I am back from my two-states-in-three-days-including-travel tour of the northeast. (Plus two mores states if you count flight connections.) The time zone change really wears on me. I am back home now and may try to find some time for a little more ballasting. Things are quiet as the grandtwins went back to Idaho.

Speaking of the grandtwins, there was a bit of excitement on the home front while I was back east. One of the twins was stung by a scorpion and had a rather severe reaction. He spent a few hours in the emergency where the treatment included receiving anti-venom. Small wood scorpions are relatively common in these parts, and the sting is mostly just an annoyance, but can be severe in young children and the elderly. I have been stung once and it hurt like a son-of-a-gun, but I was fine. Scorpion venom is a neuro-toxin, and it likes to settle in the extremities. For days, a couple of my toes and the tip of my nose was numb.

On the weather front, we are under a flash flood watch until Saturday afternoon. Rain is forecast and there aren't many places for the water to go in the desert. The ground is fairly hard and cannot absorb rain in any quanity so it just runs into washes (arroyos) and floods things.

Good Afternoon Diners,

YGW:  I can sure get behind the granite and Silestone, but you mentioned that the cabinets were over 50K.  I can't imagine full custom cabinetry in new construction.  Who makes the cabinets?  And, how many sq ft are the kitchens?  Are the designs nice?  That's a not too subtle hint to post a rendering If you can.

Gotta go.

Richard ... Hope your traveling was good.

YGW ... I suppose you are building houses for DC bureaucrats to live in style. I had better not say more.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo Beer Please.

Well the day started off great! Felt good and ready to do something this morning when I got up! Filled a 30 gallon trash can with dead sticks and leaves from the patio. Dump dirt out of some of the un-used and some broken planters and threw away the broken ones. Sweep the patio some and cout down one 5" tree and about 10 saplings. Just to bad I had to go to work.

YGW I will call you Friday I hope. Boy I wish you lived close by, I love the N&W Class A! Is it a BLI engine? Is the phone number a cell? It said home phone in the PM you sent.

 Later, Ken

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of decaf and a Butterscotch Sundae would be great before bed tonight...

Tonight was the monthly meeting of the Museum at the Museum.  During the summer it is a very short meeting followed by train rides.  Funny thing happened when we were up in the upper yard tonight.  The young man who was the conductor tonight, a recent graduate of RIT, was standing across from the locomotive next to the rail of the neighboring track from the one the train was on.  He was talking with a member and I happened to notice he was standing right next to a clump of poison ivy.  I waited for a break in the conversation while watching where he had his foot.  I finally told him to be careful where he was stepping because he was right next to the poison ivy.

He looked at it and informed me that wasn't poison ivy as it was growing out in the sunshine and poison ivy isn't found in sunny places.  I tried to correct him telling him I have been teaching ID of such plants for 40 years as a Scouter.  He waived me off and finally, since his mom and dad were there he went and got his dad, informing me his Father had a PHD in Plant Studies from Cornell University.  I said said OK by me and he called his dad over.  He pointed to the clump, said, "Dad what is that?"  His dad took a quick look at it and said, "Son, that is poison ivy!"  Kid says, now dad are you saying that poison ivy grows in full sunlight?  Dad nods his head and says, "Yep!"  I just stood there with a smirk on my face.....  I ended up having a great conversation with his father.  Turns out at one time his father taught Middle School English.  The conductor was not happy....... WhistlingLaugh

Have a great night everyone!

Good night dinners,  we arrived at our destination of Denare Beach, Sask. with one hiccup along the way.  We stopped at a Walmart to buy milk and juice about 15 miles from our destination.  When we came out to leave, the battery was dead after 147,500 miles and 9 years of battery life as it was the original Delco battery.  Fortunately, Canadian Tire was on the other side of Walmart and they had a replacement battery for a 2006 Chevy Colorado.  We have been driving for four days and managed a daily rain event.

We ran into a wall or forest fire smoke about 75 km south of our destination.  So, the fires, while mostly contained are still burning.  Hope the smoke clears up soon.

The tote of model tools and models made the trip in good shape.

Time for much needed sleep after an all day drive.

Prayers go out to the families of the Marines' killed in Chattanooga.

Good Evening

Oh sciatic nerve...how you are a great pain in the...behind! Literally.

It's at it's worse in bed, so that means a lack of sleep from intense nerve aches and tweaked muscles. Muscle relaxers, anti inflammatories, etc. No bueno. Medical professionals, and I use that term loosely, scratch their heads, mumble alot then put their hand out for my copay. It has my bad leg...the right, even more trashed than the aftermath of cancer 5 years ago. I'm walking like a cross between Quasimoto and the Elephant Man. The nerves from the right lumbar downward are so painfully scrambled. Back to walking with a cane...I guess.

