GM, MEN!

I have not added to our tour of Colorado:

One thing well known is Pike's Peak. there is a cog railway  that will get you up it.

http://www.cograilway.com/

There, one can Climb to 14,115 feet and experience the magnificent panoramas that inspired the song America the Beautiful.

It is World's Highest cog train, ascending Pikes Peak in all seasons!!

One will find details for what one iwll encounter along the way here:

http://www.cograilway.com/along-the-route.asp

Just go to the link above and peruse the offerings. Tickets to ride are about $37.00 now. There are special trains, like a Santa express, and children are cheaper, and no pets are allowed.

SO, LQQK, SEE, ENJOY! Just remember: POP YOUR EARS!!!

Good morning, everybody ... Coffee and a donut please.

Galaxy ... We rode on the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's Pike several years ago. The air is thin at that altitude.

Good Morning,  I don't thinkI have ever been to this Cafe before. Can I get a cup of coffee, and listen to the conversations?

Like others, I was surprised to hear about Andy's passing; I thought it strange a month or so ago not seeing his column in the mag. Vacation,or something, I thought.  Never thought he might be sick.  It seems he has been there helping folks with their layouts and operations ever since I was a small boy.  We will miss him.

Firstly, Mr. MickWelcome! I am a fairly new visitor to the diner and have found to the regulars to be a friendly sort.

As for me, after nearly three months, we finally have an oven once again. Around the fourth of July, we were baking an apple pie (of course) and the door of the old oven got jammed. We finally got it open but it was not going to close properly again. (My dad used to tell me, there is no window that can't be opened. Closing it afterward may be a problem.) During the summer months in Arizona, we don't use the oven much at all, but with fall coming we decided to get a new one. The old one was an oven/microwave combination (wall unit) with a microwave that died about ten years ago. We now have a brand-new double oven, convection on the top, regular on the bottom. Unfortunately, I am headed out of town and will miss the first batch of baked goodies.

Welcome MrMick, you are amoung friends here.

While you are having that fine cup o Java tell us about yourself and layout or your plans for one.

You have stumbled on to one of the best secrets on the web (especially for us MR types)  I am sure Galaxy from NY. State or Ulrich from Germany will come on and tell you about the place and the small amount of rules and regs we cooperate with for our hosts (Kalmbach).

We have an International presence in the Diner and you will here from modellers from around the planet which really gives the place a special flavor.

Again,  Welcome aboard Mate.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, can I get a cup of decaf, please?

Welcome a board MrMick!  Yep, a good, friendly bunch of folks that hang out in here.  Be sure to tell us about yourself, what you model, and your hobby interests, as well as other types of stuff in here.  I'm sure you will told by a couple folks what the rules are.  Just keep off hot topics (Politics and Religion to name two) and be nice to the waitresses (don't want Vinnie to pay you a visit!) and you will be fine.

I got up this morning and when i started the computer, I looked out the picture window in the dining room to see a car with flashing yellow lights on top parked right outside in the street.  he was looking around, then got out and walked over to my drivway, then across my lawn to the other driveway.  Went back to his car and drove around the corner, got back out of his car and was checking out the other side of the house on the side street....  Had a official yellow and orange jacket on.  I grabbed my bifocals and the side of his car said Premier Utillity Service on it.  I think he was there to check over the property so he can give the official OK for the Paving company to come and dig on the side of the house where there aren't any utilities coming or going.....  That should all take place some morning next week.

I'm just taking a break from mowing the lawn.  Will probably have one more mowing before sn*w arrives around here.  Went and got my weeks groceries earlier.  At the checkout the kid asked me if I would like to buy a chance on winning a years supply of gasoline for a dollar donation to something or other.  I scratched my head and told him, "So you want me to spend a dollar to take a chance on a years gasoline for my plug in car?"  He thought for a second and completely cracked up.  He told me he really wants a Tesla, but knows he will never have the $$$ to be able to afford one.  Me Too!

