Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could use a cup of decaf, please....

BigDaddy, yep, that is a cicada killer....  They are not at all agressive and only sting if they are handled roughly (at least that is what the experts say).  They perform a good service by keeping the cicada population in check and therefore prevent cicadas injuring the trees they parasite for food while they are developing.  Body markings and wings are different from the Yellowjackets that were in my house.  (Totally different Genus.) Haven't had any more so I think they were just ones that woke up and found a hole from where they over wintered into my dining room......  My next door neighbor was out spraying tonight for any that may have decided to build nests under his window shutters on his house.  He did get a few wasps come out so he probably got a couple nests.  So far I haven't found any wasp nests around my house.  Paper wasps I don't mind.  Mud daubers are also not a problem.  They are good insectovores and provide a valuable service.  Yellowjackets? I just don't like them turning into several thousand and then have me step on their ground nest unexpectedly....  Don't ask!

I spent most of the day working outside trying to get the flowers in and the vegetable garden finished.  Haven't planted my carrots yet, and haven't been able to find any parsnip seeds.  There is only one other place I might find them and that is at the Seedway Office in Hall, NY.  About a 20 mile round trip.  We got a good shower early afternoon today so I didn't water the garden tonight.  Got more of the lawn mowed, but decided to stop when the skeeters came out!

YGW, what you mentioned sounds like bumble bees.  http://a-z-animals.com/animals/bumble-bee/

If what you saw are fuzzy they are probably bumble bees.  If not they may be the large variety of the yellowjacket like I had.  Bumble bees are an excellent pollinators and there was an experiment going on right near where I live at the Cornel Agricultural Experiment station a few years ago on their use to serve as pollinators where honey bees have been decimated by pesticides and other causes.  They used to come over to my house and polinate vegies and flowers.  interesting little things.  Very docile and won't sting unless you try to handle them.  They can be used (and are) inside green houses to pollinate tomatos and some other plants.  We used to get colonies of them in the barn when I was growing up.  My dad used to enjoy having them around and taught me to respect them.

Hope everyone has a good night out there!

Cicada killers

I think I am ready for medical marijuana.  If anything wakes me up at night, I am up for the next 3 hours.  A trip to the bathroom at 2:30 did it last night and then the dog decided to puke on the rug at 5:30.  I've been wasted all day.

Staring at my RS1 trying to decide where a speaker can possibly fit.

Well, it looks like a 50/50 chance of thunderstorms the next two days, but a good chance of a dry but partly cloudy Memorial Day. Well, even if it rains all three days, it doesn't matter, 'cause I do my ribs in the oven. 225 degrees for about 4 hours. They fall off the bone. Dinner

Thought I'd give you guys a heads-up... I just handed off the first article for Great Model Railroads 2017! It's an HO scale Rock Island branch in Kansas. Now I just have 9 more to go in a little more than a month...

YGW:  No hail; rain was coming down in sheets.  Tornado was rain wrapped. Rain still coming down today; found out that two of the ladies in an adjacent department here at work had damage to their homes by the tornado, one was significant.

Very excited about my sister's news.

Good Evening!

A quiet day and I am thankful for that! I need to relax and having a quiet day sure helps. Nothing much to report, other that my friend Claus called me, anouncing he will be picking me up tomorrow morning so we can start w*rk on the benchwork for that planned Z scale layout. I am really looking forward to this!

I do hope that some of the MIA´s show up again. Most of us are in an age in which a longer, unannounced absence makes one worry!

Haved a good one (in fond memory of our friend Jerry Cox)!

Tin can - Thats pretty close. Did you have horizontal rain and hail ? Good news and I bet that is a relief to get the cancer free news on your sister Thumbs Up

James - What type of fence do you want prices on ? Chain link ? 4', 6' ? I work with a large fencing company and I can get there pricing for you but need more details.

Ken - What did that break down to per foot ? Will they be putting concrete in the hole ?I hate it when that happens ! I have accidentally lost many messages Bang Head

Howmus - We used to have these old apple trees at our home place. There were these HUGE bees that looked similiar to yellow jacket but they were about 10 times bigger. I think some were between an inch and an inch and a qaurter ! I always steered clear of those things. They came around and ate from the fallen fruit on the ground. I got stung once ( my fault ) and man did it HURT ! They had an oranges brownish tint to them.

