named expresses due to pass through Rugby some with ex LMS Pacific locomotives, what a way to spend a summers evening. Unfortunately I lost my notes before 1980 but I have listed all the train trips and some by car to preserved railways since then. Southern Belle (KCS)
The Southern Belle was a named passenger train service offered by Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) from the 1940s through the 1960s, running between Kansas City, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana.
The service was inaugurated on September 2, 1940. To promote the new train, KCS held a beauty contest to find "Miss Southern Belle," a young woman whose image would be used in advertising materials systemwide. Local competitions were held before the train's launch in all of the cities that the KCS served. The ultimate winner of the competition, Margaret Landry Moore, was the winner of the local competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was selected as "Miss Southern Belle" at the final competition in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 24, 1940.[1] She briefly became a screen actress, being most famous for her cameo as Teresa Guadalupe in The Leopard Man (1943).

Equipment used
Just before inauguration, Pullman-Standard delivered three new lightweight passenger car sets to the KCS for use on the Southern Belle. Each set consisted of a combination baggage-RPO-dormitory (car numbers 64, 65 and 66), a 74-seat coach chair car (cars 234, Pittsburg; 235, Joplin; and 236, Texarkana), and a dining-observation car (car numbers 54, Kansas City; 55, Shreveport; and 56, New Orleans).
The KCS rebuilt five heavyweight Pullman sleepers for use on the Southern Belle, making them look like their lightweight counterparts and increasing the number of double bedrooms in each. Cars Siloam Springs (formerly McBurney) and Sulphur Springs (formerly McLarty) were rebuilt in time for the train's inauguration. Initially, Pullman service was only offered between New Orleans and Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1941, car Barksdale (formerly McAllisterville) was added to the train's operation when Pullman service was extended from Shreveport to Kansas City. The first two rebuilt cars were joined a few months later by rebuilt cars State Capital (formerly McElheran) and Mena (formerly McKullo) on the southern leg of the train's schedule.
After World War II, the train was re-equipped with some new cars built in 1948 by American Car and Foundry

Allan - I understand what you are saying, but you can never have too much antidote. Kind of like the old story about why the guy drank so much. He said, "I do it to keep the snakes away. You don't see any around here, so it must work."
Pete - "Short" cars carry folks not riding for the full length of a run. For example, say a train runs from Cincinnati to Washington, DC. Some cars would carry passengers running from one terminal to another. Passengers riding from Cincinnati to White Sulphur Springs, for example, would ride in a so-called "short" car since they were not making the entire trip. IOW, it has nothing do with the length of the car.

KCS 1950 Passenger Service - Part Two - "Flying Crow"
"Flying Crow," operations on the KCS also centered on Shreveport. The southbound "Crow," train 5-15, departed Kansas City at 9:35 p.m. and arrived in Shreveport at 12:10 p.m. the next day. Trains 5 and 15 split at Shreveport.
Train 15 left Shreveport at 1:40 p.m. and pulled into Port Arthur at 8:00 p.m. that evening. Train 15 carried chair cars from Kansas City to Port Arthur. Train 5, operating to New Orleans, left Shreveport at 12:45 p.m. with an arrival at the Crescent City's Rampart St. Station nine hours later. It carried chair cars from Kansas City to New Orleans.
The northbound "Flying Crow" carried train numbers 6-16. Both trains converged on Shreveport, were combined, and ran together from there to Kansas City.
Train 16 departed Port Arthur at 10:30 a.m. with a 4:10 p.m. arrival in Shreveport. Train 6 left New Orleans at 7:45 a.m. and pulled into Shreveport at 4:25 p.m.
The combined "Crow," (now train 6-16) departed Shreveport at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:45 a.m. next morning arrival at Kansas City. 6-16 also carried the 14 roomette/4 double bedroom Shreveport-St. Louis Pullman as far as Texarkana where it was handed off to MP 32, the northbound "Sunshine Special."
Tomorrow we'll take a look at the "Southern Belle."

great info on KCS passenger trains and a couple nice photo's to boot I have to say though that early KCS paint scheme is a tad loud , not as loud as some of the Seaboard or Atlantic Coast Line one's though however .

