Good morning ..

UP831 ... Your childhood experiences with fire crackers and ant hills reminds me of my experiences. I used a cherry bomb to blow up a wasp nest. It blew of their wings so they did not fly after me. ... I also recall using a silver salute to shoot a chicken neck towards the sky leftover from a chicken we had for dinner.

Larry ... It is a good way to watch trains. When I grew up, I watched the Bulington main line west of Chicago from my bedroom window.

YGW ... Hornets nest ? ... Tell them to buzz off

G'day.  Got my coffee, had a bagel and I'm waiting for my Merrill Lynch guy to call to talk about moving money.  Gotta dodge taxes again.

Had a good long bike ride yesterday, around 30 miles.  It's mostly flat, but I did a bit of climbing.  The climbing part is tough.  This morning the scale said I'd lost 23 pounds since last week.  Perhaps I need a new scale.

I was watching the Tour de France last night, a recording of Saturday's stage.  As Ulrich has pointed out, it's hot in Europe, close to 100 degrees F.  This was a time trial, with riders starting individually, one per minute.  With 187 riders in the race, it took 3 hours just to get them through the start line.  A lot of them were wearing "ice vests" to keep their bodies cool until their turn came.

Morning diners,

Well I'm disappointed today. I decided to look at the BLI shipping schedule to see if they're shipping their EMD E series. Last month I check and they were going to ship them out in July and now its been changed to September.

I thought it might be too early to think about an HO Scale Southern Pacific layout when my eyes get to old for my N Scale layout. That would mean I would have to buy the some things again in a different scale.

All this talk of fireworks reminds me of what we used to do as kids. We would take two cans, a soup can and a tuna fish can, both empty. We would punch a hole in the top of the soup can, just large enough that the firecracker (Black Cat, of course) would snuggly fit into the hole. We would insert the firecracker into the hole, until just the top was exposed. We would put about 1/2" of water in the tuna can then set the soup can, firecracker end up, into the tuna can. Finally we would light the firecracker, which would send the soup can high into the air. Good times.

Garry - Wish I could. I am the head cheese here and what ever gets stirred up I have to calm down. It was an amazing conversation. First the guy calls me up 45 minutes into the 1st day back ask about my vacation and then immediately goes into either we pay him more money or he is walking off teh site, he cannot work in these conditions etc....Geez what a welcome back Bang Head

RideonRoad - we used to have fun like that here in Va until the bleeding hearts took over.

Andelob - Does that happen often when ordering new products from manufactures that they keep moving delivery dates ?

Mr.Beasly - Have a question for you on rider conduct. I live in an area of Va that is much like the areas of France where they ride teh tour de whatever. So as a result we recieve a lot of bike riders. It is a super dangerous condition for both biker and commuter. In most of teh area here the trees (some as big as 4' across ) grow right to the edge of the road. Problem is when there is a biker and two cars trying to fill the same spot no one has anywhere to go. The choice for all is suffer some type of ugly accident or head for the sideline filled with big trees.

Is there an industry standard that promnotes safety and courtesy of bike riders ? I think here the locals hate the riders ( usually City folks ) as bad as we are annoyed by their presence and attitude of they own the road and we should head for the tree filled ditches.

Goodafternoon, We safely made it back from our visit to my daughter's cabin in western Maryland for the 4th holiday.  The SIL had not planned on visiting as he was to be in court defending a malpractice claim (his normal work).  The plantiff's lawyer unfortunately dropped dead during the trial while questionning his expert witness.  Life is precious and should not be taken for granted for a moment.  My SIL was definetely shaken up by this experience.  Anyway, we had a nice visit and spent some quality time with the grandchildern watching them tube and wake board on the lake.  Celebrated the 4th with daughter, grandkids and a friend from here who also has a lake cottage viewing fireworks put on by the local community.  They shoot them off a ski hill.  Makes for great viewing.

Ken, I tried to answer your fence questions with the last response in June.  Frost depth in the east of St. Louis area is probably 28 inches.  You can obtain the official answer from the local building department.  If the old fence posts are still sound, treat them with Cupernol as previously recommended.  This is a good insect replenent and perservative.  I would set the post three foot deep if that gives enough above ground height to afix your fence.  Dig holes with a post haul digger and then set post, fill holes with sakrette mix and tamp down mix to plumb post.  Mix will set from soil moisture.  One 80 lb. bag per post should do the job.  I have set fences this way in the past.  Did one fence job with about 2500 ft of fence using 4x4 pressure treated post driven in with a vibrating post driver in northern Michigan.  Ended up with a very nice looking fence job using welded wire fence for the bottom six feet and three strands of barbed wire for the top two feet.  The post were placed four feet in the ground as the frost depth was about 42 inches in that area.

