Good morning. It's 42° with 100% humidity. The high will be 72°.Today I have some freight cars to put away, about eight of them. I may leave a couple on the layout for a while. There's still computer related stuff to clear away, screws, wires, small circuit boards, etc. Maybe later I'll be able to run a train or two. I may have to get my left thumb checked out. I popped it out of joint somehow last night. I popped it back in this morning after discovering it. It seems all right, no swelling or anything. Time will tell. If it gives me a problem I'll have the doc look at it.

Waiting for the new dryer to be delivered...good thing they didn't come early, though we thought it had a 3 prong plug, turns out it has a 4 pronger. SO I have a message into the store and will try again at 10 am when they open to correct them, hopefully BEFORE it goes on the truck!
Still thinking on the Chrysler T&C minivan. I have had 4 caravans from 83, to 87, to 91 on to the 98 we still have, and each had its problems, of course, any car will, and some are magnificent and little or no trouble. MOH had an oldsmobilenad a Taurus that had problems too. SO basing a decision on that is hardly relevant. Many of you will remember. when I go the KIA 3 years ago, I had LOTS of problems with IT. I have only put 6 K miles on it in 3 years {has 63,850 on it now} and so was NOT happy with it! I also had a chevy full size 4 x4 pickup that the starter went on it like clockwork every 6 months, and so was always replaced under a warranty for it, and the 4 wheel drive system was an expensive fix {i only used it in snow and no plowing or offroading}. SO...
IF the T&C said "take me home" it would be in the driveway now. BUT, it makes it harder to figure out.
Oh and for whomever said their Hyundai Santa Fe was a trouble free vehicle...we have a freind who just traded in his "junk" Santa Fe with 2000K on it that did nothing but plague them with repairs for 7 years!
So you can just never tell about a vehicle.
Decisions decisions....would be easier if the decision was between candy or cake! The answer? Neither.

the dryer is here.
Now to test it out. I have a 7 cf washer {not that full but close} and so with the dryer at 6.5 CF it should all really fit and dry in say, the 90 minute timed cycle. We shall see.
I have about 7 loads backed up so I shall be busy. Plus bedding plus its time to wash winter/spring coats again. The dryer will get a workout!!!

Was about ready to open the diner door this morning when I got an emergency email from the MLK Committee president. A very highly thought of Black Minister here in Geneva passed away very suddenly a few days ago at the age of 79. Turns out there will be two services for him. The first will be at his church tonight, and then a second one will be at my church, the Presbyterian Church on Saturday morning. The committee wanted to send flowers for both services, and guess who is retired and has lots of time to get those type of things done on a moments notice? So I drove downtown and got the flowers ordered and then had to call the funeral home to see if they can transport the flowers from one church to the other and if they can be displayed in both places. They may not be able to use them at one of the services due to family wishes.... I hope to make the service tomorrow for at least a short time as I have to be at the museum in the early afternoon for a training session.
Barry, thanks for the nice weather again today! I think I'll go down cellar and watch the meter spin for a while... Actually I have to finish the laundry. 8 string Bass??? Gotta think about that. I have seen 5 string Basses. 8 string Bass? I have played a 12 string guitar, but never heard of an 8 string guitar. Don't have enough fingers to get around that one...

I have also been answering emails about the sound system out at camp. The guy from the Rotary Club wants me to order the new speakers, but I have no "Proper Authority" (railroad rule) to do that until I am told to do so by the camp ranger or someone else with "Proper Authority"...

My daughter had the same KIA as you have and it was the biggest piece of excrement ever produced. It spent more time at the dealer than on the road. The dealer wiggled around about honoring the warranty every time she had to take it in. She finally just gave up when the front end differential went out of it and donated it to the Liver Foundation.
No wonder you want to get rid of you Kia.

VERY good to hear that you made it through all your procedures, Ulrich! Probably just as well that you didn't recall all of them, too (Sent you a PM as well). Hope that Petra's life has calmed down too now. I'm sure she was on the 'edge of her seat' for about all of that time. Give her a hug from all of us when you get back home from the heart clinic, and do follow the doctors' recommendations for healing up and other follow-up stuff.
Jeffrey, it was good that your Dad helped you out with replacing your 'toasted' 'puter. As you said, it probably had lived way beyond what any of us would expect. Glad to hear you have been able to find some of the "ins" and "outs" of Win8, and you may find other ways to fine-tune the new setup to how you want it to run for you. Silly computer companies keep trying to tell us how we 'ought' to use them. Harrummmph!!
Garry, I think at that restaurant you showed, it gives new meaning to "street running" when one of those 'big boys' (non-steamers) rumbles by ya! Might have to hang onto your cup or glass and plate, so it doesn't skip across your table top.
Looks like our NOTB Diners are about in short sleeve and walking shorts weather up there, eh? Well, maybe next week... Down here in Cape G.-land, we had a smidgen of frost on the car window, but it had melted before I got out to drive to w**k today, and it's supposed to reach mid-60's (F, around 18 C) by this afternoon. Almost spring down here (and soon will be pollen season...).