And yes nine systems under four companies was a tad insane, no rate system ofr transfer system in common, one heck of a mess. By know means is the TTC perfect but at least you can travel multi-modal on the same fare schedual and transfer between them,drastic improvement.

Allan - do you recall seeing the Silver Link loco and train in action back in the day? Or perhaps only in its post war guise. Sounds to me like you need to be planning a UK trip around the time of the anniversary of the 1938 record breaking runs! Seriously, do you ever get back to the ‘old country' - it's a lot easier said than done from your part of the globe I'd guess.
Talking of which - Pete - good to know you still plan a a visit - if we can do a mini ‘our place' rendezvous UK side as you suggest that would be great. A few pints at choice west midlands pubs (Holden's Mild...) combined with a west mids rover ticket or a Severn Valley trip - it's a date to clear the diary for in my view.
Turning to learning things - I'd heard of the Workington Steam shed but did not realise there was plan to move it to Loughborough - how much is that costing?
Amazing really that the shed has been lying more or less idle since 1968 - goes to show the state of the economy and land value in Workington I guess.

That is a good museum in North Tyneside I am sure Allan will know the area well. I had a look at the Bachmann web site; those look great models of the Witt streetcars. I noticed on the St Louis one it had ‘UR' on the side, did this stand for Urban Railroad do you know. It would really add to the models if they did have passengers on board.

I did not know about the X2000 was in fact a class X2. It is all the more surprising Amtrak did not order the X2s considering how well it performed, I believe there has been problems with the Acelas causing their withdrawal from service for a time fairly recently.

Thanks for the explanation on the ‘short cars'. It has made me think about if, in the 1950s, the named trains were reservation only like today's Amtrak. If they were they could have filled up the seats of the short car for different stages of the journey or was it turn up and hope for a seat.
DL It would be great if it was at all possible you could join us in St Louis. I am sure we be able to draw up a great itinerary for some Holden's pubs in the West Midlands, perhaps a visit to the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley for some Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild, there is a Holden pub just up the road from the Beacon and great sandwich shop by the bus stop.
Many thanks for the links to the Workington Shed Project, I will have to look out in the railway magazines for any more news. No doubt it will cost a lot of money but what an attraction for the GCR it would be, in between trains at Loughbourough a DMU trip to the shed would be great.
The memories of the staff as you say are well worth reading although very sad, as the shed and the work ran down. I noticed in the first memory, the gentleman served at Rugby Shed for a while. It would be great to know what the Workington drivers thought of those Metro-Vick Co-Bos diesels I see there was a couple of them in the photos. Thanks for sharing.

X2000 service concept means basically that the ticket price includes a meal that will be served at your seat. Just like the airlines used to do and still do over the Atlantic. Kansas City Southern Passenger Service in 1950 - Part Three "Southern Belle"
The "Southern Belle," trains 1-101 and 2-102 were the pride of the railroad. Again, everything happened at Shreveport.
The "Belle" carried chair cars between Kansas City and New Orleans and Kansas City and Port Arthur. Diners operated between Kansas City and both end points and a tavern lounge observation between Kansas City and New Orleans. A pair of 14 roomette/4 double bedroom Pullmans ran on the "Belle," also between Kansas City and both end points.
The southbound "Belle," train 1-101, had a 4:00 p.m. departure from Kansas City. It arrived in Shreveport at 3:00 a.m. where it split. Train 1 left Shreveport at 3:15 a.m. en route to New Orleans where it arrived at 10:00 a.m. Train 101 left Shreveport at 3:30 a.m. reaching Port Arthur at 9:00 a.m.
Northbound, the "Belle" left Port Arthur at 4:20 p.m. as train 102. Train 2 departed New Orleans at 4:00 p.m. Train 102 was in Shreveport at 10:20 p.m. and train 2 arrived about 25 minutes later. Combined, train 102-2 departed Shreveport at 11:00 p.m. and was in Kansas City the next morning at 10 o'clock.
P.S. There is one more short item to go on KCS which deals with their unnamed trains 9 and 10. Then I plan to return to New England-Canada service. Awhile back we got everybody out of North Station. I figure that it's about time to get ‘em back home.