Frustrating!!! Bang Head

Anyway. Was thinking of going to Carson City tomorrow to poke around and also get in a little time on the range. Nah. I want to chase trains and get some video action even if it's all UP. There's a few good places along I80. My back doesn't rage so much sitting in the car.

Well...we will see what the neurologist has to say when I ultimately get there.

Take care all

Good Morning, America!

The heat is coming back! Today´s high is expected to be in the upper 90´s again - too much for me to feel comfortable.

Today´s video is an episode of my favorite TV show "Railroad Romance", telling the tale of the Federsee (Feather Lake) narrow gauge line in southwestern Germany. The line was closed in the late 1960´s and subsequently dismantled. Today, there is hardly a trace left.

The video contains a lot of historical footage, filmed in the late 1950´s and early 1960´s. It shows what rural life was about during my childhood days.

Narration of this video is in German, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Enjoy!

Ken Wrote - "YGW I will call you Friday I hope. Boy I wish you lived close by, I love the N&W Class A! Is it a BLI engine? Is the phone number a cell? It said home phone in the PM you sent"

Yes it is a BLI and yes the number is home. I will post and give you my cell number. This evening I will not be able to communicate - implant at the torture house (dentist ) Can you call Saturday ?

Galaxy - I wonder if "lilly livered" and white liver is the same ? Drinking during working hours is very rare on my site. Everyone knows that I expect the sight to be run safe, no drugs, reasonable safety equiopment required etc...

Garry - I wish that I could tell you that Americans were buying these homes. We have sold several to the chinese. Some to Saudi... one american. Says something about our policies....

up831 - send me your email address in the PM and I will email you some photos, video etc of teh site and interiors

Don - thanks - going to the dentist at the end of the day

Jim - you have a chevy colorado ? I had one that had close to 300k miles on it. Would have been more miles but it had an unfortunate run in with an Oak tree - the tree won. Whistling

If anyone wants to see a link or photos of teh stuff I am building put your email address in my PM and I will shoot over some pictures or the video. I do not feel comfortable posting company info on this site.

Gotta run. Say a prayer for me and the dentist ( it is gonna hurt a LOT ) and hope everyone has a great weekend while I am recouping this weekend.

I hope you don't cut corners to be ontime, under budget, built to minimum code Whistling

WHy? we just had a hospital parking garage collapse here...all 35 years ago built to minimum code, but the lowest bidder, who probalby cut corners and used inferior concrete... sad...

RAY: I got poison ivy this weekend.. I am assuming it was at Sterling renaissance festival, as if you havee never been there, it is out in the woods, on  a hillside under some trees. Alhtough I wore good foot-covering shoes, I managed to get it somehow on the top bridge of my foot....mystery, unless it is in the yard here all of a sudden, or by the mailboxes here, it is overgrown as hte trailer on tht corner got pulled as unsafe, so the guy who lived there and was immaculate aobut the lawn is now gone. I Looked studiously there today, but sid NOT see "leaves of 3", but i let all the overgrowth be.

Well, after my fiasco with CPEP and the hospital, my friend has a son {who I swear is undiagnosed bipolar } who reacts like I do {I am BiPolar, remember}, Except he is into a certain currently illicit drug, soon to be legal I guess and an alchy, I can say that as a former alchy whose once suicide attempt {third} included downing a bottle of vodka and taking all my sleep-inducing pills, hoping to never wake up again.

ANYWAY..He {the son}got into a drunken fight with his GF and sliced his arm wide open when he said he'd kill himself if he did't get his way. So He DId, take a sharp knife to his arm {requiring 7 stitches to repair}. WHile he called my friends wife {the kids mother, who dotes on son} went and took him to the hospital< while there the police showed up as the GF had called the cops and said he tried to kill himself. He was taken over to  the local hospital that DOES actually have a CPEP {Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program} {{Where I SHOULD HAVE GONE}. He said to them "Im not going to hurt myself" and THEY LET HIM GO HOME!!! He SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT!, This is not his FIRST rodeo with CPEP{who has yet to admit himas he alwys claims NOt to wnat to hurt himself}, so I am surprised with his slashed arm they DIDN'T KEEP him. Sheesh!

I know they are shutting down the "criminal insane" commited institutions, the hospitals CPEP are probably full of those when they go 'whacko' {i am priveledged to say that} at teh residence house. It was also a SUnday nght {last one} and they DON'T like to do admissions/discharges onthe weekends, so htey'd have kept him in hte ER, adn the longer he would have stayed the more they would have had to stra him down. Wifey "doesnt want him {son} to "have a record" of mental illness" on his "record"....NO SHAME in having one, only SHAME is in NOT doing somehting about it!!! Of course, when the kid had antidepressants, he refused to take them. DUH!

The wifey/mother DOES NOT help her "little boy" {last child}!!!

GRRRR.

Have  a restfull nights sleep I am back to NOT SLEEPING again.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could use a tall glass of lemonade with a sprig of fresh picked mint please.

