Happy Day for me!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 1, 2003 12:53 PM
Last saturday my dad came beck from an auction. As I came out to greet him, He was carrying a box, and did not allow me to see the contents till I was inside.

Imagine my surprise when I found out it was full of HO train cars and tracks!

No locomotives, but lots of rolling stock! (Mainly Tyco, but a few Bachmanns and no-names) I need some trucks and couplers, but other than that, I'm happy! Yippie!

wish my parents did that for me. i have to buy everything myself all while making car payments. i only get like $150-$200 a month now since football is over. i work at a pizza place and the other 2 cooks were in football so when that ended being the newest employee my hours got cut, BIG TIME. oh well. i'm still going strong. buying stuff. spent $75 on 4 things today. my paycheck was only $78. so in the end my check was $3.

congrats on the rolling stock. what RR is it?

Sorry about not getting to this right away.

The RR on most of the cars is CP rail. There are 2 BN's, 2 Santa Fe boxcars, one Union Pacific hopper and several mixed-name cars, Fairly old and some still in the Origional boxes! (But all the cars were used) [:D]

That's great! When you buy used you can get all sorts of amazing deals. I buy almost all of my trains used. Auctions are great, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. If there are any antiqe stores, pawn shops, second hand stores or junk stores in your area phone them and ask if they have trains. Whenever you're in another town or city, always check for these places. Of course many won't have trains, but some will. Sometimes they'll look harder for trains because of you. The owners of all the places like this where I am know me on a first-name basis and many phone me when they get trains in. Garage sales can also yeild trains. I know I once bought a complete Tyco set with a Southern 0-6-0 for $2 at a garage sale. Of course, sometimes, these people are out to rip you off, but the deals always outweigh the disappointments. Trust me, you'll be glad to have followed my advice. Good luck in finding many, many more trains!

I'm sure that if you do you'll have many more exciting days like the one your dad came from the auction. From personal experience these places know absolutely nothing whatsoever about trains or their values. "The hunt", as l like to call it, is half the fun. The best place to start would be to check the yellow pages for these places. Also, be sure to be on the lookout for any flea markets during the summer. One of the best deals I got one time was at an antique store that had a box full of HO trains consisting of 10 engines and 40 cars (many of the cars were higher quality kit built ones) as well as a few other things for only $50 Canadian. If it wasn't for finds like this, my collection would be much smaller than it is. Let me know how it works out for you. I'll be rooting for you.