He suggested that it was an embarrasment ( and is )that such a large seemingly world class city was without a rail link to it's main airport. Certain stuff hit the fan as a result. It's optional decoder for those who are of the DCC vein, it has a dummy plug for those like me who blissfully stay ignorant of DCC.

A shot of the interior, the motor and flywheels are below the floorboards small but powerfull the car runs smoothly and quietly almost creeps tie to tie out of the box !

A 1958 shot of interurban car 620 running a charter on the old city line in St Catharines. The cars upbound on Geneva Street and will turn right onto St Paul ( something you can no longer do as St Paul is now one way in the other direction ) the car will pass in front of Niagara Central Hobbies just after it turns onto St Paul street.On an interesting sidenote the NS&T track was finally ug up and removed on Geneva and St Paul about two years ago. I remember the Hobby shop selling small chunks of it as paper weights.

USA #7765 is a small locomotive. The guidebook says it was built in 1943 and is 150HP.

It would be very interesting to know the politics behind Amtrak ordering the Acela when they had seen at first hand the X2000 and the ICE.
If you do go to the Second Class Saloon go in disguise and take BORIS and LEON with you, they are still very upset about their loss in the Dart's Contest. They are very cautious and they see who gets off the Can-Am RDCs at the nearby Mountain Village station.

CM3 Many thanks for the KCS Southern Belle I have re-read Toms post and it is good to know the timings of the Belle. I noticed there was a lot less time in Shreveport with the Southern Belles than the Flying Crow.
LARS I still wonder why the critters wanted to get into the Penthouse Suite so badly, see I have a weekend away and they run amok. I don't think BORIS would still be getting the large PPF jar if you knew what I found while cleaning his shed, but since my promotion I am going to be a. There surely can't be a worse ‘Penalty' than cleaning BORIS's shed after one of his ‘Friends' exploded unless it is putting my Bathams through a cooler. .

Another great selection from the Larsman Mobile. Great painting on the 25 years of the ND&C cover. It surprises me how many of those flat crossings there are over here they are not common in the UK. The Switching Terminal at Maybrook looks a very interesting read, they are generally great books written by an historical society.

DL If you E-mail the editor of Backtrack it may be worth asking if there are any copies of the December issue left, another good place is in the second hand magazines at preserved lines.
Does that 63 issue of MR say in what train the Silver Princess was in at the time. The article did say that when the car was modified in 1956 it was one of the first cars in maroon where as the other cars at the time were in the carmine and cream livery.
The two Alans have been on a few visits to Holden's pubs so should know the best ones, a visit to the Great Western in Wolverhampton is a must, and it is near the station.
TOM I would be interesting to know where the CPR 4-4-4 # 2928 was when we visited ExpoRail, I am sure we would have remembered the fine looking locomotive if we had seen her.AH I see Rob has given an answer

Pete. That Stephenson Railway Museum at Chirton, not far from Wallsend the old home town, is in an area we used to explore the old dis-used coal wagonway`s as kids, collected a lot of coal droppings there in the big snow of the winter of 1947, you really brought back such a lot of memories of my youth! When we left the old country in 1969 they were thinking about having the museum in the North Tyneside area. I would have loved to have seen Bittern done up as Silver Link! Am looking forward to all those pics you, the Alan`s, and Dan will have to share later on. Wish I could make the trip, and I will try hard not to get VERY jealous about it! Enjoyed all your posts and pics, thanks.
Rob. Looking forward to the next lot of pics of the diesel oddities, some nice shots of your DCC installation in your model trolleys, some very neat work! Interesting to read your comments on the Acela. I had thought that they were a direct purchase resulting from the x2000 tests, and where Americanized copies. You learn something new every day.
Allan-I'm glad that you liked the witt shots. I have to confess though ,no work there is really mine other than snapping the bits together. The wiring done, you just have to line up the pin conectors on which ever set up you wish. The dummy plug for DC or the decoder if you want to run DCC
That museum sight sounds interesting,I hope you kept a couple lumps of that coal for posterity.

