Hello all. I've just been informed by a very credible source that frequent poster Wanswheel, who came up with some of the most remakable posts ever seen on the Forum, has been silenced and blocked from further postings.
If this is so, I'm sure others beside myself would certainly like to know the reasons why.
I'm listening, and I'm prepared to be fair.
Yes, as would I. No one has contributed more meaningful, historic and inspirational posts as Wanswheel. Lets be fair in all ways and hear what has happened.
If that news is true, I too would certainly like to know why.
His profile is still up, and posts made by him still bear his name, so I don't think he's been banished.
I can't think of any reason he'd be under moderation, but I could have missed something.
Patience may pay off.

Several years back he was elected to be the official archives researcher (or something like that). I do not remember how votes were in favor of his election, but there was not a single vote against his being granted that position.

Indeed!
I woud have to concure with what each individual Poster has noted in this THREAD! Mike (Wanswheel) has been a valued resource, as well as a resourceful researcher. One who has added, rather than retracted from The Forum experience! I think that is a position carried for many years around here by many other Forum Posters.
This is certainly a free Forum, maintained by TRAINS {Kalmbach}; and enjoyed as an adjunct priviledge by many subscribers of those publication(s); Under which, we post at their pleasure, and rules.
BUT having been a subscriber for time longer than that indicated by current posting counters... I for one would appreciate an explanation for the withdrawal of Wanswheel (Mike's) priviledges on The Forum.
I also would like to know wherein our good friend has supposedly erred--and I trust that if the action is the result of a false report he will speedily be reinstated.
I have never noticed his wording in any way to be forbidden by the rules. Did he unwittingly violate the rules within the body of something which he copied and sent to us?
The only thing I can think of would be the numerous links he included in his posts, which we all enjoy. If there were copyright issues, someone might have complained, possibly from outside the fora and Kalmbach.
I'm pretty sure everything he shared was in the public domain, or would be considered fair use, but you never know.
If that were the case, I think I'd take it seriously, too, although barring actual legal action/threats, I'd think a simple warning would be sufficient, and maybe a reminder for us all of potential pitfalls in that area.
I hope this is not true.
Wanswheel made very significant positive contributions to the discussions.

That doesn't mean anything. My previous incarnation has been locked since December, but all my posts as "SD70M-2Dude" are still in existence under that name. I can even log in to that account and comment on Newswire stories with it, but if I try going to any of the blogs or forums I get an error page instead, informing me that my account has been locked.
To an outside observer it appears as though I simply stopped posting.
Going through the motions of creating a new account was annoying, but I have no doubt Sir Wanswheel will be back, and I very much look forward to his return.
Greetings from Alberta

tree68 SD70Dude That doesn't mean anything. I don't disagree. Perhaps what I'm thinking of occurs when someone cancels their account. I know there are folks who haven't been around in ages whose accounts still look active. Thanks for the clarification.

Something about the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. I posted the text of newspaper article around Sept. 8, which Brian quickly deleted and put me on moderation.

IIRC the users showing as 'anonymous' date from years ago when there was no authentication required - you could change your username at will.
About the copyright issue, I only remember Wanswheel posting images from archive.org which is specifically limited to lapsed copyrights or true public domain material. Some other sites allow you to link/post their images if the source is explicitly shown.

MikeF90About the copyright issue,...
No doubt you're right. I was just throwing that out as a possibility in view of the many linked items he brought to his informative posts.
It's also possible that his absence has nothing to do with being tossed, but might be related to a personal issue of some sort.
Thanks to all speakers of kindly words and plus sign.
wanswheel Thanks to all speakers of kindly words and plus sign.
You are welcome, sir!
Now, a thing about copyrighted material. If any of the various sites Wanswheel has gotten his material from are putting it on the 'Net for all to see and enjoy, and this includes material from on-line librarys, university librarys, and so forth, copyrights aren't, or shouldn't be an issue. If the material IS copyrighted, or has to be paid for (Pinterest springs to mind) that source lets you know right up front.
I would like to hear from the Kalmbach staff on this. They can PM me if they like, I can keep a secret, even if I don't agree with it.

That's not at all how it works. In a nutshell....since Kalmbach receives advertising revenue through the operation of this forum, any content contained herein qualifies as "Business use". Technically it doesn't matter if a staffer or one of us posts something here, since the forum generates a revenue stream, the "for personal, non-business use" permission to use no longer applies.
If someone with an intellectual property right sees their protected material being used in a fashion they do not approve of, then notifies Kalmbach to "cease and desist", they either have to take steps to remove the offending material or face liability.
I doubt they would want to pay royalties to rights holders, so the alternativea are to either neutralize the source, or close the forum.
I like Wanswheel, enjoy his posts, and have never complained about a single one. But there are people out there who make their livings persuing intellectual property rights claims. My guess is that one of those people ran a search for their own protected material, and found some here.
When you have Euclid and BaltACD seeing eye to eye you know something existential is in play...thanks to everyone that has posted rallying behind this. Lets get some answers, get this fixed, restore Wanswheel and sanity so we can get back to the good stuff!

You know guys, businesses and those entrusted with making others money are often so focused on an issue that they become blind to other important things, and eventually get blindsided because of those other important things. There appears to be a loose end dangling in the wind now. A very, very loose end at that! And when someone is forced to see it, ultimately after all the dust settles, someone (“someone”) could become a very adept singer singing one of Johnny Cash’s famous songs, the one about Folsom, if the forum knows what I might be alluding to …

Sir Dude, for me to abandon wanswheel screenname I would have to abandon all the material I posted about my father and my grandfather. I cannot.

Well I'm not sure what Wanswheel did, but I'm very sure he never "...shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die..."
I'm a Johnny Cash fan from way back, before it was cool for Yankees to be one!