Ken, was the tunnel opening picture at the Museum of Transportation?

Johnboy, a friend sent some terrifying photos of the fires burning around the La Ronge area yesterday.  Sure hope they get them under control soon as the smoke has to be horrible all over Sask.

Time to mow the grass.

YGW- Manufacturers like to make estimated dates for products.

BLI moved their E units delivery in Sept to July.

BLMA has been moving their ATSF beer cars the past year. It was supposedly be delivered in fall of last year to early this year and now they're saying July/Aug.

There's more examples, but when I preorders items I have money for it. My problem is when that money sits to long it gets spend on another train item.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a hot fuge sundae and a cup of decaf for now.  Thank you Ma'am!

Well.....  (A deep subject...), I was about to type up a post this morning and there was a knock at my door.  I wondered who had the nerve to interupt me while here at the forum, and it turned out to be my son.  He stopped by to tell me he had a 1PM interview for a job in the Canandaigua area and asked if I could watch the granddaughters when he went for the interview.  I bet you all know my answer to THAT!!!  It was about 11AM then so he was going to take the girls home, hgive them lunch and drop them off on hios way to Canandaigua.  the granddaughters had a different idea, and "Papa" (me) got to have them stay right at my house for the next 4 hours...  They helped me with a couple projects (meaning they got to hold the level, the screws, the drill, and "help" me put up the old Quacker style coat pegs in the living room.  They got to see what I have been up to in the train rooms (they were very much not happy that I couldn't have them run trains today).

They ended up having some scrambled eggs for lunch and some sun chips, milk and a granola bar.  Then they found in one of the bedrooms I use for storage, the old Thomas the Train set I got for them a few years ago.  They got that out, put it together, and a had a great time playing with it until their dad showed up and spoiled all the fun....  They are two beautiful, sweet little girls!

The rest of the day I did odds and ends of STUFF needing to get done.  I was hoping the Amish Furniture place would call with a time they will be delivering the entertainment center and the two hutches.  Really can't do anythimg more until the furniture arrives...

Hope you all are having a great day out there!

 Evening Dinner

 Flo, Beer Please

Lets not talk about work tonight. Whistling

Jim, yes I read it the first time I asked about it. I just need to call city hall and see what they say. I just thought YGW might have a web site that would tell what it is.

Far as Cupernol I did a goggle about it. Seems it is made by the same company that makes I.C.I Paint. I used ICI on my 69 Dodge Charger and other higher end paint jobs I did, great stuff! While I was reading about it, I never saw where it would kill bugs that are living in the wood? Did you say it came from Ace Hardware?

80 lb. bag per post? My back is all ready hurting thinking about it! And that is just carrying it into the garage so it will stay dry! Whistling On one side alone I need / should replace 11 post.

Far as the Tunnel shot, yes that was taken at the St Louis Museum of Transportation.

 See you all later, Ken

Morning, Folks!

For the first time in years, I got 7 hours of sleep without interruption! Went to bed at 10pm and got up at 5am.

Flo, i´ll celebrate that with a big breakfast and make everything Barry-sized, please!

Today´s tour takes at to the island of Rugen in the northeast of Germany. Public transport on this island is largely by steam train, although the network is only a third of what it used to be.

I have two bonus videos today.

# 1 shows a steam train operated on the shortline between Wilstedt and my hometown to celebrate the centennial of the line. Too bad I missed the occasion!

Video # 2 shows a little bit of rail fanning at the train station of my home town.

Enjoy!

Cudaken- Cupernol can be found at Ace, Tru-Value, Lowe's, Sears--- most any paint store/hardware store. There is a Sacrete mix that has been developed for mailbox posts, fence posts--the post is placed into the hole, the bag is dumped around the post, bucket of water, wait 10 min. and it is good to go. herrinchoker

Good Evening or Morning for those in more easterly time zones,

Not a lot to report here. The bathroom reno is on hold for now as we have to get the vanity cut down a little as it is too high. My wife thought she wanted it high so she doesn't have to bend over as much as she is tall and has a bad back but it turns out that she has to twist to see in the side mirrors which hurts her back more so we will get the vanity lowered a couple of inches. Luckily the countertop and sink haven't been installed so that job will get done on Thursday.

I have been running trains a little with the U2g Northern getting a little exercise. It is a beautiful engine but really too big for my little layout. I only run it on the outer loop which has 22" radius. It will go around 18" but sure isn't happy doing so.