But as I said, the gas and time to bring it here would kill your budget (or anyone else's), I'm sure.... Hey, has YOH heard back on that job interview yet?

Today is the 50 year anniversary of the loss of USS Thresher (SSN-593) with all hands during sea trials.
Had a nice lunch with my parents today. After coming home I ran trains for awhile before the animals decided that it was more important to feed them.
Galaxy- Hope the dental work goes well. I am a frequent flyer with the dentist. I was genetically blessed with poor teeth.

Got most of the excess freight cars put away. I left two 50' boxcars on a dead end spur. In other news the ignition relay on my van gave up the ghost this morning. It will no longer trip the starters relay. So I disconnected my starter button wire from the ignition relay and spliced it onto the trip wire for the starters relay. Works like a charm! Press the starter button and power goes from the battery to the starter relay via the starter button. It'll suffice until I get another ignition relay. I went to my fathers place to see if there was a ps2 keyboard connector to USB connector there. Nada! The only one I could find was a USB to ps2 keyboard port. Just the opposite.Be back later.

Vince, IIRC the piece was .040 thick evergreen styrene. I just added it because thats as far down as the Atlas cab would go on the proto hood!

Friday evening and it's been blah, cloudy, cold, damp windy all day. Suppose to sn*w off and on for the next 2 or three days/nights. Hang on to your sn*wshovel Johnboy. It's heading your way in Regina as well according to the weather guessers.
MOH and I seem to have chased down a case of the creeping crud somewhere along the line so it's been kinda sorta quiet around here except for the sneezing blowing and toilet flushing. Sort of goes along with the weather I suppose.
The last couple of days I have managed to make a bunch of rock castings. I've got 5 different molds from WS so I've now got quite a pile of rocks. It goes pretty quick when you remember to make a new set every 1/2 hour or so. Anyway I now have a fair supply for when I need them.
I messed around with some cardboard weaving for scenery back a few days ago and I'm not all that impressed. The hot glue doesn't hold the strips to the painted scenery decider worth a hoot so I don't know. Maybe I'll just go back to my old screen method, at least it's familiar and works for me.
I discovered a new use for leftover plastic chloroplast. I'm using it to line my tunnels after it's been painted black. Lion tells me he uses cardboard for his and that got me to thinking about the plastic stuff so there ya go. Gets more junk out of my shop too.
Jeffrey seems to be kinda busy what with tearing apart old puters and bypassing ignition switches on his van. Hasn't been round much today.
Sure glad I don't run Burlington Northern. Those dern things seem to be really addictive at least to Gary who seems to want to buy every last one of them
Oh right, it's April so that means SUPERTRAIN is on in Calgary It's one of the largest if not the largest Model RR show in Canada. Takes two days to go through and about 1 hr to spend waaaaayyyy toooo much money. Maybe I'll pass this year..... naw couldn't do that. It would make too much sense.

OzJim - that sounds great to have a 'local' LHS in your area. I have loved the LHS'es I've visited, including one in St. Louis area - Irish something (which closed a bit back), and there was a nice-sized one in the Memphis area I went to when I was visiting there. It's nice to have a decent number of selections to pick from (and some of the best ones have a bargain bin (good for finding scratchbuilding stuff or scrapyard items...). Ah, a few memories of LHS'es...

Jeffrey - your talk about the computers (new, old and the reclamation stuff) reminded me. I had picked up a Mac Mini about a month ago, and had upgraded the internal drive and RAM on it. Unfortunately, in the take-apart and putting it back together, there was one chip (had four straight-line legs that connected it to) on the front of a small sub-board. The legs broke off when I was taking things apart. Turned out that chip/board was part of an infrared for the remote control. The Mini functioned fine without the chip on that board - just not the infrared remote. So today I got in the replacement board I had found (and waited for it to come back in stock...) and ordered once it came in. Didn't cost very much, so tomorrow I'll swap the sub-boards and put the complete one in.