Reinhard - LOL ! Do you have to go out on the concrete ? I have built a few buildings near your area. I used to hate it. In the winter it was awful. The wind blew through like no tomorrow and during the summer you couldnt catch a breeze to cool you off ! Would you like for me to email you a few pictures that I showed you last week ?

Garry - Hope you are healing and I will continue to pray for you.

Lion - Hope a wildebeast hasnt caught you with its horn and knocked you out or something worse ?

Ulrich - Hope you are okay.

DER - Where are you ?

JaBear, Jeremy, Flip, Henry, Gary .....Howdy hope to see ya in here soon !

Rain and more rain around here.  Tornado touched down about a mile west of my work location yesterday; destroyed three houses, damaged 60 more.  No deaths reported, few minor injuries. We had about 7 inches at the house, but nothing in the house.  Our home campus is closed today because they had between 13 and 20 inches of rain yesterday, lots and lots of flooding.

I had been fighting something that centered around coughing fits; missed three days of work.  That hasn't happened (missed more than a day of work) since I had a cornea transplant in 1989.  I took last week off to spend time with both of my college kiddos who happen to be home at the same time; probably the last time that will happen, in the summer at least.

Missed my sister's cancer surgery because I was sick and did not want to pass it on to her or those around her.  Pathology report was good; she is officially cancer free; although she still has to undergo radiation because she had an aggressive kind of cancer; the radiation is to keep it from coming back.  We will see her this weekend as her youngest son graduates from high school tomorrow.

Good morning.  The sun is shinning and it is supposed to be around 85 degrees today.  Seems like summer is here.  Plan on working on setting my homemade forms to pour one section of porch foundation.  I started this project last fall and poured the footing slab and then it started raining and then winter came.  It has been so wet this spring that I just haven't felt like crawling around in the mud.  One of the joys of retirement is you can always put stuff off until a nicer day.

Layout front, glued down some more ties.  I have enough stained to do another two feet of roadbed.  Then its back to staining another batch.

Ken, how much fence does $1,700 buy in terms of feet of fence?  I'm faced with dealing with a very old rusty chain link fence where the post are rusting off at ground level.  One of these days the thing will just fall over.  At least I don't have neighbors who are bugging me about doing something about it.  One neighbor has offered to help take down the section ajoining his yard but I am not ready to give the only decent section of fence up yet.

V8Vega, the brake repair bill looked pretty reasonable, especially for California.  Finding a mechanic you can trust is always a good thing.

Time to get going. Have a great Friday.  Last night was a good night to be a Pittsburg Penguins fans as they won game seven and advance to the Stanley Cup finals starting this coming Monday.

Hit the darn wrong button again! Bang Head Had a 400 word post going as well! Bang Head

Sort version, got a fence bid from lowes I may take. Post will be sunk 3' foot, 5' gate, and fence will be 7' foot tall for $1700.00. Bid is for only the pool side of the fence. Rest I have to take care off. Last photo I posted of the back fence.

 What I got done today.

Way better, outside of the fence is painted. With all the rain did not have time to do both sides.

BigDaddy
They sound like cicada killers not yellow jackets. They sting their prey, they don't go around stinging for the fun of it like yellow jackets.

I don't think they were cicada killers as cicada killers are usually black and white.  These were very big (likely young queens just out of hibernation), over an inch long, and are probably in the genus Vespa.  Looked very much like this:

YGW - I couldn't agree with you more concerning the 4 letter word w**k.  Left the office at 23:00 last night only to be back at 09:00 this morning.  Enjoying a bit of a break at this time before the first of 4 headaches rolls in in 30 minutes.  We are going through one extreme to another; first we are drowned by rain and now baked.

Garry - praying for you for better days ahead.

Got to run.

All the best.

I rotated my own tires this morning so I wouldn't have to wait at the tire store.  I thought I could jack up the whole side of my car using my sears jack.  Apparently not.  I didn't save much time and now I need a shower.

