Mook, I forgot you don't have opposable thumbs, guess you would have been using a "Spork" anyway.

As an "older person" that has done certain things the same way for so many years, I don't much care for changes either; seems we have no choice but "go with the flow".

Now, How do I change font sizes and colors?!

Right now, I'm on a Mac laptop, my computer is down, and the "tool bar" that shows up for me to reply shows none of that.  (MacBook & Safari)

Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

Mookie, I agree with you about the reaction to the new forum format, but people don't tend to like change.   At my age I especially don't like change, but I'll play with it and eventually get used to it.   So far, I see a few things better and a few things worse.

The CB is like a port in a storm - no matter how bad, you can always duck in here and get away from all the problems.

I haven't found getting around is too much of a problem.  But then I just post and go and don't do anything too fancy.

Now back to more important matters:  where is mah fork?

I heard a rumor that we would hit 30 degrees tonite.  And a stiff north wind.  And with a lake full of all that water, where you can fish in your car from the parking lots (as soon as they open the park again), will we have to take ice fishing equipment?

And for your consideration - there are a lot of squirrels in said park.  Do squirrels swim?  Almost all the trees are standing in water now.  And do they dive to find those acorns they buried?

Inquiring minds want to know.

In conclusion, just remember if you are east of Nebraska - you have a chance of frost/north winds coming!

Certainly true in the other direction. Got FROST here.

As for the squirrels, Nigel says if they can water ski, they probably can scuba too! (remember "Twiggy" videos?)...Nigel just gets scolded by the red squirrel on the fencetops every so often. He just barks back.

Mookie, it is well you decided not to come down and wave to me Thursday morning: 1) My roomette was on the wrong side of the train (away from the station). 2) We were about five hours late arriving in Lincoln--two hours late leaving Chicago; we had to wait for the Capitol Limited and the Lake Shore Limited. I do not know how we lost the rest of the time--I went to sleep before we left Ottumwa. As it was, we were almost eight hours late arriving in Salt Lake CIty, so I again had two nights' sleep after leaving Chicago.

I have sorted through my mail--and took some that Katie failed to keep for herself up to her, but I still need to go through my newspapers.

I just remembered an interesting combination I saw on several cars yesterday: reporting mark CATX--with the print of a cat's paw near it.

We are in the Land of No Trains again, and this time we have strong winds and rain to contend with as well (our gauge read four inches of the stuff after storms Thursday morning and this morning.  Tonight our temperature goes down into the low 40s, and tomorrow the high is in the mid-40s.

Other than being too cold too quickly, we're loving it up here...the maples are very brilliant red and orange.

Johnny, I saw my first CATX cars a few years ago during Mookiefest...talk about a big litter-box!

Well, it was a nice day on the railroad - sunny, warm, just a bit breezy.  Enough riders to make it worthwhile, but not too many to handle.

But I was mightily surprised when I arrived in town and saw that last week's beautiful colors were pretty much gone - fallen to the ground due to the wind.  And tomorrow, it's supposed to rain...  It'll probably be chilly, too...

Water + leaves on the tracks does not make for a happy engineer!

A couple sources say that CATX is assigned to General American Marks Company (probably just a 'holder' or 'nominee' for leasing company GATX).

This thread from about 10 years ago has a lot more info on the cars and their service (post by DSMTM near the bottom of the page): CATX 5151 covered hopper at http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,693724 (You'll see a familiar nom de rail there, too - Carl !)

From what I gather in the linked thread, the reporting marks and graphic are litter-ally appropriate.

Definitely frost on the pumpkin here in Old Forge this morning!  Reported temp of +32F, and the truck said it was +31F...

Gonna be a busy day today on the railroad.  Yesterday the weather was beyond miserable.  Today is going to be sunny, if cool (40s).

Busy day!  Saw 16 engines.  99% were on a train of some kind.  2 were NS that went around the wye, all by themselves.  In a BNSF yard, and since I like NS, I was pleased with that!  And a very mellow sounding CP in Dark Husker Red.

We were trackside about 2 hours.

Then went to our favorite city park.  You know - the dam on the east edge of the city, 112 acres that holds back major rainwater.  They closed it for a few days after last Tuesday's 8-10 inches of rain.  Today, the ducks & geese had to get off the picnic tables, the squirrels took off the scuba gear and they were launching one Hobie paddle boat from the parking lot.  1/2 of the dock was still under water.  Tuesday they stock about 3K trout.  Perfect!

Weather around 65-70 during the day with no rain.  No problem there!

Busy day!

Same here.  Just over 200 people between two trains, and I was the only crew member on the train (not counting the engineer).  Kept me hopping!

Weather around 65-70 during the day with no rain.  No problem there!

You can send that warm stuff here - I'm not sure it got above +45F all day today, after a sub-freezing start.  At least I didn't have to work in the rain - it never got worse than cloudy all day, and the sun did peek out from time to time.

Now I'm home, and it's raining, but now I don't care...

Stupid Zone Revisited: Trucker gets lowboy stuck on crossing in LA, Train crew in hospital because of stupid behavior of road agency and trucker. Close the crossing until the approach grades are fixed.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/louisiana-train-derailment-injures-2/

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/06/us-usa-louisiana-derailment-idUSKCN0HV0PF20141006

It appears a truck stop located on the opposite side of the tracks from US165 was where the trucker was headed to/from , connected by a state highway (LA-2), a main drag in Mer Rouge. Being a state road, there will be questions asked. UNLESS the lowboy was defective, somebody responsible for the road's maintenance and design will be squirming in the hot seat .