Galaxy, I enjoyed the photos and the stuff at the website.  Will try to watch the video this evening....

Have a great day out there!

I'm just taking a break

... and that´s exactly what I will to, but not from mowing the lawn!

Good Evening Folks!

I have decided to take a break from this forum and, therefore, also from the Diner! A recent thread about squirrels was that proverbial last drop, which made the bucket flow over. The reason has to do with a lot of things which we are not allowed to mention or discuss here, but be assured it has nothing to do with any of the fine folks in here!

I have sent a PM to Galaxy to give further explanations.

A few things have to be sorted out, most of them in my own view on issues, before I may return.

I will, now and then, drop a note to our mutual friend G-Man, just to stay in touch!

Good morning ...... I'll have oatmeal and OJ, please.

Mr. Mick .... Welcome..... Feel free to tell us about your model trains or your layout or whatever.

Ulrich .... I'm sure you know your friends are always here for you. I suggest you think about what Ken said to you. I did not bother to read the thread you mentioned because the title did not sound like anything worth spending my time reading.

JohnBoy ... Anything new with your layout ?

Yesterday, I completed the small office building to go in the back corner of my layout extension along with other rural buildings and structures. Soon, I will work on scenery in that corner.

Happy Model Railroading.

Mornin' (I guess it is still more or less morning...),

I have already been out and around and busy this morning.  Picked up both dry and canned food at the Vet for the kitties, and then stiopped over to the Medical Equipment place just up the road.  I bought my CPAP Machine there a couple of years ago.  Yesterday I taked with the home office to change my Insurance ionformation and mentione to the lady on the phone that the humidifier doesn't appear to be working most of the time anymore.  She told me to take it to the local store for repair.

So when I stopped in the guy looked up my information and found that I recieved the machine on Oct. 23rd., 2013.  It has a 2 year warrenty...  He said I was right on the edge of the warrenty and he called the ResMed office to make sure it was still covered.  They told him it is still covered until January 1, 2016!  YES!!!  He is ordering a new machine for me, will let me know when it arrives, and we will simply trade them.  Blood presure came down a few points right away.

I am still trying to get a hold of a few NMRA members in Cayuga County to see if they will sign the petition we are circulating (they should, as it will benefit them the most) so far 2 have responded, and 2 haven't.  I will be on the phone after I get home from a Scout Roundtable tonight to see if they will answer their phone.  There is one more who I will need to call who doesn't have email.

Currently 62°F outside here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS with a higfh around 66°F later this afternoon.  I will be driving to Canandaigua early this afternoon to feed my sister's kitties.  I didn't see the outdoor cat when I was there last Monday.  Hope he is OK.

Have a great day!

dAVE WROTE "YGW  There is a spray in place foam insulation, called 2 pound walltight that gives a R-value of 5.7 per inch.  This is not do it yourself.  You build a 2"x6" wall an inch out from the masonary wall and have it sprayed.

You do not need a vapour barrier over it, just drywall.

This knowledge comes from watching too many home inprovement shows "

Dave we install the same system here in 2x4 walls and sometimes in 2x6. But we never achieve an R38 even in a 2x6 wall. We even caulk all of the jack/studs, dbl top plates, sill plates, calk teh outlets to teh drywall...I think it is the additional insulation installed on teh exterior of the wall that allows for the wall to be rated at R38.

Geez I cannot believe Andy has passed away. Very sad. Angel for his family and friends.

Mr. Mick - welcome to the forum Welcome

Ken - Luc the 3 N&W that was taken in "63" ?- Keep up the lemonade. I little balck and green tea is healthy also.  Did you spring any more leaks ?

Lion - I agree with your roof/church/giving comment

Vega - Is a little rain not worth the blessings recieved ? Just look at it as an added baptism Whistling

Ulrich - I am asking you to stay a part of the forum- You were one of the first to invite me into this post. I will always be grateful for your friendship. Dont let mead/rude people spoil your joy and fellowship. Hope to see you here soon.