Howmus - Howdy , I have a question about the Ghandi qoute. I assume that he is saying that it takes a strong person to forgive and not on the strong as in powerful/strength to forgive. Did you know that he looked into becoming a Christian and said he could not become one because the way Christians acted ? Terrible missed opportunity I think. He was a great man in many ways.

Ken - Here have a cup of French Roast with N&W anthracite coal dust and a sprinkle of Va honey bee honey in it to take the edge off. Hey you know after you "hatchet" Jerry you could bury the pieces in the fence post holes Surprise - just kidding -

Ulrich - I emailed you some photos yesterday I hope they cheered you up : ). I think a roll call is in order !

Flip - Keep the emails coming. Where do you get such good ones ?

V8 - Everyone needs junk room. Train junk rooms are even better !!!

Ouibejamn - Hi there is this your first time here ? If so Welcome !

Henry - Man that is sad. I hate it when I here about Christ children messing up.

Angel - Would that be California where the ground is breaking up under her ?

Chessie - Got you email will respond today. By the way. Some view the 4 letter word "work" here worse than an expletive. To sooth their concerns we use - "w**k" its kinda of a joke for the retired ones : )

Garry - praying for your continued healing.

Lion, Jeremy, JaBear, DER.....Hope to see you in here soon. Hi !

Gotta git back to w**k

Mornin' everyone!

Ah!  I see Ulrich has stopped by.  Zoe I'll be at the Rivet Counter keeping him company for a while.  You can bring me a pot of Marrakesh Express Organic Dark Roast Coffee and a couple eggs over easy (huh?  Oh yes use the organic ones from free range hens.) and a double order of sour dough toast.  I think Ulrich could use a refill as well.  Put his breakfast on my tab please.

Yesterday and this morning I dispatched 3 huge Yellowjackets here in the house.....  Have no idea how they got inside the house!  They must have just come out of wherever they spent the winter and found a way into the house.  Ended up having to use wasp spray on two of them, which I don't like to do, but I cleaned up real good after use (washed the windows it got used on.  The other one I nailed with a fly swatter.  These things are not terribly aggresive unless you bother their nest but I sure didn't want them inside.  They are the big ones (a little over an inch long) not the smaller ones that nest in the ground commonly that are real nasty!  Got nailed 21 times a few years back after I ran the lawn mower over a nest in a RR tie in the garden!

Hope to finish planting the garden today. May get a couple showers this afternoon and the temp is supposed to get up to 83°F.  I also want to spend another half hour or so getting some sun treatment on my back and sides for my psoriasis.  the sun seems to be helping already.

Only thing i have been doing model railroadwise is to get some research done on old (late 1800's) water towers.  I finally found a blueprint for the old PRR Standard types for branchline use.  That is what I want to duplicate and it shows a good diagram of the tighteners used on the metal bands.  The one photo I have found of the origonal tower at Olean (pronounced "oh-lee-ann"), NY clearly shows it had metal bands not iron rod around the tower.

Good Afternoon!

I have been battling a bad headache since I got up this morning. It´s a humid and grey day, so that must be the cause. I took a nap after lunch and I am feeling better after that.

I did some minor work on my layout - just changing the tune in my sound system. I got rid of the loco whistle and have church bells instead. Improves the atmosphere of the layout and annoys Petra Devil

It´s not only Galaxy who is missing - the list is again a mile long! Time for a role call?

I´ll be staying at the RC, watching the entrance closely. Who´s joining me in a Coffee?

RideOnRoad
Today is an anniversary, of sorts, for me. Twenty-four years ago today, I started recording my bike rides in a spreadsheet. Twenty-four years later I have logged every ride--miles, time, speed, and more recently, weather conditions and heart rate. In twenty four years I have-- Riden 106,000 miles Spent the equivalent of 274 days on a bike Recorded rides on seven different bikes Had four car-related accidents Had a dozen more self-inflicted accidents that drew blood Loved almost every minute

Wow, you are Mister Organization!  A spread sheet.  I rode a bike to work for over twenty years.  Wore out two bikes, dozens of tires, had only two or three accidents, never with an automobile, numerous flat tires, rode about fifteen miles a day rain or shine.  I probably should have kept records like you did, mostly so I'd know how many times I changed tires!  Good times.