V8Vega
Huge brush fire in the Cahone Pass, with cars getting caught on the freeway and burning, a car carrier and another big rig has burned. This is a very remote area and there is no way out. This is the big freeway from LA to Vegas.

According to the Los Angeles Times: "A drone flying near the San Bernardino blaze forced crews to abandon air drops, which would mark the third time in a matter of weeks that firefighters have been grounded because of the devices."  Hope they catch the idiot and throw the book at him (her).  Could be a news channel out there as well, I suppose...

I have been continuing to move books, do-dads, and my old collection of VHS tapes and DVDs back into the living room, in between weeding more garden and side dressing the squash with a bit of Urea (nitrogen) to give them a bit of a boost.  Been cloudy and drizzly most of the day.

My son stopped by this morning with the granddaughters.  He came over to get the rest of the frame that I used to stack firewood.  Says he has the firewood for next winter already ordered.  Part of me will miss the wood stove.  Used to love to lay down on the carpety near it and just soak up the warmth some times.  Won't miss all the stacking and carting wood and disposing of the ashes though.

Well, I wished you all a resstful night's sleep, and said i wasn't sleeping well, so Here I arae, a whole 4 hours after I went to bed. I LIKE my 7-8 hours of sleep, but don't always get it.

Ken: I wouldn't trust that fence post thing, thought It looks like MAYBE it would hold if it was just a single post in the middle of a fence, but i wouldn't be trusting it for more than that. Here, driving that into the ground could be a problem due to stones, rocks, etc. so you might almost have to dig a hole for it anyway. best of lluck to you replacing it though! good luck for sales on Saturday, so many you will lots of money and not have time for a phone call.

Ray: We have thought about a wood sotve, but I can't do the hauling either. MOH has enough trouble with the snow removal. I couldn't expect MOH to do the wood hauling either.. and our firned had  a wood pellet stove, but after hauling pellets for a few winters  in a big old rambling victorian{and a strong son {yes the one previously menitoned}} to help, he gave it up. Besides,, it is not allowed in our trailer park rules, and he just moved to one {jealous of our size compared to the big victorian}, so he can't have one either.

He is the one I called "train nut friend",, as he is just as crazy about trains, steam trains as we are. he had ot miss our trip to Connecticut to ride the steam train/boat ride, though, Had no funding. There is no arguement if he wants to go along when we go steam-train hunting! we odn't alwas need a "tag along" but he is good company so MOH allows it,and has no argument...

well, I will peruse the net and then try to get some sleep, if it will come..

ULRICH: I hope you enjoy your weekend off the PT! How has the stroke affected your speach in any language? When my MIL had hers, it affected her L side, adn left her speach intact, in both English and German, fortuantely. When My mother had hers, it took away her speach capabilities.Along with another disease attacking her body rendering her a quadraplegic, it took away her last vestige of life for her last 5 years of life. I WISH you beter results!

well I will watch some TV..and then try to sleep again...

Sigh

Good Morning, Folks!

Just like our friend Galaxy, I did not catch much sleep this night. I woke up after only 3 hours and could not go back to sleep again for a (long) while. It´s just too hot & sticky.

galaxy
How has the stroke affected your speach in any language?

My speech was affected a little in the first days after the stroke, but recovered quickly. It´s mainly my left leg troubling me now. The left arm and hand are quite OK, though quite shaky. PT helps to a degree to improve, but full recovery is written in the stars. It is like it is...

"Plandampf" - the German word describing the use of steam power to pull regular scheduled trains. Not only a single train, but nearly all trains in a selected region and for 2 to 3 days! That´s quite an event, requiring a heck of an organisation and logistics. An effort worthwhile - nothing brings back the good old days of steam better!

Today´s video shows "Plandampf" freight trains in the Werra Valley around Eisenach in Thuringia. At 5.35 min you can see Wartburg Castle - that´s where Martin Luther hid out to escape prosecution. He used the time of his stay there to translate the Holy Book into German.

Enjoy!

Have a great weekend!

Morning All!

Flo coffee for now please.

Worked on my DPM Transfer Building again last evening. I guess I am just used to the Walthers kits as I am finding this DPM kit to be a real challenge. I am confident that it will turn out as I plan it to but its fighting me every step of the way. My modern grain elevator is moving along nicely. I should be at the priming stage by Monday or Tuesday.

Well I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and productive Saturday.

Happy modeling all!

It's a rainy day here.  We haven't had one for a while.  The forecast is cloudy later, so I'll probably take the mountain bike out and perhaps get a bit muddy on the wet trails.  Nothing serious, just the occasional puddle on otherwise flat and safe terrain.

Steaks for dinner.  MOH picked up a couple of nice rib-eyes at BJs yesterday.  I'll do some baked sweet potatoes as sides.  I'll pick up a baguette to make garlic bread, too, and we've already got broccoli in the fridge.