Howmus, GARRY, gary, Chutton, GALAXY ....hello

Well today I am purchasing about twenty books on the N&W from a library of the James River NMRA. They have decided to sell the library. So I am going to start an N&W library and add it to my train room for research and relaxed reading. The books are being let go for less than 50% of face value. Good deal. Yet another reason to join the NMRA. Deals can be found when other members decide to change or trade equipment.

Gotta run. TTYL

Whistling

Good Late Morning Gang,

I slept in some this morning.  I like to do that at times when I have nothing scheduled, and am just giving myself some nourishment down the ol' tube right now and reading the Forum.

ULRICH, our dear Friend,  Most of us here consider you a true Friend,  a buddy even.  Just because someone says something that is either disagreeable to you or really p-ss-s  you off, a true Friend doesn't desert his other friends.  We are all taken back by your very quick descion and ask you to Please reconsider this and get back here amoung your Buddies, who really do care for and worry about you and Petra.

We were very pleased when your close friend, Claus stepped forward to give you a hand with that fine piece of furniture and we would like to continue to follow and enjoy your progess on your layout. We do eagerly await your return.  AND as Ride-On stated "it isn't often we get a chance to see a castle being built."   My Father had a great saying, I think, and that was "  let Fools have their foolish thoughts and don't let it bother you."

Garry,  I have been working on a little scene that will be to the right of the elevated station and under the main line track. It will look a little like an elevated railway with some small businesses and a road underpass at the back against the wall. There will be three sections of plate girder bridge and a couple of M.E. support structures. It isn't museum quality, but does pass the three foot rule. This became necessary as I didn't leave enough room( Newbe's take note ) between the main line and the wall to landscape/scenescape it properly. But I think it will look acceptable.  Will post a pix when I feel satisfied.  Glad you had a couple of good trips, I would have liked to be with you around that CZ observation car. Too bad you couldn't get into it.

YGW,  Glad to hear things are progressing good after your operation. Hope the flood waters were only a distraction for you and nothing major.

Moonboy, (James).  Sure hope your trip home goes well with no glitches for you. Really glad you had such a great summer in the north.  Maybe you will model a wild rice harvesting operation on your layout.

Well, I still have some yard clean up to do as the trees we have let their leaves down at different times, so the clean up seemingly is always in progress. I have a large crab apple tree that only produces very small apples and not worth doing much with. These apples stay on the tree until spring when the birds come back, and by then they must be like "ice wine" as the birds get quite drunk after feeding on them.  It is worth the price of admission to watch them.

Galaxy,  Hope you are feeling better and that shoulder is more tolerable for you.  Our fingers are still crossed in regard to the home you found and are purchasing.

Prayers and blessing to all others in need at this time.

Keep smiling,

Johnboy out.....................for awhile

October and it's still nice enough to ride my bicycle!  I went out for about 15 miles today on the mountain bike, first down the dirt right-of-way of the old Billerica & Bedford Railroad, and then the paved Minuteman Bikeway, an old B&M right of way.  The Minuteman Bikeway is one of the most popular and heavily used in the country.  They just re-paved a section.  Mmmmmmm.  New road smell.

Ulrich, if you're worried about the squirrels, remember that they are part of the ecosystem that mankind is constantly messing up.  In Germany, they are protected and cherished.  In the US, we have hunted and removed the predators that used to control them, and leash laws keep dogs under tight control, so squirrels overpopulate and can be quite a problem.  In particular, they raid our bird feeders, so we are asked to choose between one wild creature and another.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

It's been a long time since I have been in.  But it's good to see some familiar faces.

By the way: Get me a salad please.  Doc says I need to start eating like a wabbit.