N2  Welcome to the diner.

Richard  That's a ton of miles.  I guess that many car encounters are the norm.  My son was hit by a red light runner in New Orleans.  He only had minor injuries, but I still worry about him.  A guy got killed in a nice part of Baltimore a couple years ago by a hit and run.  Turned out the driver was drunk, texting and an female, Episcopal Priest.

Ken Eating snakes and killing beagles, my two favorite pets. (insert head shaking emoticon)

On the train front I realized my new Lifelike GP7 has a light board that doesn't look anything like the LL specific DCC boards for sale.
My Atlas RS3 has insane fluctuating power draw just running down the track.

The Blue Angels flew at the Naval Academy today.  On Sunday's practice, my dog seemed interested, today it was too much like thunder.

I been busy this week. No train news lately, I bought my mom a scrub top for work tomorrow, don't worry it's tax adjustable.

Just waiting patiently for the Kato SDP40s coming out.

My sister planning to come back home in July, since over years living in other state is starting to crumble beneath her for the past two years. Now we have some planning to do when the time approaches.

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, When the Going Gets Tuff, I will have a Beer. Big Smile

Yard Wars. Felt pretty good today, I think one of my down falls has not been eating early. Started feeling a little bad around 9:00 AM so I had a Bagel and felt better. I did some work on the fences line, then got some what side track with clearing sapplings, weeds and bush on the side of my house. On the fenceing deal when I pick someone I will have to have the fence cleared of brush.

Sad thing about yard wars today. I saw a 3 foot snake sunning it self on the pool cover, I think it was a black snake. Well, if my Wife saw it she would be in the hosptial and given all sorts of meds! So I had to kill it, and I hated to. I know they eat mices, bugs and in this case the frogs in the pool cover. I caught it in the pool net while it was making a swim for it, flipped the net up side down so it could not get out and beat it with a shovel while I was thinking of Jerry the Dunce

Work Wars At this point looks like things have blowen over. But I do have to work with Jerry the Dunce this coming Monday! Grumpy Hum, think I will take my Machete to work and see if he is Intimidated by me? Laugh  Right now I am not kidding, but more than likely I will change my mind. Well maybe not. Smile, Wink & Grin

 Later, Ken

Checking in during a small break (working till 23:00 today).  Sun is out in full force at IAD and, it so seems, that summer is now upon us.  I hope that this trend will continue through the weekend since I wish to try out the new power washer purchased two weeks ago.  Cut the lawn this morning before going to work, but still, have work to do in the yard and on the house with the power washer.

Hope everybody is doing well; needed back on the field.

All the best.

Hey guys. I don't usually post on these threads, but I am celebrating. I have been a train buff and a lover of train toys for as long as I remember, but I discovered the hobby of scale model railroading at a shop in a permanent "flea market" in Orlando, FL 20 years ago this week. I immediately traded in all my other hobbies--golf included--for this one and never looked back. I wouldn't trade this hobby for the world.

Mornin'.....  Ah...  Hmmmmmmm...  Ok Afternoon everyone!

Chloe, I just need a lot more coffee, Marrakesh Express, to keep me awake.

I spent about 35 minutes out in the back yard getting some sunshine on my torso to help control my psoriasis.  Good thing I got out there when I did as the sunshine has now turned into cloudyness.  Currently 86°F with a high of 89° later this afternoon.  Is supposed to be "Partly Cloudy" all day but I think that should get changed soon....

This afternoon I will be over at my son's house to be the designated "adult" to meet my Grandaughters when they get off the bus.  About a half hour after that their mom will be getting home.  I will have to take off soon after she arrives as I have a District Committee meeting tonight for Boy Scouts.