The smoke from the fires in Saskatchewan has abatted which is nice but it isn't due to them going out, just a wind shift. Someone mentioned LaRonge. It is in northwest Sask and they have shut down the town due to the fires. Johnboy mentioned that it is very dry where he lives. I'm about a 6 hour drive east of him but we have had normal rainfall here. The ground is damp and the grass is very green.

We did a lot of errands today so tomorrow it will be a 'home chore' day with mowing, etc. on the agenda.  I lead such an exciting life.

Well, time to say goodnight, so goodnight.

Good morning ...

Frank .... Tha was funny

CN Charlie .... I bet that locomotive looks very nice running on your layout.

All morning I can hear the loud pounding of a big pile driver about 1 1/2 miles from here.  A large highway bridge over the lake has been under construction starting in March this year. Another large bridge (about 15 miles west of here)  is farther along because it was started a year earlier. Eventually, we will have a modern, 4-lane highway with modern bridges going east-west through here. The 80-year old, narrow bridges will be dismantled when the new bridges are done.

Ken - send me an email I can send info much easier that way and quicker. Did you check your private messages yet ?  The rusty vine covered diesals doesnt hurt my heart as much as the steam but it still makes me ache and think what a waste !

ZStripe - LOL that is a funny photo. True to, I believe !

Galaxy - thanks for not jinxing my vacation. Enjoyed the time off. Even though I did work really hard around the house. What is " GM Men" ?

Ulrich - Congrats on the sleep. Wish I could get a good nights rest like that !

Ray - Your post on your granddaughters sure made me smile. That is some GOOD STUFF there.

My day yesterday ended great. Recieved some ebay train purchases and the MR mag came in all in the same day ! This morning did not start off so nice. Stupid city dog ( my wifes ) ran out this morning and confronted a skunk ( country dogs mostly know better ) and the skunk gave her a good ole spraying Ick! W ehad some cans of tomatoes and washed her with that first and then used dog soap. Knocked the smell down a little BUT she still stinks Ick! Bang Head. Will be giving her another tomato soup bath tonight.

Gotta get back to w**k

Happy Lunch Hour Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

Just a quick lunchtime note.

Just realized that Sir Winston Churchill died 50 years ago in 1965.  I don't remember the exact date, but anyway, taking a moment to recognize a man who was instrumental in preserving Western society.  Whether that's a good thing or not could be debated in another forum I suppose.

Ken:  Those pictures of the abandoned equipment are interesting and at the same time disheartening.  One can just imagine that those locomotives steaming or throbbing along completing their days' tasks in a hub of activity.  Stirs the soul.

CN Charlie: Sad to hear that you have to have your vanity cut down.  Be sure to check the drain height under the sink to make sure everything will fit.

I wish to take a second to point something out.  If one has the means to engage the services of a professional Interior and/or Kitchen and Bath Designer, they could have gathered enough correct information about what the client wants to have averted a bad situation.  Even though they would be more expensive up front, they could have saved more money in the long run by specifying the correct cabinet in the first place.  Just sayin.'  I hope everything works out.

ill get off my soap box now.

Big SmileBig SmileSoapBox

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Whistling

G'd Morning Gang,    (well I started this in the morning)

Thought I'd stop in for a Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwich. (can you believe it, that is what they are selling at the Calgary Stampede this year. But their Cockroach Pizza got shut down as the Border security wouldn't allow the Cockroaches across the Border). Chloe, I'll chase that with a diet Pepsi, Thanks.

James,  The fires are really bad and about 100 of them are not contained. 113 of them in all this morning.  They start about 300 miles north of here and go all the way to the NWT.  Just as many burning in Alberta and more in British Columbia, so the situation is really bad in the whole west of the country.  They now have the largest water bombing helicopter in North America here from Montana capables of dropping 1000 gals to a pin point and doing 25 drops an hour.  Another regular water bomber is here from Newfoundland as well as the three or four that we have of our own in the province. We also have fire fighters from Ontario and Quebec supplimenting our guys and now we have 1500 of the Army getting some intense trainging today before going in to assist as well, with another 1500 on stand-by.

Smoke is pretty intense some days but it does go and come depending on the winds, but it is much worse the closer you get to the fires, such as in Saskatoon and Prince Albert. There has been 7000 people evacuated from the northern part of the Province and they are being put up here in Regina, Saskatoon ,PA. on Beardy's First Nation Reserve, North Battleford and some went to the Cold Lake Air Base in Alberta.  This is the biggest evacuation ever in our Province.  If you are so inclined, Prayers for the FireFighters,Volunteers and Care givers as well as the Evacuees would be appreciated.

GARRY,  Is that the Bridge that the tug and barge ran into awhile back ?  It would also be neat to watch the fireworks from your boat.  Thanks for creating the parade for Independance day, that was great.