ALLAN I though that link to the Stephenson Railway Museum might bring back memories for you. Many thanks for sharing them with us. I was too young for the bad winter of 1947 but I remember the big freeze of 1963 when the canal at the back of my old house was frozen and you could walk along it to Rugby and of course there was a lot of steam about then still.
I thought I would look up in my old notes about the day I visited the museum and that brought back some fond memories, luckily it was the first notebook I picked up, I will have to look to see if I can find the photo album. It was on October 4th 1991 that Alan and went by car to Whitby calling at the Darlington Railway Museum then the Timothy Hackworth museum and Soho engine shed in Shildon Co. Durham.
On the Saturday it was the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Gala and we had trips behind.

The Sunday is when we went to the Stephenson Railway Museum and saw Bittern as Silver Link, We also had two trips on the preserved line from the museum to Percy Main one was hauled by PECKETT 0-6-0 saddle tank Works number 1970 and the other by BAGNELL 0-6-0 ST Works No 2994 this loco was named ‘Thomas Burt MP'
Next we moved south of the TYNE to the Tanfield Railway where we had a trip from Andrews House to visit the famous Causey Arch bridge, before heading to the other end of the line at Sunniside, then back to Andrews House. We were hauled by ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORN Works No 7298 named Progress. After seeing the fine collection of industrial locomotives there it was back to Grosmont.
On the Monday before heading home we had time to travel on the NYMR from Grosmont to Pickering and back behind No 80135. On the way home we called to view the site of the Sheep Pasture Incline on the former Cromford and High Peak Railway.
It really was a great weekend and I am really glad your post inspired me to look it up. Our Place really is a great place.
I will be sure to post my photos from the England trip and wish you could have joined us.
I never knew that there weren't any snakes in New Zealand, my kind of place.
Just heard that Kevin Keegan is taking over as manager of the TOON (again). After a terrible game against Manchester United at the weekend losing to SIX second-half goals they have come back tonight to win 4-1 against Stoke city in the Cup.

ROB Glad you enjoyed the photos. Yes I feel sad when a preserved item as been radically altered from what is once was after being saved. It is a very fine point at the moment with the National Museum in the UK with locomotives that are run on the main line with one engine needing a new cylinder block if it is to run again.
I don't know if the reason for choosing the Acela over the X2000 has ever been told. But as Eric said the X2000 performed extremely well on the trains and revenue earning runs it done over here, I am still why it was not chosen.
Looks as though I have got excited with my post tonight, as it is getting quite long, I hope you enjoy the reminiscences. By the way the beer was Sam Smiths in Whitby and Strongarm in the pub in Grosmont.

But his relationship with his manager deteriorated to the point of no return. Perhaps the finest 3rd baseman the Cardinals ever had. A shame that personalities got in the way . . . he'd never have made it in the things I had to do to earn a pay check. Oh well . . . I too think St. Louis got the better of the deal, considering . . .

It was fun thinking ‘n planning for a visit to the UK a few months ago . . . especially when it appeared that we'd get Nick <nickinwestwales> out from "hiding." But, not to be - even the best of plans seem to get sidetracked. Looking back on it - had I "locked in" on the air fares at the time, I'd have gotten a good deal in comparison with those of today. But those were coach ‘n my preference is 1st class for flights of that duration. Those prices were absolutely staggering - no way.
Should you ‘n Pete "connect," by all means hoist one to cheer "Our" Place!
The way we schedule our Rendezvous for "Our" Place is by vote of those attending them. In other words the guys who show up for Rendezvous III get to decide on IV, etc.
Maybe some day we'll return to Canada - but right now, it looks like the USA for 2009 as there's a "pitch" for West Virginia by "you know who"! <grin>

