Standard poodle, actually. Her name - "Rosie" - is an apt description of her color (but not pink...). Sort of a tan with hints of red. The green part stems from the color of stain I'm slowly getting applied to the siding on the house. Since I'm laying off the railroad for a few days while I'm dog-sitting, I figure I might get some work done on the painting... My luck, she'll get it on her...

Got some interesting freight-car sightings along the river earlier this week, and am trying to get together some stuff so I can begin to research them (yes, it's that rough!).I just saw on that other website that Dr. George W. Hilton has passed away at age 89. I'm surprised that Trains hasn't mentioned this, as he was one of their more prolific authors, beginning as far back as 1945. He also has a number of thoroughly-researched books to his credit.Speaking of thoroughly-researched books...

Six AM wake-up call via the fire siren this morning for a garage fire in a neighboring town. They got a decent stop on it. Followed that with a meeting with a state official about safety regulations, then bought a new computer for the fire station. Fire meeting tonight and then I think I'll hit the rack early.
Tomorrow I pick up my charge for the next week - a standard poodle named "Rosie."

Murphy SidingA coworker has a standard, off the shelf poodle. That thing looks so big it should come with a saddle.
Anyone used solely to "toy" poodles would be greatly surprised by the size of a "standard."
Rosie has arrived and is trying to figure out what's going on. It'll probably be a day or so before she settles in. When I arrived at daughter's house to pick her up, the poor thing was a little suspicious - daughter and family have been packing for their trip, so the routine has been off.
Apparently, Rosie is a finicky eater - she's pretty skinny. I certainly can't pack on the weight she needs in a week, but she's going to get spoiled as much as possible, food-wise.
I haven't figured out yet if she'll be using the dog door (left over from the Dalmatian and the Sheltie mix). She hasn't discovered it yet.
Should be an interesting week.

Today was a little different. While eating breakfast, I enjoyed watching a quail family (with the chicks almost grown) eating their breakfast by a crabapple tree that has a bird feeder suspended from an upper branch; they were gathering what had spilled from above. This evening, I went to my turned-six-today (born 8-8-08)'s birthday party. Her eight-year-old sister enjoyed the gift unwrapping just as much as the honoree did--she opened all of the gifts for her sister.
This past week and a half, we have had rain, with some spots receiving much more than others. Tuesday morning, a house built on the mountain side in North Salt Lake was crushed by a landside; a few other houses close to it were evacuated lest there be further disastrous movement. It is not certain, but it is suspected that some construction farther up the mountainside disturbed the land mass which had been thought to be quite stable.
Katie and I are not worried about land sliding down on our house, but we hope that the south edge of the yard is well secured so we will not slide down the hill.

This morning, I watched a hummingbird as it got its breakfast from the flowers of the trumpet vine that is outside my door. They certainly are amazing birds. I don't know just what variety these hummingbirds are; it was easy to tell what those I knew when growing up were--they were ruby throated hummingbirds.
I drew the short end of the stick today. I found out this morning that Nico and his mother were having a Transportation Day. It included a drive to Lisle from his house, a ride into the city on BNSF, a water taxi, regular cab, trolley (on Navy Pier), bus (to Lincoln Park), tour bus (upper deck thereof), subway, and a ride to Lombard on UP West (Nico had never been in Ogilvie Transportation Center before). The original plan was to get off at Elmhurst, where Grandpa would be able to show him about signals at the control point, but both daughter and grandson had done a pretty good job of baking themselves on the tour bus and at the other venues, and they were beat by the time they got here. Even the vehicles at Lombard's Cruise Night couldn't hold Nico's interest for very long. He was "relaxing" in our car when we drove them back to Lisle, and Pat and I both are pretty sure that he didn't stay awake for the trip back home.
Sorry, no wild life ate breakfast outside while I ate mine this morning.

Ever feel you need more excitement in your life? Yesterday, we got a foreign exchange student from India. His name is Sid and he'll be with us through May 2015. We spent last evening playing a sort of game of charades. It seems that we speak American English, he speak Indian English (as a second language). Allegedly, we are speaking the same language, but there were times I had to wonder.
Murph - We never had an exchange student, but they were quite common around here when my kids were in school. They may still be, but I don't hear of them.
Who needs a sauna? Just mow your lawn in +83F heat with 63% humidity...
Actually, we're supposed to see rain for much of the week, with highs only reaching +70F, so I'm not complaining.

Welcome back, Nance! Stick around!Not much to share here this morning...looking at a gloomy day in which the temperature will be lucky to break 70. The breeze almost has a bite to it.Norris, I'm not sure there are as many exchange students coming and going as there used to be (it might be too political a statement to wonder about the possibility of the waters having been muddied, so to speak). My sister was an exchange student while in high school; she went to Argentina. We never housed any exchange students, but one time our family took one (also from Argentina, I think) to Chicago for a long day (that was from Michigan, certainly a bigger deal then).

Had a fun day in 'da hole in da' ground and the strap-hangers on toy trains and then over to big-shoulders land. No sign of Lion though. Melting pot is working overtime here. 3 1/2 mile hike from Queens to Manhattan had some interesting quirks and BossHen couldn't keep me out of the mud for too long.

During supper last night (on Katie's deck), we watched a hummingbird defend the hummingbird feeder from other hummingbirds. Katie says that there are at least five hummingbirds around--I do not know how she can tell the difference from one to another.
About 5:20 this evening our power went out; about 10-15 minutes later, a fire truck went by and stopped a little way up the street. Before the fire truck went by, I called the power company, and was told that there was a crew in the area, and we should have the power restored by 9:30. Not long after the fire truck went by, a power company truck went by; then the fire truck left--and we had the power back about 6:00. A blown fuse? (One evening, when I was living in Reform, Alabama, the power went out; I walked out front, looked up at the pole in front of the house, saw a fuse holder dangling from one end and then called the power company, telling the man who answered what I saw; it was not long before the fuse was replaced.)
Then, we had a thunderstorm, with heavy rain.
Maybe, charging the storm with electricity, for the lightening and thunder, caused the fuse to blow?

My experience with hummingbirds is that they can be bullies - exactly as you say. That's one reason I don't feed them any more.
We got upwards of an inch and a half of rain from this system. No problems, and we can use it - my lawn is turning a nice shade of tan in spots...
As if dealing with my own computer isn't enough, I'm setting up a new computer for the fire department. After lunch I've got to meet on-line with a vendor to move a program and its data from the old computer to the new one. I've already moved most of the local data from one to the other. That leaves setting up the back-up drive and the printer. Wheee!