Ulrich & Galaxy,  Prayers continue for you guys,  We want these issues to be over for you and soon.  My Son in Montana cut his ring finger with a skill saw a couple of weeks ago.  NO:::: he didn't cut it off, just took the side of it from the big knuckle to the finger nail. touchedthe bone just a little and cut a tendon, but all will be well.  He remembers he was holding the blade guard up to make a real fine cut, which in hind sight , he says he could have just planed or filed it off.  Tough lesson learned.

Ulrich,  Glad you getting some sleep now,  and thanks for the great Videos.  I was never really interested in European trains, but these Vids. have sure perked my interest, and what great scenery. My Wife and her Sisters are going to the British Isles and France at the end of Aug, I can't go because of the feeding problems but I will sure miss the train rides that they are planning on.

No news on the LM&E front, I am too busy catching up on yard things that didn't get done at all last year while I was recuperating from Treatments.  Yard is starting to look much better and I am real pleased with the way the lawn has come back.

Just had an interuption here as a repair guy was here to get a strange noise out of our refridgerator.  It was the damper door and motor that sends the cold air up to the fridgerator from the freezer on the bottom.  Had it done in about 15 minutes and only left me with washing down the shelves and putting the food stuffs back in place.  Normally my Wife would be all over that, but she is out taking her Sister to a Dr's appointment.

Lots of great work being shown on WPF. and other threads. I sure enjoy seeing it, and it inspires me to continue on.

Not as hot here the last couple of days and that is a welcome relief. It was pretty intense there for awhile, although not like Nevada or the southwest States. You Guys are either real tough or you stay in your air conditioning.

Dinner  Guess it's time to get the stomach tube fired up and get some vitals in the belly to sustain me. No change on the closed off esophagus and I don't think I am up to trying to dilate it again with no promise of success.  I guess I just have to get it in my mind that what it is is what I've got and be happy I can keep myself alive, and that I am Cancer free.

Well enough of this rambling from this Prairie Boy, so I'll sign off for now.

It's a problem here, too.  Many of our roads are narrow, two-lane affairs which are now handling more traffic, heavier traffic and faster traffic than what the cows and horses who designed them ever planned on.  To make matters worse, "deferred maintenance" and other budget-cutting have left the sides of many streets crumbling, forcing bikes to ride further out into the traffic lanes.

When I bike, I try to stay as far to the right as I can, but at times I know there's not enough room for a car and me to share the lane.  When I drive, I try to be very aware of bikes and not pass if I don't have ample room.  This includes bikes coming the other way, as I know cars passing them will be intruding into my lane.  I also do my best to avoid busy roads.

Technically, bikes are "vehicles" and have all the rights and responsibilities of motor cars.  I take the "responsibilities" part seriously, and try not to push the "rights" part too much.  After all, I'm the one that's fragile.

Good afternoon everyone,

Was sent home early from the job today...was home before noon. Not enough work to support the number of employees. Oh well...an early start to my weekend.

Been having unnervingly powerful Tstorms this week so far. Many places around the Reno/Carson City/Tahoe area, in the last few days have had large percentages of their yearly ave. rainfall taking place in hours. Not right. Flash floods muddying all over the highways. More tonight. Glad I live over 60 ft above the valley floor.

Right now I'm tinkering with a dash cam for my car...want to see how it well it works. I'm a white knuckle driver who drives the speed limit or a little less...as conditions warrant. Tired of abusive drivers harrassing me. If this dash cam works out, I'll get another one to face rearward so I can get plate numbers to turn in for those who insist on tailgating.

Off to the Dr tomorrow afternoon. Got to get something done about the right side sciatic nerve. It's keeping me awake...dangerously and causing me to limp more heavily on an already damaged right leg.

Movie night tonight...as long as the incoming storms don't kill my power. Looking pretty nasty right now.

Well...I think that's enough.

Take care all

JohnBoy ... You have a good memory. The bridge accident was 2 1/2 years ago. We almost lost neghbors who were on another span of the bridge which did not fall. It was a river cargo ship, not a barge and tow boat that knocked a large span into the water. ..... It was not on our lake, but the lake 15 miles west of here. ... The old bridges will taken down when the new ones are completed.

LION holds the speed of him to about 78 mph. Not fast enough to attract the attention of the gentelmen in the brown uniforms. State Police generally run about 10 mph under the speed limit this way the get to see more automobiles as they pass them. (The state police out here do not operate 24 hours a day. Nobody is on duty (but many on call) between 0300 and 0500.

