Good morning, diners.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, Brunhilda.

Another day to work on taxes.  I should finish today and get the work submitted.  Taxes are easier for me now that I'm retired -- pretty straight-forward stuff.  It wasn't always that way.

We have another day of thawing before winter returns with snow flurries tomorrow.

Even though one of my daughters has a Tesla, I don't see us getting an electric car.  She commutes in Dallas -- it's perfect for commuting.  Out here on the plains, we drive too far for even basic necessities.  I have a feeling the batteries will not be progressing fast enough for us to rely on them at our advanced age for the distances we travel out here.

Hopefully I will be able to get back to some layout work later today.  I've had layout withdrawal the past several days.

I hope everyone has a good hump day.

Chloe, I will have a bowl of Rasin Bran and a glass of milk this morning.

It is a perfect day outside, I sure hope there are a couple more coming up.

This is absolutely true. I love the look of old downtown buildings all across the country.

I'm back in the fold, so to speak regarding Trains.com

Please let me know how this works out. I hope all the problems are resolved. If so, I will probably be back too.

At the present time, I would have to agree with you.  As I have mentioned before, if I actually do get out to see you sometime, I would have to plan my stops to recharge, and most of the trip would have to be on the Canadian side.

Our next car will be electric.

For vacations we will rent a larger car. I can also rent a truck anytime I will need one of those.

Good morning Diners.  A large coffee with a shot of rum please,  Chloe.  It wil not help the pains in my arm, shoulder and back,  but I'll enjoy the drink.  Whistling

Weathering rolling stock.   I have done some weathering on a small amount of parcels carriages etc.  and am pleased.

Just received a request from a friend   for clothing and blankets etc.  to send to the earthquake survivors in Turkey/Syria.  Both Dawn and I are in the process to clear out old clothes,  so we shall donate them.

Expecting arrival of some railway carriages  for the layout.   Hopefully they will arrive today (or tomorrow).

Good Morning Diners.  Chloe, coffee STAT.

Just been sitting in my booth listening to the conversation.  Not much new to say from my end.

I guess that's why I am so reluctant to weather my locomotives. To heck with reality!

I kind of feel the same way Dave.  I like the weathered look, but why ruin a pristine locomotive or car?  I tried my hand at weathering once in my youth.  Totally flubbed it up, including on a car that had a lot of sentimental value to me.  I used it as it wasn't going on the layout again and I didn't have other "spare" cars to test on.  Probably part of the reason I'm reluctant to try again.

Not one of a kind (three of a kind?), but certainly unique, and neat looking.

Hi Bear,

Interesting locomotives! I love the restored versions. There is nothing like a fresh, shiny paint job to brighten the spirits!

I guess that's why I am so reluctant to weather my locomotives. To heck with reality!

Gidday Chloe, could I have a large cool lemonade, please. It would go down a treat.

The first New Zealand mainline diesel electric locomotives were the ten 1500 hp English Electric NZR Df class, built in 1954. The “Carnation Red” paintwork is getting bit drab but then this 1972 photo is only 3 years prior to the Df class withdrawal from service.

I think the Tesla will be ideal in urban areas, not so much in remote parts of the country.

At the present time, I would have to agree with you.  As I have mentioned before, if I actually do get out to see you sometime, I would have to plan my stops to recharge, and most of the trip would have to be on the Canadian side.  If I do buy another (getting to age where I may just drive a lot less and stay close to home) I would definately buy the larger battery pack.  Well worth the extra money!

I see the article mentioned the reduced power/range in very cold weather.  That is true....  One thing that computer upgrades have helped with is more pre warming of the battery which allows better range and also helps with regenerative braking early while on the road.  Electric loses more range in very cold weather than gas or diesel, but not as big a difference when compared with other fuels than a lot of detractors would have you believe.

I think the Tesla will be ideal in urban areas, not so much in remote parts of the country. I have/had several family and friends in the RCMP, I use to go spend a few days every year with my cousin for a break. He was posted in some really remote areas and we would patrol hundreds of km on gravel and dirt roads in suburbans or pick-up trucks. Once we had a 20-mile high-speed pursuit of a carload of first nations kids reaching speeds of 25mph on the snowy dirt road. My cousin finally just went up behind them in the suburban and pushed them into a snow bank. Got out and gave them H-E-double hockey sticks for being idiots and we left. He was also posted to a few detachments through the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains. We would be in a Crown Victoria usually chasing speeders on the Trans Canada Hwy. Those Crown Victorias moved out pretty well. A Tesla would have shortened the time to catch up to the offenders by quite a bit.

I wonder if they will make a Tesla Police Special? Maybe they can fit an extra battery in somewhere to increase the range. I went with my cousin to some very remote first nations villages on the coast from where he was posted inland, it was several hours each way and we would have several jerry cans of fuel in the back of the truck for the trip. Sure had a lot of fun riding along with him, met some real characters.

Model "Y".

Aha!  Yep!  I should have known that...  My Podiatrist has a Model Y.  He checks out my feet and we talk Cars...!  LOL  The Y looks just a bit bulkier in the body, particularly the front.  I think the bars on the front blocked my seeing that.

I'm back in the fold, so to speak regarding Trains.com.  Maybe in December, as a former subscriber, I got an offer to renew at $29.99.  Unfortunately it got shuffled to the bottom of a pile of papers and when I saw it again it expired.

I took a chance and emailed customer service to see if they would still honor the offer.  Not counting the immediate computer generated response, 3 days later someone emailed me, saying they would send me a link to pay if I could send an image of the original offer.