RideOnRoad, that sounds impressive.  I rather wish I had kept my bike I used to ride to school on days I was not over in Chemung when I first started teaching.  It did help me stay in shape, and was fun.  The other days I drove my souped up VW...Smile, Wink & Grin

Today is an anniversary, of sorts, for me. Twenty-four years ago today, I started recording my bike rides in a spreadsheet. Twenty-four years later I have logged every ride--miles, time, speed, and more recently, weather conditions and heart rate. In twenty four years I have--

  • Riden 106,000 miles
  • Spent the equivalent of 274 days on a bike
  • Recorded rides on seven different bikes
  • Had four car-related accidents
  • Had a dozen more self-inflicted accidents that drew blood
  • Loved almost every minute

On a separate topic, I seem to have some sort of an electronic jinx going on. First, as described in the "Electronics and DCC" forum, my trains have just stopped. It may be a transformer, it may be something else. Next, my cyclecomputer, the speedometer(+) for my bike is no longer showing my speed. I am hoping it is just a battery. The say bad things come in threes--I am waiting to see what fails next.

Morning all.

Flo, breakfast platter with scrambled eggs, bacon, whole wheat toast, and home fries please. And a tall OJ to go with it, thanks. Calling it brunch time.... And, if the asthma issues continue, a coffee will be next! Why asthma issues you ask? Well....

Weather front: Hot and humid here, 80's today and tomorrow, 90's Fri Sat, chance of "pop-up's" during the afternoon each day, from all the heat and humidity. We also have an "air quality alert" in effect, so really not good weather for those who have asthma, like me.... Heavy humid air with lots of ozone and other pollution... Not a good cocktail! Cancelled my AM plans due to that, but have w**k this afternoon... We already removed all the fragrance testers from the counter, as the store manager has issues as well with allergies and breathing, so she totally understands. Looks like my nebulizer will be going with me this week back and forth to w**k...

Speaking of w**k, that is getting interesting... All tux's came back on time, minus a few small parts, one kid couldn't find his tie till yesterday am, one kid lost a cuff link. The poor kid with the tie issue, he was really worked up about, felt bad for him, but he got it found and back to us just before the shipment went out, (by only about 10 mins... Close!) The cuff link kid, never brought it yet, so, looks like an additional charge in his near future. He was very flippant about it, and was a jerk to our staff, so, IMO that extra charge is deserved. (Left us a nasty surprise in his tux too! Stupid moron... I can say that right?) The tux company had sent us, on accident, an extra set of cuff links, but, they were used for a kid who was nicer to us, as one of his broke... All of us were in agreement that they would not be going to the jerk in question... Maybe if he was nicer.... Whistling

It is getting interesting, as, one manager is back in the hospital, having some major issues with side-effects from meds she is on for something else... And she really can't come off the meds as that would be bad. (No, not that kind of "off your meds!" Laugh) The store manager is also having some issues, family related... So, myself and the assistant manager have been the go-to's lately. My scheduled 26 hours last week turned into 36, and so far this week I am on track to hit 34, so I will most likely be cut back next few weeks to stay under the 30 hour 6 week average... Seriously dislike that rule... I was told a full-time spot would be opening soon, but I would have to give up a Sunday morning for it, I declined that offer. My meetings come first. Then anything else. So, as "punishment" I was given Sunday off, and am working on Memorial Day Monday, as the opener. So, my "punishment" is getting the INDY 500/Coke 600 off, and getting time plus holiday time on Monday, for just shy of 8 hours each? Whistling Something tells me that is not much of a punishment! Laugh 1100 miles of racing on TV, and extra pay the next day... Yeah, I am being severely chastised here! Smile, Wink & Grin (Based on INDY practice, it should be a very exciting race!)

Train front: Got a single car "dull coated" the other day, then my airbrush decided to not like me... Found a clump of something, stuck to the needle. (Strained the paint, so really unsure how that one happened...) Cleaned it, then lube with "needle-juice" and reassembled, then tested with a water-Isopryopyl mixture, worked just fine. Then I had to go to w**k, and haven't gone back to it yet. Used my monthly incentive bonus to order the cheaper spray booth from Micro-Mark, so that I can still airbrush on days like this one, where there is too much "junk" airborne to do anything outside. (Thanks to MRR for the bonus coupon, made the price just right!) Have just about got the BB cars ready to be clear-flat sprayed next, and am assembling the Accurail car now. (Upgrading to metal wheelsets, and Kadee couplers, of course!)