Funny how fall winter and early spring are considered the best of times to model. Yet I can't get outside to spray paint in this weather.  One of these days I'll invest in a spray booth that doesn't cost an arm and leg.

I'll ave a cuppa decaf, it's late and I don't always sleep so well anymore.

I been working for awhile on a balky locomotive, but alls well that ends well, which it has, much to my satisfaction, and entirely due to friends on this forum. Earlier I went shopping for windscreen wipers for the boy's car, and they don't give them away. I might have to nick the boy for some recompense if he's amenable. Fallish today in Maine, but nice - best time of the year.

I am workingon a modle of the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad as it was when I was a small boy, climbing boxcars and such at the small yard in my hometown in Eastern Massachusetts. Haven't gotten too far yet, but most of the track is down and ballasted.  Been looking up information from the historical society so that I can be memory-accurate- not exact, but close enough.

Gotta go and see the Cubbies on the tv. Ulrich, I'd like to hear about your layout, I was a late arrival, hope you can return soon....

Be back later...

Mr. Mick, Digital Griffin:   A hearty Welcome to the diner.

COme once, come again, come often. Here we can talk Off Topic as well as about trains.

HEre friendships thatgrow stronger to a point we get really upsoet if one of us passes, hence the recent name change form Elliot's Trackside Dinner to Jeffrey's Trackside diner...whne Jeffrey, a close friend to many of us {as close as online frineds can be} passed away, we were all in favor of honoring him by renaming the diner in his honor. We also celebrate each ohters triumphs and commiserate distresses, be they train or LIFE.

SO Join us daily, weekly, heck even monthy on  aregular basis and become part of hte group!

Meanwhile I meet with the loan originator to drop off hte last ofthe required documents for financing for Underwriting. Sounds scary now. We will soon have a mortgage to pay! We WILL ahve an open house after, too  bad y'all cant come!

so I also see the surgeon on emergency visit aobut the shoulder. feels like hte muscle have been ripped form the bone. pain level up to a 12 out of top pain level of 10!

So i d best getot shower and ready,

later..

 Morning Dinners! Big Smile

Flo, big cup of Coffee pleases.

Sorry I did not stop my Wednesday. I was really feeling the need for a Beer on my days off I feel like something is missing. But I have not gave in and still sucking down Lemonade. Bought my last case of beer on 09-27 and I have now gone 7 days with out beer. New record for me.

To get my mind off of beer I took the wife to Golden Corral, first time I have eaten out this year. Boy, I ate a little of every thing. Fried Chicken, bacon, enchilade, meat loaf, crab sald, fried fish, pot roast, corn bread, black eye peas, some kind of Chinese beef, steam cabbage, bread budding and some ice cream. Like I said, small amout of the above, well not the ice cream. Smile, Wink & Grin Still over ate, but not as bad as the list makes it sound.

Smoking, still a struggle but I have gone from 2.25 packs a day to 1.5 packs a day. I get my Cigarettes cheap in MO. With tax it is $25.86 for a cartoon but that still works out to around $3.24 a day! Just got my Nicrette Gum and will be going to a stop smoking class soon.

I have been feeling the same as You.....and I know what You are talking about.

Well I don't understand what you guys are talking about? I read the post that put Ulrich over the top. Yes, it really was not about Model Railroading. I did get a few chuckles from the replys. My self, if I don't care or like a post on the main section, I don't read it. I all so mainly hangout in the dinner now. While I still have more to learn about the hobby I know what I need for the point I am at.

YGW Far as anymore leaks, not sure. Other day I heard (will I think I heard) drip's. For the last 3 days I have not heard any till this morning. I heard 2 or 3 drips then nothing?

Train Front Got the old Proto 2000 E-8 with the QSI decoder running, well some what. A couple times when I stop the engine it still goes into stand by? Hit the F-6 button and it starts moving again. Need to find out if shut down can be turned off.

Restat the decoder in my BLI Pargon NYC Hudson. While it runs fine now, the tender wants to derail. Need to look into that today, it use to track fine.