It is worth mentioning that our regulars have seen these before - not the same shots -but variations of 'em that were taken during Rendezvous II in May 'n Posted at the bar w/descriptions.
(1) Rock Island AeroTrain - One of two built in 1955, each trainset comprised a futuristic locomotive along with 10 cars to accommodate about 400 passengers. Designed by GM this projected low-cost train was tested by the New York Central, Pennsylvania and Union Pacific railroads and demonstrated to many others. None were ordered. The AeroTrains were sold to the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) in 1958 for suurban use between Chicago and Joliet, IL. In less than a decade they were discontinued. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>
#2 Wabash 3573 2-6-0 Mogul. Built in Rhode Island - 1899. Last steam on the Wabash.
#3 Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY) #12321. 34-foot wooden boxcar. Built in 1901 by American Car & Foundry (ACF)
#4 US Army #7765. Built in 1943 by GE. 150 hp industrial model B-50. - and -
US Army #1149. Built in Davenport, IA - 1954. Gas turbine-mechanical experimental unit.
#5 Union Pacific #913140 Flatcar. Built by UP - 1951. One piece cast steel body, UP class F50-15 50 ton capacity. Interesting load!

Rob - nice shots of the NS&T - very period atmosphere - that bridge with the streetcar track beside the road in the vertical position frames a great picture - nice work by the photographer.
Funnily enough, had my late uncle owned his house in Toronto I think we as a family might well have held on to it for a year or two as a vacation base (it was out near Bay View Village near the 401 a short walk from the newish TTC station built there). Fact is though he figured he could cut down his maintenance responsibilities in old age by selling his home and moving into a rented apartment with the rent paid from the proceeds of the house sale. I think in a way this was quite a brave and sensible decision for him as when he got into his 80s he did not want to maintain a home so a rented apartment saved him worry. The person who bought his former home (a trad Canadian Mortgage and Loan design I think they are called) simply bulldozed it to build a massive house on the plot in the most bizarre French renaissance chateau style - I kid you not! What's wrong with traditional North American architectural house styles I ask? Some people must have more money than sense! Of course after he died we had to terminate the rental lease pretty quickly.
Interesting comments on the airport link - is that Federal vs Provincial spat then? What is good is that a politician through a rail link worth mentioning - which suggests passenger rail is still a mode of transport with some life left in it!
Pete - I e-mailed Backtrack chap (in fact I copied your email address in so I hope you saw it - if not we've got a communication problem) - he replied to today to thank me and say he had copy of 1963 Modern Railways and would look up the reference I sent.
I'll keep an eye out for a Backtrack back number at a preserved railway - as that is the cheap way to procure one AND help a preservation project of some sort!
The 1963 pic showed the carriage in Maroon as the Ulster Lounge in the "Shamrock" consist. It said after 1956 it had been used in the "Ulster Express" - both LMR trains I presume on the London Holyhead route. After delivery in 1947 it had been used on the East Coast route (presumably in stainless steel ‘livery').
Great note book synopsis by the way! I firmly trust that Tom's suggestion that the chilled beer is something you will have got acclimatised to does not in fact come to pass!

Those first class air line fares on the scheduled airlines - I just don't know who pays them - I guess they keep making economy worse and worse and then people at the margins say enough is enough and trade up to first so that is how they make the money out of them. I reckon you could take a Cunard transatlantic sailing for the cost of some of the fares. The smallest ship cabin could never be worse than the flight!
Allan - thanks for the round and interesting to read your memories of the 1947 winter (plus the Silver Link memories). For someone unable to know anything from the classic era (I'm just too young I'm afraid) the personal memories that people put out in Our Place really bring to life for me what I only see on web pages and in books. I really enjoy reading it (and that goes for a variety of people's posts on the site!).
