Okay, I have to share this with someone because it is a secret.Laugh I just got off the phone and exchanged E-Mails with my kids school where he went from K-12. It often has been ranked the top school in the Province and it is celebrating its 25th anniversary next year. Because it is the 25th, they are selecting 25 of the most remarkable students to have graduated from the school and the kid is one of them. It is based on academics, accomplishments and things like volunteering in the community. I have to get busy and put together a list of his volunteer work. I hope I don't miss anything.

Sorry, I had to brag, there are tears of pride in my eyes right now. When he was 5 years old he was tested and came first out of 482 applicants to the school to get in. There were only 44 spots.

It is a good day.

Ray sorry about your loss.  There are many other cats and dogs that need rescueing.

Brent congrats on your son.

Had to drill some of my turnbuckles for my water tank to accept the 0.15" bronze wire.  I don't see any way to use the thread supplied. Then I painted them, then I tried to curve them to fit the tank and much of the paint came off.  Tongue Tied

Ray sorry about your loss. There are many other cats and dogs that need rescueing.

Yes there are....  Hope somebody rescues them.  Not going to be me at this time.  You and my sister..........  LOL  I am looking at having someone else to "adopt".  Someone of the human variety.  All I have to do is find someone I like that would be willing to put up with me. Smile, Wink & GrinWhistling

I am in the process of cleaning out my house and finally dealing with stuff that has been left here and collected since my kids were last in the house.  The pet sitter who watched Blackie while I was in Key West will be taking a lot of the remaining pet items to use in the Ferral Cat program here in Geneva and in Canandaigua.  Sold back some cans of food and gave a bag of open dry cat food (opened two days ago.  Used all of one half cup of that) and 5 unopened packages of insulin syringes to the Vet office.  They will give me a credit for the canned food at least.

I am also giving two aquariums to my DIL she can use at School (Science Teacher).  That should get rid of the last handicap for me to take off for a weekend or longer if I want.

Brent, That is great about your son.  Don't blame you for "bragging" a bit.  Cool!

Has the general doctor shortage in Canada affected you at all in Ontario?

I believe that the rural areas are short of doctors. Not sure about the cities. I know that there is a lot of "hallway medicine" going on in most of the hospitals, so people are getting seen but if they have to be admitted they may have to wait for a long time before they get a bed. One of the club member's spouses was taken to hospital last week by ambulance. She arrived at the hospital at around 9:00 am but didn't get a bed until 4:00 am the next morning. Not a great start to her recovery.

I personally don't have any problems seeing my doctor quickly if needed. My back was in serious pain for three days last week after doing just a tiny bit of physio. I phoned his office on Wednesday afternoon and had an appointment for Thursday morning. He always leaves a couple of slots open every day so he can deal with more urgent issues.

It turns out that it was a good thing that I made the appointment. My back went nuts on Wednesday night. Normally I am comfortable when laying down but on Wednesday I was in pain all night. When I tried to get up in the morning I could barely stand or walk. Getting to the doctor's appointment was very difficult. After hearing my story he filled out a detailed request for an MRI immediately and sent me for blood tests. When filling out the requisitions he takes the time to put in as many details as possible so the MRI people can judge the urgency more accurately. He may write several paragraphs of notes. I'm not sure how many doctors go into such detail. Good service!

Thanks for asking,

Dave

CudaKen sounds like you are on your way, keep up the good work!!

Batman you should be very proud of your son.

I'll be glad when summer gets here. In the last 11 days we have got 5.92 inches of rain, both of my ponds  are overflowing and it's getting old. Within a 15 mile radius of our place we have had baseball sized hail, straight line winds, 4 tornados. Today we went to Palestine ( 30 miles north of us) and the entire town is without water (19,000 people) do to today's storms, possible twister. They are trucking in water and porta potty.