LION normally drives the left lane which is permitted here, and does not weave in and out. Him never tailgates (unless him is cut off by someone waithing for the last minute to pass that slow truck). Him moves to the other lane about 1/4 mile before approaching you, and does not return to your lane until him about 1/4 mile ahead of you.

Of course we do not have all that much traffic here that others will slide into your gap. Speedy Limit is 75.

On my way home from work this afternoon...on I80, I had a truck driver tailing me by a car length at 70 mph in the right lane. He had no obstacles to pass me...but he chose to tail me...anyway. Speed limit is 70 at that area.

I'd been considering a dash cam for some months...but this put me over. I don't like to drive to begin with. This is like a disease with people...at the wheel of a 3000 lb + weapon.

Sounds to me like you take some responsiblity when you drive...but there are far too many that don't.

Trucks are not allowed in the left lane on many roads.  So, he may not be allowed to pull over and pass.  Although it may seem more dangerous, and probably is, you might consider pulling over yourself to let him pass on the right.

Mark H {crostler61}:

DID YOU know/ARE YOU AWARE that YOU can be ticketed for GOING TO SLOW/ BEING A NUISANCE/CAUSING A HAZARD to the "flow of traffic"???

Yep.

SO don't get so full of hatred... YOU COULD be the problem, NOT them...and using a dash cam to "prove they are guilty" can get YOU into trouble if they deem YOU were a HAZARD.

SOme highways or toll roads have signs that say "speed limit 70/Minimum speed 60", and if you are caught below that lower limit YOU will be ticketed.
EVEN roads WITHOUT such stipulations you caan get tice=keted for going to slow.

Mr. B is right,,,some areas have "no trucks in Left lane" stipulations. Even if not, some trucks have a regulator taht may not allow them to pass you but would allow to tailgate you. TheyALL want to get to their destinsicker the better.

In short, IF YOU cannot handle such traffic, find an alternative route. It may ease EVERYONE's nerves.

Not coming down on you, JUST ALERTING you to it.

well it got to about 85, and the a/c could only keep it at 74 inside. COncerns me some. last thing we need is to replace the furnace, and fix hte bath floor and to buy a new a/c...!!! It is like 5 years old or older....

have a great nights sleep,..I HOPE I get to sleep, too, ULRICH...

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I was gpoing to be in earlier but about the time I got here we were having a freakish storm with lots of precipitation and a whole lot of wind, so I shut the puter down and watched the fun outside....  I would like a cup of decaf if you can.

Speeding?  Driving too slow??? A few weeks ago I was doing 72 (70 actually as the Pip like many cars is always showing 2mph fater than actual speed) on the 6 lane portion of the NYS Thruway (65mph speed limit meaning if you are driving less than 85 you may get pushed by a car or two).  I was right near the exit where it changes back to a 4 lane and was in the center lane, when an idiot in a "VeryExpensiveNameBrandAuto)  Came up behind me in the inner lane (I had just passed a car that I thought was going to exit and didn't) doing at least 100 mph.  Since his lane was ending he zoomed in behind me and squeezed in front of the guy I just passed and kept roaring down the highway yacking on the phone.  That was when I noticed the gumball machine sitting just past the exit at the on ramp....  I pulled over into the right lane and let the nice officer head past me with lots of lights on....  About a mile and a half down the road guess who was pulled over???  I love Karma!

I too have a dash cam on the PiP.  You can get some interesting things recorded at times.  Here is one where I was doing just the speed limit on I-390 and exit to go on to the NYS Thruway.  Had to change my underwear when I got home.....

They do come in handy if you need to prove what actually happened...  Oh sorry about the language at the end, but I think I can be forgiven under the circumstances...

I finished taking apart the old firewood frame today.  That and getting my grocery shopping done for the week, reading the paper, and generally vegging out filled the day.

Hope you all have a good one!

 Evening Dinners

Flo, a Beer please and 15 gallon's of Cupernol Paint please.

Work Front Sigh I am 95% sure Nancy will let Dave come back when he is out of rehab. Bang Head That will be a slap in the faces to everyone that really cares about working here. Reason I think this?

1 Been told that Nancy likes to tip a few Drinks at work sometimes. Not that I have ever seen it, but she has called a few times while she was Drinks up.

2 She wants me to call his wife and find out where he is staying, so she can send him something, hum, a bottle? Whistling Why can't she call? I will add she was Drinks when she told me to do it. I have got to get out of this places!

Herrinchoker and Jerry I think that is Z Strip name? I have done a keyword search at Lowes and Ace Hardware for Cupernol Paint and came up with Zero matches. Any ideas or links?

YGW What time frame can I call in my time? I will try a test E-Mail in the next day or so. AOL does not play well with some accounts.

 Latter, Ken
