In this forum I wanted to have a place where if you could send a letter to the editor of MR and it would be read and printed what would you write and say or ask for. I will go first.

Dear Mr Editor,

This year I started getting your Issues fot Model Railroader and I feel it is a great publication. I really like the Articles and layout drawings and the how-to sections are informative. I look forward to picking up a new issue as I usually have worn out the old one from reading it over and over. I would like to suggest a few things for you to consider for the future. More article on other gauges so I may see what others are doing outside of my interset in HO. I may find other gauges that interset me more. I would like to see more photos of the persons layout that is getting featured each month. There is so much good work done on these layouts please show it off. How about a newbie section for those of us that are new and those who are newer then me to the hobby? Give us the basics to start the hobby right rather then letting us jump in feet first and sink when we get in over ou heads.Less advertisments and more articles and pictures, I know you have to sell advertising space to make money to cover cost but try to cut some over head somewhere and give us more. these are only suggestions but please give them some tought.

sincerly one little voice.

Hi Terry!
I was wondering when MR is going to have more photos on the layouts you feature? I mean 3-4 doesn't cut it..How about these layouts articles having more how its ran and equipment used instead of how I make my scenery or how I made my layout out of lumber?
How about some more Railroads you can model articles featuring short lines(ok,I admit I am bias here[:D])?
How about brining back 'Paint Shop"?
Thanks for your time reading this.
A wondering
Brakie.

Dear Editor,

I think Model Railroader is pretty terrific just the way it is. I even find the advertising interesting and informative, though I wi***here were more ads for N scale equipment (I know... they advertise where the majority of the market is).

My only complaint is this... Many times I will be reading an article and the text goes in to great detail describing a certain portion of the layout. I go to look for the picture of this section, and there is none to be found. No fair!! I realize that you cannot publish photos of all sections of some of the massive layouts you cover. But it sure would be nice if you could at least publish photos of the areas detailed in the text.

Thanks,
Jerry

Model RailroadING is a completely different magazine from Model RailroadER. Kalmbach Publishing does Model RailroadER, and maintain this forum.

roadtrp- I totally I agree with you complaint. Not being able to see what they major part of the article detracts from the article. Over all I'm really pleased with the mag though I do agree with all the points written above.

I picked up a handful of MR's from '88, and the actual thickness of the magazines was the first difference I noticed. Is it just me or am I getting only half the mag that existed back then? I'd love to see the 'trains of thought' section revived too.

Other than that, it's a great magazine.

Lots of magazines are much thinner today than they were 10 years ago (get some old and new copies of a computer mag like PC Magazine and you'll see what I meant). I compared a recent issue to one from the early 90's, and noticed that there are a lot less big, multi-page ads now, which probably accounts for some of the loss of bulk. Guess most of those folks have moved to or been replaced by web sites.

On the other hand, the cost of a subscription hasn't really changed between then and now, which kind-of surprised me.

The text/articles are proportional to the amount of advertising. So, as advertising in MR has steadily decreased from its peak about 1994-5, so has the text (peak # of pages in MR around 225 in Jan. 1995; around 165 for same month by 2003). Thus, it is very unlikely that you will see an increase in the modeling content in MR in the short term. In fact, I'd expect MR's January issue (typically larger than the average month anyway) page count to drop below the 150 mark fairly soon, with average page count for mid-year issues below 120 pages.

Dear Terry,
You've got a great magazine, that's for sure. But I think you guys could cut down on all the pages of just advertisements. As said earliar, you guys could also bring back paintshop, and have more layouts featured with more pictures. I think a good way to find out what readers want would be to take surveys right here on the forum. If you did all this, MR would be the best magazine ever [not that it's not already[;)]]

Only 9 replies I would have thought that this would have gotten a better respone from the masses.

I really wonder if Terry has read this post or not i sure hope so I know he post here sometimes.

Model railroader is a very good magazine in my humble opinion. I just want to get more from it that all the advertisements that are there. Alas this only my wish list as I stated in the heading.

4884Bigboy I really agree they should do a poll here it could help them and us,
I dont want to reinvent the wheel just make it more round. Sometimes I think I get more content by reading the post here but thats probly the idea of the forums.

Dear Terry

Common theme here: more pics of each layout. Sometimes the photos are all clustered around one section of the track plan. So what if it isn't finished? It's just as interesting. Yes I know MR has an approach of only showing the finished layout so as not to destroy the illusion, but I for one don't agree with that. I'd love to see a few "how it's done" shots and also an overall view of the room, what the overall impression is.

Still the best MRR mag there is. Id' love to see it even better.

Brakie.

Check out Howard Zane's layout in the Feb 04 issue. A whopping 10 photos!

The problem is usually the amount of quality material available. We had our club shot back in February. Of the 60+ photos taken (by a professional who regularly appears in MR), only one was usable (according to MR). So the photographer came back in April for a re-shoot. Only six made the final cut.....