So I am ready for summer, sorry about the venting. Ken

Hi Brent,

Thanks for the suggestions. Anything is worth exploring, carefully

I emphasize the word 'carefully' because a club member recently suggested that I try a "naturally sourced" over the counter back pain remedy, which I did. I am in the habit of monitoring my blood pressure and it immediately shot through the roof within a couple of days of starting the stuff. Normally my BP is great. The club member is quite a health food nut. His solution the the high BP was to take less of the concoction. Excuse me?!? My BP had just shot up by almost 40 points on both ends and he thinks I should keep taking it?!?

I'm not dismissing your recommendations, but I am a little leery of taking supplements. I'll do some research into the Krill oil.

Work Front LaughLaughLaughLaugh Sure cannot call reading The Raitway Detective by Edward Marson series work! Read around 150 pages today, maybe more? Not a soul in the store besides me.

Richard and Ed Thank You for the recognition on cutting back. Wednesday final total was 12 cigarettes. Today it looks like it will be 6 or 7. I did go 9 hours with out smoking after I got to work. I sure won't say it was easy with it being dead! Smoking was kind of a reward for making it another hour? Till I got home I only had 3 cigarettes then I got a little weak. Sigh

Good Morning All,

I'll have a regular and a blueberry bagel toasted with a smear of cream cheese please ladies. Fixing to rain again. At least it is warm out.

Spent a little time on the turnouts last night but hadn't gotten home until late again. Still haven't finished up my car either but getting there.

Brent, it's natural to be proud of your kids and if you can't brag here among friends, where can you?

Ken, keep up the good work! Is the no customer thing a trend or just a spot of bad luck? If it continues, you might have to start looking around again. Things are better than they were when you were submerged in the deep end but it does take time.

Dave, glad they're taking things seriously. I found the same with my mom. 2-3 year wait for eye surgery (transplants) but when she had a heart scare, immediate help and admission. Same with my dad though it didn't work out for him.

Time to pick up tools and earn a living.  Chow, J.R.

If somethjing says "all Natural" I generally toss sit aside because they do not know what they are talking about!

Rusinol is "all natural" but you would not want it in your sun tan lotion, or any thing ele for tahat matter.

Another one says "No Chemicals" and the firsy ingredent liste is water. Well duh! Water *IS* a chemical!

Mornin' folks!

Spring has started to sprung here in the Finger lakes.  Have to mow the lawn very soon, within the next few days.  There are blades of grass about 6" tall in places on the lawn.  Need to get a new blade for my EGO mower.  Probably will drive to Home Cheapo in Victor to get one this afternoon.

Ken, GOOD!  Hope it continues to help you.  I have struggled with addictions to food for many years (and the old cigar habit) so I do have some idea what you are going through.  My thoughts and prayers to you that you may "slay the dragon"!  My DIL wants the aquariums for her science classroom.  At one time I had about 18 aquariums in my house in Waverly, NY I was supplying a wholesaler with Veiltail Angels, regular Angelfish, Several other species of egglayers including some excellent Bettas, and several species of livebearers.  It paid for the "habit" of raising fish....  I am just at a crossroads in my life where I don't want anything that could keep me from going new places and starting to enjoy life in it's fullest again!

Got to get my shower and head over to the field house to put in another 4 miles.  Catch you all later.

Howdy .... We're leaving soon for Nashville, but I have time to check in here.

Ken .... Bravo ! .. Keep up the good work. I know some people who have quit smoking, and they are much better off. So I encourage you.

Dave ... I can relate to your back pain. It can be very miserable based on my experiences with it. Definately, it is best to be diagnosed and treated as needed by a real doctor.

Brent ... Congrats on your son receiving the recognition.

I have worked a little on my coal mine project, but not much. Hoping to have something to show eventually.

Best wishes to everybody on Good Friday.

Congratulations!  I've known so many people that just kind of give up and live out the rest of their time bemoaning the fact that life passed them by.  It's great you are willing to make changes that will help you enjoy life.

I wish I could convince my wife to get rid of the junk she has in the basement.  She can't complain about the room my layout takes up because she has so much more room for her "junk".

I had to scrape my car windows this morning, but it is warming up nicely now.  I warmed up during my walk, and actually could take off my hood and gloves after a while.

Hope everyone has a Good Friday!

