Pop Up Ads

I see the pop ups are back again after their Xmas & New Year break. I thought the instance of them popping up all the time was fixed.

Use a pop up blocker....no more pop ups

Windows XP Service Pack 2 does a good job of blocking them on Internet Explorer. Now I only see them on my stone-age Win 2000 computer at work.

What Pop-Up ads?
I use both Netscape 7.0 and the new Firefox browser and I don't see any. You must be using Bill Gates wonderful IE.

Yep firefox mozilla renders all pop-ups null and void. With Adblock even images and adverts can be blocked. Install it now it's free!

Thanks guy's. I have now installed a blocker, and that has fixed the problem up.

I have Mozilla Firefox and I have not seen a pop up for a long time.

I am also backed by Giant Anti-Spyware, Norton Firewall (And antivirus) as well as other software designed to ram the ads and anything else off of my computer. My ISP (Yahoo) also prevents pop ups from coming into my "territory"

I also configure my computer to refuse active x controls while this reduces the "flashy pretty thingies that make websites spin" I can still do alot of my internet related stuff without too much trouble.

The only pop up that I have running on my computer is the Ebay tool bar which alerts me within minutes of a bid or sale closure.

This can be a blessing and a curse. I have some content-rich websites whose sole means of support is the little revenue that is derived from the ads. While it may be a blessing to some visitors to see gaping holes in the page instead of relevant ads, it means that eventually I'll shut down the sites or have to charge for viewing.

My little book review site gets a half-million visitors per year and the bandwidth has to be paid for somehow. Imagine how long your local newspaper would last if suddenly all the ads disappeared from their pages.

I have no problem with ads on pages although they are sometimes overdone. The bills DO have to be paid.

However, I do reject pop ups and new browser windows for advertising purposes.

My response to Pop Up Ads is the same as my response to telemarketers -- NONE. I refuse to buy something advertised in either way even if it's a product I happen to be looking for at the time. Advertising -- and forms of advertising -- that produce no sales will eventually disappear

The reason I originally brought this subject up, was due to enquires about it late last year. It appears that the pop ups would only appear once when you first logged onto the site. However, this was not the case, and they kept on coming. It was advised that Eric Lundstrom of MR was going to look into the matter, and I thought he had, because they vanished altogether.

Anyway, it's a moot point now, as the blocker I am using does a fine job.