This is an old picture I took (how old?  I used a film camera) looking down the tunnel in the Boston subway system, probably on the Green Line.

Yeah, the curves are crazy.  It's one of the oldest systems in the country.  The tunnels were not designed by wandering cows, but they generally follow the old roads which were designed by wandering cows.  This puts special requirements on the cars whenever replacements go out for bid, which isn't very often.

well, finally! in a 12 hour period, I finally got some 7 hours of sleep! most I've had all week!

Herr Ulrich: do you guys have such things as window air conditioners over there? How much would a small one for your BR window cost you? Maybe we can get you one?

We have a large 12, 500 BTU one in the LR/kit area, and a either 5k or 6k BTU in the master Br. The trailer rooms are aligned thusly {front to back}: Kit, LR, Computer room BR, TRAIN/Junk room BR, Bath{with laundry there} and in the very back the Master BR. SO If we run the LR unit and the Master BR unit on very hot days on high for MBR one, and set at 63-65F on the LR one, they pretty well keep it reasonably cool here. The train room also has an a/c for it, but since i haven't played with the trains lately {gotta find them in there with all the other schtuff in there},it hasn't been put in lately, it is really NOT needed though. The computer room is like 4 degeres higher than the LR, as is the bath, too, over the MB temp..

Right now it is 83 on the porch here, which translates to76 outside, it is a nice cool 65f {what the a/c is set on} in here now in the LR, but as the outside temp rises, so will the temp in here, to about 70f later on at the high temp time of day{forecast to be about 83 degrees arund 4-5pm} .IF we don't set it so cold now, it will have some trouble trying to "keep up" as the outside temp rises.

Well, i will get into some kind of trouble around here, just don't know what.. need to do some THROWING out of schtuff, boht in here, and on teh porch, and from the shed, that is for sure.

My father wants our old HUGE 36" dual stage snow blower, so we have to FIND IT in the shed for him to come get later on today or tomorrow. Tomorrow is spposed to be the hottest day so far,and MOH works the A of M, so it will be the hottest part of day to dig it out of shed. It hasnt been used in at least 15 years, we don't need that monster, and my father and his neighbor sorta share one, which broke last year. SO My father is tickled to get it!

SO, I best get some what do they call it? mojo going and get my derriere in action!

later

This is an old picture I took (how old?  I used a film camera) looking down the tunnel in the Boston subway system, probably on the Green Line.

what/how  is this thing called 'film camera" thing?

{joking}

Memba' the old Polaroid instant photo camera? the SX 70? The sorta digital instant pic camera of its time..my grandmother had one!

It is amazing how much tech has advanced in my 50+ years....

I went looking for a disposable film camera and found the last 2 at CVS, and the only CVS remaining in our area to have a film developing section 2 years ago!

oh well,

When my daughter was in high school, maybe middle school, she took a photography course.  She had to borrow my film camera (a Canon FtB) and get a can of black-and-white film.  They did the whole thing, developing and all.  She really enjoyed it, but hasn't touched a film camera since.

The last camera place I know of around here closed a few years ago.  I wouldn't know where to look for film now.

In a way, it's a shame.  All that nice technology, and the old camera with its multiple lenses are all in perfect working order, still dust-free in their original foam-lined cases.  But, they're dinosaurs.  My little digital camera takes better photos and movies, too.

Good morning, everyone !

Mr. B .... Thar subway track does look a bit croked for sure.

I've been on the London Undergound (subway), and the cars are very small compared with those in North America.

Afternoon, Folks!

After a rather damp start this morning, a fresh breeze turned the day into a nice one. Not too hot, just comfy. Most of Germany is again suffering from a heat wave, it´s only us up north enjoying pleasant temperatures.

Herr Ulrich: do you guys have such things as window air conditioners over there? How much would a small one for your BR window cost you? Maybe we can get you one?

Galaxy - or windows aren´t made for those. We´d have to get a wall mounted one, but then you´d have a problem of getting rid of the water. For those few days we have hot weather it isn´t really worth the trouble (and the cost).

My TV table is done and I hope to have my new TV going shortly. Howmus mentioned he still has VCR tapes, I get scoffed at somewhat when I mention I have VCR to my friends. I'm wondering how many of you still have VCR tapes even if you hardly use them?

Oh, we've got them.  The player is upstairs in the wife's bedroom.  (She snores.)  She has a bunch of exercise and yoga tapes she still watches occasionally.

Our daughter is 24 and we still have stuff like Winnie the Pooh tapes in closets somewhere.  Junk collects to fill all available space.

I still have HUNDREDS of vhs tapes going back to 1982, most of which recorded "priceless treasures" so we could watch them later.  At some point in time, I guess I'll have to get at thinning them out, when I run out of storage space...ooops, that time is here!