Good Evening from Johannesburg,

Ray, Sorry to hear about your kitty. Pets are so special. Our Robbie is 10 now and I doubt we will get another dog as they are a 15 year comitment.

We are packing up tonight to start the homeward trek tomorrow. The first of 2  10 hour flights. We are stopping in Istanbul for 2 nights to see the sights. We are flying Turkish Airines which means a connection through that city.

We saw a lot of wildebeest and I thought how much Lion enjoys them. I also saw 2 lions  feasting on one.

Just short note as typing on this tablet is a pain.

CN Charlie

Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast, it is 14c and we expect sunny skies for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the kind words about the kid, we are excited for him, considering the company he had in that school, the honour is really something.

There are dozens of chemicals in the human body and a long list of reasons that the delicate balance can be thrown out of whack. My recent pain and suffering due to a magnesium issue is a good example. Fortunately for me, my highly educated wife pulled me through yet again.Laugh

Arsenic is a natural substance, yet none of us are in a hurry to start consuming that. I don't take any meds or supplements until I have read up on them thoroughly. You should get all the vitamins and minerals you need in a healthy diet. You won't find much in the naturopathic potion department in this house.

Both my wife's parents had high cholesterol and their MD gave them meds for it. My wife set to work finding out why their bodies were producing too much cholesterol.  She had them off those nasty meds in no time as their levels returned to normal. Don't treat the symptom fix the cause. Some of my wifes most frustrating work came from animals with chemical imbalances caused by owners giving their pets homemade potions found on the internet or even commercial products that the animal never needed in the first place. She has a degree in nutrition and sure knows her stuff.

Dave, ask the Physio about IMS it would give me instant relief for about ten days as my muscles would get tighter and tighter by the pain I was going through. Also, read up on Omega3 fatty acids before you buy it if you decide to.

Acupuncture can be a good way to go. One of the wife's fellow Vets does it. In the past, we have had it done to a couple of our old dogs and they went from not being able to get up to running around the yard again. The horse my daughter was riding could not lift its head very high and started just laying in its stall. They called in the acupuncturist and after one treatment it was back up and after three treatments, completely back to normal.

At 62 years of age, I have never waited for anything as far as the health care system goes. I have made good use of it with my semi-extreme sporting way of life. Walking into a hospital, getting a broken bone fixed then leaving without taking out my wallet is a good deal if you ask me.

My last experience was a couple of years ago when after two years of putting up with a very painful shoulder I waved the white flag and on a Tuesday went to the Doctor about it. Saw the surgeon Thursday, had an MRI the following Monday and was booked for surgery 16 days later. I had the surgery date moved until summer was over as I had plans. All it cost me was gas and parking.

My Mom had a bad heart attack one afternoon and when the paramedics arrived they pulled out a laptop and immediately had her full health records including all the meds she was on right in front of them. No need to try and have panic-stricken family members trying to run around the house trying to figure out what she was on. One of her out of country friends was quite indignant about the government knowing what medications she was on. Mom said they pay for them so of course, they know.Laugh They ended up taking her into Vancouver for a quintuple bypass and after her seven weeks of hospital care, it didn't cost her a dime.

Well, it is time to go watch Toronto fend off the Bruins, Winnipeg is my hometown so I am now cheering for them to win the cup, they do look shaky. Then there is Calgary.Hmm The Vancouver Canucks have never won the Stanley Cup in the 49 years they have been in the league. One of my wishes, before I croak, is they do. I am confident it will happen.

Charlie, can't wait to see the pics of the trip. I think I would like to visit Namibia it looks stunning there. Daughter is out of high school in two months and the wife and I will be free to hit the road or most likely the airport. We can't decide where to go first as we both have traveled a lot already when we were young. I think we will try to get a South Pacific cruise that stops in at Easter Island and Chile and maybe winds its way to or from Guam. I want to go to Tinian and Saipan, for some reason I am drawn by the history of those places. I think I am not healthy enough to dive anymore which is heartbreaking. The weight of the water on this arthritic body would too painful. At least I got to do the Barrier Reef.