Tomorrow afternoon is oldest grandson's 5th birthday party (starting with an hour on the bouncy things before the refreshments). Probably a wise choice on my daughter & son-in-law's part, I'd say. Talked with my daughter on the phone this week, and she said grandson's not as much into dinosaurs - it's ninja turtles now (I understand they're coming back into style...). Couldn't find a ninja turtle 5th birhday card, though. - Todd, do you have a card like that, that you could get to me by morning?

Work Front, seems I was paranoid for nothing, but still does not mean they are not out to get me. It was slow today, that is till I was alone again! Just like clock work at 6:00 PM I got slammed with STUPID STUFF that did not pay diddle. Made a whole extra $11.06 today.
B&O SD 7, the one I got for free. Just re oiled the motor and giving it more track time, but I don't think it is going to quite down.I can hear it making a wining sound when it is 20 feet away. Only run time will tell. Maybe I should try oiling the U Joints?

Hope springs eternal, or so they say. It was such a beautiful day here that I'm hoping that cold weather is finally departing the area for parts unknown. I took advantage and got most of the flower beds cleaned up, the leaves along the garage and the fence raked up, and some trash that acculated under the Rose of Sharon cleaned up. I also found out that I'm out of shape and getting old. Had to come and take a nap after all that.
I had the lawn mower tuned up last week and bought a new blade for too. So I'm ready for that chore when the time comes. Which won't be too long from now from what I saw today. I also noted that the dafodills have a lot of buds on them. Tomorrow I'll see if the roto tiller will start after sitting since last spring. I usually make it a habit to run all my small engines once a month, but somehow forgot about the roto tiller. Maybe I shouldn't have staked so much junk all around it.
Should be a quiet weekend here. Nothing scheduled as far as I know. Well, railfanning on Sunday, but that's a given. Even the wife looks forward to that. Makes it easy for me.
Today I was thinking about my friend and neighbor who passed away a short time ago. We usually sat on his front porch after dinner for a couple of hours when the weather permitted. I'm going to miss that. He really was the last good friend I had. All the others have passed on now. Boy, do I miss them. But, that's life and I've had a really good one considering everything, so I've got nothing to complain about.

Good Morning!
Back again! The test went quite well, although there is a little infection which requires attention. The antibiotics I am on will take care of that (and, hopefully, my everlasting sinusitis as well).
Spring still has not found its way to northern Germany. The wind is still blowing icy cold air from the Arctic region, making it very unpleasant to stay any length of time outside - shiver!!!
When Petra went to pick me up at the hospital yesterday afternoon, our car finally drew its terminal breath. It is beyond any repair for economic reasons, the motor control unit finally gave up and a replacement will cost something like $ 2,000, as used parts are not around anymore, due to the government financed wrecking action we had a few years back. Petra had to use my parents´ car to drive to the hospital, but she really hates that one, as it has a semi-automated transmission. Each time that box shifts gears, the car rocks like a mule. The car is up for technical inspection this month, requiring a set of new tires, brake disc and brake pads to pass. That´s also to the tune of $ 2,000! Talked to my Dad about this, and he agreed to sell it and will "sponsor" a new car for Petra and me! Apparently my Mom was not in the room while we were on the phone! He told me it is just a little thank you for all what I have done for them - isn´t that sweet of him? He has always been a generous man - when my Mom was not around!
Now we have to find a suitable set of wheels for us, which is not an easy task. Cars cost a fortune over here and I don´t want to drain my father´s pocket book too much. Petra and I do not do a lot of driving these days, so a small car will do. It´ll have to be cheap in price, tax and insurance, but high in quality. It also needs to be roomy enough to accommodate my 6´5" comfortably, without straining my back. Anything below 50 mpg is out of question in any case, given the ever rising cost of gas here.
I will take a look at a Volkswagen up!, a car which is most likely not marketed in the US. It is the cheapest VW on the market, more of a shopping chart than a real car, but should it seat me, that´s all we need. Tax and insurance amount to about $ 150 a year, which is less than half of what I have to pay now. According to the paper specs, it gets about 60mpg without being a hybrid car.
We will go for the 4-door version, though, as it will be easier to load the groceries onto the back seats.

I just got the news that my dad was taken into the hospital this morning for treatment of a case of pneumonia. I am very much worried that this could mean his end, as old folks usually don´t go well through this.
