You can get some great views of that LaCrosse golf course (and the BNSF main, not to mention the sloughs of the Mississippi River) from Grandads Bluff in LaCrosse. I am surprised none of the Bergie/Mike pictures were taken from there. It is a fantastic place to watch trains -- almost directly above them. That was the site of the CB&Q depot, I believe. And you can watch the golfers cross the tracks to get to the next hole.

I bet the crews keep the windows shut when going through there.

I don't know the name of the course but about three miles east of Kent, Ohio the B&O Pittsburgh to Chicago main passes through a golf course. I don't believe any of the holes require shots across the railroad but the golfers and their carts cross the tracks at a highway grade crossing. The signals at this location use the name "Golf Course". Golfers are occasionally seen along the tracks poking through the weeds looking for their ball.

Wow, that's quite a set-up.

Wonder if any trains have ever been hit, quite the mess if they were to run through the driving range. [:D]

In White Rock, BC the BNSF mainline runs for about a mile right down the beachfront, 'bout a quarter of a mile or so the track runs right next to the boardwalk! It looks just as if it is one big passenger platform, but in reality all that comes through there is the BNSF freight trains headed for New Westminister and Vancouver.

I always thought it was a pretty dangerous set-up, but a few years back they finally got around to putting up a fence to separate the mainline from the boardwalk with breaks in the fence every so often so people can still access the beach.

Could be a great spot for trainwatching, but the track doesn't get all that much traffic, and it's all payparking. [:(]

Have played the LaCrosse, WI golf course Erik has pictured today several times. It's weird. You tee off the first hole (par 4) over the Chicago-Seattle mainline of the BNSF (single track... maybe 50 yards from the tee). Then, if you're carrying your golf bag, you walk down the fairway right over the track to your next shot. During the course of playing 18 holes, three/four trains often pass. This is the track the Empire Builder, North Coast Limited, and Twin Cities Zephyrs used to travel (after the downtown LaCrosse street running was abandoned). The golf course was originally the Lacrosse Country Club. A few years ago, it was sold to the city and made a public course when a new country club course was built northeast of LAX.

Are there any other places in North America that have odd ROW situations like this?