I put my first item for sale ever on Ebay. I was ready to take it to the recycle and looked to see if it was worth anything and there were two that sold for $309.00 US. So I changed my mind about junking it. There are a hundred views already with no bids.Hmm

This post is too long for anyone to read, I better stop rambling.Laugh

Got in the car this morning and the windshield and the hood was green with pollen.  My hayfever doesn't kick in until the honeysuckle is in bloom, another month.

Baltimore is in an uproar over (down Vinnie down...no politics this time) over measles.  Apparently an infected family went to a doctors office, then went shopping, to several stores.  It's only 4 cases but you would think it is the second coming of Ebola.

At last an illness I don't have to worry about.  I did have a childhood neighbor who died of measles, but that was when everyone had measles.

I brought my roundhouse chimneys upstairs to trim off the sprues and paint.  Put them on the kitchen table and now they are no where to be found. Crying

Working with Campbell's shingles for the first time.  The cut side is longer than the not cut side so they want to go on curved.  Hopefully the chimneys will turn up.

BATMAN
I think I am not healthy enough to dive anymore which is heartbreaking.

That strikes me as an fascinating issue.  I was afraid to ask my cardiologist, but i'm probably not healthy enough to ski, at least out west, where there is altitude and maybe a slight uphill trek to the next ski lift.

East coast skiing, especially Mid Atlantic skiing, is more like advance sledding.  I think that would be doable.

In diving, every 33' is another atmosphere of pressure, but you only feel that in your ears and sinuses.  Putting on a wetsuit in the middle of August or going ice diving is certainly a stress.  All the sport diving I have done, physical conditioning was never even close to being an issue.

Unfortunately my former collegue who ran a hyperbaric chamber and was a navy Seal, is no longer around to ask this question.

Okay Henry, you have got me reading now. The last couple of times just snorkeling in Hawaii it hurt like all get out soon as I hit about twenty feet. My cousin was an instructor and even taught ice diving to the military and he had to quit as the family arthritis curse got him. He said he had issues with DCI in his arthritic joints and it was generally painful even at 25 feet. I may give it a go when the oppourtunity presents itself.

I am glad I took care of my bucket list before I settled down.

Hi Brent,

I have only read briefly about Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) but my symptoms certainly would suggest that it be looked into. For the uninitiated, in simple terms IMS is very similar to accupuncture but the needles target specific points where the skeletal muscles have tightened up and are pinching the nerves.

You mentioned that your pain was relieved for about 10 days. The promoters of the therapy suggest that the relief should last much longer than that. Do you have any idea of what the normal pain free period is? Also, how many times have you had the treatment, and was the result the same each time?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave, I went for IMS for a few years at the Arthritis Centre At VGH. I was told at the onset at diagnosis, it was going to get nasty for me for a few years until my back fused right up and it was for the most part not a good time in my life. I would go every ten days or so and the relief was tremendous. Others mileage may vary I guess.

There was a symposium in Vancouver where Rheumatologist from all over the world came and they used me to demonstrate the effectiveness of IMS. I had all these Doctors looking at me and some of them said I was the worst case they had ever seen. There were other guinea pigs there as well, most had become extremely obese with the onset of their arthritis. A lot of the conversation was about my good physical condition compared to the other patients in the room and the difference it would make in my recovery.

When I started to get really bad they said it would likely take 5 years to get through the worst part, well it took almost ten, but I am finally starting to feel better. Still in pain but not unbearable pain and I stopped the IMS a couple of years back as I got a better handle on things. Good muscle tone keeps the old bones lined up properly and that really helped a lot.

I honestly don't know where I would be today without the care I got at the Arthritis centre it was the best. Even the parking was free.Laugh

I had an 8-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son when I went off work, fortunately, I could retire with a full pension as I had 2 1/2 years sick time in the bank as I hardly had ever took a day off sick. Made it to 55 with 36 years in with the Feds.

Had to take the kid to hockey 2 or 3 times a week and skating became so painful I just had to coach from the bench at practice. Had a couple of really great older kids to help out.