I sent the image; three times I sent the image and finally got the link. It only took 3 weeks.   Angry

Sorry I missed you today Steve, I was waiting for the email.

Ed, I found that photo online and didn't know anything about it.  Was it real?

This early Trains thread has speculation and misinformation all over it:

https://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/79997.aspx

As I boiled down the information from other sites the engine was painted at Coast Engine and Equipment in Tacoma, WA, under contract from UP and got the job done incorrectly. Seems like UP repainted it a year or two later into the standard UP scheme. It is an ex-SP engine.

UP does have some yard engines and boosters in primer gray but this isn't one of them.

For a whole NEW look for UP here's what they've unveiled:

Good morning, all. In about 10 minutes (9 a.m. Central, for those of you reading this later) we'll be in the workshop, doling out structure kits to the staff for next year's project layout, and if I can convince the others, maybe laying some cork roadbed. Those of you who are subscribers to Trains.com can watch on the webcam at https://www.trains.com/vid/webcam/workshop-webcam/. (Until we're there, you'll see recorded video of me fiddling with things yesterday.) See you there!

Good morning, diners.  The usual please.

We had another day of temps in the 40s, so the snow is almost all gone.  There is still some ice in the street, but it's going fast.

Another friend died -- another funeral Friday.  I'm getting leery about reading the obituaries in the paper.  I hope I don't see mine soon.

Isn't it amazing how ornate the old buildings were?  Today's modern buildings are so bland and utilitarian by comparison.  Even in my little old town, several old buildings downtown are works of art, while newer buildings are forgettable.

Not much else going on today.  I've been working on taxes again.  It's kind of depressing thinking how much time, effort, and money goes into our tax system, when it could be so simple.  I guess they are aiming to make it simple again:  1.   How much money do you make?  2.  Send it to us.

Layout progress is slow.  Isn't it strange how each of us looks at a layout job that we estimate will take two hours, and it take two days!  I guess that's why it's such a good hobby.  We love the time spent working on it.

I don't know if this is a one-time paint job or not.  I thought it was unusual for a railroad where every locomotive is yellow.

Good morning!

Absolutely nothing new to report here.

With all the new insulation and insulated inpact windows, my house does not change temperature with the outside air very much at all. On the very cold days, and only cool days this year, the house has stayed in the 65-70 degree range on the inside without running the heater.

Stepping outside is a suprise now.

Bear: Have there ever been HO scale models made of those Rail Cars?

Kevin, as the rail gauge in New Zealand is 3 foot 6 inches, the scale to model the NZR was, and still is the predominant one, when I got interested in the hobby, was Sn3.5, (3/16” using HO track) too large for me, though had NZ120, or TTn3.5, (TT scale using N scale track) been around, I think I would have looked at seriously at going down that track.

However, the Brazilian firm Frateschi does make, in HO scale, in various NZR liveries, a DA, Dc, and Dx class locomotives. The purists tend to sneer at those who use those locomotives, but I have seen on several occasions a portable layout that very nicely depicts local dairy production from the farm to the consumer via the dairy factory , and the various “milk trains” involved.
But there is not an HO scale “Fiatrail car.”

Speaking of NZR railcars, tonights offering is the NZR home grown “Standard Railcars” built 1938, lasting in service until 1972, these 50 seaters, had each worh out at least 3 sets of diesel engines! I’ve only seen a couple of paintings and colourized photos, but I think the original livery of ivory/silver with the green stripe was quite attractive, but the motorsts of the time complained bitterly that the railars were to hard to see at level crossings, so they were quickly repainted red. It would to nice to think that one of the preserved Standards would be painted in the original scheme.

Hey, hey, hey....!

Just found out something rather cool!  I don't have cable TV as I generally really hate watching 10 minutes of commercials to see 3 minutes of program.  So...  I didn't see the Grammy Awards yesterday.  If I had known I would have found a way to tune in, I think!  A gent I went to College (Eastman School of Music) with got one yesterday!

Bob was two years ahead of me there, but in a college that small everyone knew everyone.  Sometime I may tell you about a record at Eastman I still hold with a guy named Mitch Miller.... Wink

Good morning, everyone.  Chloe, I'll have bacon and eggs.  And coffee.

I actually slept late today.  Daisy the Dachshund decided she needed to go outside at 2:30 a.m., and I couldn't fall asleep after that unscheduled walk out in freezing temps.  I read for a while, and I woke up at 8:00 a.m.  Unheard of for me.

John (york1):  In last month's diner you posted a picture of a teepee motel and said it might be a good model.  Funny yo9u should mention it.  Here is a picture from this last year's Trainfest.

Jim, that's amazing.  When I first found the photo, I looked online for some model railroad photos of it, but didn't see any.  I don't have room for it on my layout, but I sure remember places like that from growing up in the 1950s.  I remember going to a souvenir store called Jerome's Teepee, which was in a building something like that only bigger.  Neat photo -- thanks!

I bought an N streetcar which is DC.  I'm going to put in a streetcar track completely separate from my DCC system, so I'm going to buy a cheap used DC power control.  There is a train show coming up in two weeks about 50 miles from me, so I hope I will find a good cheap one at a vendor's table.

Have a great Monday, everyone.

Earlier, I said I got the brake lines  in on a model.

First time brake line by Jim S, on Flickr

The one line is too long and the bend too low.  If it comes unglued when I try to paint it, then I'll fix it.  Otherwise I got it to stick in place, I ain't touchin' it!

Less is more,...more or less!
