Seeing Flood Of UP units on CSX-New York Central mainline...

I guess nobody has tumbled to the fact that the vast majority of engines in the US are built in the territory served by the CSXT and NS. Virtually every new engine the BNSF, UP or KCS gets has to operate over the NS or CSX to get to their actual owner.

So seeing a brand new UP GE in PA shouldn't be that hard. EVERY brand new UP GE engine started out in PA. In most cases the owners will allow the delivering carrier to use the new engine as a working engine instead of charging to haul the engine to the Western carrier.

I was railfaning the CSX River Line two Saturdays ago. I was there all day, saw 8 trains, but only one CSX![xx(]. I saw 8 UP's and 3 BNSF's. By the way, congrats Sarah, one more post and you got yourself a star.

yes wut is goin on here?? I've seen all to many UP AC6000CWs and Dash 9 44ACs on Conrail's right of way on the NEC, and I've been seeing Up in CSX's Abrams, and Greenwich yards. I think something fishy is going on here. Two days ago I saw a coal train w/ a consist of two AC6000s UP winged locomtives in fresh new paint. This was on the NEC near North Phila station. I've never seen UP power on the NEC.

Visit Railpictures.net.....with the power sharing agreements between the few remaining Class I's it becomes very difficult to determine which train is which and what railroad is actually operating it..

The only impediments to full operation of power over all railtoads is the various implementations of Train Control that require specially equipped locomotives to operate on specific territories.

Power sharing and it's resulting Horsepower Hours reduce power trading to an accounting exercise.

I always see UP and BNSF power sitting on the tracks outside the Engine Matinenance shop here @ CSX's yard in Syracuse NY

One thing I never see in this part of Canada is shared power with CP and CN.... they don't even seem to share intermodal cars....

Down at Roberts Bank the power is always CN on CN and CP on CP and there are never (at least I have never) seen a CP intermodal car on a CN intermodal train or visa versa.

There's a UP/CSX run-through I often see on the BNSF Aurora-Chicago line. Usually 3 or 4 UP SD70's and 80-90% 'CSX Intermodal' containers. I'm guessing it runs through on BN for a more favorable connection.

Pooled power is also not un-common on this line, CSX, NS, UP, CP, and even CN, so maybe they all merged and haven't told us [:)] [:)] [:)] [8D]

You should see some of the CP trains where they have CP, BNSF, UP, NS and KCS power in the same train-now that's interesting. Never seen that personally but several guys in my club have.

I don't $hit any more what you see is what you see. I've seen so many other road units come through Blair that I pay no mind no more. I have seen more BNSF now more than ever.

I have been seeing a lot of NS power on BNSF trains,including trains with solid NS power.I have also seen quite a few CN units.BNSF is not merging with either road. These are just leased units,nothing more.

I regularly see CSX and NS engines here on the UP east/west main.
Last week our train had UP engines, the radio was from Amtrack, the head end EOT device was from BNSF (still marked BN) and the EOT was from the IC&E.

OK,...forget about the last part. Still, is there any sense of assigned priority to expediting run through power back to the originating road? Or is the common practice to "float" them around under the premise that it will all end up on the balance with the accountants to "duke it out"?

For one thing a lot of the checks, inspections and maintenance are mandated by the FRA so no matter where the unit is, when the meter clicks over the work must be done.

Also, it is a two way street. If UP runs the BNSF power into the ground they can be pretty sure that BNSF probably won't treat their power any better when they get it.

Power swaps are beneficial to both parties and aren't accidental happenings.

I saw a lot of UP and BNSF power on CN. Also see a lot of CSX power on NS and see NS on CN trains (including CN train 334 which only had NS power)

I'm betting the railroads keep a pretty tight string on their motive power. They know when and where and what time and for how long. They are kind of critical that way!