Ken, my kids get their brains from their mother and their tenacity from me. It is a good combination for them to have. I am a blue collar guy with grade 12 education, my wife is a Veterinary surgeon with degrees in Agriculture, genetics, and nutrition. We are lucky to have her. People tell us all the time we were a good breeding pair. Laugh She was the first woman in my life that I could carry on an intelligent conversation with, withoutBang Head I had to marry her. She looks just like Meryl Streep and occasionally gets asked if she is her.

Time for bed, maybe Meryl is still awake!Mischief

Night all.

Good morning, everyone.  Another beautiful morning on the plains.

Off to see granddaughters today.  These are the closest grandchildren, only two hours away.

My son-in-law has a dead tree in his backyard and wanted me to bring my chainsaw.  I tried to start it this morning and could not get it working.  Isn't that terrible?  Now I'll have to play with the grandkids instead of working on cutting trees.  I'm really upset.

Ken, you're doing well.  When I quit, I had to quit drinking coffee for a while because I always had a cigarette with my coffee, and I couldn't get through a cup without one.  If you can get through that morning coffee without one, you're doing great.

Lion, you do a great job.  I have never seen an entire layout of a subway system before -- it looks really good.  You have a real talent.

Have a great Easter Saturday.

York1 John

I asked my doctor if I gave up delicious food and all alcohol, would I live longer?  He said, "No, but it will seem longer."

Mornin' folks!

Ken, Thumbs UpThumbs Up.  You're moving in the right direction!  Keeping you in my [prayers, my friend...

Well, (deep subject) I did something yesterday that I haven't done in about 45 years!  Went over to the field house for my walk, and ended up running a total of about 2 and a half of the 22 laps.  Started on the first lap and just decided that I was walking a fast as I could possibly walk and started to jog.  Had no trouble doing that at all.  Felt great!  So I jogged/ran about 1/3 a lap about every other lap or so.  Got my heartbeat up to 145 (did watch that closely).  A personal trainer that I have become friends with over there said that was perfect and quized me about diet (which he approved of, BTW).  So....  Now I have a new dimension in my excersize program.  I finished the first set (7 laps) averaging 3 minute laps yesterday!  When I started I could hobble around the track in about 4 minutes and 10 seconds.  So I feel quite good about my current fitness level!

Started work on a DPM structure yesterday as well.  Also got a bit more junk sorted and out to the trash.  The pet sitter is going to take several items I have from the kitties to use for the Feral Cat program in both Geneva and Canandaigua.  That gets rid of the rest of any useful items left over for the cats.  I threw out a vial (actually an epi pen that he would have only used about 1/4 of in two months, $90 worth) of insulin I had used.....  Once for Blackie.  Oh well, only money.

Back to weeding out!

Good morning .... We arrived home after midnight last night. ... Sleeping in this morning and the phone rang at 8:30.  It was telemarketing about a reverse mortgage scam. Idiot.  We never borrow any money for anything anytime. If we did, the last type of loan we would chose is a reverse mortage scam. Such lending should be illegal.

Has anybody heard from John Boy lately ?

Brent .... The picture of the CP passenger train is magnificant. I did not know CP had blue and white trains.

Ray .... Do you think it is possible you could chnge your mind in the future about having cats ? I remember after our prviuous cats died, we said no more of them. Got rid of all cats stuff. Had the carpets professioanlly cleaned. Replaced some furniture again .... No more cats, we said .... Guess what.... within about 2 years, we adopted a rescue cat from Cincinnati, OH. ... Then a short while later, it was a rescue cat from Paducah, KY ...... Next it was a rescue cat from Clarksville, TN.... Our current trio of cats has been very enjoyable.

Lion ... I like your subway photos .... Roar !

John (York1) ..... I think you said you are in Nebraska. Am I right? ... Feel free to tell about your model railroad. .... Nice you have grandkids within 2 hours of you ...  Ours are farther away than that.

Ken ... Thumbs Up

CN Charlie .... Thanks for checking in from so far away. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Everybody ..... Happy Model Railroading
