I can't decide on one, so here is my list:
DIESIL:
BL-2, Bombardier HR616, "Sharknose" and Genisis.
ELECTRIC:
B&O's B-B NOS (only in baltimore, all gone!), GG1, Acela, HHP-8, TGV, AEM-7 and E44s.
STEAM:
John Bull (Don't ask why), 4-4-0 American, Big Boy, and K-4s.

Steam: N&W J Class 4-8-4s .......... in particular The 611

Diesel: NS SD-70's

Everyone has there favorites and some wouldnt like them if they had to run them. but this is america ( or what is left of it) so From a guy that has to run these things here is my favorite. Until the ns started cutting back the sd70s on power they was my favorite they are still good but only in trailing units the sd60 is a better unit in the lead. the dash 9 unit somebody voted for is a good unit ( in a train other than mine) and all units in conventional cab ( the wide body isnt bad as long as its not a desk top ) are prefered.

1.) Alco PA/RS-3
2.) E unit (now I feel like a traitor to Alco)
3.) M-100000 (the first diesel, no matter what those CB&Q fans say)
4.) VO-1000/Centipede/Shark

I would have to say CP's SD40-2. I grew up watching them race across the prairies and have always admired the sound their horns made in the middle of a January night.

Ok,
So I am sorta biased, due to what I do for a living, but give me a pair of MK1500Ds, (what is now know as the new GP 15)and get out of the way.
Lacking them, a pair of SW9s.
Sure, theMKs are ugly. real ugly.
But MU a pair, put a new set of shoes on them, and go to town switching.
And if you have to, you can use them for road power on a 100 car train.
No glamor, no glitter, but they will work their trucks off if you need them to!

First, and all-time fav? Central of Georgia SD7#201, In the paint job God ment for it, Blue and Grey, with eagle wings. A Santa Fe Model "E." The SCL SD45-2, GP59#4610 for The Southern Railway System, a blue 'n white Tennessee Central RS3 with a steam ginny, Carolina Northwestern RS11 in Tuxedo long hood forward, the Louisvile & Nashville U25B, and you know, all of the other roads were great too! Last, not least, when he carried the great seal of the United States of America, Seaboard Coast Line's Spirit of '76. Made in America! Allen/Backyard.

The GP-30 and RS-1325!
It was a treat when the B&O local came to Taylorville with a GP-30, a big change from the usual GP9's or GP7's, the ride to Pana and back was railfan heaven....
C&IM's pair of RS-1325's was just different, fun to ride and watch them lug coal loads up out of the load yard at Peabody's #10 mine and spot emptys up on the "HILL".

CPR 2816 - rode behind her last June on CPR's own coaches, not the GO train

The locomotive that brings back the most memories for me is the E unit the New Haven used. It wasn't so much the locomotive but the whistle. For some reason, the New Haven had a peculiar whistle, and it didn't sound like an air horn. I last heard one (talk about poor taste in movies) in the original Superman movie- where Lex Luthor's eeeevil henchman is going into Lex's hideout under cover of a NH commuter departing Grand Central Station.
I have been fascinated by GG-1's but have never seen one "in real life". I wonder what the inside was like?