Well, I'm off now, going to try a cold shower and neb treatment before getting ready for w**k this afternoon... Hopefully avoid further asthma issues today. If needed, coffee will be drank. (The only time you catch me drinking coffee is for asthma issues, as the heat and caffeine help open up your airways more. So, you come here and see me in the corner with a cup-o-Joe, now you know what's up... Redbull will work in a pinch, but I dislike it more than coffee!) Just really makes me look like I have had too much caffeine, as the nebulizer will make me shaky, so don't ask me to hold a sheet of instructions for you while you work on anything! It will be a little blurry for you.....

Hope all is well, and all have a good day!

Afternoon, Folks!

Still in the dumps - my attempts to grab YGW´s ladder and helping hand failed. I must try harder, but with that little amount of energy I have left that´s not going to happen for a while. So, please bear with me if I am not a good sport and a happy camper.

Mr. B. - sent you a PM!

Chloe, mind serving me a mug of hot chocolate, please. That´s supposed to cheer one up!

Morning all

The sun is shining brightly in this part of Va. The scare over the great ball of yellow in the sky has now turned to smiles and Cool - sun shades ! May have to get out some sun block as we will be approaching the 90s. Looking forward to that for a change. Watched a youtube video of this incredible outdoor G scale last night before nodding off. What struck me were two things. The guy said if you do not turn and walk flat you can walk the tracks ! And the amount of maintenance involved due to weeding, frost heave, tree trimming etc... Makes me glad I am indoors with my RR !

Garry - Hope you can pop in and the rest of us crazies will be glad to help you keep your sanity Whistling . I am also extending more Angel for you.

Howmus - Good qoute on courage and very true too !

Ulrich - My friend here is a ladder and a helpng hand

Richard - like the old and slow qoute : )

Mr B  - LOL XP oil !

V8 - Ant hro pologist ? What is that !? An ant that carted off the picnic and is pologetic about it ? Whistling

James - What glue did you use on the dowels ? Mud ! I think it will take the entire month of June to dry us out Sigh

UP831 - I kinda of thought you like that style. One of the things i love about teh Williamsburg style is teh hand made bricks and the molded bricks. VERY nice and expensive too !

Ken - Jerrys is Nuts !? Whistling Laugh hey I talked to my landscaper this morning he recommends round up ( spray only on teh plant you want gone and premergence to tackle the weed before it germinates.

Well I have been interupted about fifteen times while tryoing to type this out. Need to go and settle the natives down. Couple of neighbers have seen a "rat rodent" leaving our site and they are getting out there pitch forks and torches and planning a friendly neighberhood roasting with me as the main guest Dinner How some old fat rat that is twenty yeatrs old is suddenly my problem I just do not understand !

Hi Rienhard, Lion, Jeremy, Jabear, DER ( WHERE ARE YOU ) ....

Gotta run ouch ouch hey watch that pitch fork ! Yike!!! that torch is HOT Yeawwwwwwww !

LION has been in hiding for a while, what with so many trips to Dickinson and Bismarck. Now is home with lots of work to catch up with. Here is a photo four ewe.

Hello  ..... Just want to thank everyone who expressed sympathy regarding my mother passing away. .... It was a beautiful funeral. .... I'll be busy taking care of many things for a while. There will not be much time for the model railroad for now. I do hope to get back to it soon because our hobby is good maintaining sanity.

 Evening Dinners Super Angry

Flo, a Beer and a LAW Round Please! Super Angry

Work War Front! Super Angry Why am I so Super Angry you ask? If you folks remember Jerry The Dunce and I no longer work together. Today I got a call from Paul the GM and said Jerry to meet with Marvin the owner because I am Intimidating him! Super Angry  I said "Hum Paul, I have not worked with Jerry for over a month, how am I intimidating him?" Whistling Paul had no answer for that question. Every one in the company knows that Jerry is not right in the head. Dead I never have got a follow up call about the meeting, so maybe they blew it off?

Yard Wars Steve and others thank you for your answers! Yes. I do have a 2 gallon spayer and it works fine on small areas, but spraying 500 Sq foot it will take a while. I did find this as Lowes.

 http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=91970-446-0430510&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3047321&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

It sounds like the ticket to me.

 Later, Ken