Welcome Mr Mick, sorry it has taken me so long to say hello.

 See you all later.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, nothing for me right now.  So far today I've had Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and it's not even noon yet...  A refill for the Seneca Lake Blend coffee would be good though.

Sun is trying to shine outside here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS this morning.  I'll be out driving around using the sunshine that is falling on my roof later this afternoon.

I have finally heard back from most of the people I need to see about the petition so I will get a tentative time schedule made as soon as I call one more gent and find out when he will be around.  I'll be hanging around the house most of today as the paving contractor should be calling to tell me what day he will do the paving for me next week.  At least he thought it would be then.....  Time will tell.  I'm still waiting to hear from the plumber and the painter.

Ken, Very good to hear you have been sticking to the "no more beer" promise.  Do know that I am pulling for you to be successful with both that and your giving up the cancer sticks....  The guy next door, a wonderful neighbor, ended up having a major heart attack and came home from a week in the hospital scared of even looking at cigs again.  That was just about a year ago, and now I see him out walking the dog, stop, and light up....  He is 10 years or so younger than me, and I expect to see his family gather at the house for his funeral one of these days.........  Hope to see you hanging around the diner for many years to come!

Galaxy, sounds like the house stuff is moving right along!  Hope the shoulder thing gets fixed soon and you will ultimately be able to w*rk a part time j*b.

Catch you all later!

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, Beer please, yes a beer!

Why can't my wife listen to me? Bang Head Guess it was about 2 months ago I posted here about my wife wanting to call aminal control on Tony down the street. He walks his boxer off the leash and my wife is afraid of it! She has complained to him about it and he let it go in one ear and out the other.

I told her then not to call aminal control, he will know it was her. My house is in bad shape, pool looks like a cement pound and my 68 Road Runner has a blowen out tire and no plates. I told her Tony can cause us (really me) alot of trouble with zoning! Guess what she did? She called aminal control! Bang Head

Well that was two months ago that she called and I thought maybe I was in the clear? Wrong! I got a letter from zoning today.

1 I must have the inground pool removed by 11-18-15. Not cleaned up but removed!

2 I must get rid of the none running none plated car!

3 States I have grass that is 11" tall around the fence? My grass has never been that tall, but I am guessing there is not a code for the small tress and wild grape vine's I have along the rear of the backyard.

I know they can make me clean the pool and close it properly. Now making me remove the pool, that I don't think he can make me do? Far as the trees and vines, not sure? If he could why did he call it grass? Needs to go anyway and I have hauled out a small hill of the one I have cut down this year. Far as getting rid of my 68 Road Runner, he can kiss my caboose! I have all ready spoke to Bob about hauling it down to his shop and getting the gas tank installed.

I will be calling the zoining inspector Friday and see what I can get by with. Depending on what the man says I maybe calling the law firm that helped me with Bank Of Stupid.

Biggest thing I am worried about is the funds. I still have a good chunk in saving, well small chunk. Credit Card has room on it. But I am worried about my credit score. If I am at 35% of my credit limet it hurts my credit sore. I would love to get the house Re Fi to get away from BoS!

Far as not drinking. Well with what happened today, why not! But, I will not drink after tonight. I know beer is not going to fix anything! But sometimes it helps for awhile.

YGW When would it be a good time to call you?

Why couldn't my wife walk Sparkie The Rocket Dog in the backyard? Sigh

Good afternoon ..

Ken .... It might be a good idea to butter up the authorities and get an time extension for the pool removal. It migh take a while to get a contractor to do the work. ... Tell them you want to cooperate even though you don't. ... Sounds like you can solve the problem with the car.

On the layout, I worked on scenery today in the corner where the rural grain elevator and the stock pens will be located.

Hello Railfans! Top of the evening to you! Hope everyones in bristol fashion and cuttin the mustard! I, myself am fine as a fiddle. Ive never felt fiddlier!

