You don't see them as often, but they are around. I've had to kick therm off trailing units more than once...

I used to see them in the Erie yards. We would give them water and part of a sandwich, then send them over to the PRR yards. Never had any problems with them.

Now the locals ...... well that's a different story.

i used to hop em on cnw and ic in iowa and ill. sure was exciting in a way. free travel. except when train blew through town too fast to jump off. then it would finally stop 25 or 50 miles or more from where i wanted off at . bummer. now a days there are some real crazy crackers out west that will kill you fer nuthin if you hop into their car by accident.
hopping trains was an adventure getting off at towns ya never heard of and exploring.

Saw two on the same train about 8 years ago on CSX at Contee Road grade crossing near Laurel MD. First guy was white, forty-ish with a beard yelling "Yahooooo"from the left rear top corner of a loaded coal hopper. Next was an Asian-American teenager who appeared to be commuting from school to home. He was reading a book and wearing black slacks and a white shirt!!! Riding a similar perch about 15 cars back.

Almost a daily occurence in Denver. Cinder Dicks had a small war going with some of those sleazeballs earlier this year.

How often do you actually see people riding the freight trains now?
I haven't seen anyone for about 5 years now.
The last ones I saw were 2 Native Americans riding a westbound BNSF grain train in eastern Montana on the ex-GN! I remember passing this train (which was doing about 60 MPH) and telling my mom, "Hey, there were people riding on one of those grain cars"! So we went ahead of the train a little farther so we would have time to pull off the road and wait for the train. When the car came by we started to pace it and there were 2 Natives riding under the end overhang of a PS grain hopper reading books. That was probably a pretty good spot to stay dry as it was raining slightly. If I would have been older and had the RR Police phone numbers I would have called them to let them know of their passengers; the RR Bull could have intercepted them up east of Havre, MT (about 100 miles west of the train).
