Saw a news item from one of the local channels yesterday about a young teenage Omaha boy who posted a "selfie" with Warren and Paul sitting on a bench behind him. The media was suggesting that it was the greatest selfie ever.

The media has a problem with perspective sometimes. But the gentlemen were nice enough to pose for pictures with a young lady that was having a birthday. She got a kiss on the cheek from Sir Paul. She was young enough that it made me wonder if she really knew who Sir Paul or even Warren really were, other than two older men sitting on a park bench.

SJ, the Beatles' music is still very popular in all generations. My older daughter said that she gave her eight-year-old daughter (the inscrutable one) six Beatles CDs to listen to, and not a peep out of her for the entire day! Emily has some favorites now. (My other daughter made a pilgrimage to the Dakota Hotel--John Lennon's home in New York City--about 12 years ago.) The point is, just about everybody of any age may have an idea of who Sir Paul is, despite the fact that his 15 minutes of real fame was 40-50 years ago.(Somewhat tangentially, I recently took a Facebook quiz asking which Beatles tune described my life. I got Here Comes The Sun. For some reason, Fool on the Hill must not have been in the running.)

While I enjoy a Beatles song every now and then as much as anyone, one of my favored satellite radio channels seems to play a number by either the Beatles themselves, or a member thereof, about every half hour. After a while it gets tiring. Usually it's paired with a Stones song, so you can get tired of hearing both groups...
I was fortunate to grow up at a time when "middle of the road" radio included the likes of Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como. Yet with a turn of the dial, I could listen to top 40 rock and roll on any of three different stations - including legendary powerhouse CKLW in Windsor, across the Detroit River.
Occasionally I listen to another Canadian station that plays "adult contemporary." For the most part, I enjoy what they have to offer. Unfortunately, our local US stations seem to be populated by air personalities who are altogether taken with themselves. Just shut up and play some music!

I finally got to spend a little one-on-one time with grandson Nico (6) while hunting for the train that never came (on Illinois Railnet, at Oswego). I showed him a few things, like where another track had branched off the only existing line through town, the wooden fillers for spike holes, where the chute for the old elevator was, the guardrail on the track over a small bridge in town, a natural tunnel through overhanging trees, the sign with the "W" on it, and many other things...anything but a train. This kid is very observant--noticed that the cars slowed down to cross the busiest of the three crossings downtown (I asked him why he thought that might be, and he agreed with me that the pavement was pretty rough there). He noted that the flangeways in one crossing appeared to have been cut by the flanges themselves through fresh asphalt, and the street was too narrow for two cars to meet (it was a bike path, but had its own grade crossing, with flashers).Not only was Nico observant, but his observations "took"--later on he went down to the tracks again with his dad, and gave him an earful of the things Grandpa told him. I think he'll be looking forward to spending a little more time with Grandpa--hopefully in a more active area.

Nice, cool morning - just before full sunrise. Good fishing weather before the big heat wave. Went to our 2nd favorite lake to maybe catch carp.
I don't fish any more, so I just soak up the sights and sounds. It was still fairly quiet, parked off the busy street that runs around the lake. 3 herons (quicky marriage, fast egg hatching and now almost ready to head south if necessary) and the 4 sibling mallards, still hanging around together. My memories of summer years ago always included warm, lazy days and the sound of single engine planes overhead. This was one of those mornings.
Watched an older man with an older black lab arrive in a car. They seem to come to this lake daily so the dog can get into the water and swim - probably for arthritis. Then a long slow walk around part of the lake, the dog taking the lead and going exactly where it wants to go and the man following for however long it takes. Today it was about an hour.
There is an island that is attached to the street by a man-made berm and one man arrived to fish off the island while another man arrived with a Chihuahua, so the dog could run around the island and not get into trouble. I love dogs and cats, so watching them is always fun.
Meanwhile, the old man and old dog came back from their walk and went out on the island. I thought there would be trouble with the 2 dogs, but they greeted each other like old friends and I think the old Lab was actually smiling. Then the Chihuahua caught sight of the old man and started barking furiously. The old man backed off and called his dog and went back across the berm to his car. Not having someone to "terrify", the little barker went after the other man on the island. He just kept fishing. (Right on!)
But what irritated me is that the owner of the yappy dog was sitting at a picnic table, ignoring his dog and talking on a cell phone. I wanted to go out there and grab his phone and with my best casting maneuver, throw his phone in the lake and holler "be responsible for your dog!".
My casting abilities flashed before my eyes and I saw the phone either behind me on the ground before the throw or about 3 feet in front of both of us, in a tree.
So I watched the old man lift the old dog into the car, fastened my seatbelt and decided it's best I am not a violent person. My attempts would be met with the target laughing so hard at my serious attempts, they would fall down laughing and might hurt themselves!
Nothing like soaking up the sights and sounds of..... carp fishing.

Finally got my paper trail up to date by recording sightings from the past ten days or so. The reports I've sent out to my buddies (two in less than a week) have kept them up to date, and I now have to continue updating my files. I now have 543 railroads and 1252 private company listings. More to come before I get caught up on these files, I'm sure! I think our weather is supposed to be steamy for the first part of the week (I hope I can convince myself that we're ready for Medicare). Last half of the week should still be warm...perfect weather for re-enacting battles between North and South in one of the local parks.

This is just common sense. If you catch bullheads, of which we have many, they swallow the hook. With a barb on it, you either perform surgery to get it out or just cut the line. Either way - it is probably fatal to the fish.
Catch and release is good here in the city lakes since I would not want to eat any fish caught in either one of the lakes. They do stock trout in the bigger lake and people do keep them, but... Maybe they use them for fertilizer on tomato plants.

triple H day today.ns had the local up town when I came to work.When i left they had a westbound freight waiting to go.Uptown there were alot of empty cars ready to go.chores to do.
Busy weekend. Saturday was a real pain - while doing the runaround between our first and second trip, the loco shut down with a low oil alarm. Turns out there was plenty of oil, it was a sensor failure. So we had to borrow another trainset for our second trip, then give it back right away so the other crew could take it back to Utica.
Sunday our CMO tried to fix the problem to no avail, but he was able to get the loco running, albeit with someone keeping a relay properly set by hand... So we got out another loco and ran with that instead.
Wheeeee!
Back on the railroad Thursday and Sunday - in between, I've got an antique fire truck muster to set up for and attend.
I am going to grumble. So just go away and come back later!
We have this wonderful webcam that has sound, pan, zoom, full screen, free, everything you could want in a webcam. And yet there are complaints - sounds too loud, out of detail focus, no light at nite!
I am so glad just to be able to see the trains w/o a magnifier and to hear them! Did I mention free?