I dont know if i mentioned i actually took that job in Charlotte. Maybe I did. Just wanted to say thats doing pretty good. Puts a big damper on my hobby for the foreseable future (real big bummer!) though in turn, i still get to railfan.

The downside there is its still NS and CSX. Dont worry, I still will be hitting The Blue Ridge Southern in the canton area now and then. So onto the -

Railroad Front: Im putting along in my car kinda scoping things out. Checking out my new environment. Im aware of tracks either side of me. Mostly out of view behind either buildings or trees.

Not too long after a stop light as im toodling along, on the right side (which seems to be some kind of old mainline, now used as a secondary industrial line) comes up a familiar sight.

The angled hash marks in bright yellow on a not too shabby shade of reddish brown, stretched nicely over the form of an unmistakable face. An EMD.... of the second generation no doubt. But not your usual beautiful face (that only a railfan could love) but one reminiscent of younger years when the face paint was that of Amtrak.

Yep, you guessed it, an F unit. Aint seen one of those, and this close either, in many years. And not one, but two of them - back to back. Just sitting there. Well that right there i decided was gonna be my first railfan endeavor here.

Especially since the roadname on the sides plainly said RIO GRANDE. Now come on folks. Ive seen Canadian pool power in east Va, UP pool power in westside of Va, and even second hand SP/UP stuff in lil ole Canton. But Rio Grande?  Here???  On an industrial siding? In a paint scheme I have NEVER seen on a Rio unit before? Yeah, I had to come back and check this out!

So after I swerved back into my lane, and regained my cognitive driving abilities i resolved to make a trip back to this one spot. Before I got the chance, on a later worktrip into town, i happen to catch another absolutely gorgeous example of EMD 2nd gen power. I say gorgeous because it looked freshly outshopped with new paint. Yeah i know i rag on NS alot, but this looked dag gone good for an SD40.

And to add to the post several months ago about using high horsepower road units for lowly industrial switching.... this SD was shoving tank cars. It looked dang good doing it too!

On my return trip to the Rio units i made sure i came prepared with clean lense, and ample time. It was on a weekend so the place was closed. Open parking lot next to tracks that was not marked for no tresspassing. PERFECT! Because there they were sitting right next to it!

Upon closer examination i noticed in smaller lettering above the larger roadname the words "San Luis &". Reporting marks  "SLRG" and they were units 456 and 457. Never heard of it. Hot dog, more questions than answers!

Now, as per railfan dictate, i did the customary pictograpghical walk around ALWAYS EXCERCISING SAFETY FIRST(!), and found a few more items of note.

One unit (457) happens to be a slug. Very interesting as Ive never seen an F40 in slug form before. The unmistakable telltale signs of radiators capped off, fans removed, and high tension lines in the mu cableing.

Also during my encirclement, as I am looking down the tracks, behind the warehouse (not seen from road), low and behold a caboose! Couldnt get close to it though and saw no ledgable markings. It was a wide vision, so pretty much same era as the locos.

As usual, should anyone want pics i took just email me. I understand there is a steam loco on display here (not seen it yet) and atleast one more caboose on static display. I will get to those soon enough i promise!

Folks, I guess thats about it. Been a while since I got long winded with yall, I figured you were due. Yall enjoy the rest of your evening. See you folks soon!

I will start with a cup of coffee and a breakfast sanwich.

Douglas, it's hard to be too long-winded when talking about trains in here; Yours is an interesting tale; reminded me of the time I was in Fernandina, Florida and I saw some Gennesee & Wyoming locos, (officially the First Coast RR)hidden in the trees - it seems that they were the local freight for that area, hauling stuff of the mills, on some ex Florida East Caost tracks.  As they say, "Always expect a Train"!  My wife has fgooten use to my reubbernecking whenever I see a set of tracks across the road ( being careful driving, too , while I'm at it!)
